Obituary:
Hon. Thomas F. Miller, senior judge of the police court, died about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home in Takoma Park. Judge Miller had been ill for several months, and it has been regarded by his physicians for some time that death from his affliction was only a question of time. yet nevertheless the end came rather sudden and unexpectedly.
At 2 oclock yesterday afternoon he went out to take a walk in the sunshine with his little daughter, thinking it might make him feel better. He called at the post office and secured his mail, and a short time later returned home, and at 3:30 o'clock he was dead. Shortly after entering the house he was seized with a coughing fit which, together with other causes from which he was a long sufferer, created the eruption of an artery in his neck, and hemorrhage resulted.... Judge Miller was fifty-one years of age and was born in Charlestown, Jefferson County, W. Va.
His attending physician was immediately summoned, but before his arrival Judge Miller was dead. His immediate family and a few neighbors were the only ones present at the time... In 1884 Judge Miller married Miss Annie Wade, daughter of Col. Wade, formerly United States marshal of Georgia and a well-known politician. She is a near relative of Hon. Clark Howell, of the Atlanta Constitution.
He is survived by three small children, the eldest a girl of ten years... Complete arrangements have not yet been made for the funeral, but the following have been selected as pallbearers: Maurice Smith, Alex R. Mullowny, James L. Pugh, jr.; J. J. Darlington, Myer Lewin and P. F. Leighton.

This is my brother Donnie's (who is in Chile and hasn't seen him personally yet) first grandchild. My sister-in-law Debra flew back right after Christmas so she would be here when the baby arrived. He was due New Year's Day, but finally made his appearance 2 weeks later by C-section. All are doing fine. This is my first grandnephew, or is it greatnephew. I always get that
confused." (Teresa Lee Daniels Griffis)

'The Capitol of All this Country' Royal Oaks, one of the oldest manor houses in Centreville, lies in pieces waiting to be rebuilt.
By Cheryl Repetti/Centre View
September 2, 2005
THERE ARE CONFLICTING stories about who actually built Royal Oaks. According to the great grandchildren of Revolutionary War patriot and statesman Gen. Daniel ROBERDEAU, the General built Royal Oaks for his son James in 1785. Others have said it was an estate of the LANE and TRIPLETT families. Cornelia Peake McDonald wrote in her Civil War-era diary that, "the home once occupied by Col. Simon TRIPLETT - which descended to his son James Lane TRIPLETT, and from him to the ROBERDEAU family, has always been called Royal Oaks. Tradition claims that when one of these oaks dies a member of the TRIPLETT family dies, and coincidence has often corroborated the saying."
Norman Baker's extensive review of land records tells another story, however. Baker concluded that Newton Keene built the house for his family sometime between 1765 and 1770. If this date is correct, then Royal Oaks was built around the same time as Mount Gilead and is the one other structure to survive from the days when Centreville was Newgate. Or it would be, if it could be restored.

GEN. ROBERDEAU may not have built Royal Oaks, but James ROBERDEAU and his family did reside there. The Roberdeau's story illustrates the important ties Centreville then had to Alexandria and points west. It is also a poignant account of family life in the early 19th century.
James ROBERDEAU was born in Alexandria and grew up in Winchester. In 1818 he married Mildred Lancaster DENNY and thus came to own Royal Oaks (Mildred had inherited the estate from her father). Like many large farms in Truro Parish, Royal Oaks used slave labor during this period. The 1820 census indicates that there were seven slaves and one free 'colored' man included in the Royal Oaks household.
James and Mildred had three children in as many years but only one child survived to adulthood. Mildred died in 1821. Sometime before then she had written to Dr. Stabler, a well known apothecary in Alexandria (the shop is now a museum in Old Town), that she was "afflicted - with a paralytick [sic] stroke" and wished to undergo the latest in medical treatments, electrical shock. Mildred was laid to rest in the northwest corner behind the Royal Oaks house.
James then married Martha Lane TRIPLETT in 1822. Together they had seven children, four of whom survived. James died in 1832 at the age of 47. He was buried beside Mildred on the Royal Oaks grounds. Martha lived a long life and was buried at the Fairfax Court House.
Of the five surviving Roberdeau children, only two remained in Centreville. The eldest daughter, Jane, married Walter POWELL. They bought Royal Oaks shortly after they were married in 1841 and sold the property to the Whaley family in 1845."

General Notes: Husband - Cpl. Bright Damascus POSEY

Bright Damascus "B. D." POSEY, the third son of Henry W. POSEY and Louiza Constanza DANIELL, was born in 1853 in Georgia, probably Baldwin County. Louisa married Henry W. in 1847. His older brothers, Fernanda (Fernando) and Henry A. are named in the 1850 census of Baldwin County, Georgia. Their father died before 13 Jan 1857.

"Georgia, Baldwin County: John F. CALLAWAY makes application for letters of guardianship... of Phinander[*] and Phinasus[*] POSEY, minors of H. W. POSEY... John Hammond, Ordinary." (Tuesday, December 27, 1859) [Milledgeville Georgia Newspaper Clippings (Southern Recorder), Volume X, 1857-1861, Tad Evans, p. 238]
[*Names should be Fernando and Damascus POSEY, sons of Henry W. POSEY and Louisa Constanza DANIELL. Louisa married second John Francis Marrion CALLAWAY, between 1858 and 1861.]

Neither Louisa, or her children have been found in the 1860 census.

In 1870 Baldwin County, Damascus POSEY, 16, is in the home of Leonidas and Emily K. CALLAWAY. Leonidas is a younger brother of John Francis Marion CALLAWAY. His brother Henry A. lives with Louisa's brother, Arthur R. DANIELL (her neighbor in the 1850 census). Fernando has married. By 1880, Louisa and John Francis Marion CALLAWAY have six children.

WEST, HUGH
b. [blank]; d. 1767; m. Elizabeth MINOR; Burgess, Fairfax County, 1754-1755; Burgess, Frederick County, 1756-1758.

Hugh WEST, Jr. died in April 1767. His Will was presented to court, proved, and admitted to record in June 1767.

General Notes: Child - Sarah WEST

Sarah "Sally"WEST married Henry GUNNELL on August 10, 1786. Henry was a wealthy man who provided Sally with a luxurious mansion in which to raise their seven children.

"Henry Jun. Gunnel" is listed in the 1774 Rent Rolls of fairfax County, Virginia

In his Will, Major Henry provided in great detail for his children. This last measure was not appreciated by his wife as she renounced his Will and in her own Will left to her sons "fifty cents and no more, the reasons of which is that they were left rich by their father, the late Major Henry GUNNELL."

After Henry's death in 1822, Sally moved to Clarke County, Virginia to live out her life in the care of her daughter Mary Ann HOOE. Sally died January 17, 1837 and was buried in Clarke County.

In conflict with the burial in Hooe Cemetery, Clark County, Virginia, is Find A Grave Memorial# 20015294, created by: Audrey on Jun 21, 2007, which shows a picture of Mrs. Sarah GUNNELL's headstone in Fairfax City Cemetery, Fairfax, Fairfax City, Virginia, transcribed as:
"IN / Memory of / MRS. SARAH / Consort of / Mr. Major Henry Gunnell / who departed this / life Jan. 17, 1847 Aged / 72 years." The picture of the gravestone is unclear as to the date of death. 1850

General Notes: Husband - Alvurn MITCHELL

Alvurn MITCHELL, named in the History of Hancock County, Georgia, is not with his family in 1850 Barbour County, Alabama and is presumed to have died young.

Another possibility offered by Tuck Wilson:
"I carry Abraham Hill Mitchell and a William Mitchell on my list of children as possibles because I have seen them listed so in "Mitchell Descendants" [http://jrshelby/genmap/mitchell.htm] but they are not documented.
Jourdan Mitchell is presumably dead by 1850 as Julia is head of household, age 35 with the four children, Abraham 16, Martha 14, Sarah 12, Jourdan 10. No evidence that thay had a child named Alvurn and I think Elizabeth Wiley Smith (or Fammie Mitchell who probably did the work) made a mistake. I think "Alvurn" is Abraham Hill Mitchell and he married Lizzie Persons.
There is a grave in the William Mitchell (grandfather) plot, Pinehill Cemetery, Auburn, Alabama :
Abram Mitchell - born in Walton County 4 Apr 1837, died 20 Jul 1889. I don't know if this is the same guy but I think it is because tombstone states he was born in Walton County and his parents wed in Walton County, and his grandparents owned the plots." Tuck
Compioler's note: I wonder about the possibility that handwritten "Abram" may have been interpreted as "Alvern" in the History of Hancock County? RLD.

Palmetto Groves, Jones County October 1 1826
Esteemed Cousin
It has become my painful duty to inform you of the Death of my beloved Sister Caroline.
Her voice is forever hushed and her eyes, closed in Death. Though she has departed from our sight, she shall never, no never be forgot, she has bid
Farewell to pain and sorrow
Farewell to sin and strife
In happiness and glory
She will spend and (sic) endless life.
Sister Caroline was taken sick the day the day you left here and died the 15th. Oh, that parting hour who can imagine the agony but we that ___ (ope?) our lovely and amiable Sisters
extended on their _____ beds see their eyes robed (sic) of it's luster and Death in all his terror _____ over there (sic) mortal remains. when her cheek on which had lately sat the bloom and fascination of youth, was steadily fixed apparently on the beauteous spheres of fair and more
delight full worlds whether her calm and gentle spirit seemed mediating its flight. She spoke a language worthy of her which the frozen toning of ink never learned to speak or mimic. 2 days before her death she got happy, there were some religious persons in the room she asked them to sing and pray for her but the Doctors would not allow them. She then shouted Hallalujah to the Lamb and sung
Come ye sinners, poor and needy.
She then prayed the most affecting prayer I ever heard in all my life, she said she wished to talk to us all and she did so, she talked very calm and deliberately she said she was going to die and leave us all, if it was God's wish that she should live she would be willing, as it was not she was willing said she did not know as she should ever be better prepared than she was. She asked for 3 glasses of water repeatedly this they refused she said she did not want the water so bad she only wanted it for the sake of the Father Son and Holy Ghost the Doctors even refused her this, she then said she would soon in Abraham's bosom where she should drink the fairest and best water
She then asked us all for 3 _____ apiece and told us she would die at 10 o'clock and sure enough the lovely and amiable Carolines voice was forever hushed her last words were be-lie-ve. She requested to me to write to all her friends and tell them she was gone to heaven and they must prepare to meet her there.
Cousin Emera It is very sickly in Jones County at this time Uncle Julius has had a very sever (sic) attack of the Billious fever we thought he would die but he is up and about but his little son is very sick. Uncle Cad has two children likely to die Harriotte and Augustus, Cousin Mary Mitchell is very sick. Cousin Mary Moughon is very sick and has lost a son. Mother keeps in good health but my health and Papa's has been very bad. Excuse bad writing and write soon. You must call by as you go on to Alabama. Present my love and complements to Mr. Thrasher and except (sic) the greatest share for yourself.
Ellen E. Mitchell
Mrs Emera A. E. Thrasher

Addendum DLW:
"Uncle Julius" - Julius C. B. Mitchell, the youngest of the clan, married to Catherine Daniell Mitchell. They only had one son of record, Americus Columbus Mitchell, b. 18 Nov 1819.
"Uncle Cad" - Augustus Cadwell Mitchell, also seen as Augustus George Cadwell Mitchell, known as Cadwell, one of the older Mitchell children. He married Elizabeth W. Hill (1797-1852). This letter is the first reference to his child, Augustus, whose full name may be Augustus John.
Cousin Mary Mitchell
Mary Mitchell, dau of William Mitchell & Martha Hill b. after 1808 marries JJ Slatter 1827 in Jones county - likely
Cousin Mary Moughon - Mary Sanford b. abt 1792, d. bef 1850, father was Jesse Sanford, mother was Martha Goodwin Mitchell. She married Thomas Moughon, b. 1787 in N. C. , died 1851 Jones County Georgia. Thomas and Mary were in Baldwin county in 1820, Jones in 1830 and 1850 (1840 not found.). Mary dies before 1850.
"Mother" - Elizabeth Wood, (1788 - aft.1850)
"Papa" - John Mitchell ( abt 1785 - 1841)
Ellen A. E. Mitchell - the author, Ellen Emeline Mitchell, b. abt 1812, d. 1837. She writes an amazing letter for someone about 14 years of age. She goes on to marry a William Moughon in Jones County 6 Feb 1828 and William dies in Jones County in 1830. I don't have the relationship of William to Thomas Moughon who marries Mary Sanford but there should be one.
Mrs. Emera E. Thrasher - the recipient, daughter of Dr. Thomas Mitchell and Mary "Polly" Wood

General Notes: Wife - Henrietta MITCHELL

Notes below from David Leon "Tuck" Wilson:
"Henry Poole wrote 'Henrietta MITCHELL was born. She died. Henrietta, Caroline, and Julia had been away to school in Salem, North Carolina. Returning home in a carriage, they caught a fever and all of them died.' This is not borne out by the 1826 Ellen Mitchell letter describing sister Caroline's death.
Henrietta could be the Henrietta J Mitchell that married Joseph Burch Harris County 1843. My candidate for Joseph would be Joseph W, s/o John Burch & Eliz Wright, married Eliza Ann Temple (earlier?). This is all very tentative in my database, without solid sources.
I have not found anything further on these two people.
[Possible marriage record] "Henrietta J. Mitchell, born Abt. 1817. She married Joseph Burch 15 May 1843 in Harris County, Georgia (Source: (1) Marriage Index : Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina 1641-1944, Mitchell, Henrietta J. to Joseph Burch 15 May 1843., (2) Gagenweb, Joseph Burch Henrietta J. Mitchell 15 May 1843.).
Notes for Henrietta J. Mitchell:
My candidate for Joseph would be Joseph W, s/o John Burch & Eliz Wright, married Eliza Ann Temple (earlier?). This is all very tentative in my database, without solid sources."
