General Notes: Husband - Daniel THOMAS

"Daniel THOMAS- (proven by will) Daniel was born April 7, 1783 in what is now Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to Kentucky at a young age and lived in Fayette County, not far from Henry THOMAS', "Thomas Station". He married Mary McQUEEN (born 8 Dec 1785, died 2 February, 1858) of nearby Madison County, Kentucky on 2 December, 1804 and lived for several years in Lewis County, Kentucky. The book "Portrait and Biographic Record of Madison and Hamilton Counties Indiana" by the Chicago Biographical Publishing Company, 1893 provides a short biography on Daniel Thomas and states he was a 'soldier in the War of 1812".

Daniel and family moved to Rush County, Indiana in the year 1834, following his son George's lead. George bought land in Rush County in 1829 and moved the rest of the family there October 22, 1832. Daniel and Mary had nine known children including six girls and three boys. His children were George, born November 1805, Evey, William, Eliza, Sarah "Sally", Daniel Edwin Rufus. (D.E.R.) Thomas, born 20 February 1828, Uriah, Mary, and Nancy Thomas. There is good evidence of a son David Thomas, also. No proof on David.

George Thomas, son of Daniel, is mentioned prominently in the early history books of Rush County, Indiana. He married Lydia Walker, also a native of Lewis County, Kentucky. In 1860 and 1861, George represented Rush County in the General Assembly of Indiana, and also took an active roll in the organization of the Fifty Second Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, in the Civil War. He was an Elder in the Christian Church and in the early days his residence was known as "the preacher's home", because it was a stopping place of ministers and circuit riders. George's death occurred October 30, 1863 and Lydia died February 24, 1884.

George Washington Thomas, grandson of Daniel and son of George Thomas, was born in Walker Township, Rush County, Indiana July 15, 1844. He inherited portions of his father's land totaling 193 acres which he turned into an excellent farm with his attentions given to "thoroughbred stock". According to the book "History of Rush County, Indiana", Brant and Fuller, 1888, "his farm now has some of the finest stock in this part of the state". George W. married Emma S. Smith, a native of Fulton, Illinois. Their children were: Clarence, born April 16, 1882, died April 24, 1882 and William W. Thomas born April 19, 1884.

D.E.R. Thomas married Josephine W. Hilligas and had the following children: William W. born 1850, Alonzo B. born 1852, David Austin, born 4 Aug 1854, Laura F., born 7 April 1858, Mary Catherine, born 1861, Clement L. Valley, born 1865, Amanda L., born may 1866, and Allie E., born 1867. Josephine died in the spring of 1889 and D.E.R. Thomas then married Jane May. D.E.R. and Jane had two children, Rufus Clyde, born 7 April 1892 and Velma Edith, born 23 December 1893.

Daniel Thomas died in Rush County, Indiana May 2, 1853.

The will of Daniel Thomas goes as follows:
I, Daniel Thomas of Rush County and State of Indiana do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

General Notes: Husband - Colonel John Hugh MEANS, CSA

"MEANS, John Hugh, governor of South Carolina, born in Fairfield district, South Carolina, 18 August, 1812; died in Manassas, Virginia, 28 August, 1862. His father, Thomas. was a native of Boston, Massachusetts The son was graduated at South Carolina college in 1832, after which he engaged in planting, His advocacy of state sovereignty brought him into notice, and he served in the legislature during the agitation regarding state rights. He was elected governor of South Carolina in 1850 and served one term, the constitution of the state forbidding re-election. During his administration he made many speeches favoring secession, and gave much attention to the state militia. He was president of the convention of 1852 which passed a resolution that affirmed the right of the state to dissolve at once all political connection with her co-states and that she forbear the exercise of this manifest right of self-government from considerations of expediency only. He then retired to private life, but was a delegate to the convention of 1860, affixing his name to the ordinance of secession. He was elected colonel of the 17th South Carolina regiment, and was killed in the second battle of Bull Run, 28 August, 1862."

General Notes: Child - Colonel William Burney MEANS

william Burney Means was born on Buckhead Plantation, Fairfield County, South Carolina. He married Martha Sarah Howell.

William Burney MEANS moved his family from South Carolina to Louisiana some time before 1850 because of the introduction of Johnson grass as told in the quote below.
Gov. John H. MEANS of South Carolina had obtained some "guinea grass" seed from Turkey as early as 1835, which he planted on his plantation, where it became known as Means grass. Gov. MEANS likely was not involved with introducing Johnson grass. His brother, William Burney MEANS, knew and appreciated the species' weedy aspects. Probably because of a major Johnson grass infestation, William Means sold his farm, moved from South Carolina to Louisiana, and encouraged his brother to do likewise. The future governor was tempted, but "the big grass has inspired such a terror that no one will even look at (my place)."

The 1850 slave schedule for DeSoto Parish, Louisiana list Colonel W. B. Means with 80 slaves. ["United States Census (Slave Schedule), 1850 ," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MVZ6-S7B : accessed 20 May 2014), W B Means, De Soto parish, De Soto, Louisiana, United States; citing NARA microfilm publication M432, line number 44, National Archives and Records Administration, Washington D.C.; FHL microfilm 443486.]

William is buried in the Episcopal Church Cemetery, Gloster, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Find A Grave Memorial# 93015501 lists his birth on Nov. 5, 1807 in South Carolina, and his death on Sep. 4, 1857 in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. The memorial links to that for his daughter, Mary Means Marshall (1845 - 1904).
