Obituary: "James H. Adams, died in the Fork of Richland District So. Ca. July 14, 1861, from chronic piles, which had sorely afflicted him for several years. In life he had been a man of mark and note. He had been General of Cavalry, Senator in the General Assembly of South Carolina, and Governor of the State. He was a member from Richland District, in the South Carolina Convention of 1860 (which passed the Ordinance of Secession) and one of the Commissioners from the State, to the Government at Washington to adjust the great question of Southern Rights and Independence. In all these varied and distinguished positions, Gen'l Adams was energetic and faithful, acquitting himself in each, and all, to the satisfaction of his fellow citizens, and for the welfare of his State. His highest political ambition, he however, never attained. It is well known that his strong desire, for the dignified position of a seat in the United States Senate, was not gratified. In his first message as Governor of the State, he strongly advocated the re-opening of the African slave trade, which sentiment, was repudiated by the Legislature and the people of the State. It was disposed of by an adverse report (very strong) from a special committee appointed on that portion of the message. Having received its quietus so decidedly, it was not adverted to in his message of the second year of his gubernatorial term. The sentiment and measure, created an unpleasant savour against him, and altho' there were several vacancies in the United States Senate, after his term of office as Governor, and his friends introduced his name; yet in no one instance, and success at all prominent. He was at last defeated by the friends of Gov'r Hammond, who was elected (altho' not a candidate) to the distinguished position, over all opposition, and thus was closed all hope of Gen'l Adams for this distinction. Of the closing period in the life of Gen'l Adams, the writer does not know any particulars. It is however pretty well known, that he became a member of the Episcopal Church in his neighborhood, and no doubt was prominent there, as well as in his political life; however, be this information correct, or not, our fellow citizen has departed, put off this mortal coil, passed the rubicon of time, descended to the grave, the common lot of all, whether rich, or poor, distinguished, or not distinguished, bondman, or freeman, pious or impious, ambitions or unambitious. Thus all, all alike become food for worms; are equally undistinguished, and in process of time, form together (how much so ever they may be have apart in life) component strata of the same mother Earth. General Notes: Husband - Joel ADAMS, Sr., RS-SC

Joel ADAMS arrived in Craven County not long before 1770. He was born in Culpepper County, Virginia on February 4, 1750, the son of James and Agnes ADAMS. On December 28, 1773, Joel married Grace WESTON, the daughter of William and Sarah WESTON.
Joel ADAMS served as a soldier at the Congarees and at Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1781. He also served as assistant comissary for James TAYLOR in 1782. An old tradition says that Joel had to hide in the swanp, barely escaping capture by the British who had camped near Duffie's Mill Pond. While hiding in the swamp, a slave named Quash supplied him with food. For this, Quash was given his freedom and was cared for by the master's family in his old age.

Joel's Revolutionary War service from records in the office of the secretary of the historical commission show service from 1781 though April 15, 1782. He was a horseman at the Congrees with Lt. Hicks CHAPPELL, Capt, GOODWYN's company, Col. TAYLOR's regiment for 35 days, then 62 days as a footman with Lt. William WESTON, same company and regiment. In May 1782 he served 31 days as assistant commissary to James TAYLOR, Capt. GOODWYN's company, Col. TAYLOR's regiment, then again in July as the same, and later supplied two beeves for the brigade of South Carolina State troops for a rendezvous at New Market on April 15, 1782.

Grace WESTON was born on September 27, 1752 and died on Dec. 28, (Not Given). Joel died on July 9, 1830. Both were buried in St. John's church yard. Their children were: James ADAMS; born March 21, 1776; Sarah ADAMS (m. Isaac Tucker); born December 22, 1778; Frances ADAMS; born September 1, 1781 and died in infancy; Joel ADAMS, born March 6, 1784; William Weston ADAMS, born October 15, 1786; Henry Walker ADAMS, born January 14, 1790; and Robert ADAMS born February 26, 1793.

General Notes: Husband - Julius G. HUGUENIN

"Julius G. Huguenin was born on the 2lst of March 1840 at Point Comfort near Roseland, and was remarkable from his childhood, for his beauty, we (two brothers) went to school at Mrs. Richardson's, then two years to our Uncle Ed Morrall as private tutor, and two years to Ed Thomas. We were then sent to Charleston, to Mr. Rivers (afterwards professor in S.C. College) where we studied three more, in May 1853 we went to Bluffton and in Jan. 1854 to Beaufort. I to receive private instruction from T.J. Wells, Julius to go to Beaufort College, from there in l855 he stayed at hone, and went to Mr. Smith at Grahamville, then to Mr. Thomas at the same place, in the winter of 1856 he went to the University of Va. and in the fall of 1858 entered the Medical College at Charleston as a student of medicine, in the spring of 1860 he graduated, and on the 10th of May married Miss. Mary H. Adams, daughter of James W. and Sally H. Adams, at the residence of her father near Columbia, to whom he had been engaged some months, a charming woman, who has made him an excellent wife, he returned home to pursue his profession, and on the 2lst of May 1861 near Columbia his first and only child was born Julius G.
At the breaking out of the war he moved his family to Columbia, and in the winter of 1861 became an extra aide to Gen. Robert E, Lee, from hence, he transferred himself to the staff of Major General Pemberton. He was then in 1862 appointed 1st Lieutenant, Company A. 1st Battery South Carolina, Sharpshooters, and assigned to duty as Adjutant. He with the Battery was encamped at Grahamville, Moultrie, Coosawhatchee, Pocotaligo, James Island; Georgetown (Battery White) in the fall of 1863 the Battery was amalgamated with the Charleston Battery making the 2nd South Carolina Regt. he served sometime at Fort Sumter, (then under Lt. Col. Stephen Elliott) and in the spring of 1864 was ordered to Va. participated in the Battle of Cold Harbor, and others, and at Petersburg in command of his company, captured more Yankees than he had men in his company, reached the breastworks, and was shot in the groin and side, was recommended for promotion by General Hagood for gallant conduct, and would have been Lt. Col. of the Regt., at the last reorganization, had the war lasted two months longer. After being shot, he was carried to the hospital where he was taken with pleurisy, recovering, he was sent home and in October 1864 returned to duty, in February 1865 was sent to Fort Fisher where after that place fell, he with his Regt. were captured, confined for awhile in the Old Capital prison, then sent to Fort Deleware, from there after the fall of "The banner of the bars" he was sent home where he reached July 4th, 1865. He settled in Richland County, and commenced to practice medicine, and plant, lost a good deal of money in 1867 but on the whole has been very fortunate, and having complete control of certain people, there is no doubt if his health last, that he will be a man of wealth. He has vast energy, and good judgment, for history smiles on him in all things, and being always, or almost always fortunate, he knows not the pain of hope deferred."

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Hopkins ADAMS

Sally Hopkins ADAMS was born 10 January 1843 according to internet postings. She married Edward McCrady CLARKSON. Her birth year according to information on her grave provides an alternate birth year of 1841.

Sally is given as the mother of Edward McCrady CLARKSON, Jr, born 1878, and Amelia G. CLARKSON, born 1879, conflicting with her death date given below. SPECULATING that she may have died from childbirth with Amelia at age 35 and nine months in 1879, that would indicate Sally was born in 1843/44.

General Notes: Husband - Elijah Daniel WATSON

Elijah D. WATSON, born 9 August 1833, a son of Artemus WATSON and Lucretia DANIEL, is said to be a twin to Sarah A. WATSON. He was called "Ringeyed Lige."

Elijah married Ellen ADDISON about 1855.

"On that sunny day when we climbed to the terrace, my father, Elijah Daniel Watson, rode away to war and childhood ended. As a "Daughter of Edgefield," his wife Ellen, with me and my little sister, waved prettily from the courthouse steps as the First Edgefield Volunteers assembled on the square. Her handsome Lige, wheeling his big roan and flourishing a crimson pennant on his saber, pranced in formation in the company of cavalry formed and captained by his uncle Tillman Watson. Governor Andrew Pickens saluted the new company from the terrace, and so did Mama's cousin Selden Tilghman, the first volunteer from our Old Edgefield District and its first casualty. Called to the top step to inspire his townsmen, the young cavalry officer used one crutch to wave the blue flag of the Confederacy....
Four years after his bugled glory on the courthouse square, Private Lige Watson, having lost his horse, walked home from war. Papa told us of the sack and burning of Columbia by General Sherman, evoking the capital's lone chimneys, the black skeletons of its noble oaks. Astonished that Clouds Creek and Edgefield Court House had been left untouched, he said, "You folks at home know nothing of real war."
