General Notes: Wife - Iris E. MARSH

Iris E. Southwood, age 71, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 12, 2014 at her home in Yakima with her family at hand. Iris was born Dec. 9, 1942 at her grandfather's family home in Anadarko, OK. She was the firstborn to Elaine Garrett-Marsh and Ira A. Marsh, while he was overseas in Europe during WWII. She was the eldest sister to Linda Diedrich and Carolyn Ackerson.
As a young woman, she met Marvin Southwood (Sonny) in Wichita, Kansas at a basketball game and married after a very brief engagement. Soon they were raising a daughter, Roxanne Southwood, and a son, Chester Lee Southwood. They relocated to Washington State in the Seattle area where they lived for 6 years. During that time, Iris earned her nursing degree and began her long career in many different fields of nursing. This was always a labor of love and an endless source of fascination for her. She was also an avid reader, quite intelligent with a voracious appetite for learning. Iris, Sonny, and family later moved to Moses Lake, Kennewick, and finally to Yakima.
After her husband Sonny's passing, she moved to their country property where she enjoyed living with her animals, many of which she had rescued. When she became ill, her beloved sister Linda came to live with her and lovingly took amazing care of her for 3 years until Iris' passing.
She is preceded in death by her parents and husband. Her surviving relatives - Aunt Dolli Garrett, sisters Linda and Carolyn, daughter Roxanne (Jeff Throop), son Chester, nieces and nephews Christine Monson (Glen), Teresa Garrett, Mike Kiser, Michael Cummings, Stevie Ball; grandchildren Tristan Hall, Sidra Spencer, Nigel Hall, Ethan Hall, Tiernan Hall, Chester Southwood, and 7 great grandchildren.
Many thanks to angelic friends Robin and Ron Guthrie, Bev and Dave Prescott. Thanks to Hospice staff and especially her nurse and friend, Jeannie.
Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

General Notes: Husband - Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN

Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN married Martha A. MARSH, daughter of Capt. Bryant MARSH and Martha DANIEL on December 5, 1828 in Wilcox County, Alabama. By the 1830 census, Alex and Martha had a daughter.

1830 U.S. Census, Alabama, Wilcox County, Southern District; Series: M19 Roll: 3 Page: 162:

The children of Alexander and Martha PERRYMAN, from a study of various postings and censuses from 1830 to 1930, are presented below. Postings on Internet sites indicate as many as 14 children. A study of the censuses indicates eleven or less children.
1. Abt 1829, Elizabeth Maria daughter under 5 in 1830 and 10-15 in 1840, in the 1850 and 60 censuses as "E. M. TALIAFER(R)O." "Eliza SMITH 48 AL SC SC" in 1880. There are only two female children listed in 1840, one 10-14, and one under 5.
2. Abt 1831, Edmund, d. 1833. No record?
3. Abt 1835, Edmund, so named for his deceased brother. No record, not in the 1840 census?
4. Abt 1836, William D., Male under 5 in 1840 census, age 14 in 1850.

5. Abt 1838, Martha A., age 11 in the 1850 and 20 in the 1860 census. (Named "Mattie", age 26 in 1870, age 33 in 1880, and age 78 in the 1920 census?)
6. Abt 1840, Gustams, died as an infant. No record? The 1840 census records only one male child, under 5, William D.
7. Abt 1840, Bryant W., age 9 in the 1850 census.
8. Abt 1843, Alex Travis, age 7 in the 1850 census.
9. Abt 1846, Catherine Emma, age 4 in the 1850, C. E. age 14 in 1860, Emma, age 23 in 1870, Catherine WOOLRIDGE age 55 in 1910, and Emma WOOLRIDGE age 75 in the 1920 census.
10. Abt 1848, Elizabeth Viola, age 2 in the 1850 census, named as "E. V." age 11 in 1860, Viola, age 21, in the 1870 census.
11. Abt 1851, "S. R." age 9 in 1860, Samuel, age 19 in the 1870, and Samuel R. in the 1880 census.

QUESTIONS REMAIN about the two sons named Edmund, both may have died before 1840. The 1840 census shows one son, age under 5, William D., corresponding to the 1850 and 1860 censuses. SPECULATIVELY, in the 1860 census of Tensas Parish, Louisiana, there is an "E. B. PERRYMAN" age 28, born in Alabama, living in the home of A. T. W. ALEXANDER 36 AL. "E. B." might be "Edmund Bryant" a combination of the first names of Martha's brother who died in 1831 and her father, Capt. Bryant MARSH. IF SO, where was he in the 1840 and 50 censuses?

NOTE: Martha's relationship to this Mary J. RICHARDSON, if any, is not discovered. One researcher posted: "The exact relationship to this family is uncertain, but it may exist through Mary J. This cannot be true. James Madison RICHARDSON and wife, Mary J. McDOWELL, and children are named in the 1880 and 1900 censuses in Greenville, South Carolina. RLD)

Notes: Marriage

Alexander PERRYMAN & Martha A. MARSH by James A. BUTLER, J.P. Alexander PERRYMAN & Joseph S. RYAN, security. 12/5/1828. 4851

General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Maria PERRYMAN

Elizabeth Marie PERRYMAN, born about 1829 in Alabama, was a daughter of Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN and his wife, Martha A. MARSH. In the 1830 census of Wilcox County, Alabama, they have a female under 5 in their home. In the 1840 census of Conecuh County, Alabama, Alexander's household has two children listed, a female 10-15, presumably Elizabeth Maria, and a female under 5, known to be Martha A.

Family researchers write that Elizabeth, or Maria, first married a "TALIAFERRS" and second Benjamin Brown SMITH.

In the 1850 census of Conecuh County, "E. M. 21 F AL" is the wife of Dr. Robert H. TALIAFERRO, age 30. No children are listed. Named in their household is Martha A. PERRYMAN, 12, Elizabeth's sister.

In the 1860 census of Clarke County, Mississippi, "E. M. TALIAFERO (sic) 27 F X --- 25,000 AL" is listed in Alexander and Martha's home, ostensibly a widowed daughter, without children, but with an estate. At age 27, E. M. is about 3-4 years younger than Alexander's female under 5 in 1830 and perhaps the reason "Maria" is thought by some to be a separate daughter of Alexander and Martha PERRYMAN.

Eliza and family have not been located in the 1870 census, but "Eliza W F 48 Wife M Keeping house AL SC SC" is the wife of Benjamin B. SMITH in the 1880 census of Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Her age, state of birth, and parents' states of birth correspond with her being a daughter of Alexander and Martha PERRYMAN, and confirms her name as Elizabeth. Eliza and Benjamin have four children, Katie, the oldest, 16, suggesting she married Benjamin about 1862.

Eliza, widowed, resides in the home of her daughter, Katherine Emma BOYKIN in the 1900 through 1920 censuses of Lauderdale County, Mississippi.

Eliza Perryman SMITH died in 1928 at about 98 years of age. She is buried in Section 6, Rose Hill Cemetery, Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. A picture of her grave marker is on Find A Grave Memorial# 22330248 created by Michelle Woodham on Oct 21, 2007:

ELIZA PERRYMAN
SMITH
1828 - 1926

The memorial lists her birth on Sep. 4, 1829 in Wilcox County, Alabama, and her death on Mar. 23, 1926 in Vicksburg, Warren County, Mississippi. It also links to her husband, Benjamin Brown SMITH (1816 - 1882), and provides that Eliza was the daughter of Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN & Martha A. MARSH.

General Notes: Child - Edmund PERRYMAN

This Edmund PERRYMAN may have died soon after being born. A list of children of Alexander and Martha Marsh PERRYMAN shows two sons named Edmund. The second likely named for the deceased brother.

General Notes: Child - Edmund PERRYMAN

This is a second son named Edmund PERRYMAN. As sometimes seen in this time period, a younger child might bear the name of a previous child who had died.

No record of this Edmund has been found. The 1840 census shows only one male child in Alexander and Martha PERRYMAN's family, age under 5, identified as son William D., born about 1836. Edmund is presumed to have died before 1840.

SPECULATION: In the 1860 U.S. Census, Louisiana, Tensas Parish, Waterproof P O; Series: M653 Roll: 426 Page: 489, an "E. B. PERRYMAN 28 M Manager AL" resides in the household of A. T. W. ALEXANDER 36 AL. "E. B." was born about 1832 and may be "Edmund Bryant." Edmund was the name of Martha's brother who died in 1831, Bryant was the name of her father. Insufficient evidence and as yet, nothing proves this connection. RLD)

General Notes: Child - William D. PERRYMAN

William D. PERRYMAN, 14, is named in the 1850 census of Conecuh County, Alabama in the home of his parents, Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN and Martha A. MARSH. He is the male under 5 noted in the 1840 census in Alexander's household.

William D PERRYMAN married N. E. DUNLAP on 21 January 1858 in Clarke County, Alabama. Nancy is not with him in the 1860 census. Separated?

William has relatives living in Mobile; the record below may be his.
POSSIBLE:

William D. PERRYMAN has not been found in the 1870 census. Perished in the War Between the States?

General Notes: Child - Martha A. PERRYMAN

Martha A. PERRYMAN was born about 1838, daughter of Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN and Martha A. MARSH. She was called "Mattie." The 1840 census one female under 5 in her father's household.

In 1850 census of Conecuh County, Alabama, "Martha A. PERRYMAN 12 F AL" lives in the household of Dr. Robert H. and E. M. TALIAFERRO. E. M. is Martha's sister Elizabeth. Martha's parents and family also reside in Conecuh County. Curiously, she is also listed there as "Martha A. " 11 F AL."

In 1860, both Martha and Elizabeth are listed in their parents home in Clarke County, Mississippi, Martha as "M. A. " 20 F X AL" and Elizabeth as "E. M. TALIAFERO 27 F X --- 25,000 AL."

General Notes: Child - Bryant M. PERRYMAN

In the 1850 census, Conecuh County, Alabama, Bryant W. PERRYMAN, 9, is in his parent's home. In 1860 in Clarke County, Mississippi, B. M. PERRYMAN, 18, is a student of medicine.

Byrant fought for the Confederacy in the War Between the States. He was mustered into State service on 8 March 1862 in Enterprise, Mississippi as a private in the 37th Mississippi Infantry regiment.Company B. McLain's Rifles, Clarke, County. (netpathway.com/%7Eccr/37th_reg.html>)

Bryant survived the seige at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and is named in the Confederate Parole Records. After the siege, captured Confederate soldiers surrendered their arms, signed a parole notice promising not to take up arms against the United States and were released:

Catherine Emma PERRYMAN was a daughter of Alexander Doniphan PERRYMAN and Martha A. MARSH. Catherine and Emma are named as separate children by some researchers; however, the census ages of the girls in various censuses, never in the same household or same census, the 1850 entry as "Catherine E." and her being named Catherine WOOLDRIDGE (sic) 1910 and as Emma WOOLRIDGE in 1920, as a sister of Viola in both, are proof they are the same person.

General Notes: Child - Samuel R. PERRYMAN

Samuel R. PERRYMAN is first found as "S. R." age 9, born in Alabama, in the home of his parents Alexander Doniphan Martha A. Marsh PERRYMAN and in the 1860 census of Clarke County, Mississippi. He is erroneously listed as female. This census indicates he was born about 1850, but in the 1900 census his birth wass in August 1855.

Ostensibly, Samuel was named for his deceased uncle, Samuel PERRYMAN who was born on 17 Feb 1797 in Edgefield District, South Carolina and died on 17 Jun 1838 in Abbeville County, South Carolina at age 41.

In 1870, Samuel is head of household in Clarke County, Mississippi, apparently providing support for his widowed mother and three sisters. The value of his estate at age "19" may be inheritance from his father.

Samuel remained single until 27 years old according to the 1930 census. Born about 1853, the conclusion is he married soon after the 1880 census. His wife's surname has not been found; however, Johnson Bland Mobley, Jr., in his book, states that "Samuel PERRYMAN married Elizabeth P. _______. They had two sons." Who are they and where are they in 1900 and 1910?

SPECULATION: In 1900, Sam is a widower, without accompanying family, in Harris County, Texas. In 1910, he, 56, widower, and Julia PERRYMAN, 21, single, born in Mississippi, are roomers in the same boarding house. Their relationship is not known, but a Julia PERRYMAN, age 11, niece, lives in the home of her 64 year old aunt, Celine RIGGS, in the 1900 census of Perry County, Mississippi, perhaps Sam's daughter after her mother died? Also in Perry County in 1900 is a Mattie PERRYMAN, 15, adopted daughter, living in the home of Hugh McCOMB, 44, and his mother, M. J. McCOMB, 64, posing another possibility?

No one can tell me who Parte is. It appears Josephine lost four children before they were Adults and earlier on. (Martha, Earline, Norman Lee, and Parte - no one ever spoke about them, but I did find out about one mentioned; as children they referred to her as Darryl [I believe to be Martha] or something close to that. He stated she passed from complications like Phenomena and took deathly sick from eating snow when making snow cone in the winter and the smaller children loved her for that [Can't find any records for her] -- reference made my Cousin Charles Marsh, Jr., Aurora, CO. on August 2003). General Notes: Husband - William WIGGINS III

William Wiggins was closely allied with the Bryant MARSH family of Sumter County, Alabama. William and Bryan MARSH, Sr., bought land together in Sumter Co, Alabama in 1831. They were associated in Clarke County, Alabama, and in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The MARSH family followed the WIGGINS to Smith County, Texas. In Texas, both families owned large plantations. In addition to their farming, the WIGGINS started a drug business, while the MARSH family operated a general merchandizing business. William and Sarah's son, Lt. Thomas WIGGINS was a pharmacist who served in the War Between the States with both Peter MARSH and later with Capt. Bryan MARSH, Jr. in Company C, 17th Texas Cavalry. Thomas died during the war. In 1860, Thomas had 7 slaves.
William WIGGINS is on a Smith County Slave Schedule in 1860.
WILLIAM WIGGINS AND FAMILY "Biographies of Old Settlers." Historical, Personal and Reminiscent. Volume I By Sid S. Johnson, 1900: Sid S. Johnson, Publisher, Tyler, Texas Chapter LXXXV--Pages 343-344. William Wiggins was a native of North Carolina; moved to Alabama, and married Miss Sarah Marsh, who was a native Alabamian. He moved to Texas in 1850, and settled near Mt. Carmel, where he died about the close of the civil war. He was a prominent planter--a man of great popularity by all who knew him. He was an old, Southern gentleman of that school which gave the South such prominence for generous hospitality. Mr. and Mrs. Wiggins raised four children--John M., Thomas, Mary E. and Ed W. John M. Wiggins married Miss Laura Bates; they raised four children-- Sallie, Mittie, J.W. and Ida. Sallie married John P. Smith; Mittie married Geo. R. Kennedy; Ida married John B. Douglas. Ida died about one year after her marriage. J.W. married Miss Mattie Rountree. Geo died several years ago, leaving a widow and one son--Chesley. Mary E. Wiggins married Geo. W. Bates; they raised two children--Jas. W. and Dora. Jas W. was killed in Tyler, soon after the close of the civil war. Dora married Chas. Reeves; they have three children; they reside in Mineola, Texas. Thomas Wiggins married Miss Sallie Wadsworth; several children. All dead. Ed B. Wiggins married Miss Eliza Roberts; they have four children-- Lizzie, Mary, Eddice and Florence. Lizzie married John A. Bonner; they have three children--Edmund, Jack and Elizabeth. Mary married Jas. S. Loftin; they have two children--Sophie and Elizabeth. Eddie and Florence reside with their parents, No. 540 Bois'dArc St., Tyler, Texas. The Wiggins families have occupied the front seats in business. The OLIPHANT family is related to the NICHOLSON, THREEWITZ and (O')DANIEL family in South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It would be interesting if S. R. OLIPHANT was related to these families because Carmen SWANSON, great-granddaughter of Timothy HERLIHY and his first wife, Catherine FITZGERALD, married into the (O')DANIEL family (James Ulmer DANIEL) in 1936 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Your compiler is Carmen's eldest son Robert Louis Daniell)
