Obituary: Anne "Grannie Annie" Riggins died on Thursday, November 17, 2006, in Naples, Italy, of complications from a heart attack while on the "Life and Teachings of Paul" tour of Greece and Italy. She was born August 6, 1935, to Frank B. and Emily Chapeau Langley in Jacksonville, FL. As a long-time resident of Atlantic Beach, she was employed for many years as an ER nurse at University (Shands) Hospital in Jacksonville, and she was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Ponte Vedra. She completed her nursing career at Beaches Baptist Hospital, retiring from there in 2002, at which time she relocated to The Villages, FL. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother, full of energy and excitement for life. A devoted Christian, she was a member of the Eucharistic Christian Women (ECW) at St. George Episcopal Church in The Villages, Florida, where she was a Lay Person who served on the altar, served communion to the homebound, and served on the Kairos Prison Ministries, working with female prisoners. At The Villages, she was a member of "G.R.I.T.S." (Girls Raised In The South) Red Hat Club and danced with The Villages Dance Team. On the inside cover of her travel journal that she had with her, she wrote, "Tourists pass through places. Places pass through pilgrims." In her life, she had traveled to Japan, China, Russia, Mexico, Isreal, the Holy Lands, Paris, London, and Hawaii. She lived to dance and she loved Southern Comfort Manhattans - with a cherry, of course. She is survived by her son, Martin David Propst (Stacey); daughter, Maryanne Riggins Hewitt (Brett); siblings, Frank Langley III, Teddy Langley, and "Swister" Wendy Dippel; and grandchildren, Martin David Propst II, Timothy Robert Propst, Brittany Rebecca Hewitt, and Matthew Riggs Hewitt. She leaves her entire family with loving memories and we will miss her here even though we know she is now in the loving hands of God in Heaven. A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, November 22, at 3pm, at St. George Episcopal Church, The Villages, Florida (near Leesburg). In lieu of flowers, the family will set up a nursing school scholarship fund to which donations can be applied. Donations may be sent to Anne Riggins Nursing Student Scholarship Fund, C/O Hewitt IDG, LLC, 14286-13 Beach Blvd #252, Jacksonville, FL 32250. ANSWERED THE CALL - One by one the old Confederates answer the roll call. Last Monday, Sep.8, 1902, when the great Captain called the name of P. T. Raiford, he answered as promptly as of yore, and his spirit passed away to a happier life. Squire Raiford was well known in St. Francis county, and was 61? years of age and came to this county ten years ago from Byhalia, Miss., and had been elected several times as magistrate of Madison township. He was a member of the 17th Mississippi Infantry, and served gallantly throughout the Civil war. As a citizen, the Squire was among the best; as a companion none held a closer place among his friends. He was a member of the N. B. Forrest Camp Confederates No.623, and was foremost in furthering the cause of the old soldier. The Squire had been feeble for two years, and had been taken to Memphis for treatment, and despite all the medical community attempted, he passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Ike Mallory. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. G. N. Laughinghouse and Mrs. Ike Mallory and a son in Memphis, to mourn his loss. The remains were interred in the Mt.Vernon cemetery Tuesday morning under the auspices of the Masonic lodge, Rev. H. W. Dyer of the Methodist church officiating, assisted by Rev. J. J. Cornish of the Episcopal church. When all the ceremonies were completed, his old companions in arms gathered around the grave, while the bugler of the camp played "Taps". Circuit clerk adjourned for the burial of the Squre, and attended the burial. Forrest City Times Newspaper, Sep. 12, 1902.

Lodowick Hill (my great grandfather) and his brother, John Lark, married two CHRISTIAN sisters, one of whom died. The widower then married a third sister. According to my father, both brothers and their families lived in the same house in AL, and if a child misbehaved he was as likely to "get a whipping" from his aunt or uncle as his mother or father. We have a raft of double cousins from these unions, some of whom moved to Kemper County, MS, and are still living in the area. (Gil Robison, email, 11/07/2004) 670

J L Yearta died 17 September 1996 in Georgia at age 61. Georgia. Certificate Number 901036. ["Georgia Death Index, 1933-1998,"]

Obituary: A 32-year Army veteran, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jesse L. Yearta was a highly decorated soldier and a prisoner of war who escaped from his Communist captors in Vietnam after three years in a bamboo cage.
Mr. Yearta, 61, of Hogansville, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Alabama.
While held by the Viet Cong, Mr. Yearta and his comrades were able to concoct an explosive powder that helped free them.
"Jesse and three other prisoners made their escape, running and swimming as far and fast as they could," said his wife, Gloria Yearta. "But the Viet Cong pursued relentlessly with bloodhounds and two of them did not make it."
During the Vietnam War, Mr. Yearta fought in the Battle of An Loc near Saigon. "Jesse and his comrades were surrounded by the North Vietnamese artillery and infantry for nearly 90 days," his wife said.
During his career, he served in the infantry, an armored battalion, an intelligence group, an airborne and a Ranger company. He was trained at Fort Benning and fought in the Korean War.
His awards included the Distinguished Service Cross, eight Purple Hearts, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He retired in 1983 while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
After retiring, he taught college courses in criminal justice. He moved to Hogansville five years ago.
Mr. Yearta entertained children at Scottish Rite and Egleston children's hospitals as a member of the Red Devil Clown Unit of Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Claude A. McKibben & Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Burial will be with full military honors at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Meriwether County.
Other survivors include three daughters, Kathy Brawner of LaGrange, Karen Newton and Penny Willingham, both of Hogansville; a son, Kenny Yearta of LaGrange; a stepdaughter, Melissa Greene of Dahlonega; two sisters, Ruth Jones of Greenville, S.C., and Betty Jo Cape of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, Douglas Yearta of Hogansville; and eight grandchildren.

Distinguished Service Cross
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class Jesse L. Yearta, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant First Class Jessie L. Yearta distinguished himself while serving as an advisor to the 81st Ranger Group, Army of the Republic of Vietnam during the period 20 April 1972 to 20 May 1972. The 81st Ranger Group was given the mission of retaking a northern sector of the besieged provincial capital of An Loc, held by enemy forces. Sergeant Yearta constantly exposed himself to the enemy fire and directed airstrikes and other supporting fires as the battalion quickly regained control of a portion of the area. During this period, he infiltrated into enemy held areas of the city and directed highly successful airstrikes on the enemy positions around him and was repeatedly subjected to indirect and small arms fire. On three other occasions, as the enemy attempted regimental-size attacks supported by tanks and artillery in an attempt to overrun the friendly positions, Sergeant Yearta again exposed himself, at great personal risk, from rooftops and forward positions to adjust airstrikes and successfully thwart the enemy's attempts. The courage and determination he instilled in the Vietnamese forces by his personal example was crucial in the successful completion of their mission. Sergeant First Class Yearta's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him and the United States Army.

Find A Grave Memorial# 127190951 records Judge Hal McKnight Lattimore is buried in Mansfield Cemetery, Mansfield, Tarrant County, Texas. It also presents this obituary:

FORT WORTH \emdash He survived a close encounter with a shark, the crash-landing of a glider he was riding in and the 1992 shootings in a Tarrant County courthouse \emdash not to mention World War II. But former 2nd Court of Appeals Judge Hal M. Lattimore, who followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who had themselves been jurists, could not escape death forever. Judge Lattimore, 93, died Thursday of congestive heart failure at his home with his family at his side. Those who knew him best say there were two sides to him. One was his love of the law. The other was a sense of adventure. In both he was always willing to help anybody who he thought needed it. And in both, he never backed down from a challenge. "If Hal wanted to do it, if he had a passing fancy for it, he gave it everything he had and didn't stop until he was the best you could possibly be at it," said 2nd Court of Appeals Judge Bill Meier, who said that Judge Lattimore was one of the first lawyers he met when he moved to Tarrant County in 1969. In 1973, in his first year as a state senator, Meier, by then a law partner of Judge Lattimore's, recommended that Gov. Dolph Briscoe appoint Judge Lattimore to fill a vacancy on the 96th state District Court bench \emdash the same one that Judge Lattimore's father had held. Judge Lattimore felt at home whether below the surface of the sea or above the clouds in the sky. After a 1978 Star-Telegram article in which he told the story of coming face to face with a hammerhead estimated at 14 feet long and 1,000 pounds and how, rather than swim away, he charged at it, courthouse colleagues hung a photo of him inscribed with the words, "WHO ELSE could scare a shark?"
Legal mentor
Judge Lattimore was born Oct. 13, 1920, in Fort Worth to Judge Hal. S. Lattimore and Kate McKnight Lattimore. After graduating from high school, he headed for Baylor University. While there he earned his pilot's license in anticipation of what would become World War II. During the war he flew transport planes. Afterward he resumed his studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned his law degree. In college, he was a champion fencer, helped found a chapter of the honorary legal fraternity Phi Alpha Delta and served as a flying instructor for a university club. He practiced law with his father from 1948 until the senior Lattimore's death in 1969.
State District Judge David L. Evans, presiding judge of the 8th Administrative Judicial Region, credited Judge Lattimore, his uncle, with helping him through law school and his early years as a lawyer. "Hal was tremendous influence on my life, and I owe a great deal of any success I have had to him," Evans said Saturday. "He was more than an uncle; he was mentor and a friend." On July 1, 1992, Judge Lattimore, by then a member of the 2nd Court of Appeals, was in his chambers when a gunman opened fire at the bench, killing two lawyers and wounding two other members of the court. A third lawyer was also shot.
A soaring personality
Judge Lattimore loved the outdoors and would make his own tents on camping and hunting trips, his son Michael Lattimore said. He helped found the Southwest Council of Diving Clubs and served as its first president, but flying, whether in a motorized plane or a glider, remained his first passion. After decades of membership, leadership and participation, Judge Lattimore was honored by the Soaring Association of America with the creation of the Hal M. Lattimore Trophy, presented each year. Michael Lattimore said Saturday that he couldn't recall ever hearing his father curse. "He acted the way you were expected to act," he said. That extended to his willingness to help others. Meier said Judge Lattimore was the only lawyer he ever knew who didn't mail out invoices. Instead, he waited for clients to realize they hadn't paid. "He once said that as a lawyer you have to make yourself available to the people who need you," Michael Lattimore said. "There was no fee schedule with him. He sized you up, and if he thought you were really trying, by God he would come out with all guns blazing."
Judge Lattimore's survivors also include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Hill Lattimore; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lattimore; a sister, Mary Kay Evans; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Willie Alicia Raiford Laughinghouse is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Forrest City, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Find A Grave Memorial# 16436557 presents this obituary:
Mrs.Willie Alicia Laughinghouse died at the Baptist hospital in Memphis at midnight, Wednesday night, Mar.18,1925, of meningitus, contracted following an operation for mastoids a few days ago. The body will arrive in Forrest City on the California Special this afternoon, and funeral services will be held sometime Friday. Mrs. Laughinghouse was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Raiford. On Dec.23,1887, she was united in marriage with Mr. Newman Laughinghouse who preceded her in death 12 years ago. To their union were born three children, two of whom, Mrs. Fred Seaton of this city, and Lieutenant Newman Laughinghouse, survive. Lt. Laughinghouse is stationed in Manilla, the Phillipines Islands, in the aviation division of the U.S.Army. Deceased is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ike Mallory, and a half brother, Matthew Raiford of Memphis. A particularly sad feature of the case is that her sister, Mrs. Mallory, is also in the Baptist hospital for a similar operation, and will be unable to attend the funeral. Mrs. Laughinghouse was a devoted member of the Methodist church, and was loved and admired by a large host of friends in the City and County, who mourn with the bereaved family in their loss. General Notes: Husband - Colonel Hamilton LAWRENCE, USMC, WWII

After returning to his Coronado home from duty at Guadalcanal, where he supervised night fighter operations early in 1943, Marine Major Hamilton Lawrence, 29, of 357 D ave., is anxious to return to Pacific action in command of a fighter squadron in time to help drive the Japs out of the Philippine islands, his birthplace. The major yesterday recalled exciting moments from his first taste of battle. He made 10 flights over Rabaul for observation purposes in the heat of the conflict there. Speaking of land from a naval vessel at Green island, he said, "it was a bug's eye view for an aviator to stand on the deck and watch those Jap dive bombers come down. Also to watch their bombs come down - and miss!" Major Lawrence entered marine aviation in 1937 and was comissioned in September 1938. He was promoted to his present rank in March 1943, after serving at Guadalcanal and bougainville. His wife, the former Irene Bibbs Spears, and their 21 month old daughter, Irene, reside with him in Coronado. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lawrence, of San Francisco. [The San Diego Union, San Diego, California, Sunday, June 18, 1944, Page 39]

"Hamilton Lawrence, '36, of Coronado, Calif., January 8, at 85, of cancer. At 15 he sailed as a cabin boy on a Swedish ship; at 17 he made his first solo airplane flight. He earned his degree in social science and social thought and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. He served in the Marines as a naval aviator from 1937 to 1965, rising to the rank of colonel. He left the military to work as chief pilot for Executive Jet Aviation in Geneva. He retired from flying in 1975. His wife of 51 years, Irene, predeceased him. Survivors: his daughter, Irene, '64; two sons, James and Erik; five grandchildren; and his sister, Kate Rice." Notes: Marriage

Middleburg - Miss Irene Spears and Lieutenant Hamilton Lawrence, United States Marine Corps, were married Saturday at Glen Welby, the home of his cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baird, near Marshall. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Arnold Spears of San Francisco, came to Virginia with her mother a week ago, to be married to Lieutenant Lawrence, an aviator with the First Air Craft Fighting Squadron, stationed at Quantico. Lieutenant Lawrence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hamilton Lawrence of San Francisco and his mother was formerly Miss Fanno [sic] Cary of Baltimore, who has spent much time in this part of Virginia with her sister, Mrs. Fairfax Harrison, at Belvoir. The wedding took place at noon in the long drawing room at Glen Welby, where an improvised altar was arranged before a window and decorated with magnolia leaves, white gladioli and lit with cathedral candles. The Rev. Howard Harper of The Plains performed the ceremony, which was attended by only the immediate families... Lieutenant Lawrence and his best man, Lieutenant Menard Doswell of New Orleans, wore their white uniforms... They went directly to New Bern, N. C., where Lieutenant Lawrence is on maneuvers. Their wedding trip will have to be deferred for a while. Upon their return from the South they will live at Quantico... Guests from a distance included Wilson Miles Cary, uncle of the groom, of Baltimore; Dr. and Mrs. Gerhart Dieke (she was formerly Miss Sally Harrison of Belvoir); Mrs. J. A. Ulman, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. W. Iglehart, Mr. and Mrs. John McKim White, and John McKin White, Jr., all of Baltimore; Mrs. Ernest Rosenstrater, Miss Barbara Rosenstrater and Murray Brookman of San Francisco; James Young of Chicago. Others were Mrs. Fairfax Harrison, Miss Barbara Baird, Miss Mazie Baird, Richard Harrison, Richard Harrison, Charles Baird and Harrison Baird. General Notes: Child - Laura A. LAWRENCE

"Larrah A." LAWRENCE is age 9, born in Alabama, living with her parents Joseph LAWRENCE and Elizabeth PITTS, in the 1850 census of Henry County, Alabama.

Laura married Samuel C. DANIELL about 1858. She and Samuel had ten children.

On 22 July 1893, Laura L. DANIEL, is named as an heir to Samuel C. DANIEL in S. G. ROBERTSON's petition for Letters of Administration on her husband's estate. (Barbour County, Alabama Orphans Book 27, p. 186)

In the 1900 U.S. Census, Laura L. DANIEL (sic), 58, is listed in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama in the household of her son, Samuel, 35. Sam is single and his mother and two brothers, Lawrence, 21, and Willis B., 20 complete the household.

In 1910 she living with a son, W. H. L. DANIELL, 39, in Barbour County, Alabama. Also in the home is her son, "Jim L.", and a cousin, Will L. CARTER. (Is CARTER a clue to Laura A.'s maiden name?) "Laura Mother F W 69 Wd - 10 6 AL GA GA" indicates she has had 10 children, 6 still living in 1910. Names of seven children have been found.

Laura has not yet been found in the 1920 census.

Laura A. DANIEL, of Batesville, Alabama, is named as an heir of her son, W. H. L. DANIEL, in a petition for Letters of Administration on his estate filed by his brother, Samuel C. DANIEL, on 5 June 1924.

Obituary: Eufaula, Ga. [sic, Ala.] June 23. Mrs. Laura Daniel, aged 79 years died early this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. A. Warren, Batesville, Ala., 24 miles from Eufaula, after a long illness. The remains reached Eufaula on the noon train and the funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon from the home of her son, S, C, Daniel. She was a pioneer of Eufaula, only going to make her home with her daughter about a year ago after the death of the sons at the old home with her. In youth she was known as the most beautiful girl in the community, where the family were very prominent. She leaves one daughter, Mrs. Warren, Batesville, and one son, H. C. Daniel [*], Eufaula. [The Columbus Daily Enquirer, Columbus, Georgia, Wednesday, June 24, 1925, Page 8.]
[*Laura's son, S. C. Daniell, Jr., Eufaula, died in 1931. "H. C.", initials or coresponding name, is not found in records for the family and is likely a misprint for "S. C." RLD]

On her death certificate, Laura L. DANIELS [sic], born about 1841 in Alabama was the daughter of Joseph LAURENCE [sic] and Elizabeth PITTS, both born in Georgia. Laura, a resident of Eufaula, died in Beteville [sic] Junction, Barbour County, Alabama on 22 June 1925 at age 84 and was buried in Eufaula, Alabama. A curious entry on the certificate: "Spouse's Name: Winslow S. C." Laura's husband was Samuel C. Daniell, Sr. An informant is not listed. [Family Search Film Number: 1908271, Reference Number: cn 12872, Collection: Alabama Deaths, 1908-1974]

Laura's grave in Eufaula, Barbour County, Alabama has not been located.
