(NOTE by RLD: The town of Vaucluse is located in Aiken County. Purisburg, South Carolina was a Swiss Hugenot settlement on the river above Savannah, Georgia. Might these be "Viond" and "Potersburg"? A comment at Pottery & Porcelain - American (cont.), http://www.noteaccess.com/APPROACHES/DecorativeAA/PAmerican2.htm, makes this reasonable: "Much briefer is the account of a second porcelain maker, the elusive Samuel Bowen. In 1745 one Henry Gossman, aged eighteen, and 'son of a very poor helpless widow of Purisburg, South Carolina' [a Swiss Hugenot settlement on the river above Savannah], was apprenticed or 'bound to a potter'. This would appear to be Samuel Bowen, now occupying the potworks vacated by Duché two years before." )
Another Jesse DANIEL resides in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Argument may be made that he is the Jesse of 1810 Laurens County. The age of the two men are very close; Laurens and Spartanburg abut each other. Reuben DANIEL of Spartanburg also had a son Jesse, said to have married Maria SMITH. It is noteworthy that the given name Reuben was not carried down into the family of Jesse DANIEL of Cobb County, Georgia.

General Notes: Husband -
John COOK was born in Brunswick County, Virginia. There, on September 6, 1759, he married his first wife, Elizabeth "Betty" BROWN. John and Betty had three children, a son, Burell, and two daughters, Mary and Sarah.
In his Will dated 21 January 1764, proved 23 April 1764 in Brunswick County, Virginia, Henry COOK, John's brother, bequeathed the 330 acres to his son Thomas, named his wife Eleanor, and bequeathed a slave to each of his daughters, Mary and Salley. Mary and Salley [Sarah?"] were likely minors; if so, who was their guardian? Are there probate records for Henry's estate? Curiously, Mary and Sarah are the names of two of the three listed children of John COOK and Elizabeth "Betty" BROWN. Are they Henry COOK's daughters raised by John?
In this article, no daughter Sarah or Salley is named for John COOK and Elizabeth BROWN is named, but a daughter Elizabeth who married George McCRELLIS is. Elizabeth has been shown to the granddaughter of John COOKand daughter of John's son son BURRELL COOK. [Alexis Spirtas]
SOUTHSIDE VIRGINIA FAMILIES VI, John Bennet Bodie: Article shows; John COOKE first married with his father's consent, Betty, daughter of Mary and Burwell BROWN of Brunswick. Children: Elizabeth m. George McCRELLIS; Mary m. Colonel Thomas HUTCHISON of Columbia S.C.; Burwell m. Mary POPE. He [John] then married Martha, daughter of Captain John PEARSON and Mary RAIFORD Pearson. Their children were: John m. Mary Ellen HAMPTON; Nathaniel m. Susanna POPE and then Christianna CHAPPELL; Phillip m. Annie Martha WOOTEN; Isaac m. Elizabeth RIVES and Henry who remained unmarried. He [John] then married Sarah_____ who died in 1846 in Hancock. He had several other daughters who married; GRINDEST [GINDRAT], BELLAMY, HERBERT [HARBIRT], BATTLE and DANIEL [DANIELL].
A biography of John COOK, from the notes of Louisa Caroline Floyd Wilson, provided by her grandson, David Leon Wilson:
"John Cook was born in Brunswick County Virginia and married his first wife there. Her name was Betty Brown and they married on September 6, 1759. He was not twenty-one at the time and was spoken of as "Infant" in the marriage bonds and had to have the consent of his father. By this union, there were three children one son, Burell, and two (perhaps three) daughters that grew to adulthood and married. He moved to North Carolina and then South Carolina, settling on the Broad River, at what was later called "Cooks Ferry." It was located on the Broad, near Cedar Creek, making him a neighbor of James Daniell. [John COOK settled at what was later called "Cook's Ferry", located on the Broad River, near Cedar Creek, making him a neighbor of James DANIELL.* He may have had additional land in Richland County. Land records for John Cook in South Carolina are difficult to interpret as there are several John Cooks and even one other Captain John Cook in the records, although most are before 1759, when our John was in Virginia.

John Cook appears on a list of pardons from King George III and the Royal Governor of South Carolina in 6 Aug 1768 (Book PP 1771-1774 page 46). The pardon was for being a "Regulator" and it was contingent on their disbanding their force. The Regulators were formed in the 1760's in response to the state government's refusal to place any lawmen, judges or courts in the upcountry. Because of this, lawlessness was rampant and prominent citizens formed their own armed bands to clean out the nests of criminals, which they did, very effectively. There were excesses however, and soon the governor declared them illegal, hiring about 600 men of low character to clean them out. These men were called "Moderators". It never happened, probably because of the upcountry's support of the Regulator's cause. Ultimately, the only way the governor could get them to disband was to put judges, courts, and lawmen in the upcountry and pardon the Regulators.
John's first wife, Betty, must have died before 1772, when John Cook married second, Martha Pearson, daughter of Mariner John Pearson and his wife Mary Raiford and had nine children.
When the Revolutionary War broke out, John was a Captain in the 4th Continental Dragoons under Colonel William Washington. He fought in South Carolina and participated in the battles of Eutaw Springs, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse (History of the Revolution in South Carolina, Salley, page 44). Bobby Gilmer Moss, in " Roster of South Carolina Patriots During the American Revolution" also quotes Sally but has him as Captain under Lt. Col. Robert Goodwyn and Col. Richardson in 1778. During the period of the Revolution the non-combatants were treated so cruelly in South Carolina that John Cook's family, along with relatives and friends, fled to North Carolina where they remained until the close of the war (History of Hancock County).
In 1787 John was elected to the South Carolina Legislature for two terms, serving from 1787 to 1790. In 1788, he was elected to the State Convention to decide on the ratification of the United States Constitution. He voted against ratification, a sentiment likely popular with the voters in the backcountry as they had done without any government locally, a state government that had ignored them, and an oppressive British rule.
1790 Census: John Cook is listed in Fairfield County SC with 4 males under 16, one female, and 33 slaves. Two households away is Burrell Cook, his son, with 2 males under 16, and 2 females. Same page: Mary Pearson with no males over 16, 2 males under 16, and 3 females and 4 slaves. [Series: M637 Roll: 11 Page: 157]
Subsequently, John Cook moved to Georgia, where he settled upon the "bounties" given to him as a reward for his patriotism. His homestead [located on Island Creek in Western Hancock County, Georgia] appears on Adj. General Elholm's map of the Oconee frontier in 1793, located on Island Creek in Western Hancock county, where his neighbors included James and Levi Daniell and others from Fairfield County SC. He also had 1000 acres on Spring Creek (a tributary of Shoulderbone Creek) that he sold in 1795. He, or more likely his son John Cook, Jr., participated in the militia in Hancock County when he moved there as Captain, Vol. rifle Company, 1st Batt. Hancock Co. Regt.. Militia.

Capt. John COOK died in Hancock County, Georgia in 1798 and is buried in Island Creek Church Cemetery, 32 degrees, 12 minutes, 29 seconds W lat, 83 degrees, 10 minutes, 59 seconds W long, 16 miles WSW from Sparta, Georgia in Hancock County although I could not find his headstone. His will seems to be missing from the Hancock County Will Book but his estate papers are present where they are indexed at AA page 7-10, AA page 119-121, and AAA page 63-67. See LDS microfilm #222086. John Harbirt, John Cook, and Phillip Cook, administrators of the estate of John Cook dec'd. and John Ragan posted a security bond for L 3000 sterling 5 June 1798. His estate inventory, done 6 July 1798, shows John Cook's estate to be worth $7103.73, excluding land. He owned 19 slaves and the normal plantation and household equipment. The exception was his library, which was larger than most and contained primarily religious works. [John COOK died intestate.]
John Cook's biography appears in "Biographical Dictionary of South Carolina Representatives", Vol. 3, page 151-152 and is as follows: "John Cook lived near Cedar Creek in what became Fairfield County, South Carolina. He owned at least 300 acres, and in the Federal Census of 1790 recorded 33 slaves as his property. as a young man, he was involved in the Regulator movement (1767-69) in the backcountry and on 31 October 1771 was pardoned for his vigilante activities in a general decree of King George III. Service in the House was limited to election to the seventh (1787-1788) and Eighth (1789-1790) General Assemblies by the District between the Broad and Catawba Rivers. Representing Fairfield County at the State Convention, Cook voted against ratification of the Federal Constitution (1788). Other offices held by him include tax inquirer and collector for St. Marks Parish (1765) and for the District between the Broad and the Catawba Rivers (1785) and Militia Captain (1781). John Cook was deceased by 29 September 1802 when Philip Cook applied for letters of administration of his estate.
A John Cook received grants (1771-1786) for 1190 acres located in separate tracts near the Congaree and Broad Rivers. Most of this area became Richland County. There could have been another John Cook living in Richland County or the Fairfield and Richland landowners could have been one and the same. However, no direct tie could be made between the Richland grants and the John Cook who served in the House. The additional land was not included in his sketch."
*John COOK's daughter Martha Pearson COOK married Levi DANIELL, son of James DANIELL, in 1794 in Hancock County, Georgia.
Additional sources and information:
John and two of his brothers, Drury and Benjamin, moved to North Carolina, with John later moving again to South Carolina before 1767 and after the death of Betty. He recorded three land purchases, 300 acres on McCord's Ferry Road on 12 Sep 1770; 50 acres at the Head of Back Swamp bounded by lands of Nathan CENTER and John TAYLOR; and 100 acres on Dry Branch, on the road leading to Richard ADAMS', and the path from John COOK to Philip PEARSON, and bounded by John CARSON and Robert GOODWYN on 11 Mar 1773. (A History of Richland County South Carolina, Green)
The History of Hancock County, Georgia, II, p. 136, provides:
"John Cook, some years before the Revolution, moved to South Carolina and settled on the Broad River at what was later called "Cook's Ferry." He married in Brunswick County, Va., before coming to South Carolina, his wife being Miss Betty Brown. He married her September 6, 1759. At this time he was not 21 years of age as he is spoken of in the marriage bonds as "Infant," with the consent of Henry Cook, his father. By this first marriage there were three children who lived to be grown and married; one son and two daughters.
John COOK was a Captain in the Revolutionary War; was in the 4th Continental Dragoons, He was with Colonel William WASHINGTON in his South Carolina campaigns. His second wife was Martha PEARSON (daughter of Captain John PEARSON and his wife, Mary RAIFORD.), who whom he was married in 1772. The noncombatants were treated so cruelly in Carolina during the period of the Revolution that John COOK's family, along with relatives and friends, fled to North Carolina, where they remained until the close of the war, when they returned to South Carolina. After some eight years, John COOK moved to Georgia, where he settled upon the "Bounties" given to him as reward for his patriotism. He died in Hancock County in 1799. In Georgia histories he is spoken of as being very old at the time of his death, but he certainly could not have been very old as he was not of age in the fall of 1759." [Note: Born about 1740 and died in 1798 would make him about 58 at his death. RLD]
SC Archives: Date: 1770/02/06 Description: COOKE, John, Memorial for Two Tracts, One for 100 Acres on Santee and Wateree Rivers, Craven County, Summarizing a Chain of Title to a Grant to Michael McCARTNEY of Feb. 7 1767 and One for 100 Acres near Cedar Creek, Craven County, Summarizing a Chain of Title to a Grant to Joseph Martin of March 2, 1764.
John may have had additional land in Richland County. Land records for John COOK in South Carolina are difficult to interpret as there are several John COOKs and even one other Captain John COOK in the records, although most are before 1759, while our John was in Virginia. He married Martha Ann PEARSON in 1772 in Broad River, South Carolina. Martha PEARSON was a daughter of Mariner John PEARSON and his wife Mary RAIFORD. John and Martha had at least 10 children.
South Carolina Revolutionary Soldiers, Sailors Patriots & Descendants, Vol. 1, Carter-Maddox, p. 24 lists: "COOK, John (RS-Capt-VA-NC-SC)"
In the Revolutionary War, John COOK fought in South Carolina and participated in the battles of Eutaw Springs, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse (History of the Revolution in South Carolina, Salley, page 44). Bobby Gilmer Moss, in " Roster of South Carolina Patriots During the American Revolution" also quotes Sally but has him as Captain under LT. Col. Robert GOODWYN and Col. RICHARDSON in 1778.

"Military Service Revolutionary War Captain and Patriot, 2nd Regiment, SC Infantry: John COOK, patriot, during the entire Revolutionary War served as a Captain of the cavalry under Col William WASHINGTON. Because the Tories plundered and harassed the Cook family, they were forced to be refugees in the Waxhaud* Settlement of South Carolina. After the war, John COOK and his family returned to their home on Broad River South Carolina where his wife Martha PEARSON died leaving several children. John COOK then moved to Hancock County Georgia and married for a third time." Abraham GINDRAT of Craven County, South Carolina in his Will dated 19 February 1785 bequeathed "And to Cap. John COOK's Son Nathan COOK six breading [sic] Cattle and fifteen Guineas..."
In 1787 John COOK was elected to the South Carolina Legislature for two terms, serving from 1787 to 1790. In 1788, John was a representative of Fairfield County to the South Carolina Constitutional Convention. He voted against ratifying the new Constitution, a sentiment likely popular with the voters in the upcountry as they had done without any government locally, a state government that had ignored them, and an oppressive British rule. His vote is recorded in the convention records: Friday, May 23, 1788: Fairfield County. -- Nays: James CRAIG, Jacob BROWN, John GRAY, John COOK. 4. On motion, Resolved, That this Convention do assent to and ratify the Constitution agreed to on the 17th day of September last, by the Convention of the United States of America, held at Philadelphia. On the question being put to agree to the same, the yeas and nays were called for by the unanimous voice of the Convention, and are as follows: Two hundred and twenty-two representatives attended the session, with 140 voting in favor and 73 voting against. The resolution was adopted by a majority of 67 votes.
John COOK is listed in the 1790 Census of Camden Distrtict, Fairfield County, South Carolina with 4 males under 16, 7 females, and 33 slaves. His son Burrill COOK and family lived two households away.
John COOK, Sr. and John COOK, Jr. witnessed the July 4th, 1794 deed recording the purchase of 287.5 acres of land on Rock [Rocky?] Creek by Philip COOK from John Liddell DIXON.
Georgia Revolutionary Soldiers Graves, Vol. 1, page 316, by Arnold & Burnham 1993: "John COOK b. c. 1740, d. 1799.... John COOK's father was Henry COOK of Brunswick County, Virginia according to a record from the Georgia Department of Archives and History, Atlanta, GA." This record does not have a name for its originator, but does cite reference locations.
John COOK's biography appears in the Biographical Dictionary of South Carolina Representatives, Vol. 3, page 151-152: "John COOK lived near Cedar Creek in what became Fairfield County, South Carolina. CONFLICTING INFORMATION on Capt. John COOK's children:
ADDENDUM: Theophilis COOK, 1788 - 1858, is listed by some as a son of Capt. John COOK and Martha Ann PEARSON. However, George J. Ferris, gjfarris@aol.com, has placed several "Post 'em Note" rebuttals on webpages where Theophilis COOK is named as a son of Capt. John COOK and Martha Ann PEARSON:
2005-06-20 15:32:22: "The Theopholus Cook (1788 - 1858) of Jefferson County, IL was not one of the children of John Cook and Martha Pearson. He was born in GA, not SC - and the mother of Theophilus and Robert Cook as well as of the three Robertsons of Jefferson Co. was well known as Lucy (probably nee Lucinda Phillips) who was still living in that county in 1830. The erroneous claim that Theophilus was a son of Capt. John Cook was originally made as part of a DAR application (that was rejected). The person who originally made that claim acknowledged the error long ago - but it has lived on - despite the lack of any legitimate supporting evidence!"
Also, 2005-06-21 09:40:41: "I would be interested in seeing any source documentation for including Theophilus Cook (1788-1858) as a son of John Cook and Martha Pearson. This does not correlate with his records in TN and Jefferson County, IL - where his mother (Lucy) lived and was well known - and wasn't Martha Pearson. If the connection to Capt. John Cook is based on the statement by Lenna Smith in her 1960 summary, she later acknowledged, in her research notes, that it was an error and was incorrect." In the 1870 census of Pike County, Sarah JONES "Jr.", age 60 born in South Carolina, lives in the home of her daughter Parthenia, wife of Harrison WATTS. Also in the home is Sarah JONES age 80, also born in South Carolina, Parthenia's grandmother?
In a conflict of ages, the 1880 census, Clay County, Alabama, lists Sally Jones, 56, Mother-in-law, living with Harrison and "Portheny" WATTS. This appears to be the same Sarah listed as age 60 in 1870, a census age error when she was about 46-50, a more reasonable age to fit the picture presented?

"Captain Robert Hails, a planter near the Santee river in South Carolina, and an earnest supporter of Colonial forces, raised for the Revolutionary war a company of partisan rangers at his own expense, and was afterwards attached to Lee's legion. His widow lived to be ninety-four years old, and told her descendants many of the stirring events of the early days of the republic. She had a son in the War of 1812, descendants in the Seminole and Mexican wars, and many grandsons in the Confederate army. She was a zealous Confederate, and often expressed the wish that she might never live to see one of the enemy. Her wish was granted, as she died when the Federals were within four miles of Montgomery." [Notable Men of Alabama, Volume 1, Joel Campbell DuBose, p. 72]

Peter is named in the settlement of his Uncle William HURST's estate as "Peter HURST - or if dead (6.34)". It appears that Peter was one of those who "moved west" and did not stay in contact with the family or died.
Peter HURST moved to Kentucky and married Ann "Nancy" RUST in 1801. They had 15 children. Peter died 9 February 1846 and is buried in Woodford County, Kentucky.

William RAIFORD and Sarah

Born: Christened: Died: Bef 12 Jan 1762 - Camden, South Carolina 1300 Buried:

Marriage:
Wife Sarah 1300
Born: Christened: Died: Bef 17 Jun 1845 - Richland District, South Carolina 1853 Buried:
Other Spouse: Rev. Joseph REESE, RS-SC (Cir 1736-1795) 1469 - After 12 Jan 1762
Children
General Notes: Husband -
William RAIFORD's LW&T, an abstract from Green's "History of Richland County", page 211, listed under Wills relating to Richland County in the Office of Judge of Probate at Charleston, Camden, Winnsboro: "Page 132. William RAIFORD. December 1, 1761-January 12, 1762, of Broad River. Left to Joseph REES, a minor under his care, plantation of 200 acres north of Congaree, which he had bought of Edward McGRAW. John PEARSON, Felix LONG, and Sarah, his (RAIFORD's) wife, executors."
Wills in Charleston - "Inventory of William RAIFORD was made by same men in April, 1762." This reference is to Joshua EDWARDS, David FARMER, and Victor NEELY who had inventoried the estate of his father, Philip, on September 4, 1761. 953
General Notes: Wife -
Sarah is named as "my beloved wife Sarah REESE" in the LW&T of Rev. Joseph REESE, 27 April 1792.
Will abstract, Richland County Will Book L: "Page 52. Sarah REESE. May 18, 1845-June 17, 1845. Wit.: Francis A. MARSHALL, John R. BROWN, Howell EDMUNDS. Ex.: Son, Jesse REESE. Dau.: Sarah H. (m. HOWELL), Ann E. (m. ADAMS), Mary M. REESE. Granddaughter: Mary R. GARNER." (Green, "History of Richland County, p. 321)
QUESTION? Who are the daughters Sarah H., Ann E. and Mary M., not mentioned in the Will of Rev. Joseph REESE, from previous marriage? Was Sarah the mother of Joseph's son's Jesse and John Altom. The above abstract may conflict with the will of Joseph REESE showing his daughter Ann married to TUCKER. If she was the Ann married to Robert TUCKER, she was his widow in 1816 in Washington County, Georgia, who died in 1846, Baldwin County,Georgia.

CONFLICT! Contrary to published information saying that Rev. Joseph REESE's father was Evan and Sarah REES, Harriet Imrey contradicts it saying that Daniel and Mary REESE are his parents. Her explanation of this is in my general notes on Daniel REESE. Interestingly, Joseph has a son Daniel, but no son named Evan? (RLD)
"This Joseph Rees was Rev. Joseph Rees s/o Evan and Sarah Rees. He was born in Kent Co. PA (now DE, the 3 counties of DE were then known as the "three lower counties" of Pennsylvania). His first wife was Ann Reynolds (probably mother of Ephriam as he was the oldest child). Spouses of children, where I know them: Mary: Hargrave Arthur; Joseph: Sarah Howell; Timothy: Elizabeth Howell; Ann: Robert Tucker; John Altum: Mary Howell; Catherine: ____ Wells
In 1759, Joseph was a member of the Fairforest Baptist Church Richland Co. SC. He was the first pastor of the Congaree Baptist Church. He lived 3 miles away near Pincushion Swamp. His plantation "Permacrusian" was located across the river in Richland. The Howell family the 3 sons married into was related to the wife of Jefferson Davis, whose maiden name was Howell. There is info on his ministry in "South Carolina Baptists 1670-1805" by Leah Townsend. Originally published in 1935, it was reprinted by the Gen. Pub. Co. Baltimore. The Charleston Association referred to him as "eminently pious, excellent and useful". (An epitaph of which anyone would be proud.) I do not descend from Joseph, but from Hugh Rees who was in SC with 4 brothers by 1770.
The only clue I have to Sarah's prior husbands is that apparently her last one was named Altum/Altom (from your info, I presume Altom is correct, particularly as I had the son as John Alton, which obviously should be Altom). I have identified the sons-in-law named in the will. No clue on the Raiford who was a witness, but as I said in my original posting, Joseph D. Rees III had a daughter Mary Raiford Rees who married a Garner, so it seems likely he or his father married a Raiford." (Dave Reese,http://genforum.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?carolina::reese::1179.html)
Rev. Joseph REESE served as a chaplin in the Revolutionary War with forces from the Congaree. (Green. "History of Richland County", page 102.) He may have been the third husband of Sarah, his second wife.
The will of Rev. Joseph REESE is filed in Probate Court, Columbia, South Carolina (will book C--Folios 107,108,109) was recorded April 6, 1795; lists wife Sarah (THOMAS) REESE and nine children by his first wife. Rev. REESE died on March 5, 1795 at the age of sixty-three, in Richland County, South Carolina, at his home. He was interred in the family cemetery on his estate, Pincushion (Pennocrucion), about 12 miles east of Columbia, South Carolina, on the Garner Ferry Road. In 1940 this place was owned by Mr. Rawles.

Notes: Marriage
12 Jan 1762 is the date Sarah's Husband, William RAIFORD's Will was proven in court.

A note to the abstract of Arthur's brother, William in Green's "History of Richland County" states that Arthur had six children. Four are known to this compiler; a 5th, Arthur, Jr., was added per Carol Busto's information.
The 1792 Will of Arthur HOWELL (Jr.) names his brother William and is witnessed by Robert and John HOWELL and Wm. MEYER. In it, Arthur (Jr.) names Joseph DANIELL as an executor and as a cousin. This Joseph is possibly "Jose DANIELL", son of James DANIELL of Fairfield County, South Carolina.

George EILAND was a son of Richard EILAND and Elizabeth HEATH of Princess Anne County, Province of Virginia. The surname EILAND is found in many different spellings.
George is first found in the 7 March 1733 Will of his father: "... after decase [decease] of my beloved wife Elizabeth ILANDS ye whole track of land which I nowe live one [on] with all ye rest of my persernell Estate yt [that] shall then remain it is [my] last will and Testment yt [that] my well beloved sone Gorge [sic] ILANDS shall Injoye ye whole and it is my disier yt [that] my deare wife as long as my pore sick sone Richard ILANDS liveth yt [that] she shall maintain and keepe him as long as he lives and after ye Death of my dear wife my sone George ILANDS which will be heir to my Estate after ye death of my dear wife for him to take care and doe ye like whise if my son Richard Remain and continue alive..."
The Watkins Family History Society provides these dates for George and Sarah EILAND: George Eiland was born 1700.
His wife Sarah was born 1717. They were married in 1735. [http://www.watkinsfhs.net/cgi-bin/igm2/igmget.cgi/n=csharp?I42]
George EILAND married Sarah before 1745 when she is named in the sale of land in Princess Anne County. George claimed a wife and four children in his petition for land in South Carolina on 3 October 1749, indicating all born before that date. "R. Francis Carroll (whose grandmother was Elizabeth Eiland, a direct descendant of Absalom) [wrote] that the "children in order of birth" were" Absalom was the eldest, John, Isaiah, and James." [Barbara Hunt, Silver City, New Mexico, 26 July 2009.] By deduction, Absalom was then born about 1740 and James about 1749.
Virginia and North Carolina records for George EILAND:
"He [James SIMMONS] was underage in 1718 and in North Carolina on 21 Mar 1749. It may be though that he migrated from Princess Ann Co., VA to NC about 1740/41. James Simmons and George Eiland, son of Richard Eiland, also of the Blackwater area in Princess Anne Co., VA petitioned for and received land grants at Edenton [Chowan County] on 12 Mar 1740/41 (copy in file). Several other families from around Blackwater later moved to the same area where James Simmons settled. For whatever reason, it appears that James' wife, Providence and son James did not go to NC with him." [Descendants of James Simmons / Symonds, http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/n/e/Herman-W-Snell/GENE5-0004.html
George's move from his father's land in Currituck Precinct, North Carolina and Princess Anne County, Virginia began about 1743 with his purchase of land in Craven County and was likely completed by the sale of 300 acres in Princess Anne County in 1745, indicating that his mother, who had a life estate on the land, had died before the sale. His "pore sick" brother Richard may also have died relieving George of responsibility for him as well.

A chain of South Carolina records chronologically follows George's disposing of his land in North Carolina and his migration to South Carolina. George EILAND is in South Carolina records from July 1749 until at least 1775 when he gives a lease and release of property to his son Absalom.
George EILAND petitioned for a grant of 350 acres to the South Carolina Council on 3 Oct 1749. In it, he states that he "arrived three months ago to settle with his family, in which for 350 acres for himself, wife, 4 children, in which with himself, are six, that is to say six whites and one black." The grant was for 350 acres on the North side of the Santee River, bounded North adjacent John BOWLES near Butler Creek. [SC Council Journal, vol. 17, p. 638]. [Compilations by Mrs. Quane Fletcher, received from Jere Fletcher, sent by Barbara Hunt of Silver City, New Mexico]
In another petition five years later, George claims himself and three children. ["Between 1749 and 1754, Sarah had left George, taking baby James with her. George kept Absalom, John, and Isaiah." [Barbara Hunt, Silver Lake, New Mexico]
On 5 May 1754, George EILAND petitioned the South Carolina Council in which he set forth that "petitioner is possessed of a tract near Congree [sic], on which he hath built a house and made considerable improvements, and was every day determined to come down to prove family right, but on account of poverty and want of money to go through the offices, he hath delayed until now to make application to Your Excell. and Honors, but in the mean time the said land he lives upon has been run out by Jacob SUMMERALL, by virtue of a receipt he obtained for said surveying, but as the taking away the said improved land would be an utter ruin to your petitioner, and family, he humbly prays Your Excell. and Honors that as he hath three children and himself, for whom not any land has been assigned, that you would be pleased to order thee Surv. Gen. to lay out to the petitioner 200 acres of land on the tract which he hath improved and lives on." The Council rejected this petition. Two days later, George again petitioned the Council, this time to prolong his warrant for 350 acres on the Santee, dated 4 October 1749, and that his land be near water of the Savannah River. This petition was granted and the warrant prolonged for six months from present date, 7 May 1754. George EILAND received a land grant in Granville County, South Carolina on 5 May 1754. [SC Council Journal, vol. 23, p. 230] [Compilations by Mrs. Quane Fletcher, received from Jere Fletcher, sent by Barbara Hunt of Silver City, New Mexico]

The location of the fork of Cedar Creek and Nobles Creek is 10.5 miles SW of the arbitrary center of Edgefield, South Carolina as determined from the current SC Department of Transportation Map as the intersection of SC State Roads 23 and 34.]
[Location of Nobles Creek: Nobles Creek was later called Horns Creek. At http://gennotes.150m.com/harvey.html a "Map of Edgefield County, SC 1785-1871" shows "Horn Cr (formerly Nobles) as a tributary of Stevens Creek and a Cedar Cr., a little west of Edgefield Town, joining with Rock Cr. and Lick Fork as its tributaries. Stevens Creek is a tributary of the Savannah River. This location places the George EILAND family in proximity of lands later owned by James DANIELL of Fairfield and/or his nephew, William DANIEL of Edgefield.
This was a regranting of the above 350 acres:

In 1770, George's son Absalom EILAND obtained a land grant in St. John's Parish, South Carolina. Effective in 1767[?], headright grants of 100 acres could be given to anyone aged 18 or over. A grant of 100 acres no longer implied that a person was married or had a second person with them.

George retained ownership of his 350 acres in the fork of Nobles (Horns) Creek and Cedar Creek because he apparently did not vacate the land and William NICHOLS failed to record the sale. His continuing presence is shown by this record:

[Compilations by Mrs. Quane Fletcher, received from Jere Fletcher, sent by Barbara Hunt of Silver City, New Mexico] [*Who was Abner EILAND? It has been said that "Abner" was Absalom.]
"Absalom sold this land to John RAINSFORD of 96 District SC, according to R. Francis Carroll. Recorded 21 April 1775 after they tracked down Jacob SIMS in St Matthew's Parish GA and proved above deed. An Abner EILAND was one of the witnesses. Today St. David's Parish is Glynn Co., GA. This is the last time R. Francis Carroll found record of George. So George died sometime after 1774. R. Francis Carroll suggests William NICHOLS and John RAINSFORD may have been relatives of George EILAND." [Barbara Hunt] [No proof of a NICHOLS or RAINSFORD relationship has been offered. RLD]
George is said to have died in 1776 in Oglethorpe County, Georgia or St. David's Parish, Georgia, but supporting documentation is not yet found. [Note: a St. David's Parish, South Carolina "covered the exact same area as Cheraw District, the counties of Darlington, Chesterfield, and Marlboro." Saint David's Parish was created from Saint Mark's Parish in 1768. [Formation of South Carolina Counties]
This 1783 record is a testimony concerning the 1756-57 lease and release above, and was apparently recorded after George EILAND's death.

In summary, William NICHOLS explains to Justice William Jones, 96 District, why the lease and release of the 350 acres on Cedar Creek and Nobles Creek he purchased from George EILAND "about 27 or 28 years ago" was never recorded and the titles were lost. William's failure to record the titles forfeited his claim to the land and invalidated his attempted sale of it to Thomas GREEN of Charleston. The affidavit is sworn to and dated 26 October 1821, recorded 11 February 1784.

McAllister's Hardwick Mounted Rifles. The men were recruited in Augusta and Hardwick [Ga] and the counties of Miller, Randolph, Banks, and Wayne. Ordered to Virginia, the regiment was placed in P. M. B. Young's and Gary's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It participated in The Wilderness Campaign and later the battles about Cold Harbor and conflicts south of the James River. Sent to Georgia, the 7th Cavalry was dismounted and with 200 men took part in the defense of Savannah. It returned to Virginia and continued the fight around Petersburg and Appomattox. The unit surrendered 3 officers and 39 men. Colonel William P. White, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph L. McAllister, and Majors Edward C. Anderson, Jr. and John N. Davies were in command. Colonel John GUNNELL and Sarah Ann

Marriage:

Born: Abt 1799 - Virginia 1873 Christened: Died: Bef 1 Jun 1870 128 Buried:

General Notes: Husband -
"John GUNNELL inherited a part of William GUNNELL III's plantation known as Hidden Springs. Here he enlarged a small existing timber-framed house. He was farming large tracts of land at this time and was listed on the Slave Schedule as owning twenty-two slaves\emdash a very great number for this area. Like his father and other men in the family, he followed a tradition of public service. He was recommended for lieutenant in the 60th Regiment of Virginia Militia in 1816, and by his death in 1874, he had risen to the rank of colonel. He also served as a road surveyor, a magistrate, was a member of the School Commission from 1837 to 1845, sheriff from 1847 to 1850, and justice for Fairfax County from 1835 to 1856.7...
This land on which the John Gunnell House was built was once part of the 12,588-acre Great Falls Manor of Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax. Early settlers grew tobacco transported by rolling road to the tobacco houses at the Ports of Georgetown and Alexandria. In the second half of the eighteenth century, farmers on this isolated, up-country land leased small parcels of 100 to 200 acres from Bryan Fairfax, who would be Thomas's heir. Practicing agrarian reform, Bryan required each farmer to build a 16 foot x 16 foot or a 16 foot x 20 foot log house and plant orchards and a crop other than tobacco or corn. The latter were forbidden because of the devastating effect they had had on the fertility of the farm land to the south. In 1791, William Gunnell III and his wife Sara Coleman bought 676 acres of land from Bryan Fairfax, adding it to 450 acres bought from John Harle in 1785. This parcel became the center of a large, self-sufficient plantation of more than 1,000 acres, including more than forty slaves. Fruit, wheat, rye, tobacco, corn, and flax were grown here. At his death in 1820, the house and 159 acres went first to William's daughter Ann; and then, at her untimely death, to his son George. In 1842 the property was sold on the courthouse steps to Charles Binn who advocated the use of limestone to restore land impoverished by corn and tobacco crops. In 1844 Binn sold the property to William Gunnell III's nephew, George W. Gunnell. His advertisement of the sale in the Alexandria Gazette, April 27,1844, gives a good description of farming here:
There are 15 or 20 acres of prime meadow ground. On it is a large frame HOUSE
containing six rooms…also Kitchen, Stable, Corn-house, Meat house and Dairy.
In the Orchard and adjoining fields there are 289 Trees of choice Apples, 100 of
Peaches of different kinds, Quinces, Pears, Plums, & every variety of Cherries.
From the sale of fruit in the markets of the District of Columbia, the subscriber
has made more than 12 per cent on the price he is willing to take for the land.
There are never failing streams and springs of fine water in each of the 5 fields.
Binn also referred to livestock, including horses, cows, sheep, and hogs. Since he owned the property for only two years, this description must be of the farm Gunnell had developed, and his sons, George and John, continued. Until recently, there was a barn at Gunnell's Run which was typical of early-nineteenth-century barns in this area. It was timber-framed with pegged mortise and-tenon joinery, tall windows, and a central entrance through the longitudinal sides. There was a similar barn on the property where the John Gunnell house was built. A 1950s oil painting by Nancy Stevenson shows the barn with additions. It may have been part of William Gunnell III's plantation, servicing farming activities on this parcel. Clearly very old and in very bad condition in the 1950s, it was subsequently demolished.
After the division of William Gunnell III's estate, only John and George remained farming the land. One sister died, the others married and moved away. The other two brothers chose medicine rather than farming as a career. Various parcels were sold out of the family. The large number of slaves\emdash greater than the land could support\emdash became a problem. George spent some years in Mississippi leasing the slaves. This extended absence contributed to his eventual bankruptcy and loss of the William Gunnell III home place. George died in 1850 with John acting as executor. John was listed in the 1859 Fairfax County personal property tax records as having one male over sixteen (probably George Coleman), five slaves over sixteen, eight slaves over twelve, seven horses or mules valued at $350.00, twenty-five cattle or sheep valued at $300.00, two carriages or wagons valued at $300.00, 2 watches valued at $200.00, 2 clocks valued at $10.00, all gold & silver plate valued at $900.00, all household & kitchen furniture valued at $1,200.00, and cash on hand $750.00. By local standards he was very wealthy. In 1862, his horses were reduced to five, his cattle to seventeen, and his cash to $700.00. There were no slaves and no sheep or hogs. His other personal property remained more or less the same. In spite of heavy foraging by both armies in this area, John Gunnell remained a wealthy man. Coleman had been arrested and imprisoned briefly in the District of Columbia as a southern sympathizer. John, described by General McCall as "a noted leader of the oppressors of Union Men, and agent for the secessionist army" eluded arrest.12 In the U. S. Census of 1870, John Gunnell was listed as a farmer, with real estate valued at $12,500.00 and personal property valued at $1,000.00. Seventy-seven years old, he lived with his neighbor, James O. Tucker. At his death in 1874, his estate inventory catalogs the kind of tools and equipment used by a farmer here at that time. It includes unusual items such as a road scraper, mill stones, and grain fan and lists the often elegant household furnishings room by room. 13." During the War Between the States, John suffered, as did the rest of the family, for his Southern sympathies. He is listed as one of the men who voted in favor of the Ordinance of Secession.
John survived the war. In 1870 he resides in the household of James O. TUCKER and family, next door neighbors of George G. COLEMAN, John's nephew by his sister Sarah GUNNELL.

Letter of 1908 tells of Thomas family
Moving to Missouri in 1858
Edited by Helen L. Smith A letter sent to us by a Thomas family descendant, dated 1908, gives us some insights into the Thomas family's removal from Lewis County to Missouri in 1868. The family eventually settled in Western Missouri and, at the time of this letter, had experienced the terrible disasters of the Border Wars and attacks of the Jayhawkers. The letter was sent to us by Gary L. Cain, of Sandy, Utah, along with some other Thomas papers. They were placed in the hands of Mrs. Helen L. Smith with instructions to contribute them to the newly restored home of Judge George Morgan Thomas and his wife, Catherine Willim Thomas, located on the corner of Railroad and Main Streets, Vanceburg. In a recent telephone conversation with Mr. Cain, Helen Smith says that Mr. Cain feels these documents will have a more relevant placement at the old Thomas home. The old Thomas home will be dedicated October 28, 2006. The item we are reproducing here today is a letter sent to George Morgan Thomas (GMT) in 1908 by Charles W. Thomas who was living in Woodland, California. The above Charles was the son of George W. Thomas (born 1822) and was a first cousin to GMT and was writing to inform GMT about their (western) branch of the Thomas family. GMT would have been 80 years old when he received the letter. Charles would have been around 60 years old, according to some dates in the letter -- he said he left Kentucky in 1858 when he was nine years old.
Traveling to the West
Woodland, Calif.
Dec. 9, 1908
Hon. Geo. M. Thomas
My Dear Cousin,
I hope you won't think I intend to impose on you a correspondence or burden you with family detail. I am charged with what is known among us in the Thomas family that of being a very poor correspondent. While looking over some old papers and records I came upon some almost forgotten data and thinking it might be of some small interest to you, I write about them now. If not now it may never be done.
We have in our library an old volume of biographies of the Revolution, one belonging to my grandfather McCormick, two volumes of Dr. Dick's works belonging to my Uncle Dan Thomas, a complete work of Byron belonging to W.W. Hitty whom we call cousin Willis Hitt -- what relation I never knew or don't remember now. I have many things which I may note later in this letter.
You will recall that my Father and family and uncle Dan Thomas came to Missouri about or in 1858. Ed Falls drove one of the wagons. I remember or, at least I think I do, that we visited Aunt Nancy Hammond at some place after we crossed the Ohio. I am almost sure we crossed at Cincinnati. I recall crossing [that] we had two wagons and one riding horse and I had with me my own bulldog that was nine years old -- the same age that I was. My bulldog, Old Tom, walked all the way from Kentucky to western Missouri, and he was my constant companion there and long after the war. He lived to the [18]70s and died while I was in college, but this is a history nearer to my boyhood heart -- not to be recorded here.
We made or migrated all the way in wagons and visited also my Aunt and Uncle Joe Gill in eastern Missouri. As I remember, my father and Uncle Dan had the year before visited Missouri and selected our home. The home was of blessed memory. My mother, brothers, and sisters lived at grandfather McCormick's while they were absent. I remember many things in Kentucky and much of our wild far away home in Missouri. [I remember] how we struggled and suffered far beyond the reach of those things which afford comfort, contentment, pleasure, and happiness in civilization. "Westward Ho" is good in songs, but there lurks in it privation, sorrowing, and suffering, and yet I cast mine on the Pacific coast. But this is not what I want to write about.
My father returned to Kentucky and brought with him a copy of the old family Bible record written old style script on blue paper. During the war I made a copy of this for Aunt Amandy Montgomery. The original I could not find when I was home. Last year I wrote to Aunt Lizzie Montgomery and find she has the copy I made and here it is:
Births of the Thomas Family:
George Thomas was born January 4, 1779
Larmia (Levina) Schull Thomas December 6, 1778
Sarah Thomas March 15, 1802
Eligh (Elijah) F. Thomas March 30, 1804
Rachel Thomas April 13, 1806
Sydnay (Sydney) Thomas August 29, 1808
Nancy Thomas December 1810
Mary Ann Thomas May 1813 (?)
------ name and date not readable
Amenda (Amanda) Melvina Thomas September 17, 1817
Daniel Wm. Thomas February (no date)
George W. Thomas February 15, 1822 (That's my father's name. It is not on the list. I take it from my own records.)
Elizabeth Jane Thomas February 5, 1828
This is a literal copy except the word born begins each time with a capital letter. You give your father's name as Eligan. Here it is given Eligah (Elijah) Post (?) and in a description of a [land] patent of our Grandmother which I have, it is given as Eliga. I note you give the birth date of Aunt Mary as February 23, 1815. This must be an error as the copy gives it as May (March) 11, 1813 which I take to be more nearly correct if the other birth dates of other children given by you [GMT] and as recorded in this copy are correct. This makes Aunt Mary Wilson 96 years old next March -- good old age indeed.
I have the legend or truth all the same meaning facts in family history taken from a memorandum I made in 1878. This old record was gathered from talks with your father [Elijah] and Uncle Dan, Aunt Amanda, my father [George W.] and others. This [is] but an abstract. Sarah Hart or Hardt came from Rotterdam to Virginia and married Mickeral [Michael] Thomas -- his third wife. Of this marriage was George Thomas (1770-1834), our grandfather, who was born in 1771 (evidently an error of date). George Thomas married Lavina Scholl [Schall or Schull]. Our grandmother Lavina Scholl [Thomas] was born in Kentucky. Her mother was Sarah (Clemens) Schull. Clemens, as a girl or young woman, came to Kentucky from North Carolina with a Daniel Boone party and lived for a time at Boonesborough. [Her] first husband died and she married a Hammond. The Schull family came from Virginia near Washington, D.C. One branch of the family went to North Carolina. What do you think [about] that? Did our Grandfather or great-grandfather ever live in Pennsylvania or near Wheeling, West Virginia? The Thomas family or near (?) England (Joseph Thomas, the story says) came from England, Wales originally. [This sentence needs unscrambling. It seems that Mr. Thomas is asking if the family ever lived in Pennsylvania or near Wheeling, West Virginia. Did the Thomas family come from England, or Wales, originally? Joseph Thomas, the story says came from England, Wales originally.]
I remember Uncle Dan's fine penmanship. He was our schoolteacher for a while. We often spoke of the Thomas handwriting -- not that it was fine but characteristic. Our Missouri home was known as the Kentucky settlement. I have been spelling Kentucky as Kentuckey as the old sons of the state pronounce it. I feel kin to it very much. There live the Goodens, the Tshernes [Terhunes ?], Hitts, Markenels [Markwells ?], Jones, Aunty Mary McCormick Montgomery, Aunt Mandy Thomas Carnes, Miss Marlons, Bradys, Thomas and others. All fine families.
I know Uncle Dan's cousin Wils Hitt and my father [George] owned many good books -- all destroyed except the few I have -- a tribute to an unholy, ungodly and barbarous border war, not civil war. Being a lover of books I preserved the few I have, why or how I don't know how. Human life was the cheapest asset we possessed.
The Jayhawkers over run us, flogged, burned, and murdered without restraint. Many a night have I, a mere lad, been roused from my bed to go to [or] from neighbor to neighbor to warn them of the coming of the murderers. I know what it is to have one hanged until unconscious to compel me to disclose some secret I may or may not have possessed which I never told [if] I did have. The women and the boys did all the business for months and months -- the men remained in hiding. I have more than once slipped far to the woods as a messenger if trouble came or to fight if necessary.
Time and time again have I alone gone through fields and dark forests at night on some mission of duty or mercy. For some reason which I never questioned I was the one boy selected and known for this work for the whole settlement and at times for other neighborhoods.
I recall [with] the vividness of yesterday that one winter night I was called to conduct (to me) a beautiful young woman some ten miles to other friends along the line of escape who (the young woman) had shot to death her sweetheart who with others were raiding her father's home with evil and death dealing intent -- 20 or 21.
There was not sentiment romance in all this to me; it was stern unflinching duty. Uncle Dan may have told you of the murder of John Markwell. Uncle Dan was with him when he was shot by the same band of thieves and murderers. Mr. Markwell was a large man weighing over 300 pounds. My mother and two other women and myself with an ox team went some six miles for the body was loaded on the wagon and brought home the next night by some means or other. The usual mysterious means the rumor came that they intended to kill Uncle Dan and remove all evidence of the killing. The settlement was alarmed and all preparations were made to protect his life. He was living with us and it was surmised correctly that they would come to our house first. Uncle Dan was sent into hiding and finally sent to Aunt Mary Jones. Some preparation was made for their coming. My mother and I kept watch at the front window. My father remained in the kitchen to escape at once -- he could [not] be persuaded to go before because he would remain inside close to the family. It was in mid winter with a heavy snow on the ground as I remember it now. I know it was very cold, near midnight they came and demanded both Uncle Dan and my Father. My mother faced them at an open front window determined to kill. She struck a match and recognized to them that and the noise of cocking her revolver frightened them and they withdrew hastily to the side of the house. Just then my Father left the kitchen door making some noise. One shot was fired in his direction. My mother and I at once left the [house] to search for him. The Jayhawkers hastily mounted their horses standing in the yard and left. Call a man's home his castle or any other name, I presume when attacked he prepares to kill without thought of consequences. I know this is the first time in my life I made up my mind to take a human life. My mother and I both armed started to find my father and whither found or not to go by a short path to cut off these outlaws (tolerate it is me) at a cut bank which they must pass and kill as many as we could. We found Father who was in his sock feet and who had run into one foot a corn stock (stalk) and could hardly walk. He wisely persuaded us to go no further for had we killed one of them the whole family would have been wiped out.
I have among my memory treasures a commonwealth [land] patent to our grandmother, Lorona [Lavina] Thomas for 50 acres on the waters of Salt Lick adjoining land owned by your father and mine, dated May 7, 1838, signed by James Clark, Governor, and John Bollock, secretary of state. Also a church letter to Uncle Dan from the Christian Church of Salt Lick Creek near Esculapia Springs dated April 6, 1856, and signed Daniel P. Mosley, elder and George T. Thomas, elder. The letter shows that Uncle Dan was a deacon; also a tax receipt 1847 Larvna [Lavina] Thomas $1,360 taxable property, signed by W.L. Halbert for R.D. McLane & Co., also a receipt Feb. 6, 1857, to my father for $600 for a judgment paid for Uncle Henry McCormick signed by Geo. T. Halbert, clerk. This one of a long history of my poor father's [George W. Thomas] generosity. And I have an old money pocket large leather pocket books once belonged either to our Grandfather or Grandmother [George and Lavina Thomas]. Its condition and construction show its age. I have many other things which have and do now interest me very much.
I remember cousin May Halbert lives near you and is still May Halbert. Tell her it is not fair but I am often teased because they say that most of my lady friends are old maids. I should be glad indeed to see her. I wish you would give my love to her. Aunt May Jones like[s] so much to have her recollection detailed. Could she be induced to relate them to someone? I would consider it a great favor if she would and send me a copy. If any member of the family will give me a record of the names, dates of birth, marriages, husbands, wives, and children down to the end, I will, with the data have, compiled a record of the Thomas family and send to each a copy. I would like to know the names of the husbands of each of our aunts. I don't know the wives of Uncle Lige [Elijah] and Dan, a record of his character might be of some value or interest to our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
I was about six years old when I left Kentucky. My brothers, James, Milton, George, Henry, Robert, Wilson and my only sister, Mary Laurina [Lavina?] were born in Kentucky. I remember or think I remember that Aunt Halbert had two girls. I recall that I was at Aunt Mary Wilson's and it seems to me that it was near the Ohio River and I saw a steamboat boiler half buried in the ground standing at quite an angle which they told me came from a steamboat explosion, a miracle if true. I remember many minor things about our old home. It appears to me the house stood in or on the side hill with trees above. The porch opened on the ground from the second story. There was rock or shell slate on the hill that the stable and yard was below toward down stream. There was a big corn crib that jimson weed grew in the barnyard. I remember the graveyard on a hill where or which way I don't know. I recall a little country store below our house and Grandfather McCormick. The name of he who kept it I don't or can't think just now. I think they said he was a Yankee. I remember there was a tanyard near Grandfather's that Uncle Henry kept a store in the corner of the hotel yard that one time many men came to Grandfather's Hotel with many dogs. I remember how the Hotel looked -- the wide yard in front down to the road. The schoolhouse near the creek not far away for one day Tom and I ran away to go to school. He was wiser than I and he helped me across the creek on a board or log. He walked across first and then came back as I couldn't cross. Enough.
This letter must end somewhere and it may as well end here. If you will show this to Aunt Mary, to the Halberts, cousins, and to any other member of the family whom you think might be interested in such things. Any of them who cares to write to me and will do so the debt and pleasure will be mine. And I will appreciate it. I have a weakness for the tribe of Thomas down the entire line. I have here outdone myself and may never be able to brace myself to such another effort to my dear wife have I written such a length. We have a nice little home, a house of many rooms occupied just now by myself and wife alone. The oranges and lemons hang on the trees, ripe and beautiful. The flowers bloom in the dooryard. Come to see us; we will be glad to entertain you. Pardon the length of this letter.
I am your cousin,
Charles W. Thomas
P.S. Thinking of what I intended and haven't said in the foregoing letter, I cannot refrain a p.s. I don't want you to think I am a pedigree hunter for I am not. I have not pitched the family wagon to a star, nor am I adverse with the idea of proving myself kin to the whole world through the Garden of Eden. It is said that we Americans are descendants or kings and Beggars, but I am not searching for either Kings or Beggars. I shall never be other than loyal to the household whoever and wherever its members are. Mr. Stitt whose children reside in this county and who recently died at Vancvill [Vacaville ] has often mentioned you. He has many nice and complimentary things to say about you. Your and he were in the Kentucky Legislature at the same time. He had a very high regard for you.
As others may see this letter, permit me (to write about) my own family or branches beginning with my all dearest brother. James Milton Thomas died Fort Worth, Texas. His wife and children live there. His children are William, Lee (deceased), and Charles W. who has children -- names unknown to me. Brother James was a farmer, George Henry Thomas was a machinist; he lives with sister Mary at Forest Grove, Oregon. His children are Dorothy (a graduate of Kirksville, Mo., Normal School -- now a teacher in the Lebanon Co. High School. Fannie, wife of Ernest Stout -- one child Charlotte. C. Harriett Billar has children living at Hutchinson, Kansas. Charles W. Thomas -- my wife was Saralda (?) whose grandfather on her father's side was a Lee from Virginia and her other was a Wilson from Kentucky. We have two children as before stated. Herbert Wilson Thomas lives at St. Joseph, Missouri, is a veterinarian surgeon, dealer in stock, has exhibited in Kentucky near you. He has two children Pearl and Larry. Launa Boyd lives at Forest Grove and has six children: Clarence Susie (married), Dorothy, George, Edna and Ruby. Matt Bruce Thomas is a farmer and lived around Mount City, Missouri. He has three children: Grace (married), Pearl, and Blair. I.P. Thomas is a farmer and lives near Forest City, Missouri and has five children: Mary, Joe, Fred and Dorothy Helen. Two brothers and a sister died in infancy. I think I have some photographs of my children which if I find them I will send to you. I am passed (past) page 13 so I will close.
Yours & C (Cousin),
Charles W. Thomas
Notes by William Talley: The above document was copied from a handwritten copy by Mrs. Helen L. Smith and some of it has been difficult to decipher; therefore, in some cases we have tried to write what we think would have been the logical wording.
The Thomas family would have been very brave to leave Kentucky in 1858 (before the Civil War started), later finding themselves helplessly and innocently caught up in a border war in conflicts with the Jayhawkers of Missouri and Kansas. Many of the brutal conflicts mentioned in this letter took place in the Missouri counties that lay near the border with the state of Kansas, namely Clay, Cass, Jackson, Bates, Platte and Buchanan.
Dr. Talley's "Lewis County History" appears in every issue of the Lewis County Herald.
((http://www.lewiscountyherald.com/talley.htm, from "a letter sent to George Morgan Thomas (GMT) in 1908 by Charles W. Thomas who was living in Woodland, California. The above Charles was the son of George W. Thomas (born 1822) and was a first cousin to GMT and was writing to inform GMT about their (western) branch of the Thomas family. GMT would have been 80 years old when he received the letter. Charles would have been around 60 years old, according to some dates in the letter -- he said he left Kentucky in 1858 when he was nine years old" provided to the Lewis County Herald by Gary L. Cain, of Sandy, Utah)
