Artemus Briggs WATSON was born 16 Dec 1846, son of James Daniel WATSON and Angelina WANNAMAKER.
1870 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Edgefield County, Saluda Division, Ridge Springs, 1 June 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 1495 Page: 362: 1383 1394 WATSON Artimus 22 M W Farmer 4000 1500 SC; -- Angelina 18 F W Keeping house SC; BROOKS, Brown 16 M W Farm Laborer. Amanda BATES is recorded as Artemas's second wife, likely married soon after Angelina's death in April 1883. If Artemas and Amanda had children, they are not recorded in the census of 1900 and may have died young. The 1910 census shows Artemus and Amelia W. married for 25 years which would mean married about 1885. If true, then Amanda is presumed to have died by 1885, less than 2 years after her marriage to Artemus, possibly a result of childbirth.
Amelia WIGHTMAN is Artemas' wife in the 1900 census, married about 1885, their first child recorded as son "Whitman" born in October 1892. 1900 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Marion County, Reese, 1 June 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 1535 Page: 316: 32 33 WATSON A. She is most likely his third wife and has had four children, three living. There is a 15 year gap in the ages of Artemus' children by his first wife, from the last child in the censuses born 1877, and this wife, first known child born in 1892.
1910 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Bamberg County, Three Mile Twp, 15 Apr 1910; Series: T624 Roll: 1448 Page: 72: Main Street -- 17 18 WATSON, A. "June 22, 1871 Atlanta Constitution
Mrs. Henrietta Whitaker
Was a daughter of Col. Van Leonard, of Columbus. She was born near Madison, Ga., September 9th, 1827. Very early in her childhood her father moved to Columbus, and there she spent all her youthful days. In 1845, when she was just eighteen years old she joined the Methodist Church, and from that day to her death she did truly "cleave unto God with full purpose of heart."
In 1852 she was married to Mr. Samuel E. Whitaker, of Baldwin county. For nineteen years she has lived among us an earnest, gentle, devoted Christian. She died in Milledgeville May 23, 1871, in joyful hope and perfect peace, leaving three daughters-the oldest twelve years-the youngest five years old. She suffered fearfully for two months, but she died so easy that she seemed to "fall asleep in Jesus." Days before her death her incoherent talk was altogether about Heaven. Her last articulate words were " Heaven-more!" And we all believe her, for we had seen her path shine more and more unto the perfect day; and the last faint glimmer that reached us across the waters was the brightest of all. We felt perfectly assured that Heaven was hers/
The chiefest of all her virtues was her utter unselfishness-her perfect devotion to the good of others. She beautifully exemplified the genius and spirit of Christianity. Its steady light suffered no diminution as reflected in her heart and life. how stirringly did she remind us of him who lived for others-suffered for others-died for others! We could not doubt she had her Master's spirit we knew that same mind was in her which was in Christ Jesus the Lord. Many other virtues did she illustrate of rare beauty and excellence, but none more lovely-none more Christ like than this. Indeed this one thing like the speech of Simon Peter, betrayed her. All were ready to say,"surely thou also art one of then," They took knowledge of her that she had been with Jesus.
Her love to children-her care for children-her ceaseless, unwearied efforts to do them good became a ruling passion in her soul. She was one of those who brought young children to Christ that he might bless them. He did bless both them and her.
Her charity had that rare excellence of "thinking no evil" - but hoping all things believing all things, enduring all things."
Her kindness to the poor brought on her the blessings of many that were ready to perish; many of them still mourn for her as children mourn for a mother. She has gone now to learn for the first time that she did all this to her loving Lord.
An almost Eastern hospitality-surely a scriptural hospitality-made her house the welcome home of the Minister, the stranger, the wayfaring man. An excellence this almost forgotten among you. But a glance shows us that all these graces spring from one: The entire consecration of soul and body to the glory of God and the good of men. Such as one will God honor and honor forever. A. J. Jarrell, Pastor "

In the 1840 census, Henry WHITE's family in York County, South Carolina was two houses from Artemisia "Mesiah" DANIEL whose son William B. DANIEL married Henry's widow, Elizabeth WILEY, after 1850. On the other side of Henry, and next door, was William WILEY, Jr. and then William WILEY, Sr. Elizabeth's family? Henry's household included: two males under 5, one male 15-20, and one male 20-30; 2 females under 5 and a female 30-40. (Series: M704 Roll: 516 Page: 319)
General Notes: Wife -
"The daughter of a planter, Elizabeth Wylie grew up in well to do circumstances. She and her first husband had seven children, the last of whom was born the year his father died. Both of her parents were dead, and she also lost one of her brothers that year. It must have been a terrible time in her life. [See Wylie Excursus]
It would be interesting to know how Elizabeth Wylie White and William B. Daniel came to be married, especially since he was 16 years her junior. He was only five years older than her oldest son. Was it a marriage of convenience? Speculation aside, they had three children of their own and their marriage lasted for 45 years." (Jerri Hall)

Thomas WHITE may be related to the family of William B. DANIEL who married Elizabeth WYLIE, widow of Henry Fuller WHITE, likely a son of Elizabeth. This Thomas White lices two homes away from Robert and Mary McCreight CHERRY. William B. was the son of Artemisia DANIEL, sister of Sarah Jane DANIEL who married James McCREIGHT. Sarah and James were the parents of Mary who married Robert CHERRY above.

The 1900 census provides an alternate birth date of April 1872.
"Lena owned a 200 acre farm with three houses and three mules. The houses were occupied by three tenants who had bought the mules but had never paid for them. When she died, she left the mules , or the proceeds of the sale of the mules (if the tenants paid up) to her children. Interestingly, she wrote the will only four days before her death. Recorded 10/20/1917 Fulton Co Ga.
She was the second wife of Irwin. In addition to the three boys, she had a daughter, Nina, and two stepdaughters from Irwin's previous marrige. Listed in the death notice for Lena these three by their married names: Mrs. P. Walton Nation, Mrs. A. E. Williams, and Mrs. J. W. Ragsdale." (David Leon "Tuck" Wilson III)

Dr. Olin McBride and Fr. Scott Nead will officiate. A native of Aiken, Mrs. Williamson was a daughter of the late Dr. Robert H. and Annabelle (Ashley) Wilds. She was a homemaker. Cullum, Charleston; one daughter, Eleanor Cullum Studley, Aiken; on(e) brother, Dr. Preston Lee [sic] Wilds, Norfolk, Va.; three grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Friends may call from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. Monday at George Funeral Homes, Downtown. Aiken Standard, September, 2000, Aiken, SC
Editorials - Julia Wilds Williamson
Julia Wilds Williamson died Sept. 21 after a lingering illness. She was 86. She had led an interesting life, with ties to Old Aiken and to Aiken's Winter Colony.
Her father was Dr. Robert H. Wilds, a heroic young physician who came to Aiken first as a teacher and later served in World War I. Dr. Wilds married Annabelle Ashley, whose home, Orange Grove, now greatly altered, is one of Aiken's historic homes.
Julia was their only daughter, and she was eight when her mother died tragically of blood poisoning contracted after being stuck by a hat pin in those days before penicillin.
Some years later Dr. Wilds was married in a ceremony in New York to Eleanor Phelps, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sheffield Phelps and sister of Miss Claudia Phelps, the last Phelps to occupy Rose Hill in Aiken.
Dr. Wilds and his bride built a handsome English-style home on a walled estate on Hayne Avenue. There Julia grew to young womanhood. She attended Fermata School and became skilled at equestrian sports and also tennis and golf.
At an early age, she was married to Norman E. Cullum, a young Aiken attorney. They had two children, and Mr. Cullum died, still a young man.
His widow Julia worked for a time selling real estate for Durban-Laird Co. She also was a member of the hospital auxiliary and as a Gray Lady worked as a volunteer at the VA hospital in Augusta.
She eventually married Leonard Williamson, another attorney who achieved distinction for his role in a famous case involving a series of murders in Aiken. Mr. Williamson and Julian B. Salley, Jr. were appointed by the court to represent L. D. Harris, a black man charged with the murder of a Six Points merchant and his wife. Harris was convicted and sentenced to death, despite evidence that his confession had been forced. The two lawyers appealed his sentence and went to Washington in 1948 to plead their case before the U. S. Supreme Court, winning freedom for Harris. Years later another man confessed to the Six Point murders and two other murders in Aiken.
Later Williamson became circuit solicitor and is still remembered for his eloquent courtroom manner and also the compassion he showed for those appearing before the court. He died a number of years ago.
Mr. Salley, still practicing in Aiken, speaks highly of Mr. Williamson's role in the case, and he remembers Mrs. Williamson as "a really lovely lady."
We extend our deepest sympathies to her family.
