John THREEWITS was the eldest son of Capt. Joel THREEWITS, who died during the Revolution. Apparently, he was born in Virginia and moved with his parents to South Carolina. Through grants, he received a total of 124 acres on the Congaree River and settled in the area which became Lexington County.
This record may be John's departure from Sussex County, Virginia: 1777 Sussex County, Virginia Land Deeds : "31 Jan 1777. John Threewits to Joel Newman for 40 lbs current money of VA - 214 acres on the southside of the Nottoway River. Part is located in Cabbinstick Swamp." Notes. Joel Newman is the husband of Lucy Hill.
Active in the militia during the American Revolution, he was stationed at Purysburg (1778-1779), serving under his father, Capt. Joel THREEWITS, and Orangeburg as a captain, later brigade major, of horse under Col. TAYLOR (1779, 1780, 1781, 1782). At various times, John held the rank of private, lieutenant, captain, and brigade major.

John was regularly named to be administrator of family affairs and executor of family wills.
According to the 1800 federal census, he was a resident of Saxe Gotha Township and owned thirty-five slaves.
On February 26, 1802, John sold the 350 acres granted to his father to Jonathan WEAVER.
John THREEWITS, for many years, was a Senator from the election district of Saxe-Gotha, later Lexington. He was one of the best known men in the state from his long service in both branches of the General Assembly and from his war record. That is why Chancellor Deseussure refers to him intimately as "Major THREEWITS". (A.S. Salley, Jr.)
John and his brother, Llewellin, were representatives of Saxe-Gotha to the South Carolina Constitutional convention. Both voted against ratifying the new Constitution of the United States as recorded in this vote: FRIDAY, May 23, 1788. On motion, Resolved, That this Convention do assent to and ratify the Constitution agreed to on the 17th day of September last, by the Convention of the United States of America, held at Philadelphia. On the question being put to agree to the same, the yeas and nays were called for by the unanimous voice of the Convention, and are as follows: -- District of Saxe-Gotha. -- Yea: Hon. Henry PENDLETON. 1. -- Nays: Hon. Richard HOMPTON, J. CULPEPER, William FITZPATRICK, Llewellen THREEWITS, John THREEWITS, Wade HAMPTON. 6. Two hundred and twenty-two representatives attended the session, with 140 voting in favor and 73 voting against. The resolution was adopted by a majority of 67 votes.
Returned to the House by Saxe Gotha, he served in the Eleventh General Assembly (1794-1795). Continuing to represent his home parish, THREEWITS was elected to the state Senate and was a member of the Twelfth (1796-1797), Thirteenth (1798-1799), Fourteenth (1800-1801), and Fifteenth (1802-1804) General Assemblies. On 16 December 1806, he qualified as a state Senator to represent Saxe Gotha in the Seventeenth General Assembly (1806-1808). Other offices he held included commissioner, for the inspection and exportation of tobacco at Friday's Ferry on the Congaree River (1789); commissioner, to open and improve navigation of the Congaree (1791); road commissioner for Lexington County (1792) ; and commissioner, to lay out lots in the town of Saxe Gotha (1807).
The 1820 Census for Lexington District, page 4, lists the household of John THREEWITS as 0 0 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 0 1.The 1840 Census for Lexington lists Major John THREEWITS on Series: M704 Roll: 513 Page 119, one male 80-90, lives alone.
Major John THREEWITS died 22 February 1842, two years after his wife, Mary THOMAS died, she dieing before the 1840 census. John and Mary had no offspring.

SUPPOSITION: "Jennie married Jim Thornton, Lee also married Jim Thornton after Jennie passed away." (Marlane Daniel) Lee DANIEL was Jennie's sister. Using this information and the 1910 census, it appears that Jennie may have died after giving birth to Kate about 1904. About five years later, Mar 1909, Pearl was born and James is listed as a widow in 1910. If Jennie died after Kate was born, Pearl would be the daughter of James and Lee; and Lee too had died before June 1910. Adding credence to this possibility is the fact that Golden DANIEL, age 4, thought to be a son of Lee, is named as James THORNTON's step-son in the 1910 census. Curiously, a Golden DANIEL, age 5, is also named as a grandson residing in the household of his grandfather, John A. DANIEL. Lee is not in either home.
In 1920 James THORNTON has moved to Troup County, Georgia and is married to Susie. Pearl, 11, is his youngest child. He has remarried to Susie, belived to be Susie C. WATTS, the widow of Earnest Lee HOOD. Susie's son Will HOOD is named with the family as "Son."

"Joel THREEWITS, the elder, had 350 acres of land certified to him January 5, 1773, and granted January 20, 1773, on Stevens Creek, Ninety Six District. He had four sons and two daughters, which accounts for the acreage at the then bounty of 50 acres for each member of the family above two years of age. Some time after this he married Mrs. Mary THOMAS, widow of John THOMAS, 3rd. She had a son, John, and two daughters, Mary and Sarah THOMAS. John died under age prior to 1787. Sarah married Roland WILLIAMSON and Mary married her step-brother, John THREEWITS. Joel THREEWITS served in the militia of South Carolina during the Revolution at Purysburg, December 1, 1778 to February 1, 1779, and at Augusta and Stono, February 20 to May 26, 1779, attaining the rank of captain in the regiment of Co1. Robert GOODWYN. He was either killed, or died in service, as his son John, in an affidavit dated September 13, 1784, declared that the "acct; against the Publick as stated was left by the above named Capt. Joel THREEWITS deceased". John also receipted for the pay due on the account, as administrator, September 3, 1785." A.S. Salley, Jr.
Joel THREEWITS died intestate before 10 July 1782 when his wife Mary was named administrix of his estate. (Green's "History of Richland County", page 215)

Joesephine Love THREEWITS, daughter of Llewellyn Williamson THREEWITS and Josephine Love RIVERS, was born 24 January 1843. Four months later, her mother died. The 1850 and 1860 censuses of Randolph County, Georgia show that Josephine was raised by her aunt and uncle, James Crosskey RIVERS and Emma THREEWITS, the brother of her mother who married the sister of her father.
In 1863, Josephine married John F. UPTON.
Josephine died in Jefferson County, Georgia. She is buried in Providence Baptist Cemetery: "JOSEPHINE UPTON Mother Died 1889 - age about 40 yrs." (Cemetery Inscriptions Jefferson County, GA, from Dian Laymon, 1/28/2008)

Obituary: James Harrold Van Sicklen died Jan. 3, 2001, at the University Retirement Center in Davis. Born Aug. 3, 1917, in Oakland, he was 83. He grew up in Oakland and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1939. During World War II he served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. In 1947, he married Winifred Tinning. They made their home in Orinda for 49 years. He worked for the Atkins Kroll Co. and the Milligan Spica-California Equipment Co. until his retirement in 1983. After retiring, he earned a certificate in landscape design and was a board member and docent at the UC Botanical Gardens. He moved to Davis in 1997 and lived in Covell Gardens until spring of 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred; his brother, William Parker Van Sicklen; and his sister, Maryann Sadler. He is survived by his children, Susan Calfee and her husband, Kent of Davis, Isabel Van Sicklen of Modesto and James Van Sicklen Jr. of Stockton; and four grandchildren, Corinne and David Calfee and Andrew and Charles Van Sicklen. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 640 Hawthorn Lane. Memorial donations may be made to Yolo Hospice, P.O. She attended the Dominican Convent in San Rafael and received her sheepskin from the University of California with the class of 1941 and wore the key of the Kappa Kappa Gamma soroiety. Son of the Peter Theodore Wittschens, also of the East Bay, is her fiance, who has two sisters, Mrs. John Adams, the former Miss Peggy Wittschen, and Miss Katherine Wittschen. He, too, was graduated last year from the State university and is affiliated with the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. No plans have been made as yet for the marriage. About seven months after her engagement was announced, Winifred's fiance, Theodore Peter Wittschen, Jr., born 19 December 1919 in Alameda County, California, died at sea. Amanda BATES is recorded as Artemas's second wife, likely married soon after Angelina's death in April 1883. If Artemas and Amanda had children, they are not recorded in the census of 1900 and may have died young. The 1910 census shows Artemus and Amelia W. married for 25 years which would mean married about 1885. If true, then Amanda is presumed to have died by 1885, less than 2 years after her marriage to Artemus, possibly a result of childbirth.

There is a 15 year gap in the ages of Artemus' children by his first wife, from the last child in the censuses born 1877, and this wife, first known child born in 1892.
