Obituary: Pentis - Marie Carole Winfrey, 62, native of San Diego, loving mother of John, Barbara, and Suzanne, passed away at her home December 4, 1995, of cancer, with her children at her bedside. She is survived by her children and devoted sister, Beverlie, of Pacific Beach. Last year for the first time since 1957, she returned with her daughers to Marin County, where she attended college and her 3 children were born. She had a passion for native plants and wildlife, and gave much of her time to t he California Native Plant Society, Santa Barbara Botanical Garden, and was a volunteer Canyoneer for the Natural History Museum for 20 years, where she led guided walks, and interviewed and trained other volunteers. She was an avid hiker and camper thro ughout San Diego County. She loved our local habitats, from the mountains to the desert wildflowers, to the coastal lagoons. What she truly knew best was how to give. She was a very special woman with many caring, longtime friends, neighbors and family. There was an outpouring of love as she said goodbye. Private services were held by her children in the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden during a beautiful sunrise on Thursday, December 7. A guided walk at the San Elijo Lagoon Reserve in Solana Beach will b e held in Marie's honor on Sunday, December 17, at 12 noon. Please join us, all family and friends are welcome. If you wish to express your love, the family suggests a contribution in her memory to the San Diego Natural History Museum Canyoneers, P.O. Bo x 1390, San Diego, CA 92112. General Notes: Child - Mary Jane KINNEY

Mary Jane KINNEY was a daughter of James William KINNEY and Serena KING of Wilkinson County, Georgia. Mary may have been known as "Nancy." Family researchers list her as "Nancy KINNEY, born September 10, 1826." but do not list a sister "Mary Jane." Her marriage record listed in the History of Wilkinson County names her as "Nancy I. KINNEY" while four censuses name her as Mary.

Serena King KINNEY's half-brother, James B. KING of Wilkerson County, mentions Serena's children Mary and her brother George Washington KINNEY in his LW&T.
James KING, 9/29/1842: After the death of my mother, property to be divided between Washington KINNEY, Mary KINNEY and Lucinda BOURLAND.

Mary J. KINEY [sic] became a member of the Liberty Baptist Church "by Experience" on July 30th, 1846.

In 1850 Wilkinson County, Georgia, Mary, age 18, born about 1832, lives with Serena KINNEY, her widowed mother. 1850 U.S. Census, Georgia, Wilkinson County; Series: M432 Roll: 87 Page: 355: 261 261 Serena KINNEY 55 F Farming 700 GA; George 23 M Farming GA; Elijah KINNEY 21 M Farming GA; Mary 18 F GA.

The History of Wilkinson County, Georgia, p. 314, lists the marriage of "Robert I. DANIEL" to "Nancy I. KINNEY" on Sept 12, 1850, by John L. STEPHENS, J. P. Her marriage to Robert Tucker DANIELL, son of Jesse DANIELL and Mary Ann TUCKER, is apparently listed twice in his mother's Widow's Pension Application, "R. T. DANIELL was married to Mary J. KINNEY Sept 15th 1850" and "Robert T. DANIELL was married to Mary J. FINNEY [sic] 14th Sept 1850."

In 1860 Robert T.'s wife, Mary J. is 28, born about 1832, in 1870 Mary is 33, born about 1837, and in 1880, Mary J. is 47, born about 1833.

"In 1880 Mary Kinney Daniel was living in the home of Loderick Jones." (Wilkinson County Georgia Historical Collections, p. 318)Elsewhere in this book is a mention of Mary's daughter Viola who married Loderick. Curiously, T9 Roll: 172 Page 372, the 1880 census of Wilkinson lists Mary with her huband Robert T.

General Notes: Child - William Oscar KINNEY

"WILLIAM OSCAR KINNEY Of all the sons of Wilkinson County who have gone forth to make their success elsewhere none is more loved and respected by the people of the County than is William Oscar Kinney of Macon - and of Irwinton (for Irwinton is proud to claim him as a citizen of the town, even though his duties permit him to spend but a small portion of his time here). Mr. Kinney was born August 8, 1870, at his father's old home five miles east of Irwinton the son of James William and Epsy Jane (Mackey) Kinney. The latter was the daughter of William and Eliza Mackey early settlers of Wilkinson WILLIAM OSCAR KINNEY County, both of whom were natives of South Carolina. His father, James William was the son of James William, Sr., and Mary (King) Kinney, the latter being the daughter of Elisha King of Hancock County. James William Kinney, Sr., was born and reared nine miles from Pittsburg, Penn., on the Monongahela River. He was given the advantages of a good education and under good instructors developed his talent for music. As a mathematician he had few superiors. He left his native State between 1810 and 1815 and came to Milledgeville. Here he obtained employment in the Academy as instructor of higher mathematics, and at the same time teaching music. In 1825 when Lafayette was a visitor at Milledgeville, he was invited to take part in the entertainment of that noble Frenchman, and was a member of the mounted escort which accompanied him as far as Macon. Some years after this he moved to Wilkinson county where he served as County Surveyor from 1830 to 1844. Due to disability Mr. Kinney's father did not serve in the Confederate Army during the War Between the States, yet he performed patriotic service such as he was able. Mr. Kinney also had four uncles on his mother's side to be killed while in service. Mr. Kinney received his education at Talmage Institute, and after his graduation here took a business course at the Lexington Kentucky University. He then moved to Macon in 1891, where he accepted the position of Bookkeeper for the A.B. Small Co., Wholesale Grocers. He served in this capacity until 1894, then formed a partnership with B.T. Adams, entering into the cotton business, in which he remained until 1916. After this he began a cotton business of his own which he now operates. During all these years Mr. Kinney's love for his native County has not diminished. For years he has maintained his country home here in Irwinton, and whenever possible he spends days here hunting with old friends, who still know him as "Oscar." He is also interested in pecans and pineapple pears, owning the finest orchard and grove in the County. Four years ago Mr. Kinney having been elected a member of the County Commissioners of Bibb County, was chosen Chairman of that body and served out that term. He has been elected for another four years as a member. Of special interest to the people of this county is his official position inasmuch as every possible effort is now being put forth by him for the county to get the co- operation of Bibb and other counties in the building of the Irwinton and Macon Highway, and all here know they have an advocate in him towards carrying this project through. Mr. Kinney was married December 4, 1895, to Miss Clara Guerry, daughter of Judge DuPont and Fannie (Davenport) Guerry, the latter of an old Americus family. Mr. Kinney's inherent friendliness has won the hearts of the people of Irwinton and she, too, is regarded as a part of Wilkinson County's citizenry. Her appointment as a member of the Georgia Delegation to the 1928 Presidential Convention was hailed with delight here as well as her success in the two last Municipal elections in Macon. Mr. and Mrs. Kinney have reared four sons and one daughter; DuPont Guerry Kinney, who served with distinction in the Rainbow Division during the World War; William Oscar Kinney, Jr., a rapidly rising Attorney of Macon; Francis Davenport Kinney; Clara Virginia (Mrs. W.L. Stribling, Jr.) and Frederick Kinney." (History of Wilkinson County Georgia)

General Notes: Husband - Moses KIRKLAND

Moses KIRKLAND married Patience RAIFORD, daughter of Philip RAIFORD III and Sarah KINCHEN. Moses was a loyalist who campaigned against this war of independence saying , "If this dispute becomes serious, the people of South Carolina shall feel the weight of my influence." He resigned his commission in the South Carolina militia (Captain) and to the utmost of his power , encouraged opposition to the measures of Congress.
He got involved with John STUART and John MOULTRIE in a British plot to coordinate an Indian uprising at the same time British naval and land troops attacked from the sea and from Florida but he was captured carrying the plans to Boston in 1775 and the plot was discovered. The Continental Congress published the plans to show the undecided Americans how barbaric the British were, as the Indians were likely to be indiscriminate, killing Whigs and Tories alike.
The following is a biography that appears in "Biographical Dictionary of South Carolina Representatives" on page 380 and 381:
Moses KIRKLAND an influential back country planter and mill owner who was in South Carolina by 1752 when he settled on the Wateree River. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the fork of the Broad and Saluda Rivers where he established a successful sawmill and gristmill and became proprietor of a ferry. By the time of the Revolution, he had accumulated over 3000 acres of land in the back country and had established himself of wealth and strong persuasion. In 1775, he sold his mills and moved to Turkey Creek in the Ninety Six District where he owned and operated a prosperous 95 acre indigo plantation.
As a leading entrepreneur in the back country, KIRKLAND was active in the Regulator movement which sought to restore law and order in the back parishes. A man of notorious character, he was not opposed to using unscrupulous means to gain his desired results. Rather rough in language and behavior, he involved himself in petitioning the Commons House for circuit courts and in vigilante type action which served to publicize the plight of the back country. As a result, he won election to the 28th Royal Assembly (1768) from St. James Goose Creek Parish, although he never qualified before the Assembly was dissolved. His election was made possible by the insistence of Saxe-Gotha and Beaver Creek residents that they had a right to vote in the St. James Goose Creek as newly drawn parish boundaries excluded them from St. Matthew Parish. Successful in their scheme, they cast their votes for Regulators and carried the parish. Despite his desire for justice in 1768. He had earlier in his career been involved in questionable and illegal activities. In the 1750's, he had been accused of selling liquor to the Catawba Indians and of harboring runaway slaves. During the sale of rum to the Indians, he admitted that he held the slaves but promised to return them to their owners. In 1770, his land grants in Saxe-Gotha Township were revoked due to his strong involvement in a fraudulent plot to steal land warrants in the township. Meanwhile he continued to hold local offices for he was a road commissioner in the back country (1765), a justice of the peace for Ninety Six District (1770, 1773, 1774, 1775) and for Orangeburg District (1774), and a deputy surveyor (1774)
In 1776, he was described as a "stout corpulent man between 50 and 60 years of age, about five feet ten inches high of a swarthy complexion" who dressed richly in velvet, and "whose vanity and ambition had not been sufficiently gratified by his countrymen." Commissioned by the Frist Provincial Congress in 1775 as a militia captain, he accepted it and occupied Fort Charlotte on the Savannah River. Because of jealousy of another's higher rank, Kirkland returned with his troop to Ninety Six District, where he deserted and joined the loyalist forces. He was successful in carrying his entire troop with him. After several skirmishes, an abortive attempt to capture Fort Charlotte and Augusta, and the threat of capture by Whigs, KIRKLAND offered to surrender if a full pardon were guaranteed. When this was not forthcoming, he fled to Charleston and was disguised and hidden aboard the British sloop of war Tamar. His willingness to change sides cast doubts upon his unswerving loyalty to the Crown. Arriving in St. Augustine in late 1775, he served as a messenger for John Stuart, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. En route to Boston, KIRKLAND was captured by the patriots and imprisoned in Philadelphia. He escaped in May, 1776 and returned to Florida in 1777 when he was appointed Deputy Superintendent to the Seminoles. In this capacity, he used his influence to persuade the Creeks to assist the British against the Americans. He also advised Sir Henry CLINTON in 1778 to instigate a slave rebellion in order to insure a British victory in the South. In 1778 and 1779, he led Tory refugees to Georgia. On 6 July 1780, he was commissioned a major and resumed command of a Tory regiment in Ninety Six District, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He resigned his militia duties because he was not promoted to brigadier general. Until July 1782, he resided in Savannah, and after the British evacuated the town, he moved to St. George Parish, Jamaica.
On August 19, 1783, the Assembly of the State of Georgia passed an Act of Attainder, Banishments and Confiscation that took from all known Loyalists, property they held in Georgia and banished them from the state. Moses KIRKLAND was among those named as a Loyalist.
KIRKLAND married twice. His first wife, a Carolinian, was Patience RAIFORD, daughter of Isaac RAIFORD. One son was born to this marriage, Moses (b. 1764?). While residing in Jamaica in 1783, he married his second wife, Catherine. Another son, Richard Bruce, was born to this union. In December 1787, Moses KIRKLAND was lost at sea while en route to England. His younger son appealed to the Crown in the name of his deceased father for loss of property which included 11,460 acres of land, stretching from the Santee River in South Carolina to the Tombigbee River in Alabama, 36 slaves and personal property and notes valued at L 3,407. 22. 10 sterling. His older son, Moses, petitioned the South Carolina government in 1799 for a return of his father's property which had been confiscated in 1782, and the state Senate granted a return of all lands not disposed of prior to the petition.
Note: In the above biography Patience RAIFORD was called the daughter of Isaac RAIFORD. Her father was Philip RAIFORD III according to information now discovered.
This Edgefield, South Carolina deed of sale shows the disposition of some of the property Moses KIRKLAND forfeited as a result of his support of the Crown during the Revolutionary War: 25 Apr 1792: RICHARD JOHNSON, Junr., Planter and MARY his wife and JOEL CHANDLER, Planter of Edgefield Co. General Notes: Husband - Richard KIRKLAND

"Richard Kirkland of Truro Parish, Prince William Co., VA, gave Gift Deeds to two sons, first Edward in 1714, and second to Richard Snowden Kirkland in 1740, which proves a middle name he seldom used but passed on to his own son. KIRKLAND was on the 1742 list of eligible voter <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/princewilliam/Pwc1742a.gif>s in Prince William Co., VA, but sold his land in Virginia on 15 Feb 1746 to follow his brother John to Granville Co., North Carolina, where both received land patents. Richard Snowden Kirkland and his wife MARY BROWN may have lived with John for a period of time while he applied for and awaited the Granville Grant he received in Granville Co. on 20 June 1748, to 300 acres of land "on Island Creek," where he had probably lived three years; the survey is found today in the NC State Archives, but not the grant.
He sold this 300 acres on 1 Sep 1749. Richard Snowden Kirkland had the distinction of being an original land owner in three colonies: Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Kirklands were some of the earliest arrivals (about 1750) in the part of Camden District, Old Craven Co., SC, which became Fairfield and Kershaw Cos. They included RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND, his brothers EDWARD, ROBERT, WILLIAM and their children; and their brother JOHN's son FRANCIS KIRKLAND. 5 May 1752, the Precept date when Richard S. Kirkland went before the Colony's Council to ask for land for himself, wife, and 3 children from up north, 350 acres at foot of Wateree Creek, bordered on N. by Wateree River, SE by land laid out to RICHARD GREGGRIE and land laid out to JOSEPH GATES, and vacant, and the NW border is vacant. next step in the process was to await the official Survey, which took place on 27 July 1752, the Plat date when the land was surveyed and certified by the deputy surveyor. of course, the deputy surveyor notified his government, and on 11 May 1754 Richard's Grant date 350 acres was laid out for him "on the Wateree River, foot of Wateree Creek," "by George Hunter, His majesty's surveyor" under precept dated 5 May 1752 but survey not made until 27 Jul 1753. He sold the land. on 17 Aug 1753, Richard Kirkland of Craven Co. buys 567 acres of land on S. of land granted Samuel BACOT 6 Oct 1752 and certified 23 May 1749, bounded NE on said road, SE vacant and part on John TOD, Jr., and vacant. of the more famous (or infamous) of their sons was RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND's son MOSES Family 2", http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~madgenealogist/KirklandFamily2.html)

On 23 November 1714, Richard KIRKLAND and Cornelius KEEIFE received 268 acres in Northern Neck land grant 59, recorded in Book 5, page 6.
"North side Occoquan adjacent Richard RIDGWELL.
Richard KIRKLAND deeded to son Edward 100 acres 24 September 1739 and to son Richard Snowden KIRKLAND 100 acres. (Pr. Wm. Deeds D:227 and E: 53. E:53 is dated 23 June 1740)" (Beginning at a White Oak..., Beth Mitchell, p. 201)

A Northern Neck Land Grant, #233, to Richard KIRTLING, Jr. for 290 acres on 12 September 1730 is recorded in Book C, page 69.
"Popeshead, Bull Run adjacent ARRINGTON and BEVERS.
Richard KIRKLAND and Mary his wife sold for £70 current money of Virginia to William DAVIS 290 acres granted said Richard KIRKLAND 12 September 1730. Also included was a water grist mill standing on Popeshead Run. ( Fx. Deeds B:246. 16 February 1746)" (Beginning at a White Oak..., Beth Mitchell, p. 201)

General Notes: Husband - William KIRKLAND

From "Our illustrious Ancestors" at http://katharinesweb.net/Ancestors/Kirkland/WmKirkland.htm:
[There are apparent discrepancies in this. RLD]
"William Kirkland (William1) was born in or about 1736 in Virginia. He was issued a land plat in 1753 and settled at Cedar Creek, in Fairfield County, South Carolina. By August 24, 1759, he was married to 1st Elizabeth McKinney, and his brother was married to her sister, Leminda. Their father, Benjamin McKinnee, had them listed in his will, witnessed by William Kirkland, naming among his 12 children, Leminda Kirkland and Elizabeth Kirkland. McKinnee was settled about eight miles south of Camden as early as 1746, when he received a land conveyance from Charles Radcliff.
In the Revolutionary War, William Kirkland served as a captain. The following is taken from the Revolutionary War records in the State House:
"William Kirkland (of Cedar Creek), 261 pounds 16s 8d currency, 37 pounds 8-1 sterling for 68 days as Captain of Horse in Gen. Williamson's Brigade at Augusta in 1779. Sworn to before John Winn, J. P., certified correct by Lieut-Col. Joseph Kirkland."
He and his brother Joseph are mentioned in Mills Statistics as being brave fighters in the cause of the colonists. They both served as members in the State Assembly of 1782 in Jacksonboro, which confiscated the land from Tories.
William and Elizabeth had eight children who were recorded in his estate papers and a family bible:
Zachariah, who married Martha Raiford, daughter of Isaac Raiford.
Moses, who married Patience Raiford, sister of Isaac (above). [The Moses Kirkland who married Patience Raiford was William's brother, not son. RLD]
Sarah
Patience.
William, Jr.
Samuel.
Frances
Joseph, who married Maryanne (Kennan) Guerard. He was a medical doctor and practiced in Charleston, South Carolina.
William married 2nd Lucretia Pearson. Their children were not named in the bible record. William died on February 18, 1807 [sic, 1806. RLD], in Fairfield, South Carolina. His will, probated on December 27, 1806 in Winnsboro, named his son Joseph as executor, and left his property to his children, Sarah Taylor, Frances Alston, Archy, Mary Honor, John Debell, and Martha Maria. The last three or four named are supposedly children from his second marriage.

There are two William KIRKLAND enumerated in Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1790:

Based on the above Will, I have placed Mary Honoria, John DeBell and Martha Maria Kiirkland as children by Lucretia Pearson, under the assumption they are listed in order of birth.

General Notes: Wife - Lucretia PEARSON

Find A Grave Memorial# 80290949 for Mary Honoria Kirkland Cook, daughter of William Kirkland and Lucretia Pearson cites this reference on Mary Honoria's parents:
"Per the book Fairfield County Cemeteries Vol III pg 20: she [Mary Honoria] was the wife of Burrel B Cook and age 83 yr 3 m at the time of her death. Her DOB comes from the book Southside Virginia Families, Volume 1 by John Bennett Boddie pg 165: Burrell Brown Cook...married October 1, 1818, Mary Honoria Kirkland, born February 24 1800, the daughter of Captain William Kirkland and his second wife, Lucretia Pearson."

Lucretia is believed to have died before December 1806 when William Kirkland made his Will which did not mention a wife, but did name daughter Mary Honora, under age 21.

Happy Birthday Marissa! Marissa trained for 8 months for entry in the USCG. She studied a notebook I prepared for her and worked out everyday. Marissa is in great company in Yankee 183 with the children of all of you. I'm so proud I could just bust! God bless all of Yankee 183 and our families! GO RECRUITS! Oh ya, SR Kish is also one of Yankee 183's Squad Leaders :-) "

Wakulla native Marissa Kish graduated from the Coast Guard basic training camp in Cape May in New Jersey on Oct. 15.
