"the former Doris E. Murphy" named as his surviving wife in the December 1961 obituary of Vernie Dempsey.

Woman Dies in House Blaze
A 49-year-old woman was burned to death early Sunday morning when flames swept through a house on Sylvester Drive. Mrs. Doris Ethel Murphy Dempsey's body was found among the ruins of the house located at 2523 Sylvester Drive. According to Coroner Jack Gregory, her body was burned beyond recognition. Mrs. Dempsey and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry W. Dempsey, her son and daughter-in-law, had retired around 11 p.m. Saturday. The family's pet dog began barking around 3 a.m. awakening Dempsey and his wife. Dempsey reported the house was filled with smoke. He managed to get a window open and he and his wife got out to safety. Mrs. Dempsey, the deceased, was reportedly sleeping in the rear of the house where it appeared the fire started. Attempts to reach her proved futile. Everything within the structure was reportedly lost. The Weekly Moultrie Observer, Thursday, September 14, 1972

Obituary: Funeral services for Mrs. Doris Ethel Murphy Dempsey were held Monday afternoon in Temple Baptist Church with interment in the Murphy Cemetery. The Rev. Myrtice Goff and the Rev. David Stokes officiated. Serving as pall bearers were Bobby Murphy, Jimmy Dempsey, Billy Fender, Junior Smithwick, Hilton Murphy and Larry Murphy. Mrs. Dempsey died early Sunday morning. She was 49 years old. Mrs. Murphy was the daughter of the later Mr. and Mrs. Lester Murphy and was born in Colquitt County on March 10, 1923. Survivors include her step-mother, Mrs. Annie Mae Murphy of Coolidge; two sons, Ronald C. Dempsey of Lakeland, Fla., and Jerry W. General Notes: Husband - William H. KILLINGSWORTH

"Elizabeth Susannah Kester married Joseph D. Reese. They had only one child, Mary Raiford Reese. Mary married 1st William H. Killingsworth and they had only one child. Her name was Frances Elizabeth Killingsworth. Frances married John Morgan Rawlinson. When I have more time, I'll check the Rawlinson information. I believe that one of their granddaughters was named Martha Maria. Mary R. Reese (Killingsworth) later married Gideon Jesse Garner and that's where my grandmother comes in. My great grandmother Marie Gertrude Garner (Jones) had three daughters. The youngest daughter was named Frances and was names after Frances Killingsworth (Rawlinson). Though Frances Killingsworth was a 1/2 sister to all of the Garner children, they were very close. They called her "Sister Frank" and almost each Garner sibling named a child Frances after Sister Frank.
I know that Jesse Killingsworth is the grandfather of Frances Killingsworth (Rawlinson). Green's book has her listed as daughter, but I downloaded his will from the SC archives site and it clearly says his granddaughter Frances Rawlinson. Frances Killingsworth married John Morgan Rawlinson before Jesse Killingsworth wrote his will. Also, Wm. H. Killingsworth died b/f Jesse wrote his will. I have wondered if Jesse Killingsworth's first wife was Elizabeth Fox, daughter of William Fox. Green's book pp 262 and 263." [Lee Radford, email, 1 Jul 2010]

General Notes: Husband - Philip WRAYFORD I

Philip WRAYFORD was born about 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He was christened on 2 Dec 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He died about 1724 in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He came to Virginia from Bermuda , prior to 1681 for he was granted 350 acres in April, 1681 in Isle of Wight, Virginia as a reward for importing seven settlers who presumably were his indentured servants. His name is spelled WRAYFORD on the grant and RAYFORD in his will. His Will was probated 12/28/1724. Philip and his wife Sarah were the original emigrants and they settled in the Isle of Wright. ( History of Richland Co., p 55) A William BODDIE bought 150 acres from Philip and Sarah on March 4th, 1687. Philip died in North Carolina. (Sou. Hist. Fam. Vol 1 by Boddie)

"Philip RAIFORD arrived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia before 1680. He died there in 1724. After many years of research, the author has concluded that this Philip was the only bearer of the RAIFORD name to migrate to the American mainland, and that it is highly probable that the entire RAIFORD clan in America can trace its ancestry to him."
"There is also recorded in the Isle of Wight, Virginia, Will and Deed Book, Volume 1, Part 2, page 482, an indenture between "Phillip RAYFORD" and Thomas MANDUE for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 6th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWN and George PIERCE. It was pledged in court on the 9th of June 1682, and ordered to be recorded. On page 467 of this same volume, there appears an indenture between George and Anne PIERCE and "Phillip RAYFORD" for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 9th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWNE and Thomas MANDUE. It was pledged in court on the 20th of October 1685, and ordered to be recorded. On page 596 of this same volume, "Phillip RAIFORD sells to Thomas HARRIS 150 acres, part of a pat. of 350 acres granted Phillip RAIFORD, 23 Apl., 1681. Sarah his wife signs. Teste, John BROWN, Phillip MECONDINE."*. This indenture is dated the 9th of February 1687, and was witnessed by John BROWN and Philip MECCONDINE. Herein was mentioned, for the first time, a wife of Philip RAIFORD, they probably having been married between October 9, 1681 and February 9, 1687."

General Notes: Wife - Sarah KINCHEN

Sarah KINCHEN married Philip RAIFORD. Philip includes a mention of his brother-in-law, William KINCHEN, in his Will, dated 23 Jul 1723. Sarah was not mentioned by name, at least not in this abstract. 28 Dec 1724, Isle of Wight Co, VA: PHILIP RAYFORD (I): Leg. sons Robert, William, Matthew, PHILIP (II). General Notes: Child - Patience RAIFORD

Patience RAIFORD was born about 1681. "As for the third daughter listed in Philip RAIFORD's will, Patience - there appear to be no records extant of her life, her marriage or her death. Patience is said to have married Arthur WHITEHEAD (born 1715, died 1748), but no record has been located to substantiate that union. In addition, the disparity in their probable birthdates make such a union highly unlikely." (RAIFORD FAMILY by W. R. Raiford, 1989, page 48.) (NOTE FROM RAPH TERRY: W. R. Raiford on page 144 in RAIFORD FAMILY, does not explain why he shows Moses KIRKLAND as the probable husband of Patience Raiford.)
Did Patience marry. Joseph LANE, Jr.? 1728- Patience LANE gave to Matthew RAIFORD & Joseph LANE, her husband, Power of Attorney to land in Bertie Precinct, Edgecombe Co, NC (McBee, page110). 1733- The land was bought back by LANE.
She was married to Moses KIRKLAND.
She was married to Joseph LANE.

Raleigh, North Carolina: 1886 - 1890, Vol. 4, page 330.) Philip Raiford moved to North Carolina about 1700. In 1739, Philip was selling his lands in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, in preparation for his move to South Carolina, to establish the "South Carolina Raifords." It is not known why Philip chose to make this move, for South Carolina was still in the early stages of development, only slightly ahead of Georgia, which had been settled by Oglethorpe in 1733. Philip and his wife Martha migrated to the fork of Congaree and Wateree Rivers and settled on the creek named for them, "Raiford Creek", now Mill Creek. They were among the very first settlers in Richland County. Philip II came soon after his father's death in North Carolina and on January 6, 1740 Certified 450 acres on Mill Creek below Bluff Road. Three days later, he obtained 300 acres more. (History of Richland County, p. 27. He and Martha appear as married in a 1724 Bertie Co. N.C. deed in 1720 (p. 108). Though a daughter Martha isn't named in the Philip's will above, I think he had one who was named Martha, after her mother, who married William HOWELL. This is derived from Philip's deed of gift to "his beloved son" William HOWELL and then William's will naming his wife Martha.) (Source: Abstracts of Wills of the State of South Carolina 1740-1760 (SC
929.3), by Moore)

This is written about Philip's nephew William RAIFORD, Jr.: "The descendants of William, Jr. are legion, and for the majority of them in the succeeding three or four generations, their residences remained in either Isle or Wight or Southampton County throughout their lives. For this chief reason, the descendants of William, Jr. have always been referred to as the "Virginia Raifords;" whereas the descendants of William, Sr.'s brother, Matthew have become known as the "North Carolina Raifords," and the descendants of brother Philip, the "South Carolina Raifords."
Richland County, South Carolina, occupies a central position in the state. When the present county was first entered by settlers, it was a part of Craven County, North Carolina, and was occasionally referred to as St. Mark's Parish. Camden District was formed in 1768, embracing territory that was later divided into seven counties, one of which was Richland. (South Carolina Act of March 12, 1785.)
The first group of settlers in Richland County settled on Mill Creek below the Bluff Road. George HAIG, as deputy surveyor, certified a tract of land containing 450 acres on January 6, 1741, for Philip RAIFORD; and three days later, for the same person, a tract of 300 acres adjoining the first. According to Green in his book, A HISTORY OF RICHLAND COUNTY, on page 27, the creek that ran through Philip's property was called Raiford's Creek up until the American Revolution; afterwards it became known as Mill Creek, because William HAY had built a mill on it shortly before 1750.
John PEARSON migrated here shortly after Philip and married Philip's daughter, Mary RAIFORD. Their son, John PEARSON, Jr. born May 30, 1743, was possibly the first white child born within the limits of Richland County.
