Marriage of Geraldine Kammer
Posted: 10 Jun 2002
Surnames: KAMMER, DUNN
Augusta Chronicle, 4-10-1924, page 5B-Bamberg News Notes
Bamberg, SC, April 9 - Of interest to many friends in Bamberg, Barnwell and other counties throughout this state and in Georgia was the marriage Tuesday afternoon of Isaac Newton Dunn, of Bamberg, and Miss Geraldine Kammer, of Blackville. The ceremony was performed at 3:30 o'clock at the home of Mrs ET Spigener in Denmark, the Rev JB Caston, of Bamberg officiating. Only a few relatives and friends were present.
Following the ceremony, Mr and Mrs Spigener tendered an informal and brief reception to the bridal party, during which cordial good wishes were extended and light refreshments were served.
Mr and Mrs Dunn are now touring northern cities of interest. Upon their return to Bamberg they will be at home on Church street.
The bride is the attractive daughter of Mr and Mrs JC Kammer, of Blackville, and by her sweet disposition and winsome manners has scores of friends in this section of the state. For several years she held a position in one of the local dry goods stores and her many friends in Bamberg are delighted to know that she will become a permanent resident here.
Mr Dunn is one of Bambergs leading business men. For many years he has been the efficient superintendent of the Santee mills, and for the past two years has been a member of the city council.

General Notes: Husband - Colonel Cicero Decatur McCUTCHEN, CSA

"Cicero Decature McCutchen was born in Hall County, Georgia on the date you show. He married Miss Frances Cornelia Kelly, daughter of Thomas and Phebe Kelly formerly of Wilkes County, North Carolina where Frances was born February 1834. They resided in the City of Dalton where he practiced law when the war began. He raised a company for cavalry service which was given the designation of Company F, 12th Georgia Cavalry. He was Captain of the company. There were not enough companies to form a regiment and their designation was changed to 23rd Battalion GA Cavalry, "Georgia Dragoons" on September 20, 1862. By January 5th, 1863 the battalion had recruited enough men to reach regimental strength at which time they were re-organized as the 4th Regiment (Avery's) Georgia Volunteer Cavalry, which they remained throughout the war. I have not found any record that shows him elevated to the rank of colonel. I believe this was an honorary title given to him after the war. [Bruce Howard]

"C. D. McCUTCHEN, son of B. R. McCUTCHEN, was for eight years judge of the Cherokee Circuit." (History of Walker County, page 262). He was Colonel of the 4th Georgia Cavalry in the War between the States.

During the War Between the States, Cicero was a Ward Master in a Confederate hospital.

In 1863, C. D. McCutchen was elected State senator for district 43, Murray, Whitfield, and Gordon counties. [the Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia, Wednesday, November 25, 1863, Page 4]

Robert
I am not a descendant of any of the Kemp family - I do Civil War research and am looking for Thomas' and his brother John R.'s information for that purpose.
It's funny, you say he [Thomas Michael KEMP] married Elizabeth Raiford. His brother John R., who also fought in the war, married Julia C. Raiford in Mississippi. They later moved back to Hickman Co., Kentucky, where they are buried. Don

John R. KEMP, son of W. T. KEMP is age 16 in the 1860 census of Clinton, Hickman County, Kentucky.

John's older brother, Thomas Michael KEMP, was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama in May 1865 and soon after married Elizabeth "Bessie B." RAIFORD, daughter of Thomas Woodward RAIFORD and Sarah Caroline BARBEE of Marshall County, Mississippi. Five years later, on 26 October 1870 , John married Bessie B.'s younger sister, Julia Caroline RAIFORD.

"There are very few letters from Kemp during this period. In September 1918 he wrote from the Personnel Office about the family's move to Tennessee, one of his articles being published in Modern Philology, and not anticipating being sent overseas. And, in a letter dated "Wednesday," he wrote to his brother Miles concerning his (the former's) dilemma of accepting a National Guard comission as opposed to a National Army comission. In addition, there are three letters, 1948-1953, from Kemp to his mother, including some mention of his work as a philologist."

Kemp Malone
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kemp Malone (Minter, Mississippi , March 14, 1889 -October 13, 1971 ) was a prolific medievalist, etymologist, philologist, and specialist in Chaucer who was lecturer and then professor of English Literature at Johns Hopkins University from 1924 to 1956.
Born in an academic family, Kemp Malone graduated from Emory College as it then was in 1907, with the ambition of mastering all the languages that impinged upon the development of Middle English. He spent several years in Germany, Denmark and Iceland. When World War I broke out he served two years in the United States Army and was discharged with the rank of Captain.
Malone served as President of the Modern Language Association, and other philological associations (see link) and was etymology editor of the American College Dictionary, 1947. He resisted the views of Old English poetry as products of a purely oral tradition . He contended that we must look to poets' individual elaboration of traditional structures: "A given poet was reckoned worthy if he handled with skill the stuff of which, by convention, poems must be made" (Malone, "The old tradition: poetic form" in A Literary History of England, Albert C. Baugh, editor, p. 31)
His interests ranged from 10th century manuscripts to the etymology of contemporary comic strip names. American speech, the English language, the historical Arthur (his suggestion was the Roman dux Lucius Artorius Castus ), Caedmon and Beowulf (he edited a facsimile of the Thorkelin transcripts, 1951), Deor - all were subjects among his hundreds of publications. He edited and translated a large corpus of medieval poetry: Widsith from the Exeter Book (1936). A sample of his production is Ten Old English Poems put into Modern English alliterative verse, The Johns Hopkins Press; Baltimore 1941
His library, given to Emory University, carries his name as a memorial. His papers (30 document boxes) were deposited in 1983 at Johns Hopkins University (Ms 129).

Between 1917 and 1919 during the First World War he became a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He became best known for his multi-volume biography of Thomas Jefferson for which he earned the 1975 Pulitzer Prize. Malone Brothers Letters 1917-1919
Physical Characteristics: This collection consists of 30 items.
"The majority of this correspondence, 1917-1919, is from Dumas, Kemp, and Miles S. Malone to their mother, Lilian (Kemp) Malone, and pertains to their military service during World War I. In addition to the sixteen letters to their mother, there are three to their father, John W. Malone, three amongst themselves, and one to Sarah Heath Malone. There are also four letters, 1926-1953, of Kemp Malone while a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins University. This correspondence complements a group of letters found in accession #10481.
Letters from Dumas arrived from the Marine Barracks in such places as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Paris Island, South Carolina, and Quantico, Virginia. During this first year, Dumas wrote of his transfer to Company 3 Signal Battalion and learning the "signaling game," his training schedules, seeing a dreadnought in the harbor, his belief that his sister, Lillian, should be sent to Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and his first drill with rifles. There were few letters written by him in 1918, but he did mention the worst of training being over, receiving his "greens," and being squad leader of some 50 men. Following a visit home, Dumas wrote an interesting letter on January 2, 1919, discussing the rest of his holiday in Lynchburg, Virginia and New York City. In Lynchburg, he visited Randolph-Macon, which he referred to as "a delightful place," and spent time with Dr. Webb and his family. The excitement over his trip to New York shows in his discussion of touring and talking with his brother Kemp and his friend Henry [Johnson] Toombs, who later became a renowned architect. He mentioned seeing the sites with "Henry pointing out a thousand small points of architectural beauty..." In the spring of that year, Dumas described a brief period of leave in Philadelphia and again wrote his belief of Randolph-Macon Woman's College being the best place for Lilian."

DUMAS MALONE: JEFFERSON BIOGRAPHER
by Madeline McMurdo Whitmore
Extracted from http://www.monticello-assoc.org/articles/malone.html:
"Dr. Dumas Malone is Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation Biographer- in-Residence and professor emeritus of history at the University of Virginia. He was born January 10, 1892, in Coldwater, Mississippi. Malone received his bachelor of arts degree from Emory College in 1910 and his bachelor of divinity from Yale University in 1916 where he also received his master of arts in 1921 and his doctorate in 1923. He was instructor in history at Yale from 1919 to 1923, associate professor of history at the University of Virginia from 1923 to 1926, and professor from 1926 to 1929. Dr. Malone was at one time visiting professor of history at Yale and was professor of history at Columbia for fourteen years. Since 1959 he has been back at the University of Virginia. He was professor there until his retirement in 1962; he now has an office in Alderman Library, University of Virginia, which he considers his professional home.
Dumas Malone was for seven years director of the Harvard University Press. He was a distinguished editor of The Dictionary of American Biography. He has also contributed to Harpers, Atlantic Monthly, Virginia Quarterly Review and American Scholar. In 1975 Dumas Malone, at the age of 83, won the Pulitzer Prize in history for his first five volumes of Jefferson and His Time. Mr. Malone, expressing his surprise when he learned of his award, said: "You know as a rule with these series books they won't give the Pulitzer to you until you've finished and I've still got one to go, so I didn't really expect it." Malone is presently working on the sixth and final book in the series which he says will concern Jefferson's life in retirement during which time he established the University of Virginia. "This last book will be much more of a biography," he said, "and not so much concerned with public affairs."
Mr. Malone, who prefers to call himself a historian, not a biographer, has spent almost thirty years of his professional life in Charlottesville with the University of Virginia. His desire to write a comprehensive life of Jefferson dates from his early years as a professor at the University, where they speak of the Father of the University as though he were in the next room. He explained that he got sidetracked along the way and published his first volume in 1948 while teaching at Columbia."

Malone Brothers Letters 1917-1919
Physical Characteristics: This collection consists of 30 items.
"As a member of the American Expeditionary Forces, Miles was sent to France and Germany after being trained in the Fourth Officers Training Camp at Camp Sevier, South Carolina, and Camp Gordon, Atlanta, Georgia. It is obvious from his letters that he was proud to serve his country, and, on seeing the troops bound for the front in July 1918, he referred to them as happy and cheering, exhibiting what he describes as the "spirit of the U.S. Army." By October 1918 he was bound for Europe to do some "real soldering"; the American ships were cheered along their route upon their arrival in France. He described the countryside of France as he saw it from the sea, and gave his impression of the people after landing. By December he was a member of one of the "American crack regiments on the field" in Germany, and told of their arrival by marching through northern France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and parts of Germany, and described the countryside and the people. An interesting letter of January 18, 1919 provides a lengthy description of a parade in which the colors of the 23rd Infantry were decorated by the French in honor of the regiment's conduct at the Battle of Soissons. In February he wrote of having comfortable surroundings in the home of a German couple, traveling to Neuweid to a football game between the 1st and 2nd Divisions, and the rank of command in his regiment. A letter in April from Pleckhausen, Germany contains a description of the countryside and a tale of his patrol into the neutral zone. By this time he is looking forward to going home and receiving a "great welcome" from the American public, as they are anticipating peace in May."

After Thomas was paroled, he was probably making his way from Gainesville, Alabama back home to Kentucky when he reached Marshall County, Mississippi, a little southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, where he met and married Elizabeth "Bessie B." RAIFORD, daughter of Thomas Woodward RAIFORD and Sarah Caroline BARBEE, about 1865. Five years later, Michael's younger brother, John R. KEMP, would married Bessie B.'s younger sister, Julia Caroline RAIFORD.
