General Notes: Husband -
John RICE was born in 1809 in Georgia. His parents have not been discovered. His age and place of birth is consistent in censuses from 1850 to 1880. His marriage record lists him as John H. RICE. The 1860 census lists him as "J. D." RICE. The 1880 census records both his parents were born in Virginia. Curiously, John H.'s son John Wesley Rice's 1880 and 1900 census records lists his father as born in Virginia.

Rode up to the public squre or what ought to be one & could see no sigh of a hotel. Made inquiry & ascertained the Judge STEWART, whom I had just passed would accommodate me went and found pleasant quarters.

Capt. Sterling Turner's Company of Volunteers on Horseback was recruited from among his neighbors in the Cloud's Creek and Mine Creek region of northern Edgefield (currently Saluda Co SC). While returning from a raid in Saxegotha/Lexington, he and around 30 members of his company camped near a partially completed log cabin (called "Carter's House") on a tributary of Cloud's Creek. On 7 Nov 1781, they were surrounded and outnumbered by Loyalist militia forces under the command of Col. William ("Bloody Bill") Cunningham, who demanded unconditional surrender. Some members of Turner's company attempted to return fire. With only two exceptions, all were either killed in battle or executed after surrendering. An incomplete muster roll for this company can be reconstructed from extant service records and pension applications.
Men present at the Cloud's Creek massacre: Capt. Sterling TURNER, Bartlett BLEDSOE (survived and escaped), Berryman BLEDSOE, widow Emilia; John BLEDSOE; James BUTLER, Sr., widow Mary SIMPSON; James BUTLER, Jr.; Nathaniel CORLEY; Zachariah DAVIS, widow Christiana; Burdett ESKRIDGE/ETHRIDGE, widow Hannah; Peter FOY, widow Hamutel; Matthew JONES; Gideon NICHOLSON; 2nd Lt. William SISSON, widow Lydia; Smallwood SMITH, widow Elizabeth Marable JONES; Hendley WEBB (taken prisoner, released); Burrows WHITTLE.
Other members of Capt. Sterling Turner's company who had completed their tour of duty, enlisted in a different company, or were otherwise not present at Cloud's Creek: Abner CORLEY; Zacheus CORLEY; Robert DAVIS; Thomas DAVIS; John DOUGLAS; James EIDSON; Daniel JONES; Joseph NUNN; Amos RICHARDSON; Frederick SISSON; John SMITH; Hezekiah WATSON.

General Notes: Husband -
There are two Llewellin Williamson THREEWITS, one, who died in 1814, the husband of Catherine DANIEL and son of Llewellin THREEWITS and Eleanor FITZPATRICK; the other the son of Joel and Lucretia THREEWITS. "Llewellen" is spelled several different ways.
Llewellen Williamson THREEWITS is named in the 1818 Will of his father, Joel THREEWITS. He later married Josephine Love RIVERS of James Island, Charleston, South Carolina on 21 February 1839. Curiously, a marriage record, appearing to be the same couple, exists in Lowndes County, Alabama showing Lewellen W. THREEWITS marrying Josephine RIVES on Feb 21, 1839 MOODY, Francis W. MG, recorded in Book 1, page 257.
His sister Emma E. THREEWITS married James Croskeys RIVERS of James Island on March 7, 1839, only two weeks after Llewellin married Josephine.
In the South Carolina 1840 federal census, "Lew Allen" (sic, Llewellin) THREEWITS is named in the Lexington District, Series: M704 Roll: 513 Page 119, one male 30-40 and one female 15-20.
1850 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Richland District; Series: M432 Roll: 858 Page 87, shows "Lewis W." (Llewellin Williamson) THREEWITS, living alone.
General Notes: Wife -
"Llewellyn Williamson Threewits, b. 1815, married Josephine Love Rivers (13 February 1821 - 19 May 1843) on 21 February 1839. She was the daughter of William Croskeys Rivers and Mary Hearn Freer of James Island, Charleston SC. The gravestone of Josephine Love Threewits was the only marker legible in the family graveyard on the plantation of Maj. John Threewits as of the early 20th century (although the year of death was misread as 1813, creating some generational problems). They had two children, John Rivers Threewits (b. 19 September 1841) and Josephine Love Threewits (b. 24 June 1843), but the children may not have survived. Lewis W. Threewits was the sole member of his Richland County household in 1850. He was employed as an overseer for the plantation of Wade Hampton Jr." (Harriet Imrey, http://www.palmettoroots.org/Family_Threewits.html)
"A tombstone found in a plowed field behind the field in which the old dwelling of Major John THREEWITS stands we found a piece of a tombstone sticking out of the ground near the edge of woods. We prodded about into the soft dirt with a rod until we struck the other piece of the tombstone and dug it up. Putting the two pieces of stone together we read the following inscription: "Sacred to the memory of Josephine Love Threewits consort of Lewellyn W Threewits who departed this life May 19th 1813 aged 22 years (months broken off) and 6 days" (NOTE: Current information is that the tombstone of Josephine Love THREEWITZ was misread as 1813 and instead 1843. This coincides with Llewelyn Williamson THREEWITS birth in 1815. Josephine LOVE and Josephine Love RiversTHREEWITS are the samr person. See Harriet Imrey's comments above.)

"My grandfather, Charles Duke STANLEY, was only fifteen years old when he joined the 17th Alabama Regiment; was in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain and the Battle of Atlanta, where he had one of his fingers shot off.
He devoted his entire life to propagating the Methodist Christian faith, supported two missionaries in China and Japan for 35 years, preached to the prisons every Sunday afternoon, was Trustee and one of the founders of the Oliver Gospel Mission here in Columbia, South Carolina (dedicated to caring for the city's homeless and destitute). Elected not to join any social organization during his lifetime.
Mother said that the fervor of the grand Stanley's became so intense that Grandmother Julia Phillips STANLEY was carried away and began "speaking in tongues:" at certain church meetings. One month Mother counted the meetings she and my Aunt Lily attended: thirty-one meetings in thirty days.
When the Stanley wealth evaporated early in the Great Depression, the constant obsession faded into thin air. After that, there was a terrible, enervating, long struggle to gain a foothold again. My wonderful mother was the only one who was able to save the Stanley family. A real powerhouse descended from French, Scots, and English worthy ancestors." (Marian Stanley )

'The Capitol of All this Country' Royal Oaks, one of the oldest manor houses in Centreville, lies in pieces waiting to be rebuilt.
By Cheryl Repetti/Centre View
September 2, 2005
THERE ARE CONFLICTING stories about who actually built Royal Oaks. According to the great grandchildren of Revolutionary War patriot and statesman Gen. Daniel ROBERDEAU, the General built Royal Oaks for his son James in 1785. Others have said it was an estate of the LANE and TRIPLETT families. Cornelia Peake McDonald wrote in her Civil War-era diary that, "the home once occupied by Col. Simon TRIPLETT - which descended to his son James Lane TRIPLETT, and from him to the ROBERDEAU family, has always been called Royal Oaks. Tradition claims that when one of these oaks dies a member of the TRIPLETT family dies, and coincidence has often corroborated the saying."
Norman Baker's extensive review of land records tells another story, however. Baker concluded that Newton Keene built the house for his family sometime between 1765 and 1770. If this date is correct, then Royal Oaks was built around the same time as Mount Gilead and is the one other structure to survive from the days when Centreville was Newgate. Or it would be, if it could be restored.
GEN. ROBERDEAU may not have built Royal Oaks, but James ROBERDEAU and his family did reside there. The Roberdeau's story illustrates the important ties Centreville then had to Alexandria and points west. It is also a poignant account of family life in the early 19th century.
James ROBERDEAU was born in Alexandria and grew up in Winchester. In 1818 he married Mildred Lancaster DENNY and thus came to own Royal Oaks (Mildred had inherited the estate from her father). Like many large farms in Truro Parish, Royal Oaks used slave labor during this period. The 1820 census indicates that there were seven slaves and one free 'colored' man included in the Royal Oaks household.
James and Mildred had three children in as many years but only one child survived to adulthood. Mildred died in 1821. Sometime before then she had written to Dr. Stabler, a well known apothecary in Alexandria (the shop is now a museum in Old Town), that she was "afflicted - with a paralytick [sic] stroke" and wished to undergo the latest in medical treatments, electrical shock. Mildred was laid to rest in the northwest corner behind the Royal Oaks house.
James then married Martha Lane TRIPLETT in 1822. Together they had seven children, four of whom survived. James died in 1832 at the age of 47. He was buried beside Mildred on the Royal Oaks grounds. Martha lived a long life and was buried at the Fairfax Court House.
Of the five surviving Roberdeau children, only two remained in Centreville. The eldest daughter, Jane, married Walter POWELL. They bought Royal Oaks shortly after they were married in 1841 and sold the property to the Whaley family in 1845."

IN MEMORY OF CAPT. JACOB TALLY
Born May 15, 1784, Died April 6, 1842, "Sorrow not, even as others have no hope." Who died suddenly the 6th of April 1842, aged 57 years, 10 months and 21 days. By his industry and economy, he procured a patrimoney for his descendants sufficient for all necessary purposes. He was kind and courteous in all the relations of social life. As a patriot, he was never anxious for the prosperity of his country and zealously devoted to the principals contained in the democratic creed of Jefferson. As a Christian he had received the divine ordinance of Baptism, having previously obtained the evidence of faith, that he had passed from death unto life, though he was not exempted from the frailty that is common to human nature. Thess. 4:14. Yet we have hope concerning him that he sleeps in Jesus and that God will bring him with him. "Elizabeth Thomas- (Another Elizabeth) Born about 1776, probably in Pennsylvania. Her husband was Mathias Rofelty Jr., son of Ten Mile Creek Pioneer Mathias Rofelty Sr. During the Revolutionary War "the Rofelty's were living on a tract of land across the Ten mile from Benjamin Strites Mill adjoining Edward Burson's place". The story told by historian and genealogist Howard Leckey is that while Mathias Rofelty Sr. "was away from home, leaving his wife and two grown daughters on the plantation, a war party of Indians came to the Rofelty cabin and attacked the wife and daughters. They "knocked the white women down, scalped them and left them for dead." When Mr. Rofelty returned, he found one daughter dead and his wife and another daughter badly wounded. Mrs. Rofelty survived only a few hours, but the young girl recovered.
The Indians, afterward, calmly went next door and were fed a pot of beans by Mrs. Edward Burson. Mrs. Burson was then left unharmed. The scalped daughter miraculously recovered from her wounds (Sarah Rofelty), made a home with the Edward Burson family, and later married (a man named Haines) and raised a large family. (Source: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania, by Earle Robert Forrest, published by S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1926)
Elizabeth Thomas married Mathias Rofelty Jr. about the year 1794, and moved to Hamilton County, Ohio, Green Township (near Cincinnati). Mathias and Elizabeth had known children Elis, born 1800, Mathias Jr. born 1805, Barbara, Susannah, and Sarah. (The Thomas Trail,, chap. 11, p. 11, Bud Thomas)

Howard Rollins, Dog Expert, Dies
Chicago, Ill. - Howard Rollins, 54, of Sanford, Fla., a retired Navy lieutenant commander and an international dog show exhibitor, died wednesday in the United States Naval Hospital at Great Lakes of burns suffered Sunday in a fire. Rollins was burned when a bottle gas stove exploded in his mobile camper parked here. His wife, Aileen [*], told Lake County Coroner Robert H. Bazcox that her husband suffered most of the burns when he rescued one of their five dogs. The other four escaped without injury. Rollins, who was in Chicago for the International Kennel Club's dog show in the International Amphitheater, apparently attempted to light the stove while preparing breakfast, and the gas unit exploded. Mrs. Rollins left Wednesday for Sanford to arrange funeral services. [The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, Texas, Friday, April 12, 1963, Section 3, Page 8]
[*]"Aileen" apparently a misspelling of Elaine, Doris Terry's middle name.]
Howard T. Rollins' obituary was published in the Daily Press on April 13, 1963, p. 9. [Newport News Public Library System, Daily Press Obituary Index]
