General Notes: Wife - Carmen Kathryn SWANSON

Carmen SWANSON is listed with her parents "Eleck" and Kate Swanson in the 1920 Census for Harrison County, Mississippi. On the census, it appears her name was entered as "Carmel", age 13, and indicates she was born in Mississippi. She had always said that she was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. In response to an request for a birth certificate to apply for social security benefits, on October 19, 1972, the Bureau of Vital statistics, Department of Health, City of New Orleans, sent the following letter:

"TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
This is to certify that a search of our indexes for the years 1905-1907 fails to reveal the birth of Carmen Catherine SWANSON allegedly born in New Orleans, Louisiana on November 27, 1906. Mother: Catherine ROWAN. Father: Alex SWANSON." Signed: Lucile G. Penouilh, Deputy Registrar.

Carmen's Certificate of Baptism reads "Sts. Peter and Paul Church, New Orleans, Louisiana This is to Certify That Carmen Catherine Child of Alex SWANSON and Catherine ROWAN Born in New Orleans on the 27th day of November 1906 was Baptized on the 16th day of December 1906 According to the Rite of the Roman Catholic Church by the Rev. M. JANANA the Sponsors being J. HEMELT and Viola ROWAN as appears from the Baptismal Register of this Church Date Dec 12, 1952 Volume 4 Page 445 No. 308 (signed) Chas L. Carroll Pastor". This certificate was undoubtedly used to verify her age for social security purposes. The letter above and this certificate are stapled together.

Carmen SWANSON signed her name several different ways as listed on various documents. In addition to Carmen Kathryn, she also used Carmen Katherine, Carmen Catherine, and Carmen K. and Carmen S.

Carmen was raised in Kiln, Hancock County, Mississippi. She and her younger brother Michael are listed in the sixth and seventh grade rolls for Kiln Consolodated High School, 1918-1919, Student Enrollment, page 34.

Carmen, age 16, was a witness to the marriage of her sister Agnes SWANSON to Rennis L. BERNARD on June 30, 1923 in the Church of the Annunciation, Kiln, Mississippi.

A year later at 17, Carmen married Alexander B. JACKSON in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi, 12 June 1924. This marriage did not work, and it was never discussed in her extended family. Carmen's sister, Agnes Bernard and family, lived in Georgia and operated Waynesville Naval Stores about 18 miles west of Brunswick, Georgia. This record may be Carmen, moved to be near her older sister. The given brith in Georgia for her and her parents may be a census error.

Carmen married second James Ulmer DANIELL on 16 January 1937 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "Jimmy" was the love of her life. They made their home in Miami, Florida where they raised two sons, Robert Louis and Walter Earl.

Carmen worked in the Corpus Christi Elementary School cafeteria while her sons were enrolled there. She was later employed by Jackson Memorial Hospital. On September 15, 1965, Carmen was the honored guest at her retirement party held in Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Florida, where she was a Food Service Supervisor in Cafeteria No. 1. She had been employed by the hospital since 1957, and at the time of her retirement supervised over 25 employees.

Soon after her retirement, Jimmy retired from the U.S. Post Office. They moved to Waynesville, Georgia to be with her sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Rennis BERNARD. A few years later, they moved again, to Pensacola, Florida to be near their son Earl and family who were stationed at NAS Pensacola.

After Jimmy died in 1969, Carmen resided several more years in Pensacola, later moved to Virginia with Earl and his family and in 1976 moved to Panama City, Florida to be with her son Robert and his family who were stationed at Tyndall Air Force Base.

Carmen died in Panama City on 22 September 1986. Her obituary was published in the News-Herald, Panama City, Fla., Sept. 24, 1986, Page 9A:
"Carmen Kathryn DANIELL, 79, of Panama City, died Monday in a local hospital. She was of the Roman Catholic faith and attended St. Dominic's Church. She also retired from Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla., which she had worked for 15 years as food supervisor. James Ulmer and Carmen Swanson DANIELL rest in peace in Palmetto Garden 1, Brunswick Memorial Park, Glynn County, Georgia. Their graves are next to those of Carmen's beloved sister, Agnes and her husband Rennis Louis BERNARD. Carmen and Agnes were not just sisters, they were the closest of friends. "William left a will dated March 3rd and proved November 21, 1752, naming wife, Jane (apparently a second wife, as he mentions also, "daughter-in-law Jane Watkins"), sons William, Daniel, Samuel, Thomas, and Nathaniel (the last three minors committed to the care of Gerard "Boling", and daughters, "Sibbel" Burk, Hannah Reagan, Martha "Boling", Margaret, Anna Rials and Elizabeth Lowe." My son Daniel and his wife Mary ; grandson Richard son of Richard Moxley ; grandson William Payton ; sons Samuel , William and Thomas ; youngest son Daniel exor.

"Westmoreland County Wills Book XVI.
Name: Daniel Moxley 18 May 1774
Wife Mary ; friend Capt. Thomas Chilton ; Mr. William Chilton ; nephew Richard Moxley, Jr. , son of my brother Richard ; nephew Joseph son of my brother Joseph ; to Daniel son of my nephew Joseph the latter being son of my brother Joseph ; to Daniel son of my nephew Richard Moxley, Jr. ; to Richard son of my nephew Richard ; to nephew William son of my brother John ; to William son of my brother John .

General Notes: Husband - Major Robert WYNNE

The chain of events below might identify the son of Robert Wynne and Martha Jefferson referred to in the Turpin Notebooks. It also might identify the Robert Wynne married to Frances who appears in a few different mid 18th century records.
1721 - Robert Wynne of Surry County buys 50 acres that later falls in Brunswick County (Surry Deeds 7, p. 380)
1726 - Robert Wynne of Surry County patents 400 acres on Beaver Pond Creek in Prince George County on the present-day Dinwiddie/Brunswick line (Patent Book 13, p. 42)
1741 - Robert Wynne the Elder and Robert Wynne the Younger of Prince George County sell the 50 acres previously purchased by Robert Wynne of Surry (Brunswick Deeds 2, p. 90)
1742 - Robert Wynne and his wife Frances of Brunswick County sell a 386-acre patent for land in Brunswick County (Brunswick Deeds 2, p. 216)
Robert and Frances Wynne also appear in the Bristol Parish register for the births of their two daughters, Margaret (1741) and Mason (1745). Could this Robert be the son referred to in the Turpin Notebooks? How else to explain the land sequence?
We know that after Martha Jefferson's death her husband Robert Wynne married Mary Phillipson of Brunswick County. The problem is there are so many Roberts and it is very difficult to sort them out. (http://genforum.genealogy.com/wynne/messages/997.html)

Lived in Union, South Carolina at the time of his death in July, 1927. An obituary published 11 July 1927 in the Union, South Carolina newspaper related: "Henry B. JENNINGS...entering Clemson College at an early age, was graduated with honors in 1902 from the Textile Department of the institution at the age of 18, perhaps being the youngest student ever to finish the course. Mr JENNINGS was an untiring worker and a thorough master of details. His rapid rise in the mill industry was due to these two qualities and the further characteristic - loyalty to duty. He believed inhard work, and was successful in inspiring those under him with the same spirit. He was a loyal friend and a man of strict intergrity. His death is a great loss to Union, and the city is in mourning today. Harry B. JENNINGS was President and General Manager of the Union Buffalo Mills Co. and Vice-Presdient of other manufacturing companies in South Carolina." 4309
