Biography of South Carolina Staste Senator Thomas M. RAYSOR. This Biography in posted at http://patsabin.com/lowcountry/raysor.html.
SENATOR THOMAS RAYSOR, "born 23 December 1797, was the son of Michael RAYSOR, Jr. and Eleanor RISHER. A planter, he initially resided in St. Bartholomew Parish. Tax returns for 1824 recorded 1,121 acres and 12 slaves as his property. The 1830 federal census noted 33 slaves as part of his St. Bartholomew household. Sometime before 1841, he moved to Barnwell District.
According to the 1850 census, his real estate in Barnwell was worth $6,000; slave schedules for that year recorded 147 slaves as belonging to him. Writing his will 23 September 1856, he mentioned a plantation (2,730 acres) and other property; an inventory taken 2 February 1858 included 48 slaves and valued his estate at over $20,000.
Public office for RAYSOR began with his service as clerk of the Court of General Sessions and Common Pleas for Colleton District (1822-1833). While in the Senate, he was a member of the committees on engrossed bills (1833), internal improvements (1833), and finance (1833). Locally, he served as inspector of timber for the western division of the Charleston and Hamburg Railroad (1832-1833) and militia captain (c. 1841).
Married twice, Raysor first wed Hannah STOKES, daughter of Peter STOKES and Elizabeth LAWFORD. Six children were born to them: Elizabeth Eleanor (m. John MAY), Thomas , Jr. (1827-1896), Rebecca Caroline (M. William C. MOSS), Peter Andrew, Laura Anne (m. James Daniel ERWIN), and James William. His first wife died 21 February 1841. In May 1844 he married Mary AYER, daughter of Lewis Malone AYER and Sarah NUNNARS and widow of William DICKS. No issue was born to the second union. Survived by his wife and four children, Thomas RAYSOR died 11 January 1858 in Barnwell District." from the Biographical Directory of the South Carolina Senate, 1776-1985, Volume II, by N. Louis Bailey, Mary L. Morgan and Carolyn R. Taylor.
The earliest known ancestors of Senator Thomas RAYSOR's father, Michael RAYSOR, Jr, were first noted in New Bern, North Carolina in the mid 1700's. The Rishers, Fontaines, and Raysors (also spelled Rasher, Raisher, Razor, and Razer in early ) were all present in that area at the time and later migrated to Colleton District, South Carolina.
Michael RAYSOR married Eleanor RISHER around 1795, and Thomas RAYSOR was the second of their seven children. According to Frank W. RAYSOR, family legend has it that Eleanor's parents, Benjamin RISHER and Mary Fontaine RISHER, objected to the marriage because Michael operated a stage coach stop where whiskey was sold. The Raysor Tavern is shown on the 1824 map of the area, on what is now SC 61."

According to Frank Wannamaker Raysor, Thomas' original middle name was Milhouse, his mother's maiden name. His mother died from childbirth, and (according to family legend) Middleton relatives raised Thomas, giving him a new middle name. According to Frank Wannamaker Raysor, he always signed his name, "Thomas M. Raysor". He is buried in Section I, Plot 20, of the Sunnyside Cemetery in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
I have not yet found an Anna or Annie Milhouse in the 1850 Census. I have found an Anna Middleton, 26, in the Charleston census, 1850, working in a shop." (Pat Sabin, Lowcountry SC Families of Gavin and Raysor , http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=psabin6&id=I0024)

       Buried:
       Spouse: Aria KENNEDY (1781-1861)
Marr: 19 May 1799 - Bourbon County, Kentucky

General Notes: Husband -

Samuel TALBOTT, Jr., was born on March 17, 1756, in Fairfax County, Virginia. He married Constantine REGAN or REAGAN, daughter of Michael and Rebecca REAGAN in 1775. Constantine died, perhaps a result of childbirth, the next year.

Samuel then married Mary O'DANIEL after 1777. Over the next 22 years, he and Mary had eight children.
They had moved to Kentucky before February 7, 1791, when his mother wrote her will in which she stated that Samuel was no longer in Fairfax County, Virginia. They had settled in that part of Fayette County which would become Clark County in 1792, and named their homestead "Locust Grove".

The Kentucky Gazette, Lexington, June 22, 1793, published: "Samuel TALBERT, Clark County 12 April 1793, living on the Kentucky River between Boon's Creek and Juit's Creek, found a mare."

The Kentucky Gazette, 19 March 1794, "Samuel TALBOT, living in Clark County near mouth of Boone's Creek, found a mare." [This is about 15 miles southeast of Lexingtonon John Filson's 1793 Map of Kentucky, http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kyfayett/filsons.htm ]

Samuel bought 35 acres in Clark County from Dennis BRADLEY in 1798 (DB 3, p. 180), and another 227 acres from Samuel COMBS in 1817 (DB 13, p. 93).

Among the claims filed in the Public Record Office of London, England, was this item: "Samuel TALBOT, Jr. of Fairfax. Debt with interest due 15 Sept. '98, L3.17.8. Went to Kentucky about ten years ago; had property. Inquire of J. COFFER." (p. 136)

W. H. Perrin's History of Fayette County, Kentucky, includes a biographical sketch of Mrs. Elizabeth FISHER, a descendant of Samuel TALBOTT: "Her maiden name was TALBOTT, and she is a direct descendant of an English Scotch family of the name who came from Virginia to Kentucky at an early day, her great-grandfather, Samuel TALBOTT, settling in Clark County, between the Kentucky River and Boone's Creek. He had one son, Nicholas, whose mother died when he was but a child, and several other children by a second wife." (p. 803) Nicholas was born on November 10, 1776.

Samuel's second wife was Mary O'DANIEL, daughter of John and Elizabeth Moxley O'DANIEL of Fairfax County. When John O'DANIEL died in 1798, his will mentioned his daughter "Mary TALBERT" who was "to have land in Kentucky."

Samuel witnessed the Last Will & Testament of John TILLETT of Bourbon County, Kentucky. In an abstract: Wills: TILLETT, John - Names wife, Jane; sons, James, William, John, Giles; granddaughter, Sarah, daughter of George, deceased; daughters, Nancy COTTEN, Jane REED, Elizabeth BOGGESS, Mary SPENCER, Susanna WARREN. Written 27 Mar 1810. Proved Sep 1812. Witnesses: M. and Samuel TALBOTT, Jas. FORD. (Will Book D, p. 300)

The 1830 Clark County Census, page 89, lists Samuel TALBOTT and family: 1 male and 1 female 70-80 years old, 1 male and 1 female 30-40 years old, 1 female 20-30 years old, 2 males and 1 female 10-15 years old, 1 female 5-10 years old, and 2 females 0-5.

Samuel wrote his will on August 16, 1824, and it was proved on May 27, 1833:
I, Samuel TALBOTT of the County of Clarke and State of Kenty. living in My right Mind and Memory do make My Last Will and Testament in the manner Following

General Notes: Husband -

CONFLICT! Contrary to published information saying that Rev. Joseph REESE's father was Evan and Sarah REES, Harriet Imrey contradicts it saying that Daniel and Mary REESE are his parents. Her explanation of this is in my general notes on Daniel REESE. Interestingly, Joseph has a son Daniel, but no son named Evan? (RLD)

"This Joseph Rees was Rev. Joseph Rees s/o Evan and Sarah Rees. He was born in Kent Co. PA (now DE, the 3 counties of DE were then known as the "three lower counties" of Pennsylvania). His first wife was Ann Reynolds (probably mother of Ephriam as he was the oldest child). Spouses of children, where I know them: Mary: Hargrave Arthur; Joseph: Sarah Howell; Timothy: Elizabeth Howell; Ann: Robert Tucker; John Altum: Mary Howell; Catherine: ____ Wells
In 1759, Joseph was a member of the Fairforest Baptist Church Richland Co. SC. He was the first pastor of the Congaree Baptist Church. He lived 3 miles away near Pincushion Swamp. His plantation "Permacrusian" was located across the river in Richland. The Howell family the 3 sons married into was related to the wife of Jefferson Davis, whose maiden name was Howell. There is info on his ministry in "South Carolina Baptists 1670-1805" by Leah Townsend. Originally published in 1935, it was reprinted by the Gen. Pub. Co. Baltimore. The Charleston Association referred to him as "eminently pious, excellent and useful". (An epitaph of which anyone would be proud.) I do not descend from Joseph, but from Hugh Rees who was in SC with 4 brothers by 1770.
The only clue I have to Sarah's prior husbands is that apparently her last one was named Altum/Altom (from your info, I presume Altom is correct, particularly as I had the son as John Alton, which obviously should be Altom). I have identified the sons-in-law named in the will. No clue on the Raiford who was a witness, but as I said in my original posting, Joseph D. Rees III had a daughter Mary Raiford Rees who married a Garner, so it seems likely he or his father married a Raiford." (Dave Reese,http://genforum.com/cgi-bin/pageload.cgi?carolina::reese::1179.html)
Rev. Joseph REESE served as a chaplin in the Revolutionary War with forces from the Congaree. (Green. "History of Richland County", page 102.) He may have been the third husband of Sarah, his second wife.
The will of Rev. Joseph REESE is filed in Probate Court, Columbia, South Carolina (will book C--Folios 107,108,109) was recorded April 6, 1795; lists wife Sarah (THOMAS) REESE and nine children by his first wife. Rev. REESE died on March 5, 1795 at the age of sixty-three, in Richland County, South Carolina, at his home. He was interred in the family cemetery on his estate, Pincushion (Pennocrucion), about 12 miles east of Columbia, South Carolina, on the Garner Ferry Road. In 1940 this place was owned by Mr. Rawles.

Obituary and Death Notice
SALISBURY -- Colonel (retired) George Doan Rehkopf passed peacefully away Saturday morning in Salisbury, NC, at age 86. Son of Colonel Ned B. Rehkopf (U.S. Military Academy, class of 1902) and maternal grandson of Brigadier General James Brailsford Erwin (USMA 1880), Rehkopf was born at Ft. Leavenworth, KS, on October 19, 1919. As the member of a military family, travel and reassignment were frequent and resulted in five different elementary and three high schools. He received an appointment to West Point and entered in the summer of 1938 as a member of the Class of 1942.
Upon graduation Rehkopf was assigned to the 30th Infantry Division (Old Hickory). By January of 1944 Captain Rehkopf commanded I Company of the 119th Infantry, 30th Division, on its way to England for the invasion of France. The 30th Division was one of the follow-on divisions to the initial beach assault at Omaha Beach. On the 30th of June, Rehkopf was wounded by German artillery fire and evacuated to England. After recuperation, he returned in time for the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded a second time in late February of 1945 during the Roer River crossing. His decorations included the Silver Star for valor and two Purple Hearts.
After the war Rehkopf returned to the states and was assigned to Army Intelligence in the Pentagon. During the latter phase of this assignment, Rehkopf was transferred to the National Security Agency and was commander of a decoding division with over 125 staff. What followed was the somewhat normal series of military schooling, troop assignment, and further Pentagon duty. Delightful assignments in Paris from 1952 to 1955 and Puerto Rico from 1961 to 1964 resulted in pleasant experiences and a much-improved golf game.
After finishing the War College he was assigned as the Commanding Officer of the newly formed 199th Light Infantry Brigade at Fort Benning in 1966. Late that year the 199th shipped to Vietnam with Rehkopf as the Deputy Commander. Upon returning from Vietnam, his final assignment was to the Artillery School at Ft. Sill as Senior Associate Arms Instructor, retiring in January of 1969 to become a stock and commodities broker in Columbus, GA. On reaching age 62 he fully retired to the golf course in order to complete his series of 7 holes-in-one -- all, he claimed, with little or no practice.
At the beginning of his career, on November 27, 1943, he married Helene Louise Nye, daughter of Wilbur S. Nye (USMA 1920). Their first child, a daughter Robin Elleane, was born in September of 1944, while he was overseas. He and Helene also had a son, Edward Nye (USMA 1969) born in July of 1947, and a second daughter, Lynn, born in January 1951. In retirement in Columbus [Georgia], he and Helene were active members of Holy Family Church and enjoyed their life together in Green Island Hills. The serenity and joy of this family life came to an abrupt end in May of 1997 with Helene's passing.
After a period of dispossessing a lifetime's accumulation, he learned the telephone number of a recently widowed high school friend, Frances (Sassy) Ricker. They reconnected by phone and were wed in April of 1999 after which they made their home in Raleigh, NC. He always expressed appreciation and gratitude to Sassy and her family, Frances (Frannie) Whitten and Frederic Arnold of Raleigh, and Victoria Wood of Greenville, SC, for making his last years so enjoyable.
Rehkopf is survived by his wife, Frances Ricker Rehkopf; and three children, Robin S. Rehkopf of Van Nuys, CA, Edward N. Rehkopf of Mount Ulla, NC, and Lynn Doroghazi of St. Louis, MO; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
His remains will be laid to rest next to Helene below the Old Cadet Chapel at West Point. George will always be remembered by his children and grandchildren as an imposing man with a ready smile, a great sense of humor, and a love of life. He will be missed.
Arrangements entrusted to Renaissance Funeral Home of Raleigh, 919-866-1866

General Notes: Husband -

Albert Moore RHETT was a son of James SMITH and Marianna GOUGH. Members of the SMITH family were cousins of the RHETT family whose surname was dying out. Albert was one of six grandsons of Sabina SMITH who had their names changed to RHETT by the South Carolina legislature.

"Albert Moore RHETT (1809-43, (family name changed from SMITH to RHETT in 1837), lawyer, state legislator, and brother of Robert Barnwell RHETT, was graduated from South Carolina college, ca. 1827. RHETT studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1834. Elected to the South Carolina House, 1834-37, 1840-43, Albert RHETT was a leader in that body and part of the RHETT-ELMORE political clique feared and disliked by HAMMOND, among others. RHETT died of yellow fever in Charleston at the age of 34." (Secret and Sacred: The Diaries of James Henry Hammond, a Southern Slaveholder, By James Henry Hammond, Carol K. "Arthur Barnwell, who acquired the property from Gadsden's family in 1885, re-modeled the interior, installing eight Italian marble mantelpieces from England and parquetry floors of three kinds of wood, copied from European palaces. It is said the carpenter, Noisette, took eight years to put in the floors. Barnwell sold the property in 1902 to Robert Goodwyn Rhett, who was Mayor of Charleston, president of the Peoples Bank (which built the Peoples Building) and one of the developers of North Charleston. During Rhett's ownership, William Howard Taft, U.S. President and Chief Justice, was several times a weekend guest. Tradition says that it was during the Rhetts' residence here that their butler, William Deas, invented she-crab soup.
