General Notes: Husband - Colonel Leonidas A. JORDAN, CSA

"Emily Epps (SANFORD) JORDAN was the wife of Benj. Smith JORDAN of Milledgeville who died ca. 1856. Leonidas JORDAN was their son. His mother lived with Leonidas until her death and never remarried. They lived in Lee County, Georgia (Palmeria) and had a home in Macon, but as I recall, they always participated in the census from Lee County, close to Columbus. If you recall, Benj. Smith JORDAN was the cousin that Warren JOURDAN felt was responsible for his bankruptcy.
The exact relationship is this: Benj. Smith JORDAN is the grandson of George JOURDAN and his second wife, Hannah SMITH, through Hezekiah JOURDAN, who died ca 1812, will in Morgan Co Ga., and Greenville Co. Va. Warren JOURDAN is the grandson of the same George JOURDAN, by his first wife, Patience WARREN, through their son, Benj. JOURDAN, who was killed by Indians ca. 1786 in Jackson CO. Ga." (Tuck Wilson)
Benjamin and Emily had one child: Col. Leonidas JORDAN, whose first wife was the great love of his life and was a great beauty beloved by all who knew her. You list her as Julia COLQUITT, which may be so, although I, again, do not have my notes here in Cambridge to corroborate that fact ... although, that does sound feasible. His first wife died relatively young, I think, and they had no children -- of, if they did have children, they died without record excepting the possibility of her dying during childbirth, to the best of current knowledge. They certainly had no child live beyond infancy, and I have never heard of any child (excepting the possible childbirth one mentioned above). Leonidas (Lee) lived as a wealthy elder gentleman until late in life when he married for a second time, Ilah DUNLAP of Maconga (Macon, Georgia) a young lady who is said by some wags to have been 18 when he married her (he being in his 70s or 80s at the time), but I have heard more authoritatively that she was at least 20 when they wed. Whatever, she was the ultimate gold-digger and within only a few years Lee passed away leaving her a very rich young widow, indeed. VERY RICH. Lee is said to be one of only two southerners post-war who could write a check for a million dollars and have it honored. Ilah turned over Lee's house to her brother as his home and set him up very well, then gave one of Lee's plantations to another sister, while keeping his Albany plantation for her own hunting preserve, then took off for Atlanta where she married a rich attorney and laid siege to Atlanta society. At her death, in Germany, I believe, while at the baths there, what was not stolen by a young cousin (later tried for the murder of his wife, even later blown up and burned to death in an assassination at his Palm Beach house -- Lee's money again), went to the University of Georgia and funded the current library there (her specific bequest, even to the design and style). (Tuck Wilson)

General Notes: Wife - Julia Flournoy HURT

The obituary of Julia Flournoy HURT was published in the Union Recorder, Milledgeville, Georgia, Jan. 5, 1892, page 6:
"Death of Mrs. Lee Jordan
Mrs. Lee JORDAN died very suddenly at 8 o'clock Wednesday night at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Fannie HURT, in Wynnton, a suburb of Columbus. She was out at church on Sunday and apparently well on Monday. She had an attack of grip, with symptoms of pneumonia, and though confined to her room, she was not considered dangerously ill. A few seconds previous to her death she was conversing rationally with her physician, Dr. HURT, who had been called, then turned over on her side and in a moment was dead.
Her sudden death was a terrible shock to those in the room and for some minutes it could scarcely be realized.
Mrs. JORDAN was a remarkable woman and was universally popular, being a great favorite in society. She married in 1861 Colonel Peyton COLQUITT, a brother of Senator COLQUITT, who was killed in the battle of Chickamauga. Colonel COLQUITT was at one time editor of The Columbus Enquirer. In 1868 she married Colonel Lee JORDAN, a wealthy planter, who survives her and is prostrated by the suddenness of the terrible blow. She was born near Wynnton, in 1846. She was the only daughter of Mrs. Fanny HURT and Joel Early HURT, a prominent citizen of Columbus.
Mrs. JORDAN's social career has been very brilliant. She was a great beauty and had throngs of admirers wherever she went. Just after the war, and in her widowhood, she visited Paris, and was a great favorite at the French court.
Many friends in this city sympathize with Mr. JORDAN in his sad loss."

"JUDGE, THOMAS JAMES, lawyer, was born November 1, 1815, in Richland District, S. C., and four years later, came with his parents to Alabama, and settled in Butler County. His early schooling was meager, and when he was fifteen years old, he entered a printing office in Montgomery. After a year in the printing office, he became clerk in a dry goods store in Montgomery. In 1834, he established a newspaper in Greenville and edited it about a year. He volunteered in the Creek War; served three months; and in 1837 moved to Hayneville, where he read law in the office of John S. Hunter and Nathan Cook. He began to practice law in Hayneville the next year; was appointed district solicitor by Gov. Fitzpatrick in 1843; and was defeated in the fall election for that office. He was elected to the State legislature from Lowndes County in 1844, and was reelected the following year; was sent to the State senate from Lowndes and Butler Counties, in 1847, and continued to serve in that body until 1850, when he resigned in order to move to Montgomery County. In the same year, he was a delegate to the Nashville convention. He formed a law partnership in Montgomery with T. H. Watts and J. F. Jackson; represented Montgomery County in the legislature in 1853; was an unsuccessful candidate for congress against Hon. J. F. Dowdell of Chambers County in 1857; and was defeated in the election to congress two years later by Mr. Clopton, of Macon County. In 1860, he supported Breckenridge for president, and upon the secession of Alabama was sent by Gov. Moore in February, 1861, as a commissioner from the state to the government of the United States at Washington, to negotiate with that government in reference to the forts, arsenals and customhouses in Alabama, and the public debt of the United States, as well as to the future relations of the state with the U. S. government. He immediately went to Washington to fulfill his mission, but President Buchanan refused to receive him in any other character than that of a distinguished citizen of Alabama, and his mission was fruitless.
When the War of Secession began, Col. Judge volunteered as a private, and served a short time at Pensacola early in 1861. Soon after leaving Pensacola, he was appointed by President Davis as colonel of the Fourteenth Alabama regiment which was organized and mustered into service at Auburn. He went with his regiment to Virginia, but in April, 1862, was so seriously injured by a railroad collision as to be forced to resign his command. He also suffered from rheumatism contracted by severe exposure on the peninsula of Virginia. Soon after his resignation, President Davis tendered him the position of presiding judge of a military court in the army of Virginia, with the rank of a colonel of cavalry. He declined that appointment, principally on account of his rheumatism, as it would subject him to further exposure in the cold climate of northern Virginia. President Davis then tendered him the same appointment to serve with the army in Mobile and Col. Judge accepted, and served in the court until the close of the war. Upon the reorganization of the State government in 1865, he was elected one of the judges of the supreme court, and held that position until superseded by the reconstruction measures of congress. After that time, he turned his attention to the practice of law in Montgomery and Greenville. He was a Whig. Married: to Miss Graves, a sister of Hon. Peyton T. Graves, of Lowndes County. Last residence: Montgomery."

"Thomas J. JUDGE was a member of the Butler County Bar, and represented his county in the Legislature. He was generally recognized as standing at the head of the legal profession in the State, and was the candidate of the Whig party for Congress against Judge David CLOPTON, the Democratic nominee. This election is conceded to have been the most hotly contested election ever known in Alabama, and resulted in the defeat of the Whig candidate by a small majority. Thomas JUDGE was three times elected to the Supreme Court Bench, which position he held with the universal confidence of the people at the time of his death. His opinions delivered from the Supreme Bench, are regarded by the legal profession as clear, logical and convincing." Obituary: Katharine I. French, a homemaker and volunteer, died of cancer Wednesday at Brightwood retirement community in Lutherville. She was 84. Born Katharine Cary Iglehart in Baltimore, she was the granddaughter of Jacob A. Ulman, who was a co-founder of the Maryland Hunt Cup in 1894. Her father, Joseph A.W. Iglehart, had been the principle investor and chairman of the board of the Orioles. She was raised in the 1400 block of Park Ave., where one of her childhood friends was Frances Scott Fitzgerald, daughter of writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Mrs. French attended Bryn Mawr School and graduated in 1938 from the Westover School in Middlebury, Conn. She attended Goucher College from 1939 to 1941, when she left to go to work for Bendix Radio. A technically minded individual, Mrs. French helped construct the first ground control approach radio system used by aircraft, family members said. After the war, Mrs. French, who was known as "Kitsy," worked for WAAM-TV -- now WJZ -- as traffic manager scheduling commercials. She was married in 1950 to G. Ross French, now retired as vice president of sales for National Wire Products Corp. Mr. French survives her. The couple lived in Lutherville for years before moving to the retirement community in 1996. Mrs. French was a longtime volunteer at Children's Hospital and a member of the Mount Vernon Club. She enjoyed working on her computer, building dollhouses, and compiling her family genealogy. She liked playing golf and wintering at a second home she and her husband had in Delray Beach, Fla. She was a former communicant of Memorial Episcopal Church in Bolton Hill, and was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 232 St. Thomas Lane, Owings Mills, where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. June 25. General Notes: Husband - INGRAM

INGRAM is the married surname of Mary Jane DANIEL as given in Jane D. YOUNG's 1849 Will.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Jane YOUNG

Mary Jane YOUNG was a daughter of Lovick YOUNG and Jane D. DANIEL. She is believed to be the the female, under 10, in the 1820 census, and the female 15-20 in the 1830 census.

She is named as Mary Jane INGRAM, mother of Sarah A. INGRAM, in her mother's 1849 Will: "It is my will and desire, That if any of the Legatees before named should die without leaving a lawful heir, that the property hereinbefore given them, and not absolutely devised & bequeathed, with the increase, be eaqually divided among the survivors, & in case of the death of more than one, the child or children of a deceased child to take, per stirpes, the share to which their parents would be entitled, if alive. This clause refers alone to those of my children named above, and not to my grand daughter Sarah A. INGRAM. Although I believe it to be my duty to give most of my property to those of my children who have been with me during my widowhood, and fromwhon I hope & expect to receive consolation, support & protection in the evening of my life & in my declining years - I am bound by the ties of a Mother's love to give my daughter Mary Jane INGRUM the property hereinbefore bequeathed to her, as a token of a Mother's affection. To my grandaughter Sarah Ann INGRUM I have bequeathed no part of my estate not on account of a want of regard and affection but because the property which she & her Mother have received from her Grand Father's Estate more than equals in value, the portions of my other children."

Mary Jane's husband was not named.

POSSIBLE? Polly = Mary, b. abt 1812. The NC is questionable. Record indexed as Cordner INGRAM. Lancaster borders Chester and York to the east and is west of Chesterfield counties.

"James Willis Cantey, still a youth, was placed by his father in the store of Colonel Morgan Brown, of Sandersville, Ga., remaining there until the declaration of war in 1812, when he joined a corps of volunteer Cavalry under Captain John Irwin, son of Gov. Irwin. His father objected to his joining the Army, unless he could get an appointment on the northern frontier, then the scene of active operation. Failing in this he went with his company of volunteers into the Creek War, and was mustered in the service at Fort Hawkins, Ga., 1813. Capt. Irwin's company was engaged in the battle of Ottosee and Talassee."

General Notes: Child - Major General William IRWIN

William IRWIN fought in the Indian wars and was an Alabama state senator.
Since at least 1733, the site along the Chattahoochee River that is now Eufaula was occupied by three Creek Indian tribes of the Muskogee Nation. One of these was the Eufaulas (pronounced "u-fall-uhs"). General William Irwin, a hero in the War of 1814, was granted several thousand acres of land in nearby Henry County. One of the most prosperous men in the area, Irwin served as its first state senator. He used his considerable influence to promote development in the area and established the first steamboat wharf along Eufaula's high river bluffs. This set the stage for the town's rise to prominence as a center of trade. The town was renamed "Irwinton" in his honor. Source: <http://www.eufaulapilgrimage.com/eufaula.html>)

General Notes: Husband - Henry ISBELL

Henry Isbell is in the Lunenburg tax lists until 1764,
although Halifax was formed in 1752. In 1748 he has one tithe, listed in
the district defined as "from the fork to Cubb creek" which was in what
would become Charlotte County. In 1749 he has one tithe, in the district
defined as "from Falling River to Little Ronoke River", still in what
would become Charlotte. He could certainly have been close to the
boundary of Charlotte and Halifax in those lists. In 1764 a Henry
Isbell has 4 tithes and 500 acres, named in one of the lists for St.
James Parish (it had been formed in 1761 and would become Mecklenburg
County). [Tax info from Sunlight on the Southside.] (Pam Miller, email, 6.17.2005)

General Notes: Child - Barna IVEY

Other than friends and neighbors, was there a family relationship to the descendandants of Willian and Frances O'DANIEL of Stafford County, Virginia?

In Ivey Cemetery, Russell County, Alabama, where Barna IVEY is buried, are also the graves of James Levi DANIELL, his wife, Elizabeth Clements BUTTS, James Levi's mother, Martha Pearson Cook Daniell DANIEL, Francis C. BUTTS and wife Catherine DANIELL, d/o J. L. and E. C. DANIELL.

In addition, the Barna was in Baldwin County, Georgia and appears to have moved to Barbour/Russell County, Alabama at the same time LJames Levi and family did.

The Barna Ivey Family is presented in "Children of Robert Ivey Jr. & Elizabeth West", a well footnoted file at
http://www.genfiles.com/ivey/iveyrobert2children.htm, homepage: http://www.genfiles.com/ by Bob Baird.

"Barna Ivey (22 September 1795 - 21 November 1856) He appears in many records as Barney Ivey, but usually signed his own name as "Barna Ivey", and his name appears as "Barna Ivey" in the Bible record mentioned below. His full given name is somewhat uncertain. A grandson's biographical sketch published in 1893 calls him "Barnabus Ivey". The family Bible in the family of one of his daughters, called the Ivey-Garland Bible, contains his birth, death and marriage dates, along with his parents, his children and other Davis and Garland relatives. According to this record, he married Alcy Ann Davis (9 December 1800 \endash 14 November 1886) on 12 December 1816, a time when the family was still living in Lenoir County. She was the daughter of Malachi Davis and Ann Wooten, according to a court case in Duplin County, North Carolina which calls her "Elsie" Ivey. A Davis family history contains more information on the Malachi Davis family.
Barna Ivey and his wife moved with his father to Baldwin County, Georgia and is on the same list of Camp Creek Baptist Church members in 1817. A newspaper notice of 20 July 1819 says he was living on Camp Creek, 10 miles from Milledgeville. He appears as head of household in Baldwin County in 1820. In 1830 Barney Ivy appears in Houston County, apparently with his mother-in-law and some of her children in the household. Note that his son James Washington Ivey claimed to have been born in Houston County in 1831 (see below). Further, his son Malachi Ivey's 1893 biography states that his father "lived in Houston and Troup Counties then removed to Alabama…" The above-referenced statement by John B. Garland says Barna Ivey moved to Russell County, Alabama in 1836, while the obituary of his daughter Elizabeth (see below) gives the date as 1837. (Note that all the children through Josephine, born 1836, give their birthplace as Georgia in later censuses.) He is in the 1840 census of Russell County with five sons and three daughters in the household. As a Russell County resident in 1843 he and several Davis relatives gave a power of attorney to his brother-in-law Windell Davis back in Duplin County. In 1850 he was enumerated in Barbour County, Alabama but by the 1855 state census was in Macon County. He is listed as owner of 30 slaves in the 1855 Macon County slave census. A separate North Carolina record also identifies him as a Macon County resident in 1856. According to Malachi Ivey's statement, his father died in Macon County. Indeed Barna Ivey's will, dated 8 November 1856, was proved there. He is perhaps buried, however, in Barbour County. A gravestone, apparently installed in more modern times, marks his grave in Barbour County, though the year of birth on the stone is three years earlier than the year given in the family Bible and predates his parents marriage. His widow is in the 1860 census of Macon County and in the 1870 and 1880 census of Russell County, where she died in 1886 according to the Bible. The eldest son stated in 1893 (see below) that his parents had five sons and seven daughters, and Elizabeth Ivey Denson's obituary calls her one of twelve children, though the Ivey-Garland Bible lists birth dates for only eleven children. The omitted child was Robert Ivey, who apparently died during the Civil War. Note that the 1820 census suggests one additional son born before1820, who apparently died in infancy."
