General Notes: Wife - Mary STANLEY

Mary STANLEY, daughter of Samuel STANLEY, is said to be born about 1769 because her gravestone says "Mrs. Mary Hillegas//died September 21, 1859//aged 90 years." [Transcribed by Marian Stanley Tucker] In the 1850 census, Mary [Stanley (William) Howell (Robert) Hendrick (Charles) Williamson (William)] HILLEGAS is age 70, born about 1779/80, and her daughter Sarah T. [Howell] WALTERS, age 53 [born about 1797]. The difference of 10 years is of interest, but does not make her too young to have been the mother of Sarah Taylor HOWELL born between 1795 and 1797 per the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

"I will give the following on other Stanley lines in early S.C. In old Cheraw Dist. there was a Revolutionary soldier named Moses STANLEY, and he is listed as Pvt. in Greggs History of Old Cheraw. We know nothing more about him. However, in 1790 U.S. Census of Cheraw 35 Dist., S.C., is listed Capt. Samuel STANLEY born in Va. (New Kent County, I think) and was Capt. in Rev. War in Va., moved thence to Cheraw and then to Columbia, S.C. He died there about 1813 and his wife was a Miss HENDRICKS, daughter. of Capt. William HENDRICKS a Rev. soldier from Cheraw. They had two sons, Robert Hendricks STANLEY and William Byrd STANLEY, and a dau. who m. Henry McGOWAN, dau. Elizabeth m. TRAPP, and dau. Mary who married 4 times, first to Wm. HOWELL; 2nd to Dr. Robert HENDRICKS; 3rd to _____WILLIAMSON, and fourth William HILLEGUS of Charleston. In 1850 this lady filed an affidavit that she was the niece of my g.g.grandfather Capt. Robert PASLAY, Rev. soldier, and that she at that time living in Cheraw district S.C. This affidavit in Washington, D.C., in Capt. Robert PASLAY Revolutionary File R. 7988. In 1790 Capt. Robert PASLAY 2ndly married Elizabeth CROCKER. His first wife was Sarah (which I take to be HENDRICKS, being his niece makes me say that) I come from the 2nd wife Elizabeth CROCKER.
Robert Hendricks STANLEY and another son William Byrd STANLEY, who was long time Mayor of Columbia, S.C., about the time of the Civil War. This family long ran the Stanley China shop in Columbia, S.C., and they are buried in the Stanley Family graveyard in Columbia, S.C. In Vol. 4: Wallace 'Hist. Of South Carolina' there is a Genealogy of this family.
There was an early methodist of S.C., Rev. LEDBETTER also. They are found in History of Methodism in S.C., by Betts.

"Mary "Polly" STANLEY was a daughter of Samuel STANLEY and his first wife, --------Paslay, both from Virginia. Mary Polly is buried in the Stanley plot here adjacent to the First Presbyterian Church. Her birth and death dates are on her marker, and I'll go look at them tomorrow when I am in town and let you know. In Old and New Columbia, if I remember correctly, the author thinks her birth date somewhat short, for he said that she was married to two Revolutionary officers, Howell and Hendrick." "This afternoon I went to the Stanley plot in the churchyard. It is so beautiful there; the trees are expertly pruned and about to go into full bloom in just a few weeks. The ground cover is composed of millions of tiny violets and small white blooms. The entire cemetery is a showplace right in the middle of the town.
On the gravestone of Mary Polly Stanley's is written: Mrs. Mary Hillegas//died September 21, 1859//aged 90 years. If she were ninety when she died, then she would have been born in 1769. As I mentioned last night, some think the date late, in as much as she married two officers of the Revolution, Captain Howell and Dr. Hendrick.
I also looked at the Duke grave I mentioned. It says: Thomas Wells Duke//1795-1818//Son of Charles O. and Dorothea Duke ("This is one of the stones we had to remake, as the original one was falling apart. We could not make out the wording on the lower part of the old one. As I remember, it said something about his being killed in a war." Marian Stanley Tucker)
My grandfather, Charles Duke Stanley was evidently named for the father listed here, but no one ever told me anything about this.
I do not believe I ever had a copy of Dr. Robert's will and other papers, but I'm sure one could be procured at the SC Archives. Some years ago, I did, however, hire Mr. Brent Holcombe, a certified genealogist, to find out what he could about the Hendrick family. Don't think he ever came across anything useful, other than the fact that Louisa Hendrick, his daughter, was sent to boarding school in North Carolina.
As an aside, my great-great uncle, Captain William Byrd Stanley, second son of Martha Hendrick (Duke) Stanley and Samuel Stanley, fought in the Mexican War, which was sometime before the War Between the States. Captain Stanley was awarded (according to my mother) a large gold round engraved gold piece, one of only seven given to certain members of the Palmetto Regiment who went to Mexico. My father inherited this gold piece.
Unfortunately, my father and mother had a terrible time during the Great Depression, and unbeknownst to Mother, Father sold the gold piece when they were in such terrible financial straits. Mother said she would have done almost anything to have kept it.
I'm sure that this piece at auction today, at Christie's in New York, would sell for somewhere in the high six figures, perhaps more. Uncle William also was given two silver dueling pistols by the City of Columbia, but I do not know what happened to them. He was very well off when living, president of the bank, mayor three times, many other honors.
I have found some of my papers this morning, and need to clarify Captain William Hendrick senior's position. He was a Member of the South Carolina Twelfth, Fourteenth, Fifteenth, and Sixteenth Royal Assemblies, from 1740 to 1747. (From Biographical Directory of the SC House of Representatives, Vol. II, Edgar and Bailey) According to my research, he married the second time Mary Vanderhorst, daughter of John Vanderhorst of the Charleston family by that name. Captain William Hendrick Sr.'s home was in Christ Church Parish, Charlestown, South Carolina.
I'll keep looking. Thanks, Marian Stanley" (Marian Stanley Tucker, email, 3/24/2005. RLD)

The mother of Mary Polly Stanley was -------Paslay from Virginia. I believe Samuel and Paslay had six daughters.
There is a lovely description of Mary Stanley when she was old in either the Selby or Williams book:
"Many evenings I have spent with my old friend, Mrs. Mary Hillegas [Mary Stanley]---reading to her news and advertisements from files of old papers, and listening to her interesting comments. Her memory was wonderful, and I have been able to corroborate some of her information in such a satisfactorary manner, that I take the balance as literally true. We would seat ourselves---the old lady taking a pinch of snuff, wiping her nose with a red silk handkerchief, holding her head aside, and then deftly using a handsome linen one conspicuously. The reading would then begin and the replies to queries be brought out, besides voluntary information.----[the memory of my old friend] is so complete, that I can safely venture considerable beyond my own times."
I visited the Stanley plot in the Presbyterian cemetery this morning and looked up the gravestone of Captain William Byrd Stanley's wife:
"In Memory of //Harriet Louisa Stanley//wife of//William B. Stanley//and daughter of//James D and Sarah Taylor Zimmerman//who departed this life//December 29, 1841 (gravestone so old I could not make out the last date here, but think it might say 1841)//in the 24th year of her age.//"Those who knew her best, loved her the most."
Obviously, the person recording the information you found omitted Harriet Louisa Zimmerman's name as she might have already been deceased.
It seems that Mary Stanley Howell was left a substantial estate by both her first and second marriages: Howell and Hendrick.
Thanks for the suggestions concerning Aunt Belle's journal. I'll tend to seeing it photographed ASAP.
Thanks, Marian Stanley (Amstucker@aol.com, To: roloda@knology.net May 11, 2005 Subject: Re: Aunt Belle's Journal) ["[Great] Aunt Belle" is Isabelle Ione Stanley Beard.]

"Robert H. Stanley supposedly was a surveyor and was sent to Alabama from Georgia. I have found nothing to corroborate this family story. He was, however, according to records at the courthouse in Hayneville, a Magistrate Judge for some years in Hayneville, AL." [Email: Mary E. Stanley, maryestanley@yahoo.com , May 21, 2009]

General Notes: Wife - Emma Eugenie Courtois STONE

"Emma Eugenie Courtois Stone, born 18 March 1811, Verdun, France (additional information you have is correct)" I have all documentation regarding her father Valentine Stone from England and natural mother from French documents. [Mary E. Stanley, Los Angles, California, email, 10/20/2012]

The 1850, 1860, and 1870 U.S. censuses of Butler County, Alabama show Emma Courtois STONE's birthplace as England; however, the 1880 Butler County census shows Emma's birthplace as Paris, France, as well as her father born in France and her mother born in England, only the "E" visible on the page at Heritage Quest.

"When Emma was about three years old her mother died.
Her father's mother had married the second time. Lord SLADE and lived in London and had a lovely home (No 16 Alllsop Building) took the three children to rear.
Lady SLADE was so displeased that her son should have married a French girl -an enemy daughter- would not allow he children to speak French and of course had an English governess for them.
Emma remembers the immense drawing rooms with large potpourri jars on either side of the fireplaces that filled the rooms with a delightful odor. She spoke of the large dinner parties at the house and how she and her brother and sister would stand on the stairway to see the beautifully dressed ladies go nto the dining room. She said it seemed that her grandfather and grandmother were out nearly every evening unless they entertained at home.
The children ate withe the governess but on the rare occasions of her grandparents eating alone that the children were allowed to come to the table for the dessert.
When Emma was eight or nine years old her great aunt Mrs. SAVAGE moved to Charleston, S.C. and took Emma with her on a visit. The ship was a sailing vessel and took six weeks to reach Charleston. On the way they passed a large school of whales and the Captain had everyone keep perfectly quiet but allowed them to go on deck to see the whales-he was afraid that if they made any noise it would frighten the whales and they might damage the ship-This and other childish memories of the trip over were told to her children.
During the epidemic of yellow fever in Charleston Emma had the fever and was so ill that her name was among the list of those that had died.
Emma learned after she was grown that her great Aunt Mrs. SAVAGE sent the notice of her death to her father in England as she wanted to keep Emma with her-so she lost all communication with her father. Mrs. SAVAGE told Emma that her father had married a beautiful Irish lady-somebody Emma did not remember her name.
Mrs. SAVAGE sent Emma to Columbia, S.C. to the Barhamville Female College which was about two miles from the post office in Columbia....While at college she met the brother of one of her school mates Robert Hendrick STANLEY (brother of Martha STANLEY) and they fell in love with each other.-Robert was only twenty two years old-as Emma's great aunt opposed the marriage. So Emma with Robert's sister Martha went into Columbia to Robert's cousins' sweetheart's house-Loveridge GUION- and was married Loveridge being her bridesmaid and Robert's cousin David GREY-who later married Loveridge-was best man. Martha STANLEY was also a bridesmaid. Married May 5-1830. (In another entry Aunt Belle writes "See Southrn Times, May 6, 1830.")
Immediately after the marriage Robert and Emma went to Hayneville, Ala. Where Robert's cousins Mr. and Mrs. RUDOLPH was (sic) living. In the party with the newly married couple were Robert's half brother Charles DUKE and their cousin Robert GREY.
Robert GREY stopped in Millen and decided to make his home - Robert STANLEY located in Hayneville and built the first frame building in the village (the house is still standing-) Charles DUKE went on to Leesville Florida and located there.
Robert and Emma STANLEY had twelve children all born in Hayneville. When the youngest child was an infant the family moved first to Mathets (illegible) Collerene and finally to Greenville Ala where all the children grew to maturity." (Journal of Isabelle Ione Stanley)

"Captain William Byrd STANLEY, second son of Martha Hendrick (Duke) Stanley and Samuel STANLEY, fought in the Mexican War, which was sometime before the War Between the States.
(Marian Stanley Tucker, Amstucker@aol.com, March 24, 2005
"From one of the old Columbia books I have read, the granddaughter of Mary Stanley HOWELL and daughter of Sarah HOWELL and James ZIMMERMAN married Mary's half-brother, Captain William Byrd STANLEY, and she died in childbirth, and both she and her child are buried in the Stanley plot. I wonder if it's all right for one to marry one's grandmother's half brother! Captain STANLEY never married again; left his very substantial estate to his one niece and five nephews, including my grandfather, executor of the estate, Charles Duke STANLEY. Captain William Byrd STANLEY had a very colorful life, including his being one of the committee who surrendered to Sherman. His estate was so large that it took twelve years to settle." The gravestone of Harriet Louisa ZIMMERMAN STANLEY reads: "In Memory of Harriet Louisa Stanley wife of William B. Stanley and daughter of James D and Sarah Taylor Zimmerman who departed this life December 29, 1841 (gravestone so old I could not make out the last date here, but think it might say 1841) in the 24th year of her age. 'Those who knew her best, loved her the most.'" (I visited the Stanley plot in the Presbyterian cemetery this morning and looked up the gravestone of Captain William Byrd Stanley's wife... General Notes: Husband - Henry STEWART

STEWART, HENRY J. 1820-1898 LOWNDES
Henry J. Stewart, one of the early members of the TroupVille bar, and who resided at old Troupville from about 1844 to 1849, was born in Liberty County, July 15, 1820, a son of John and Margaret Carter Stewart and a grandson of Gen. Daniel Stewart of Revolutionary fame. His father died in 1827. Henry J. Stewart was married at Troupville, March 19, 1846, to Sallie N. Underwood, daughter of Hon. John J. Underwood (Vol.III). She was born Oct. 28, 1823, in Laurens County. Born by this marriage were three children.
I. Eugenia Charlton b. July 18, 1847, m. 1st. Dr. William Smith Rice; 2nd. Dr. C. B. Tompkins.
2. Robert Stephens b. Dec. 31, 1849, m. Ist. Pauline deGraffenreid; 2nd. Margaret McInnis.
3. Ella Milledge b. Sept. 12, 1857, m. B. B. Blackwell of Live Oak, Fla.
Mr. Stewart grew up on the family plantation in Liberty County and received a good education from private tutors. When about grown he went to Savannah and read law under Charlton & Ward, one of the eminent law firms of that city. He was admitted to the bar in Savannah in 1843, and after a short practice there decided to locate at Troupville, Lowndes County. He entered a law partnership at Troupville with Samuel Spencer, another young attorney who had located there, and this partnership continued until Mr. Stewart moved to Jasper, Fla., in the winter of 1849-50. He moved there with his father-in-law, where they formed a partnership for the practice of law and which lasted several years.
In his new Florida home he was within less than a year elected County Judge, which office he held 1850-54. He then was elected State Senator from the 12th district, serving 1854-55. He again served as County Judge, 1858-61 and 1863-1877. He held the office of State's Attorney for the 3rd Judicial Circuit, from 1885 until about 1890 when he resigned.
Judge Stewart was also prominent in Masonic circles. After serving in several lodge offices in the Jasper Lodge, including the office of Worshipful Master for three or four years, he was elected Grand Junior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Florida in 1858, and advanced the next year to Grand Senvor Warden. He served as deputy Grand Master in 1861, and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge in 1867-68.
Judge Stewart's military activities included that of serving as captain of the "Lowndes County Hussars", a local military company, from 1847 until his removal to Florida. During the Civil War he was captain in the 2nd Florida Regiment, C.S. Army, but on account of bad health resigned. He was then assigned to the quartermaster department in which he served until the close of the war.
He died at his home in Jasper, Oct. 20, 1898. His wife had preceded him in death, Sept. 9, 1894. They were buried in the Jasper town cemetery. (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia by Judge Folks Huxford, provided by Teresa Griffis)

Sarah N. C. UNDERWOOD, "Sallie", born 28 October 1823 was the daughter of John G. UNDERWOOD and Sarah King CAWTHORN. (Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia, by Judge Folks Huxford) Censuses from 1860 and 70 indicate Sarah was born about 1830, the 1880 census shows sarah at age 54, born then about 1826, closer to the date given by Judge Huxford.

"Judge Henry J. Stewart, married Sallie N. C. Underwood, second daughter of Major John J. Underwood, a famous criminal lawyer of South Georgia." ["History and genealogy of the Stewart, Elliott and Dunwoody families", http://archive.org/stream/historygeanology00bull/historygeanology00bull_djvu.txt]

General Notes: Wife - Clarice LaTrelle STRICKLAND

"LaTrelle S. Troup of Wrightsville [GA]", sister, is named in the June 14, 2003 obituary of Jacquelyn Strickland Bradt.

Obituary: Latrelle Strickland Troup, 68, of Wrightsville, Georgia passed away peacefully on June 23, 2004 after a short illness. She was born and grew up in Reidsville, Georgia and lived in St. Petersburg, Florida in the early 1950s. While living in St. Petersburg, Latrelle was a model and was crowned the 1952 Tampa Cigar Bowl Queen. Her outward beauty and charm was only surpassed by her inner beauty of grace, compassion, and quiet strength. She inspired everyone she knew to reach for their highest potential, and was always there to encourage them toward that quest. Her passion and devotion was to her family whom she cherished dearly. This was shown thru years of work with her husband in their drugstore and her children's school and community activities. She judged her success thru the achievements of her family. She viewed life with optimism, the glass always half full; greeted homeless animals with food and shelter, and had an infectious smile and quick wit that could dispel the gloom from any cloudy, dark day. Latrelle was a brilliant light too quickly extinguished, and will be missed by all those blessed to have known her. -Latrelle moved to Wrightsville, GA with her husband in 1958 where Mr. Troup owned and operated Troup Drugstore until his retirement. Her gift and love of fashion inspired her to open a ladies boutique in the 1970s. She was a member of Reidsville Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Edward and Carrie Belle Jones Strickland; two brothers, W. E. Strickland, Jr. and L. Jack Strickland, and a sister, Jacquelyn S. Bradt. -She is survived by her devoted husband of fifty years, Earl C. Troup; a daughter and son-in-law, Patti Troup Drew and Dr. Peter Drew of Gainesville, FL; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Chris Troup and Lisa Troup of Macon, GA; three precious grandchildren, Matthew Drew of Gainesville, FL and Michelle and Allison Troup of Macon, GA; a loving sister, Carolyn S. Rewis of Reidsville, GA; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. Friday, June 25 at Hart's Mortuary in Macon. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2004, at 3P.M., in the Chapel at Hart's Mortuary in Macon. -Those who wish may make a contribution to The Children's Hospital at The Medical Center of Central Georgia, or Portsbridge Hospice. Hart's Mortuary has charge of arrangements. [The Macon Telegraph, Home Edition, Friday, June 25, 2004, Page 4]

----- Original Message ----- From: Vilma Pinero, wyndwlkr@aol.com Sent: Friday, December 09, 2005 9:43 PM Subject: Sad news
"Dear Friends and Family:
It is with great sadness that I write tonight to let you know that my mom has died earlier in the evening. As some of you know, she was evacuated to a nursing home in San Antonio due to hurricane Katrina. Juli and I had planned to go up and get her yesterday to being her to a facility closer to home. However on Wednesday, she was found unresponsive at her nursing home. She was taken to a local hospital and found to be overwhelming septic and in cardiogenic shock. Juli and I flew up emergently on Wednesday. She was conscious, responsive and knew we were there. Her condition waxed and waned over the next few days but we continued with aggressive treatment, as was her wish. Juli and I flew home this afternoon to get some things we needed and the whole family planned to drive up in the morning. In the early evening, the hospital called to say that she had rapidly deteriorated and resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful. Thanks to all of you who prayed for us. We were fortunate to have arrived while mom was still aware and are grateful for the time we had with her."
