General Notes: Husband - Daniel TALBOTT

Daniel TALBOTT is named in the 16 August 1824 LW&T of his father, Samuel TALBOTT: "I give unto my son Daniel Talbott $1."

TALBOTT family researchers disagree on which Daniel TALBOTT owned the Red Lion tavern in Millersburg, Kentucky:
1. "Daniel Talbott was born in Spotsylvania County, Virginia on October 25, 1779. This is according to the late Edna Whitley of Paris, Kentucky. Daniel married Elizabeth "Betsey" Paris in Clark County on May 2, 1798. Moses Paris signed the surety bond. She was born on December 16, 1779, and died on April 7, 1825. It has been assumed that this Daniel Talbott moved to Millersburg and ran the Red Lion tavern in Millersburg from 1805 for about 30 years. However, that was another Daniel Talbott, son of Henry Talbott." (http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyclark3/family/fr018-talbott.htm)
2. "Daniel Talbott born in Spottsylvania Co., Va Oct. 25, 1779 was married May 2, 1798 in Clark Co. to Elizabeth Paris, dau. of Moses who owned land in Clark and Madison in 1800. She was born Dec. 16, 1779 and d. Apr. 7, 1825. Daniel ran the Red Lion tavern at Millersburg, Ky from 1805, is it said for 30 yars. In 1817 he referred to changing the name of his stone tavern, doubtless because the ion was a British device in armorial designs. Their children were Polly, James, Ann, Wm., John D., Samuel, Benjamin, Sarah, Maria Louisa, Nancy Dan, Eliza and Juliet...." ((http://www.shawhan.com/bourbonfamilies.html))

I am a descendant of the second wife of Daniel Talbott, Lucy Smith. They married 15 Sep 1825, and had 5 children. (e.g.white@att.net)

General Notes: Wife - Gladys Martha A. WAGNER

Gladys Martha Wagner was the daughter of Justus Wagner and Mary Weiner. [Obituary of Justus Wagner, The Register-Republic, Rockford, Illinois, September 27, 1947, Page 2]

Gladys Martha Wagner married Wallace Herbert Smoke, Jr., on 16 December 1919 in Washington, District of Columbia. On 5 January 1920, she applied for a passport to accompany him to France while he worked for the American Graves Registration Service. She swore she was born in Ashton, Illinois on 7 March 1897 and that her husband was born in Arcadia, Florida. She stated their permanent residence as Washington, District of Columbia. She intended to depart from the port of Hoboken, New Jersey on the "Powhatan" on January 15, 1920.
The voyage of the "Powhatan" ended soon after departure. About 200 miles off Halifax, the engines failed as the ship took on water from cloged ash vents. The helpless ship wallowed in high seas for 6 days before the "Northern Pacific" started taking on passengers from the "Powhatan" about 6 P.M. in heavy seas on 22 January. Two of Northern Pacific's boats were smashed as they left her side, but all aboard were rescued, The transfers were completed at 10 P.M. but the "Powhatan" remained in distress, being towed toward Halifax. Among the transferred to the "Northern Pacific" was Gladys M. Smoke, Ashland, Illinios. "Mrs. W. H. Smoke of Chicago, who was en route to Paris with her husband, said that at one time the Powhatan listed 35 degrees. She said that a Chinese stoker fell down a hatchway in the darkness, after the motors failed, and was killed. The only means of illimination was candles." [The Salt Lake Telegram, Salt Lake City, Utah, Saturday, January 24, 1920, Page 1]

Gladys and Wallace divorced about 1936.
