General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth THOMAS

"Elizabeth Thomas- (Another Elizabeth) Born about 1776, probably in Pennsylvania. Her husband was Mathias Rofelty Jr., son of Ten Mile Creek Pioneer Mathias Rofelty Sr. During the Revolutionary War "the Rofelty's were living on a tract of land across the Ten mile from Benjamin Strites Mill adjoining Edward Burson's place". The story told by historian and genealogist Howard Leckey is that while Mathias Rofelty Sr. "was away from home, leaving his wife and two grown daughters on the plantation, a war party of Indians came to the Rofelty cabin and attacked the wife and daughters. They "knocked the white women down, scalped them and left them for dead." When Mr. Rofelty returned, he found one daughter dead and his wife and another daughter badly wounded. Mrs. Rofelty survived only a few hours, but the young girl recovered.

The Indians, afterward, calmly went next door and were fed a pot of beans by Mrs. Edward Burson. Mrs. Burson was then left unharmed. The scalped daughter miraculously recovered from her wounds (Sarah Rofelty), made a home with the Edward Burson family, and later married (a man named Haines) and raised a large family. (Source: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania, by Earle Robert Forrest, published by S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1926)

Elizabeth Thomas married Mathias Rofelty Jr. about the year 1794, and moved to Hamilton County, Ohio, Green Township (near Cincinnati). Mathias and Elizabeth had known children Elis, born 1800, Mathias Jr. born 1805, Barbara, Susannah, and Sarah. (The Thomas Trail,, chap. 11, p. 11, Bud Thomas)

Howard Rollins, Dog Expert, Dies
Chicago, Ill. - Howard Rollins, 54, of Sanford, Fla., a retired Navy lieutenant commander and an international dog show exhibitor, died wednesday in the United States Naval Hospital at Great Lakes of burns suffered Sunday in a fire. Rollins was burned when a bottle gas stove exploded in his mobile camper parked here. His wife, Aileen [*], told Lake County Coroner Robert H. Bazcox that her husband suffered most of the burns when he rescued one of their five dogs. The other four escaped without injury. Rollins, who was in Chicago for the International Kennel Club's dog show in the International Amphitheater, apparently attempted to light the stove while preparing breakfast, and the gas unit exploded. Mrs. Rollins left Wednesday for Sanford to arrange funeral services. [The Dallas Morning News, Dallas, Texas, Friday, April 12, 1963, Section 3, Page 8]
[*]"Aileen" apparently a misspelling of Elaine, Doris Terry's middle name.]

Howard T. Rollins' obituary was published in the Daily Press on April 13, 1963, p. 9. [Newport News Public Library System, Daily Press Obituary Index]

General Notes: Husband - Eleck SWANSON

Alec SWENSON was born in Sweden, date uncertain. Conflicting records indicate his birth sometime between 1859-1864. In census information Eleck SWANSON is 36 in 1900, 48 in 1910, 57 in 1920, and 64, three years later in 1923, according to his Mississippi Burial or Removal Permit. Records also list him as "Eleck" and "Alex" Swanson.

In notes by Patrick BERNARD from conversations with his mother, Agnes Swanson BERNARD, Alex's daughter, is a comment that Alex was born on an October 26, and was buried on October 26, 1923. When "Aleck" immigrated to the United States, his surname was anglicized to SWANSON, but his name is also spelled as SWANSEN in the 1910 census. He was called "Alexander" and "Alex" by his family, his given name further anglicized?

"Aleck" SWANSON became a citizen of the United States on March 12, 1895. His citizenship paper from the Louisiana Civil District Court for the Parish of Orleans states he was a subject of the King of Sweden. He applied for citizenship on 7 March 1893. Joseph BURKE and Fred PETERSON, U.S. citizens, stated that Aleck SWANSON "continually resided within the limits and jurisdiction of the United States of America for more than five years last past.", and furthermore, "has resided for one year at least within the State of Louisiana that during the whole of said time he has behaved himself as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of thee United States of America, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same..." (Citizenship paper in the possession of Aleck's grandson, Patrick BERNARD of Bowie , Maryland. RLD)

Eleck married Catherine ROWAN about 1898. He was some 15 years older than Catherine. They had eight children, only three of whom survived early childhood, Agnes Anna, Carmen Catherine, and Michael Harris SWANSON.

Alexander SWANSON was named as "Eleck" in two of these three censuses:
1900 U.S. Census, Louisiana, Orleans Parish, Ward 15, New Orleans; Series: T623 Roll: 576 Page: 131:

This census indicates that Alexander SWANSON was born in August 1864 in Sweden, as were both his parents, that he migrated to the United States in 1883, and was a naturalized citizen. He is a day laborer who is educated and can read, write, and speak English.

Katie has had seven children, of which four are living. An unnamed daughter is age 0, born in Mississippi. The three who died in infancy, are William, Cecilia, and Eldry, likely born between 1900 and 1905. Residing with Alex and Katie is Katie's sister, Loretta ROHEN, 22. Loretta was born in 1885, her sister Maggie Viola was born in 1888. Loretta married in June 1911.

General Notes: Wife - Mary Keziah WRIGHT

"Mary Keziah Wright first married Stephen Moss in about 1763, who came to Orangeburg from Virginia in about 1760. He died while on a visit to Virginia in about 1774. After his death, she married John Salley. They had a son, also named Stephen Moss, who was born about 1769 and died on 2 November 1839. He married, in 1809, Ann Erwin (c. 1784 - 25 September 1850), a daughter of James Erwin and Sarah Daniel. There are Erwin and Daniel places on a Robert Mills map of Barnwell District, made in 1820, in the area of Midway, South Carolina, where these families lived. Midway is between Bamberg and Branchville. None of these towns existed when this map was made." (George Salley, mailto:factoid@ix.netcom.com, 11/18/2005)
