General Notes: Husband -

"Daniel THOMAS- (proven by will) Daniel was born April 7, 1783 in what is now Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents to Kentucky at a young age and lived in Fayette County, not far from Henry THOMAS', "Thomas Station". He married Mary McQUEEN (born 8 Dec 1785, died 2 February, 1858) of nearby Madison County, Kentucky on 2 December, 1804 and lived for several years in Lewis County, Kentucky. The book "Portrait and Biographic Record of Madison and Hamilton Counties Indiana" by the Chicago Biographical Publishing Company, 1893 provides a short biography on Daniel Thomas and states he was a 'soldier in the War of 1812".

Daniel and family moved to Rush County, Indiana in the year 1834, following his son George's lead. George bought land in Rush County in 1829 and moved the rest of the family there October 22, 1832. Daniel and Mary had nine known children including six girls and three boys. His children were George, born November 1805, Evey, William, Eliza, Sarah "Sally", Daniel Edwin Rufus. (D.E.R.) Thomas, born 20 February 1828, Uriah, Mary, and Nancy Thomas. There is good evidence of a son David Thomas, also. No proof on David.

George Thomas, son of Daniel, is mentioned prominently in the early history books of Rush County, Indiana. He married Lydia Walker, also a native of Lewis County, Kentucky. In 1860 and 1861, George represented Rush County in the General Assembly of Indiana, and also took an active roll in the organization of the Fifty Second Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry, in the Civil War. He was an Elder in the Christian Church and in the early days his residence was known as "the preacher's home", because it was a stopping place of ministers and circuit riders. George's death occurred October 30, 1863 and Lydia died February 24, 1884.

George Washington Thomas,
grandson of Daniel and son of George Thomas, was born in Walker Township, Rush County, Indiana July 15, 1844. He inherited portions of his father's land totaling 193 ½ acres which he turned into an excellent farm with his attentions given to "thoroughbred stock". According to the book "History of Rush County, Indiana", Brant and Fuller, 1888, "his farm now has some of the finest stock in this part of the state". George W. married Emma S. Smith, a native of Fulton, Illinois. Their children were: Clarence, born April 16, 1882, died April 24, 1882 and William W. Thomas born April 19, 1884.

D.E.R. Thomas
married Josephine W. Hilligas and had the following children: William W. born 1850, Alonzo B. born 1852, David Austin, born 4 Aug 1854, Laura F., born 7 April 1858, Mary Catherine, born 1861, Clement L. Valley, born 1865, Amanda L., born may 1866, and Allie E., born 1867. Josephine died in the spring of 1889 and D.E.R. Thomas then married Jane May. D.E.R. and Jane had two children, Rufus Clyde, born 7 April 1892 and Velma Edith, born 23 December 1893.

Daniel Thomas died in Rush County, Indiana May 2, 1853.

The will of Daniel Thomas goes as follows:
I, Daniel Thomas of Rush County and State of Indiana do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made.

I lend to my wife Mary MELSON the plantation where I now live during her life or widowhood; give to her 1 mare, 2 cows & calves, 3 ewes & lambs. The plantation where I now live to be divided between my 2 sons Elijah & Hager MELSON. To the unborn child the land I had from HOSKINS, if a boy; if not a boy, land to be sold & divided among all my children. My wife may get timber for her use from the land I got from HOSKINS. To my daughter Mehala MELSON 1 Negro girl Nancy. I lend to my wife Mary MELSON 1 Negro boy during her life or widowhood. Executors to sell 1 Negro girl Hagah, & also for the remainder of my property. I hold a note against Henry FLUEY which Edward HENINGS undertook to collect; payment to be delivered in the presence of Samuel SEAWELL, also Thomas HENINGS, Robert PLEDGER (all the legal aspects not clear to me). Executors: My wife Mary MELSON, James HOSKINS. J. A. MELSON. Wit: John PLEDGER; Robert PLEDGER; Susan CLAYTON; Polly (x) SAWYER. Probate begun June Term 1809. 'This will was contested by the heirs of said deceased and ordered for trial at next September Term (1809) & the above probate erased by order of Court. C. Spruill CC." (Note: Mary PLEDGER is mentioned in the will of her father, Michael ALEXANDER, 26 March 1781. One wonders if Mary (ALEXANDER) PLEDGER was the wife of Joseph PLEDGER, see LW&T 20 Nov 1807; Joseph doesn't mention his wife, but they do have a daughter, Polly (Mary); perhaps named for her mother. "On 24 February 1839 James married Susan T. Reid, who was born on 9 June 1823 near Greenville, Butler County, Alabama and died on 26 February 1866 in Hayneville, Lowndes County, Alabama. It is unclear how they met. Susan's father, Alexander Reid, was prosperous planter and her mother, Nancy Ellen Cook, came from a political family in Lowndes County.

Susan T. Reid endured the hardships of the Civil War without a husband and father. She raised 10 children. Susan died of undetermined causes in 1866, at the outset of Reconstruction. As a consequence, the children of this once prosperous couple were destitute after the war. Alex and his siblings were sent to live with various family members. For a while, around 1866, Alex Meriwether lived with his maternal uncle, Captain Henry Preston Reid, in Lowndes County, AL. By 1870 Alex was living as a student , along with his older brother Jerry , in the home of their older cousin, Dulany Rice Meriwether, who was later Lowndes Co. sheriff. The fact that Alex's parents died when he was young, combined with the dramatic social changes wrought by the Civil War, surely had an impact on his life.

The oldest surviving descendants of Alex have no idea how or why he came to TX. He left AL, probably to seek economic refuge from the war-torn Deep South. there AL some clues that suggest Alex may have followed his older siblings to TX sometime between 1870 and 1878. Alex's older brother Henry B. C., almost certainly was the same person who is listed as a drummer boy and private in Captain Henry Preston Reid's Confederate Rifle Co." Obituary:
Hon. Thomas F. Miller, senior judge of the police court, died about 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home in Takoma Park. Judge Miller had been ill for several months, and it has been regarded by his physicians for some time that death from his affliction was only a question of time. yet nevertheless the end came rather sudden and unexpectedly.
At 2 oclock yesterday afternoon he went out to take a walk in the sunshine with his little daughter, thinking it might make him feel better. He called at the post office and secured his mail, and a short time later returned home, and at 3:30 o'clock he was dead. Shortly after entering the house he was seized with a coughing fit which, together with other causes from which he was a long sufferer, created the eruption of an artery in his neck, and hemorrhage resulted.... Judge Miller was fifty-one years of age and was born in Charlestown, Jefferson County, W. Va.
His attending physician was immediately summoned, but before his arrival Judge Miller was dead. His immediate family and a few neighbors were the only ones present at the time... In 1884 Judge Miller married Miss Annie Wade, daughter of Col. Wade, formerly United States marshal of Georgia and a well-known politician. She is a near relative of Hon. Clark Howell, of the Atlanta Constitution.
He is survived by three small children, the eldest a girl of ten years... Complete arrangements have not yet been made for the funeral, but the following have been selected as pallbearers: Maurice Smith, Alex R. Mullowny, James L. Pugh, jr.; J. J. Darlington, Myer Lewin and P. F. Leighton.
