"James SPANN b. Abt 1805, South Carolina - He was born in Edgefield County, S.C., and lived there until after the 1870 census enumeration was made. It is said that he moved to Mississippi or Texas at some time after 1870.
James SPANN is listed in the 1830 through the 1870 censuses for Edgefield County. In 1830 his household consisted of himself, his wife, and five slaves. In 1840 his household consisted of himself, his wife, four children, and six slaves. In 1850, 1860, and 1870 his household consisted of himself, his wife, and one or more of his several children. His wife was Sarah LOTT (b. 15 February 1813; lvg. in 1870) daughter of Emsley and Sylvia LOTT, whom he married in 1829/30. Equity Roll 435 at Edgefield Courthouse shows that she was the daughter of Emsley LOTT.
As previously stated, on 4 November 1833 James SPANN bought 670 1/2 acres of land which were part of the real estate holdings of his deceased father (Henry SPANN). On 25 December 1833 he bought from Henry H. SPANN the 460 1/2 acres of land which the latter had bought from his father's estate. (Edgefield Courthouse--Deed Book 46, page 448.) Though no search has been made in the connection, it is probable that he acquired other lands also.
Records at Edgefield Courthouse, so far as they have been examined by this writer, show that James SPANN sold the following described tracts of land to the parties herein indicated. His wife, Sarah SPANN, relinquished her dower rights in the said lands.
a. Sold to William R. SPANN, on 4 February 1835, a tract containing 393 acres situated on Beach Creek of South Edisto River, adjoining lands of WATSON, heirs of GOMILLION (deceased), Absolom HORN, and James SPANN. (Deed Book 47, page 303.)
b. Sold to Willis SATCHER, on 29 November 1836, a tract containing 404 1/2 acres situated on Beach Creek of South Edisto River, adjoining lands of Absolom HORN, Delaine LEINWILSON, heirs of John MOURING, David BRASWELL, Jacob LOWERMAN, and William R. SPANN. (Deed Book 48, page 118.)
On November 1845 Abraham JONES deeded to Henry H. SPANN of Lexington, District, S.C., one slave in trust for the benefit of "my sister-in-law" Sarah SPANN (wife of James SPANN of Edgefield District.) (Deed Book DDD, page 550.)
One or more of the several children of James and Sarah SPANN apparently died in infancy or young childhood. The following named ones are included in the 1850 and some subsequent census records for Edgefield County.
(a) John H.
(b) William R.
(c) Philip P.
(d) James M

SEE RESEARCH NOTES on R.M.S.'s wife's new data may cause changes.!!!
"On August 16, 1797, Josiah WATSON sold to Richard Marshall SCOTT "a certain piece [sic] parcel or tract of land situate lying and being in the County of Fairfax on the waters of Holmes run, and called and known by the name of Bush Hill..."
Although this land had been in the possession of WATSON, it is in fact the same piece of land that I have been looking at, for on October 6, 1791, the "said piece, parcel or tract of land called Bush Hill was purchased by the said Josiah WATSON of a certain John RICKTER..." In other words, RICKTER bought the land from the executors of the Hendrickses estate, but sold it back after a year to Josiah WATSON, who sold it again a few years later to Richard Marshall SCOTT.
In one of the above transactions, some land was added to the original tract, for in 1797, the tract contained 272 acres, which was an increase of 50 acres. I do not know for sure where the additional land came from, but the additional acres were probably part of an adjacent 197 acre tract that Watson had bought in 1794. In addition to "Bush Hill," WATSON sold to SCOTT an additional 82 acre tract adjacent to Bush Hill. This tract was then assimilated into Bush Hill, as evidenced by later deeds.
The 1797 transaction is important for three reasons. The first is its use of "Bush Hill" to describe the tract of land. In every deed from this point on, the parcel that I am following is referred to as either Bush Hill or "the farm called Bush Hill." In fact, the name is still used today, with a subdivision, a street, and a school all bearing the name, Bush Hill.
The second reason is because included in the description of the 82 acre plot is "Hepburn's Mill road." Although this road does not exist today, at least not under the same name, this is the first use of such a landmark in the deed that are being used for this paper.
The third reason this deed is important is because the man who bought Bush Hill, Richard Marshall SCOTT, his son, Richard, Jr., and the latter's widow kept a continuous journal between 1811 and 1859. This journal provides an interesting history of Bush Hill, in addition to giving information about the county in that period; it gives a better idea of what Bush Hill was used for during this period.
Although there are only a few explicit references to what exactly was grown at Bush Hill, it was obvious that it was a full working family farm with several inhabitants living on it. Several extended family members are mentioned as living on the farm. Food items that are mentioned include grapes, apples, smoked salted pork, and wheat.
One interesting entry is dated September 8, 1814. On that day, SCOTT "began to haul in my tobacco from town to Bush Hill to keep it out of reach of the enemy who of our 104 hogsheads only took one." This is a reference to the occupation of the nearby port city of Alexandria by the British during the War of 1812. The complete journal is available for public reading, and serves as an interesting supplement to this paper.
1815-16
While Richard Marshall SCOTT owned Bush Hill, he increased its size by 92 acres through the purchase of three pieces of land. The first was from R. D. BUTTE on October 6, 1815. The second was from T. SWANE on June 20, 1816. The third was from Charles LOVE on July 5, 1819." ("A Farm Called Bush Hill" by Aaron Weber, http://www.bbhca.org/Farm_called_Bush_Hill.htm)
"Richard Marshall SCOTT d. 1836 {1833, see epitaph below. RLD} first owned Bush Hill, built by Josiah WATSON in 1763. RMS married his cousin (Mary?) MARSHALL of Maryland and was the father of Richard Marshall SCOTT who came into possession of Bush Hill at age 18 when his mother remarried in 1846. (Natalie Hughes)
Richard Marshall SCOTT is buried in the Scott Family Cemetery located on a rise at the western end of the oval created by Conference Center Dr., Centreville, Va. The cemetery is located about 200 yards southeast of the foundation of "Farmington Plantation". The Scott family owned this property from c.1792 to c. 1850. Epitaph from his headstone:
"SACRED To the memory of RICHARD M. SCOTT of Bush Hill who departed this life at Bath on the 31t of August 1833, in the 63d year of his age. He left an affectionate wife and two sons to whom he was endeared by his affections. His remains, dear and sacred to his family, were translated from Bath to this place."
General Notes: Wife -
Mary Love SCOTT, first wife of Richard Marshall SCOTT, is buried in the Scott Family Cemetery located on a rise at the western end of the oval created by Conference Center Dr., Centreville, Va. The cemetery is located about 200 yards southeast of the foundation of "Farmington Plantation". The Scott family owned this property from c.1792 to c. 1850. Epitaph from her headstone:
"Sacred to the memory of Mrs. MARY SCOTT, the amiable and lamented consort of RICHARD MARSHALL SCOTT of Bush Hill, who departed this life in the 43d year of her age at Richmond in Virginia 13th of January 1812. She expired in the arms of her husband then delegate from the county of Fairfax in the general assembly of Virginia. Her remains, dear and sacred to her husband by his particular desire were translated from Richmond to this spot the family burying ground and interred 17th day of January 1812. Armilda Jane Magee Loveless was born in Electra, to Myrtis Lowry Magee and Richard Bartlett Magee. Her mother and aunt were teachers in one-room schoolhouses in West Texas when they met their future husbands, early "wildcatters" in that area. The brothers-in-law formed a drilling business together, and Bart Magee built the Armilda Hotel in Electra, naming it after his daughter.
Jane to most, and Maggie to her oldest of friends, spent her childhood in Wichita Falls and graduated from Wichita Falls High School. She attended Southern Methodist University, where she was elected senior favorite and president of her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta. During the Texas Centennial of 1936, she was crowned Queen Cotton and featured in the Dallas Morning News as the five millionth visitor to the State Fair of Texas. After graduation from SMU, Jane moved to Fort Worth and taught elementary school in the Fort Worth Independent School District. She married Roy Jefferson Loveless Jr. in Fort Worth, where they raised their four children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1991.
Jane was active in the Fort Worth community as a member of the Fort Worth Garden Club and the Mary Isham Keith Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution, where she received the state award for Outstanding Good Citizen chairman. She was president of Canwick Club, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth and was past president of Beaux Arts and Etta Newby.
Jane was instrumental in establishing the Kappa Alpha Theta chapter on the Texas Christian University campus. She served as chapter adviser for many years and was twice elected alumnae president.
She was on the Board of Deacons at University Christian Church, having been a member for more than 50 years; she served on the Board of Women's Christian Fellowship, and most recently co-chaired the establishment of the Archives Room.
She will be remembered for her dedication and devotion to her family and friends, her enthusiasm and adventuresome and fun-loving spirit.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy J. Loveless Jr., and a son, Bart Loveless.

Biography: The New Georgia Encyclopedia
Wilson Lumpkin (1783-1870) Wilson Lumpkin was one of Georgia's most prominent political leaders of the antebellum period. After early service in local government and the state legislature, he was elected to Congress four times, serving 1815-17 and 1827-31; he resigned before serving his fourth term to run for the governorship of Georgia. Lumpkin was elected governor for two terms (1831-35), then went on to serve as a U.S. commissioner to the Cherokee Indians (1836-37), as a U.S. senator (1837-41), and as a surveyor of Georgia's boundaries and an advocate of improved transportation, especially as a general manager and key figure in the creation of the state's Western and Atlantic Railroad. Lumpkin was also a trustee of the University of Georgia in Athens. All of the public offices were important. In Lumpkin's eyes, however, his major accomplishment was his cardinal role in the removal of the Cherokee Indians from north Georgia. That effort and his choice of a political career were consistent with his background. Lumpkin was a child of the frontier. He was born in Virginia on January 14, 1783, the second son of Lucy Hopson and John Lumpkin, and his family moved when he was an infant to Wilkes County, to an area that became Oglethorpe County. This part of the state was marked by Indian-white tension and conflict, and Lumpkin recalled vividly in his memoir that his family was "exposed . . . to frequent depredations from hostile and savage Indian neighbors." Thus, he encountered the idea that the two cultures could not live together peacefully. His background also taught him the intertwined worlds of law and politics that would become his entrée into power. His father, in addition to engaging in business and farming, was a public figure, serving as justice of the peace, judge of the inferior court, and clerk of the superior court, the major Georgia trial court. Lumpkin acquired his political and legal education from working in his father's office, from the common schools, and from reading the classic books in his father's library by such writers as Adam Smith, Plutarch, Edward Gibbon, and David Hume. Upon attaining adulthood, Lumpkin married, farmed, continued to assist his father, and taught school in the community. In 1804 he was elected to the state legislature, and his lifelong political career began. Lumpkin described himself as a Democratic-Republican and a moderate. Thus, he generally supported states' rights against what he called federal "consolidation." He regretted his congressional votes in 1816 for some nationalistic measures, but he was also a staunch opponent of nullification and was important in Georgia's refusal to join South Carolina in its defiance of the federal Tariff Act of 1828. Within these parameters of political moderation, Lumpkin was a hard-working public administrator, thorough in his preparation and documentation of the various and diverse issues that confronted him in government service, whether these were voting on state or federal statutes, administration of the state penitentiary, improvements in the state's transportation system, the removal of the Cherokee, or other duties. Lumpkin's advocacy of removal was based on clear but harsh views of Indian-white relationships. First, based on his childhood and adult observations, he was convinced that Indians and whites could not peacefully coexist, for the whites would take advantage of the Indians. He was, however, no believer in innate white superiority, for he argued that the Cherokee, if removed to western territory and given time to develop, would acquire a cultural equality with whites and become a state, admitted to the Union on a par with other states. Thus, he advocated removal and, consistently with his states' rights views, the application of Georgia laws to the Cherokees in north Georgia. This application of Georgia laws included criminal laws, the distribution of Cherokee lands to white settlers by a lottery, and the imprisonment of northern missionaries who argued against removal. On two occasions, Lumpkin defied the U.S. Supreme Court on these matters. Lumpkin's views on removal were opposed by a majority of the Cherokee (led by chief John Ross), by prominent federal legislators, and by various Christian missionary societies, but he had more powerful allies in U.S. presidents Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren, Georgia public opinion, and majority U.S. congressional sentiment. Thus, removal triumphed, leading to the Cherokee removals west, the best-known of which was the tragic Trail of Tears (1838-39). Lumpkin lived until 1870, through Georgia's secession, which he had advocated, the Civil War (1861-65), and into the Reconstruction period. He was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Walker, and they had six surviving children: Lucy, Ann, Pleiades Orion, Wilson, William, and Elizabeth. His second wife was Annis Hopkins, and their children were Samuel, John Calhoun, and Martha. Among his historically important descendants were two of his great-grandsons, David C. Barrow Jr., chancellor of the University of Georgia (1906-25), and Barrow's older brother, M. Pope Barrow, an attorney who served an unexpired term in the U.S. Senate (1882-83). The south Georgia city of Lumpkin, Lumpkin County in north Georgia, Lumpkin Street in Athens, and Lumpkin House on the University of Georgia campus in Athens bear his name. He died in Athens on December 28, 1870, during Reconstruction, following the secession he had advocated. His farm in Athens was deeded to the university by his daughter and constitutes a significant portion of the current university campus. "William WESTON and his wife, Saran LUTEN, came to the "Fork" from Edenton, N. C., about 1750 and built their home not far from the station of Weston. A thicket on the Garrick Place marks the site. Here Mrs. Sarah WESTON, the "Widow WESTON," was living during the Revolution. Children of this couple were, it seems, Robert, who collected his mother's Revolutionary claims; William, who married Grace HIRONS and lived at Gum Tree near Congaree; James, a member of Capt. John FAIRCHILD's company of Rangers (1751); Thomas; Malachi; Grace, wife of Joel ADAMS. If Philip RAIFORD (III) married Judith WESTON, she most probably was a daughter of this couple. From William and Grace Hirons WESTON comes the well-known family of that name." (A History of Richland County South Carolina, Green, p. 62)
Revolutionary War service: "WESTON, WILLIAM. Thirty-four and sixty-four days as lieutenant under Col. TAYLOR. Also as lieutenant under Major Robert LYELL at Charlestown, 65 days, March 20-May 25, 1780. (A History of Richland County South Carolina, Green, p. 106)
"William WESTON states in his claim that he had served in Charles Town under Major Robert LYELL from March 20 to May 25, 1780." (A History of Richland County South Carolina, Green, p. 62)
WESTON, William - WILLIAM WESTON along with his wife, Sarah LUTEN, settled in the Richland County area around 1750. They came to the "Fork" from Edenton, North Carolina. They had at least seven children:
1. Robert WESTON
