Find A Grave Memorial# 125322991 records Sumpter Daniel Spann's burial in Section A East, Minden City Cemetery, Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana. the memorial presents this obituary:

Prof. S.D. Spann died at his home in this place last Saturday, August 5th. He had been sick several weeks and despite the fact that every thing was done for him that the best medical skill could accomplish or his loving family and friends could devise, he quietly passed away, surrounded by his family and friends. The interment took place Sunday morning in the Minden cemetery, Rev. E. Millar conducting the funeral service at the grave. The remains were followed to their final resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and sympathetic friends who assembled at the grave to pay a last sad tribute to the memory of the deceased. Mr. Spann was well known throughout this section and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was an experienced teacher and in his younger days ranked as one of the leading educator of north Louisiana. The deceased leaves a devoted wife and two grown children, Mrs. H.A. Barnes and Dr. W. H. Spann, to mourn his death, to whom the Signal tenders its profound condolence in the hour of their deep and poignant sorrow. [The Webster Signal, Minden, Louisiana, August 11, 1899]
The memorial also links to those for his wife, Mary Elizabeth Murrell Spann (1849 - 1925) and children, Corrie Lena Spann Barnes (1868 - 1935) and Walter H Spann (1871 - 1918).

Find A Grave Memorial# 125322897 records the burial of Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Spann in Section A East, Minden City Cemetery, Minden, Webster Parish, Louisiana. the memorial presents this obituary:

MRS. MARY ELIZABETH SPANN
On Friday morning, October 23, our town and community were surprised and saddened by the announcement that Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Spann was dead. She had been in failing health for a number of years, but none expected that so soon she would be called away from our midst. She went to the breakfast table that morning cheerful and happy, and seemingly feeling better than usual, and while at the table she passed suddenly and peacefully, held in the arms of her daughter, into the life beyond. But it was no surprise to her, for she had been a devoted Christian for many years and often in recent months had expressed herself as ready to go. Mrs. Spann was born and raised in Minden, and lived for fifty years at her home on Pennsylvania avenue. She was a daughter of Elizabeth Frazier and Drury Murrell, her parents being among the earliest settlers of Minden. On March 12, 1867, she was married to Professor S.D. Spann, one of the leading educators of Louisiana. To them were born two children, a son and a daughter; Doctor Walter Spann, a well-known dentist, who died October 12, 1918, and Mrs. Corrie L. Barnes, who still survives her, and had lived with her. Mrs. Mary G. Williamson of Shreveport is the only grandchild, and there is one great grandchild, little Le Vert Williamson, Jr., a bright and promising boy. Judge J.T. Watkins, former member of Congress from this district, was the brother-in-law of Mrs. Spann. She was converted and joined the Minden Baptist Church in 1881, during the pastorate of Rev. W.H. McGee, now of Lampasas, Texas. She loved her church and lived a devoted and exemplary Christian life, though for a number of years she was deprived by ill health of attending the services. Her faith and trust in her Lord were beautiful, and her hope for the life to come was unclouded. The funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, attended by a large circle of relatives and friends. The pastor of the church, Rev. D.C. Freeman conducted the services, and based on his message of comfort on the words of Psalm 116:13; "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints." The pulpit and casket were covered with a profusion of beautiful flowers, the gifts of loved ones and friends. Her body was laid to rest beside that of her husband to await the glad morning of the Resurrection.[The Webster Signal, Minden, Louisiana, October 29, 1925]
Inscription:
"Asleep in Jesus!! peaceful rest,
Whose waking is supremely blest."
the memorial also links to those of her parents, Drury Murrell (1812 - 1884) and Elizabeth Frazier Murrell (1823 - 1894); her husband, Sumpter D Spann (1843 - 1899); her children, Corrie Lena Spann Barnes (1868 - 1935) and Walter H Spann (1871 - 1918); and siblings, Georgia G Murrell Barnes (1846 - 1885), D B Murrell (1851 - 1854), and Harland Murrell (1854 - 1861).

General Notes: Husband - Washington L. TRAMMELL

In the late summer of 1850, a census taker visited a TRAMMELL family living in Fairfax County, Virginia. Head of this family was Washington TRAMMELL . He was a 73 year old farmer who had been born in Virginia. Living with him was Washington TRAMMELL age (hard to read but looks like 34), Margaret TRAMMELL age 32 or 38, and George TRAMMELL 30. All were born in Virginia. On the next farm lived the family of ??? (might have been John TRAMMELL , age 44, Jane (wife?) 27, Eliz 8, Jane 7, John 4 and Robert 2. (census page 174).
I have traced back from my father all the way to Washington. I have most all of the info on the censuses. Washington was the father of Elizabeth (Mrs. Hugh West GUNNELL). I have her baptismal record when she converted to Catholicism. It lists her mother as Elizabeth Nalley. I haven't found any info on her. I did find a personal property record in 1795 where one of the Gerrards paid a tax on Washington and Phillip TRAMMELL as "titheable Males." I am told you paid a tax on all males over 16. I have found evidence that Phillip is the son of Gerrard TRAMMELL Jr., so I am trying to find some documentation that Washington was also the son of Gerrard Jr. I have his (Washington TRAMMELL's) death record in Fairfax in 1870, stating he was 93 years old. Here are some notes from my Eaton Atlas of Westmoreland. I could xerox the text pages if you wished. Mostly, the book is a brief but wonderful land grant depiction of early holdings. It covers the Richard Lee plantation, where William Gunnell, Martha, Mary, and young William were indentured to Lee .. though by 1729 they had established themselves in now-Fairfax County.
The "Historical Atlas of Westmoreland County Virginia" by David W. Eaton, The Dietz Press, Richmond, Virginia, c. 1942:

page 40: 1659 gives an excellent account of Presley/Neale: Lt. Daniel Neale an Irish Protestant was in Northumberland: sons Daniel, Christopher,Charles. Daniel Neale, son of Daniel Neale, born c1680; died there 1710; "He married Ursula Presley, daughter of Col. William Presley, and sister of Capt. His will, probated 1713, devises to his son Presly Neale "all the land on which I now live". ...Presley Neale, son of Daniel and Ursula, of Fairfax County, Va., date of birth unknown, died 1749. He served as sub-sheriff of Westmoreland County, owned estates in Fairfax, Westmoreland and Northumberland counties. In his will he named his wife Margaret and children, Daniel, Elizabeth, Ann, Shapleigh, Richard and Jemima; all of the children were under age....Jemima was to be her own mistress at the age of fourteen. ........ Some DAR applications submitted by descendants of James Nelson and his second wife Margaret Daniel Turner have been proven to be incorrect and records have been "flagged" at DAR. Some descendants of James Nelson and his second wife Margaret Daniel Turner claimed Revolutionary War Patriot Thomas Woodward as an ancestor. As stated above, Thomas Woodward's daughter Margaret was James Nelson's first wife and they had one son named Samuel. This record, provided by Nelson McLeod of South Carolina, descendant of James Nelson, Sr. of Orange County, North Carolina, later Fairfield District, South Carolina, husband of Margaret Daniel Turner, has provided the first strong indicator of who married Margaret O'Daniel, daughter of John O'Daniel of Fairfax County, Virginia. I also believe, but have no proof, that James Nelson (17??-1835), born in Orange County, NC, who was living in Fairfield County, SC, near Thomas Nelson, was Thomas's brother or cousin. Both married into theWoodward family: Thomas Nelson married Susannah Woodward. James Nelson married Margaret Woodward, daughter of Thomas Woodward ("the Regulator") and his first wife Jemima Collins. James Nelson's will, proved 3 August 1835, lists the following family names: wife, Margaret; sons, Jesse, Daniel, John, and Thomas; daughters, Mary Kennedy, Catherine Delenney, and Harriet Shedd.
Thomas Nelson, Sr., moved his Scotch-Irish family in to the area of what is today known as Rutherfordton, North Carolina sometime prior to1745, where Thomas Nelson, Jr. was born on November 25, 1745. The family moved to Fairfield District, South Carolina, circa 1750, probably because of Indian uprisings in that area which killed a number of white settlers in Western North Carolina. The Thomas Nelson, father and son, served in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Circa 1799, Thomas Nelson, Jr. married Susannah Woodward, of the family of Thomas Woodward, "The Regulator", a captain in the South Carolina Militia.
I am a descendant of the sister of the Thomas Nelson who married Susannah Woodward. Her name was Nancy Precilla Nelson. She married Phillip Mathews and died in Crawford Co., GA in 1850. I'm searching for info on their father, Thomas Nelson, Sr. I have an article from a book published by the Pike Co. GA historical society which says that both Thomas Sr. and Jr. served in the Rev. War but can find no other info. Thomas Jr. lived to over 100 and split 100 rails to celebrate his100th birthday.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret O'DANIEL

Margaret O'DANIEL was a daughter of John O'DANIEL and Elizabeth MOXLEY of Fairfax County, Virginia. Her family dropped the O', becoming DANIEL during the mid to late 1700s. Her father is often found as John DANIEL in Fairfax County records. Margaret's birth date is thought to be about 1762.

Margaret married _____ TURNER before 1780. They had a son, William. William's father died before 1788 when the widow Margaret Daniel Turner married second James Nelson in Fairfield District, South Carolina, per an 1845 deposition by their son Jesse Nelson to a Fairfield County court. Margaret was James' second wife. He was first married to Margaret Woodward, daughter of Thomas Woodward, The Regulator, and Jemima Collins.

In 1798, Margaret's father wrote his last will & testament using the O'DANIEL surname for himself and his sons. In his will, John wrote, "I give and bequeath to my daughter Margaret NELSON Negro Beck and her increase to her and her Heirs forever." He died in 1799. The estate wasn't settled until 1807, the last known use of our O'Daniel in Virginia.

In the 1800 census of Fairfield District, James Nelson's wife is marked as age 26-45, born between 1756 and 1774. In the 1830 census of Fairfield District, South Carolina, James' wife was marked as a female age 60-70, born between 1760 and 1770.

That Margaret was a daughter of John Daniel of Fairfax County, had first married a Turner, had a son, William Turner, in Fairfax County, and in 1800 was the wife of James Nelson of Fairfield County, South Carolina is proven by this record:
"James and Margaret Nelson of State of South Carolina, District of Fairfield, power of attorney to our dutiful son William Turner of State of Virginia & County of Fairfax, Carpenter, to ask for and demand of John Daniel of the State of Virginia and County of Fairfax the sum of money left by the said John Daniel as a Legacy to the said Margaret Nelson (late Margaret Daniel) or other goods & chattles or ____ to ___ __ ___ to the share of her the said Margaret Nelson of the estate of her father the said John Daniel deceased...3 July 1800.
Jas Nelson (N) (LS), Marg. Nelson (X), Wit: Wm. Robertson, Senior; William Robertson Jur." [Fairfield County Deed Book N, Pages 54-55 (SC Archives Microfilm C301). As shared by JoAnn "Jodi" Cooper Killen]
[NOTE: The Robertson witnessess were also from Fairfax County, Virginia.]

Margaret's son, William Turner, is believed to be the subject of this newspaper advertisement in the Alexandria Times, November 25, 1800:
"Six Pence Reward. RAN away on the 15th inftant, an apprentice lad named WILLIAM TURNER. He is 20 years and 7 months old, is about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high; had on a light coloured cloth coatee, caffimer waiftcoat and narkeen[?] pantaloons. Whoever delivers the faid apprentice to me, fhall receive the above reward and no charges. Abel Blakeney. Nov. 24."
William ran away about 5 months after the power of attorney to "our dutiful son William Turner", carpenter, by James Nelson and Margaret Daniel Turner Nelson. William Turner, age 20 yrs, 6 mos. was born then about April 1780 and was apprenticed within the extended O'Daniel family. Abel Blakeney's second wife was Mary O'Daniel, niece of Margaret Daniel Nelson, granddaughter of John O'Daniel, Sr, daughter of John O'Daniel, Jr., who died before 1798. Offering only a six pence reward, Abel may not have been concerned about having William returned. Perhaps he knew where William went and was fulfilling his responsibility for William by publishing notice and a reward.

Margaret and James Nelson lived on a plantation on Mill Creek, Fairfield District, South Carolina, about four miles from Winnsborough. He was living there when called into service during the Revolutionary War and was living there in 1832 when he made depostion of his service. James died May 28, 1835.

Margaret had nine children by James Nelson: Jesse, Mary, Catherine, Harriet, Thomas, John, Daniel, and James. She was step-mother of Samuel Nelson, James' son by his first wife, Margaret Woodward.

In James' Will, he devised "to my beloved wife Margaret Nelson the plantation or tract of land on which I reside Supposed to Contain four hundred acres, more or less, exceptiong thereout a Mill Seat and fifteen Acres above the place where he Shall erect the dam to be measured therefrom up the Creek on each side thereof for my son Jesse his heirs and assigns forever- The devise of the Said tract to my said Wife to be for and during the term of her natural life and at her death Idevise the Same Subject to the above exception to my Son Daniel his heirs. and assigns forever. I bequeath to my said Wife for and during the term of her Natural life four feather beds, bedsteads & furniture all my household and kitchen furniture of every kind and description Also all my slaves to wit Abram, Peter, Sarah, Sam, Adam, Jack, Jim, Phoebe and her two female children Serena and Caroline, and five of the best Cows and Calves all the Stock of hogs and sheep, horses & mules, my wagon, cart, gears, and all the plantation tools and implments of husbandry; my Said Wife to have the entire disposal of Crops and the proceeds of Same. I direct however that My Son Jesse shall have the management of the planting interest during her life, and be allowed to retain or receive a liberal compensation for his Services. If a crop Should be Commenced at the time of my decease the Same shall be Considered as included in the above devise of land to my Wife."

On 28 March 1846, in Fairfield District, South Carolina, James and Margaret Nelson's son, Jesse Nelson, age 55, declared in open court deposition that James Nelson married Margaret Turner in 1788 and were husband and wife until James died on 28 May 1835 and that his widow Margaret did not remarry and died 23 or 24 July 1845.
