Philip WRAYFORD was born about 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He was christened on 2 Dec 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He died about 1724 in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He came to Virginia from Bermuda , prior to 1681 for he was granted 350 acres in April, 1681 in Isle of Wight, Virginia as a reward for importing seven settlers who presumably were his indentured servants. His name is spelled WRAYFORD on the grant and RAYFORD in his will. His Will was probated 12/28/1724. Philip and his wife Sarah were the original emigrants and they settled in the Isle of Wright. ( History of Richland Co., p 55) A William BODDIE bought 150 acres from Philip and Sarah on March 4th, 1687. Philip died in North Carolina. (Sou. Hist. Fam. Vol 1 by Boddie)
"Philip RAIFORD arrived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia before 1680. He died there in 1724. After many years of research, the author has concluded that this Philip was the only bearer of the RAIFORD name to migrate to the American mainland, and that it is highly probable that the entire RAIFORD clan in America can trace its ancestry to him."
"There is also recorded in the Isle of Wight, Virginia, Will and Deed Book, Volume 1, Part 2, page 482, an indenture between "Phillip RAYFORD" and Thomas MANDUE for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 6th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWN and George PIERCE. It was pledged in court on the 9th of June 1682, and ordered to be recorded. On page 467 of this same volume, there appears an indenture between George and Anne PIERCE and "Phillip RAYFORD" for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 9th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWNE and Thomas MANDUE. It was pledged in court on the 20th of October 1685, and ordered to be recorded. On page 596 of this same volume, "Phillip RAIFORD sells to Thomas HARRIS 150 acres, part of a pat. of 350 acres granted Phillip RAIFORD, 23 Apl., 1681. Sarah his wife signs. Teste, John BROWN, Phillip MECONDINE."*. This indenture is dated the 9th of February 1687, and was witnessed by John BROWN and Philip MECCONDINE. Herein was mentioned, for the first time, a wife of Philip RAIFORD, they probably having been married between October 9, 1681 and February 9, 1687."

Born: 1764 - South Carolina Christened: Died: Buried:
General Notes: Husband -
Moses KIRKLAND married Patience RAIFORD, daughter of Philip RAIFORD III and Sarah KINCHEN. Moses was a loyalist who campaigned against this war of independence saying , "If this dispute becomes serious, the people of South Carolina shall feel the weight of my influence." He resigned his commission in the South Carolina militia (Captain) and to the utmost of his power , encouraged opposition to the measures of Congress.
He got involved with John STUART and John MOULTRIE in a British plot to coordinate an Indian uprising at the same time British naval and land troops attacked from the sea and from Florida but he was captured carrying the plans to Boston in 1775 and the plot was discovered. The Continental Congress published the plans to show the undecided Americans how barbaric the British were, as the Indians were likely to be indiscriminate, killing Whigs and Tories alike.
The following is a biography that appears in "Biographical Dictionary of South Carolina Representatives" on page 380 and 381:
Moses KIRKLAND an influential back country planter and mill owner who was in South Carolina by 1752 when he settled on the Wateree River. Shortly thereafter, he moved to the fork of the Broad and Saluda Rivers where he established a successful sawmill and gristmill and became proprietor of a ferry. By the time of the Revolution, he had accumulated over 3000 acres of land in the back country and had established himself of wealth and strong persuasion. In 1775, he sold his mills and moved to Turkey Creek in the Ninety Six District where he owned and operated a prosperous 95 acre indigo plantation.
As a leading entrepreneur in the back country, KIRKLAND was active in the Regulator movement which sought to restore law and order in the back parishes. A man of notorious character, he was not opposed to using unscrupulous means to gain his desired results. Rather rough in language and behavior, he involved himself in petitioning the Commons House for circuit courts and in vigilante type action which served to publicize the plight of the back country. As a result, he won election to the 28th Royal Assembly (1768) from St. James Goose Creek Parish, although he never qualified before the Assembly was dissolved. His election was made possible by the insistence of Saxe-Gotha and Beaver Creek residents that they had a right to vote in the St. James Goose Creek as newly drawn parish boundaries excluded them from St. Matthew Parish. Successful in their scheme, they cast their votes for Regulators and carried the parish. Despite his desire for justice in 1768. He had earlier in his career been involved in questionable and illegal activities. In the 1750's, he had been accused of selling liquor to the Catawba Indians and of harboring runaway slaves. During the sale of rum to the Indians, he admitted that he held the slaves but promised to return them to their owners. In 1770, his land grants in Saxe-Gotha Township were revoked due to his strong involvement in a fraudulent plot to steal land warrants in the township. Meanwhile he continued to hold local offices for he was a road commissioner in the back country (1765), a justice of the peace for Ninety Six District (1770, 1773, 1774, 1775) and for Orangeburg District (1774), and a deputy surveyor (1774)
In 1776, he was described as a "stout corpulent man between 50 and 60 years of age, about five feet ten inches high of a swarthy complexion" who dressed richly in velvet, and "whose vanity and ambition had not been sufficiently gratified by his countrymen." Commissioned by the Frist Provincial Congress in 1775 as a militia captain, he accepted it and occupied Fort Charlotte on the Savannah River. Because of jealousy of another's higher rank, Kirkland returned with his troop to Ninety Six District, where he deserted and joined the loyalist forces. He was successful in carrying his entire troop with him. After several skirmishes, an abortive attempt to capture Fort Charlotte and Augusta, and the threat of capture by Whigs, KIRKLAND offered to surrender if a full pardon were guaranteed. When this was not forthcoming, he fled to Charleston and was disguised and hidden aboard the British sloop of war Tamar. His willingness to change sides cast doubts upon his unswerving loyalty to the Crown. Arriving in St. Augustine in late 1775, he served as a messenger for John Stuart, Superintendent of Indian Affairs. En route to Boston, KIRKLAND was captured by the patriots and imprisoned in Philadelphia. He escaped in May, 1776 and returned to Florida in 1777 when he was appointed Deputy Superintendent to the Seminoles. In this capacity, he used his influence to persuade the Creeks to assist the British against the Americans. He also advised Sir Henry CLINTON in 1778 to instigate a slave rebellion in order to insure a British victory in the South. In 1778 and 1779, he led Tory refugees to Georgia. On 6 July 1780, he was commissioned a major and resumed command of a Tory regiment in Ninety Six District, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He resigned his militia duties because he was not promoted to brigadier general. Until July 1782, he resided in Savannah, and after the British evacuated the town, he moved to St. George Parish, Jamaica.
On August 19, 1783, the Assembly of the State of Georgia passed an Act of Attainder, Banishments and Confiscation that took from all known Loyalists, property they held in Georgia and banished them from the state. Moses KIRKLAND was among those named as a Loyalist.
KIRKLAND married twice. His first wife, a Carolinian, was Patience RAIFORD, daughter of Isaac RAIFORD. One son was born to this marriage, Moses (b. 1764?). While residing in Jamaica in 1783, he married his second wife, Catherine. Another son, Richard Bruce, was born to this union. In December 1787, Moses KIRKLAND was lost at sea while en route to England. His younger son appealed to the Crown in the name of his deceased father for loss of property which included 11,460 acres of land, stretching from the Santee River in South Carolina to the Tombigbee River in Alabama, 36 slaves and personal property and notes valued at L 3,407. 22. 10 sterling. His older son, Moses, petitioned the South Carolina government in 1799 for a return of his father's property which had been confiscated in 1782, and the state Senate granted a return of all lands not disposed of prior to the petition.
Note: In the above biography Patience RAIFORD was called the daughter of Isaac RAIFORD. Her father was Philip RAIFORD III according to information now discovered.

"Richard Kirkland of Truro Parish, Prince William Co., VA, gave Gift Deeds to two sons, first Edward in 1714, and second to Richard Snowden Kirkland in 1740, which proves a middle name he seldom used but passed on to his own son. KIRKLAND was on the 1742 list of eligible voter <http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/princewilliam/Pwc1742a.gif>s in Prince William Co., VA, but sold his land in Virginia on 15 Feb 1746 to follow his brother John to Granville Co., North Carolina, where both received land patents. Richard Snowden Kirkland and his wife MARY BROWN may have lived with John for a period of time while he applied for and awaited the Granville Grant he received in Granville Co. on 20 June 1748, to 300 acres of land "on Island Creek," where he had probably lived three years; the survey is found today in the NC State Archives, but not the grant.
He sold this 300 acres on 1 Sep 1749. Richard Snowden Kirkland had the distinction of being an original land owner in three colonies: Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
Kirklands were some of the earliest arrivals (about 1750) in the part of Camden District, Old Craven Co., SC, which became Fairfield and Kershaw Cos. They included RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND, his brothers EDWARD, ROBERT, WILLIAM and their children; and their brother JOHN's son FRANCIS KIRKLAND. 5 May 1752, the Precept date when Richard S. Kirkland went before the Colony's Council to ask for land for himself, wife, and 3 children from up north, 350 acres at foot of Wateree Creek, bordered on N. by Wateree River, SE by land laid out to RICHARD GREGGRIE and land laid out to JOSEPH GATES, and vacant, and the NW border is vacant. next step in the process was to await the official Survey, which took place on 27 July 1752, the Plat date when the land was surveyed and certified by the deputy surveyor. of course, the deputy surveyor notified his government, and on 11 May 1754 Richard's Grant date 350 acres was laid out for him "on the Wateree River, foot of Wateree Creek," "by George Hunter, His majesty's surveyor" under precept dated 5 May 1752 but survey not made until 27 Jul 1753. He sold the land. on 17 Aug 1753, Richard Kirkland of Craven Co. buys 567 acres of land on S. of land granted Samuel BACOT 6 Oct 1752 and certified 23 May 1749, bounded NE on said road, SE vacant and part on John TOD, Jr., and vacant. of the more famous (or infamous) of their sons was RICHARD SNOWDEN KIRKLAND's son MOSES Family 2", http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~madgenealogist/KirklandFamily2.html)
