General Notes: Husband - Cpl. Bright Damascus POSEY

Bright Damascus "B. D." POSEY, the third son of Henry W. POSEY and Louiza Constanza DANIELL, was born in 1853 in Georgia, probably Baldwin County. Louisa married Henry W. in 1847. His older brothers, Fernanda (Fernando) and Henry A. are named in the 1850 census of Baldwin County, Georgia. Their father died before 13 Jan 1857.

"Georgia, Baldwin County: John F. CALLAWAY makes application for letters of guardianship... of Phinander[*] and Phinasus[*] POSEY, minors of H. W. POSEY... John Hammond, Ordinary." (Tuesday, December 27, 1859) [Milledgeville Georgia Newspaper Clippings (Southern Recorder), Volume X, 1857-1861, Tad Evans, p. 238]
[*Names should be Fernando and Damascus POSEY, sons of Henry W. POSEY and Louisa Constanza DANIELL. Louisa married second John Francis Marrion CALLAWAY, between 1858 and 1861.]

Neither Louisa, or her children have been found in the 1860 census.

In 1870 Baldwin County, Damascus POSEY, 16, is in the home of Leonidas and Emily K. CALLAWAY. Leonidas is a younger brother of John Francis Marion CALLAWAY. His brother Henry A. lives with Louisa's brother, Arthur R. DANIELL (her neighbor in the 1850 census). Fernando has married. By 1880, Louisa and John Francis Marion CALLAWAY have six children.
1870 U.S. Census, Georgia, Baldwin County, Milledgeville P O, 1 June 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 134 Page: 214: 75 75 CALLAWAY, Leonidas 42 M W Tavern ret 8500 4000 GA; -- Emily K. 30 F W Keeping house GA; -- John A. 11 M W At school GA; -- Richard C. 30 M W Clerk in store GA; POSEY Damascus 16 M W Clerk in store GA. (Note: Leonidas is indexed as "Louisa" in the 1870 Census.)

On the company roll of the "Salem Grays" published in the Union and Recorder, Milledgeville, Georgia, Oct. 14, 1874, page 3 are:
DANIEL, J. R. - 1st Sgt. [James R., uncle of F. C. & B. D. POSEY, husband of Sarah Frances PUGH]
POSEY, F. C. - 2nd Sgt. [Fernando C., brother of B. D.]
POSEY, B. D. - 4th Corp'l. [Bright Damascus, brother of F. C.]
PUGH, Thos - Private
and others.

Damascus POSEY married Augusta MILLS on 27 MAY 1877, Hancock, Georgia (Film M713013 1876 - 1880 V. 7-8, labs.familysearch.org)

1880 U.S. Census, Hancock County, 113 Militia District, 1 June 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 150 Page: 260: 61 61 POSEY Damascus W M 26 M Farmer GA GA GA; -- Augusta W F 21 Wife M Keeping house GA GA GA; -- Leila W F 1 Dau GA GA GA. Two homes away is Martha VEAL, 55, widowed with 5 children, the youngest Sallie, 11, who is likely the future spouse of John Lewis TERRY.

Jesse Damascus DANIELL, Louisa's grandnephew born in 1891, a grandson of Louisa's brother, Robert T., appears to have been named for Louisa's father, Jesse DANIELL, and her son, Bright Damascus POSEY.

1900 U.S. Census, Hancock County, 117 Militia District, 1 June 1900; Series: T623 Roll: 203 Page: 160: 88 88 POSEY Bright D. Head W M Nov 1847 52 M 23 GA -- -- Farmer; -- Augusta _. "Bright Damascus" is consistently born about 1854 per his age in all censuses, except here where he is 52, 6 years older than the expected 46. There are markovers on Bright's year of birth and age, perhaps confusing the numbers for his age and birth year.

General Notes: Wife - Elizabeth MIMS

Elizabeth was the first wife of Artemus WATSON. She is buried in the Watson family enclosure in the Ridge Spring Cemetery, Ridge Springs, Saluda County, South Carolina. Her stone shows "In memory of Elizabeth, wife of Artimus Watson. Born 11/29/1809, Died in 1821". According to these dates, Elizabeth was no more than 13 when she died.

"15. ARTEMUS4 WATSON (ELIJAH3, MARTHA2, JOHN ELIJAH1) was born March 14, 1801. He married (1) LUCRETIA DANIEL. He married (2) ELIZABETH MIMS." (from http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Shores/8816/watsons.htm) indicates that Elizabeth was his second wife; it appears from the cemetery information, that she had to be his first wife, dying to young to be the mother of all his children.

General Notes: Husband - Alvurn MITCHELL

Alvurn MITCHELL, named in the History of Hancock County, Georgia, is not with his family in 1850 Barbour County, Alabama and is presumed to have died young.

Another possibility offered by Tuck Wilson:
"I carry Abraham Hill Mitchell and a William Mitchell on my list of children as possibles because I have seen them listed so in "Mitchell Descendants" [http://jrshelby/genmap/mitchell.htm] but they are not documented.
Jourdan Mitchell is presumably dead by 1850 as Julia is head of household, age 35 with the four children, Abraham 16, Martha 14, Sarah 12, Jourdan 10. No evidence that thay had a child named Alvurn and I think Elizabeth Wiley Smith (or Fammie Mitchell who probably did the work) made a mistake. I think "Alvurn" is Abraham Hill Mitchell and he married Lizzie Persons.
There is a grave in the William Mitchell (grandfather) plot, Pinehill Cemetery, Auburn, Alabama :
Abram Mitchell - born in Walton County 4 Apr 1837, died 20 Jul 1889. I don't know if this is the same guy but I think it is because tombstone states he was born in Walton County and his parents wed in Walton County, and his grandparents owned the plots." Tuck
Compioler's note: I wonder about the possibility that handwritten "Abram" may have been interpreted as "Alvern" in the History of Hancock County? RLD.

Esteemed Cousin
It has become my painful duty to inform you of the Death of my beloved Sister Caroline.
Her voice is forever hushed and her eyes, closed in Death. Though she has departed from our sight, she shall never, no never be forgot, she has bid
Farewell to pain and sorrow
Farewell to sin and strife
In happiness and glory
She will spend and (sic) endless life.
Sister Caroline was taken sick the day the day you left here and died the 15th. Oh, that parting hour who can imagine the agony but we that ___ (ope?) our lovely and amiable Sisters
extended on their _____ beds see their eyes robed (sic) of it's luster and Death in all his terror _____ over there (sic) mortal remains. when her cheek on which had lately sat the bloom and fascination of youth, was steadily fixed apparently on the beauteous spheres of fair and more
delight full worlds whether her calm and gentle spirit seemed mediating its flight. She spoke a language worthy of her which the frozen toning of ink never learned to speak or mimic. 2 days before her death she got happy, there were some religious persons in the room she asked them to sing and pray for her but the Doctors would not allow them. She then shouted Hallalujah to the Lamb and sung
Come ye sinners, poor and needy.
She then prayed the most affecting prayer I ever heard in all my life, she said she wished to talk to us all and she did so, she talked very calm and deliberately she said she was going to die and leave us all, if it was God's wish that she should live she would be willing, as it was not she was willing said she did not know as she should ever be better prepared than she was. She asked for 3 glasses of water repeatedly this they refused she said she did not want the water so bad she only wanted it for the sake of the Father Son and Holy Ghost the Doctors even refused her this, she then said she would soon in Abraham's bosom where she should drink the fairest and best water
She then asked us all for 3 _____ apiece and told us she would die at 10 o'clock and sure enough the lovely and amiable Carolines voice was forever hushed her last words were be-lie-ve. She requested to me to write to all her friends and tell them she was gone to heaven and they must prepare to meet her there.
Cousin Emera It is very sickly in Jones County at this time Uncle Julius has had a very sever (sic) attack of the Billious fever we thought he would die but he is up and about but his little son is very sick. Uncle Cad has two children likely to die Harriotte and Augustus, Cousin Mary Mitchell is very sick. Cousin Mary Moughon is very sick and has lost a son. Mother keeps in good health but my health and Papa's has been very bad. Excuse bad writing and write soon. You must call by as you go on to Alabama. Present my love and complements to Mr. Thrasher and except (sic) the greatest share for yourself.
Ellen E. Mitchell
Mrs Emera A. E. Thrasher

Addendum DLW:
"Uncle Julius" - Julius C. B. Mitchell, the youngest of the clan, married to Catherine Daniell Mitchell. They only had one son of record, Americus Columbus Mitchell, b. 18 Nov 1819.
"Uncle Cad" - Augustus Cadwell Mitchell, also seen as Augustus George Cadwell Mitchell, known as Cadwell, one of the older Mitchell children. He married Elizabeth W. Hill (1797-1852). This letter is the first reference to his child, Augustus, whose full name may be Augustus John.
Cousin Mary Mitchell
Mary Mitchell, dau of William Mitchell & Martha Hill b. after 1808 marries JJ Slatter 1827 in Jones county - likely
Cousin Mary Moughon - Mary Sanford b. abt 1792, d. bef 1850, father was Jesse Sanford, mother was Martha Goodwin Mitchell. She married Thomas Moughon, b. 1787 in N. C. , died 1851 Jones County Georgia. Thomas and Mary were in Baldwin county in 1820, Jones in 1830 and 1850 (1840 not found.). Mary dies before 1850.
"Mother" - Elizabeth Wood, (1788 - aft.1850)
"Papa" - John Mitchell ( abt 1785 - 1841)
Ellen A. E. Mitchell - the author, Ellen Emeline Mitchell, b. abt 1812, d. 1837. She writes an amazing letter for someone about 14 years of age. She goes on to marry a William Moughon in Jones County 6 Feb 1828 and William dies in Jones County in 1830. I don't have the relationship of William to Thomas Moughon who marries Mary Sanford but there should be one.
Mrs. Emera E. Thrasher - the recipient, daughter of Dr. Thomas Mitchell and Mary "Polly" Wood

James Billingslea MITCHELL, son of Americus Columbus MITCHELL and Mary Elizabeth BILLINGSLEA, was born 28 July 1844 in Glennville, Alabama. He served as a First Lieutenant in the 34th Alabama Infantry in the War Between the States, although only 17 at the time. He was captured by Federal troops at the Battle of Missionary Ridge and was held as a prisoner of war until the close of the war. James graduated from the University of North Carolina and the Lebanon Law School of Tennessee. He was elected to a number of terms in the Alabama State Senate. While at Chapel Hill, James met Rebecca Stone RYAN, whom he married in 1869 and brought back to his home in Alabama.

The home of James Billingslea MITCHELL, built in Glennville, Alabama, was disassembled and moved to Seale, Alabama, on Russell County Highway 26 . It is now called the MITCHELL-FERRELL-POWELL HOUSE and given historical status.
Marker Dedication or Erection Date: January 1, 1988, Marker Text:

"Built in Glennville, Alabama by slave artisans in the early 1840's for James Billingslea and Rebecca Stone Mitchell. Moved by ox-cart and reassembled by free citizens at the present site in 1867 or 1869. Purchased in 1895 by Hugh Bennett and Jessie Elvira Screws Ferrell. Purchased and restored in 1978 by Vernon H. and Minnie D. Powell.
Erected by the Historic Chattahoochee Commission and The Ferrell Family, 1988."

(Note: There may be some discrepancy in the original year the home was built. James was born in 1844; Rebecca in 1846. They did not marry until 1869. If built for James and Rebecca, it was more likely built in the early 1870s, after slavery had been abolished, or the home was originally built for James' parents. RLD.)

John MITCHELL moved to Georgia with his father, John, and two brothers, Thomas and James, about 1785. He married Elizabeth WOOD, a daughter of General Solomon WOOD of Jefferson County, Georgia on 23 December 1810. His brother, Thomas married Elizabeth's sister, Mary. John later moved to Harris County, Georgia, dying there.

David Leon "Tuck" Wilson provides the below:
John3 Mitchell (John2, Thomas1) was born Bef. 1785 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, and died 1841 in Harris County, Georgia (Source: Cases in Law and Equity Supreme Court of the State of Georgia, Vol 17, p 52-
55, John Mitchell qualified as executor ... until his death in 1841.). He married Elizabeth Wood 23 Dec 1810 in Jasper County, Georgia, daughter of Solomon Wood and Elizabeth Eason. She was born 16 Jan 1788 in Georgia
(Source: Census of 1850, Harris County Georgia.), and died Aft. 1850.
Notes for John Mitchell:
John Mitchell was born between 1780 - 1790 (1840 Harris County Census). Family tradition is that the family had moved to Hancock County Georgia in 1785 and John is listed as being born in Virginia, so perhaps he was born between 1780 and 1785. I think I have his marriage record to Elizabeth Wood: John Mitchell to "Ann Wood" 23 Dec 1810, recorded in Jasper County Georgia.
The 1820 census lists two John MITCHELLs in Hancock County.

In the 1830 Jones Census, John is enumerated next to Julius C B Mitchell and a widow named Elizabeth Mitchell with many young children. (I think this Elizabeth could be Elizabeth Jourdan Mitchell, recent widow of James
Mitchell who died 1827-28 in Harris County) or Elizabeth Hill Mitchell, wife of Cadwell Mitchell.
John may have been the John Mitchell that built the Old Clinton Hotel there ca. 1820 (The History of Jones County by Williams). They did not stay long but moved to Harris County, Georgia (see White, "Historical Collections" p 493). He is in records shortly after 1830 in Harris County.
I have 2 letters from a Lucia or Lecia Mitchell that for many years I thought was a daughter of John Mitchell. She writes from Mulberry Grove in Harris County on Nov. 16, 1845, mentioning a sister "H" that I assumed was Henrietta. She mentioned Solon as if he was a part of the household. She also mentioned Kate who was combing her hair, and I assumed Kate was a sister and one of John Mitchell's lost children. In a second letter by Lucia or Lecia, written April 4, 1846, the family or part of it, has moved to Auburn, Alabama. There are seven known and seven unknown children, (Lucia was previously unknown) in this family so all of this is plausible. However, census data shows no girls the age of Kate and Lucia/Lecia. Elizabeth Wood Mitchell never moved to Alabama but lived with her son Solon in the 1850 Harris County Census.
Recently, I discoverd a tombstone in Auburn, Alabama (Pinehill Cemetery) of Volecia Drake. She is seen as Valencia, Volecia, and Volecia V. A. Mitchell in various trees. She is not listed in Fanny Mitchell's Mitchell
Genealogy found in "History of Hancock County" as a child of Cadwell but the following tombstone inscription should leave no doubt:
Volegia V A DRAKE, wife of John W. Drake, Daughter of Augustus G C & Elizabeth Mitchell 18 Dec. 1825 - 25 May 1960, Married 22 Feb. 1848, Born Jones Co., GA
Cadwell Mitchell died prior to the 1840 Census. By 1850, his wife Elizabeth Hill Mitchell had moved from Harris County, Georgia to Auburn, Macon County, Alabama, to be with all her daughters, all located in Macon County in 1850. Volecia married in 1848 to J. W. W. Drake and lived there until her death in 1860.
John Mitchell died in Harris County Georgia in 1841. He died testate but I couldn't find the will in the Harris County courthouse.

General Notes: Husband - Lt. John MITCHELL, RS-VA

1st Lieutenant John MITCHELL R. S. was born on August 25, 1748 in Surry County, Virginia. He died on January 3, 1804 in Hancock County, Georgia. John was an officer in the Revolutionary War. He served as a 1st Lieutenant with the 3rd Georgia from April 5, 1778 to October 1782. His sword is on exhibition at the Department of Archives and History, Montgomery, Alabama, donated by Mr. Peter Brannan.

John married Sarah THWEATT in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. She was born in Dinwiddie County.

1784 - John signed for 400 acres of land in Washington County, Georgia for his revolutionary service.

1785 - Around 1785, John moved to Washington County, Georgia with his brothers, Henry and Thomas. On August 17, 1785, he was granted 460 acres of land in Washington County "On Bounty." This area later became part of Hancock County.

"John MITCHELL came to Georgia with his two brothers, Henry and Thomas, and also with members of the family of his wife, Sarah THWEATT.
The first entry in the old Bible of his youngest son, Julius MITCHELL, reads: "John MITCHELL, Sr., born in State of Virginia 25th day of August 1748, died in Hancock County, Ga., 3rd day of January 1804 age 55 yrs 4 mo 9 days. The above was father of Julius C. B. MITCHELL. Sarah THWEATT, wife of John MITCHELL, was born in Virginia."

"There are various traditions which have been handed down in the different branches of the MITCHELL family regarding the part John MITCHELL took in the War of the Revolution. One account is that at one time, when the American cause seemed hopeless, the regiment to which he belonged deserted to the enemy, John MITCHELL alone remaining faithful to the cause of the Americans. It may have been only his company or part of the regiment, but there must be some truth in the story.
It was also said that some years later, when he was living in Georgia, he was offered 50 or 75 acres of land in hopes of gaining his support to the Yazoo Act. This was refused with scorn and he continued to use his influence, which seems to have had considerable weight in his section of the state, to have the act repealed. Two of his sons married daughters of General Solomon WOOD of Jefferson County, who also worked for its repeal. John MITCHELL was granted, on account of the part he took in the Revolution, land on both the Ogeechee and Oconee rivers.

John's home place was near Sparta, Georgia. He was married in Virginia and lived there for some years, several of his children being born in Dinwiddie County. Unfortunately, the records of Dinwiddie County and Washington County, Georgia were destroyed during the Civil War. He married Sarah, daughter of James THWEATT and Sarah STURTEVANT of Dinwiddie County, Virginia. Have not been able to get the date of her birth, death or marriage. The Bible of Julius MITCHELL family did not give it, and the other Bible was so badly worn that it could not be deciphered. There is an old THWEATT Bible which I heard gave her birth and marriage but, unfortunately, I could not locate it.
At the time of John MITCHELL's death he had ten living children. These children with their children were spoken of as 'The MITCHELL Clan' and it was said that, if you insulted one of them you angered all of them. One man once made the remark that "You had best be careful what you say about those Mitchells before any of the kin, it is like poking a hornet's nest with a short stick."

The names of the children and grandchildren of John MITCHELL were copied from an old manuscript made out by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Catherine MITCHELL, for her grandson James Billingslea MITCHELL. This paper is now in the possession of her great-grandson, Colonel William A. MITCHELL of West Point, N.Y." (History of Hancock County, Georgia)
Mrs. Catherine MITCHELL is Catherine B. DANIELL, daughter of Levi DANIELL and Martha Pearson COOK of Hancock County, Georgia.

General Notes: Wife - Sarah THWEATT

"Some GA Co. Records, Vol. I" by Rev Silas Emmett Lucas, Jr., Southern Historical Press, 1977, page 106: "James MITCHELL and John MITCHELL, Admnrs of Sarah MITCHELL, dec'd, and Henry MITCHELL and Robert RAINS Securities bond for $10,000 dated 7 July 1807." James and John, the administrators, were the two oldest sons of John and Sarah MITCHELL. Their son Henry was about 14 when Sarah died and not likely standing security. This Henry would have been the brother of Sarah's husband, John MITCHELL, who predeceased her.

Frances Matilda ODELL is said to be "of Laurens, South Carolina" in the Batesburg - Leesville Araea History. The 1860 census provides that she was born in Lexington District, South Carolina..

Frances Matilda's grave in the Mitchell Family Cemetery, Lexington, South Carolina, records her death in 1868.

Side node: In an interesting parallel family, the 1870 census lists a Frances MITCHEL [sic], 33, in Anderson County, South Carolina. John Andrew Jeter MITCHELL is not with her and has not been found in this census. While unlikely this would be Frances Matilda ODELL, William and Mary ages 13 and 11 fit the family as of 1860. Sallie, 8, would match up with John's daughter Sallie, 19, in the 1880 census of Lexington County.

Notes: Marriage

From "Sally1" letter in files of David Leon "Tuck" Wilson, written either 14 Feb 1847 or 18 Feb 1848: "You wrote to me that our cousin Julius was expected in Georgia. I made several inquiries though did not hear that he came in. I suppose now that he did not. Him (sic) and Rebecca were quite secret in their courtship, were they not? I know many suspected that he would, in time, but did not know he matter was settled."

Obituary: Mr. M. W. Sams' Death
He Dies Very Unexpectedly Sunday Morning
The sudden death of Mr. M. W. SAMS, Jr. Sunday morning was a great surprise and shock to his many friends. But few knew of Mr. SAMS' sickness, and none suspected its serious nature. His illness, which was pneunomia, was of short duration and from the beginning baffled the skill of the attending physician.
Mr. SAMS at his death was in the prime of his life and was a perfect picture of physical strength and manhood. Some fifteen years ago he was married to Miss MITCHELL, of Charleston, a relative of the late Col. Robt. A. ALSTON, who survives him.
Mr. SAMS at the time of his death held a position of responsibility and trust with the Western and Atlantic railroad, being in the main office at Atlanta, which place he has filled acceptably for many years past.
The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. WILSON, of the Episcopal church, Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the residence, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Decatur cemetery.

The Maggie MITCHELL who married Marion Washington SAMS, Jr. is Margaret Ann MITCHELL, daughter of Alexander Robert MITCHELL and his wife, Anne Rebecca MAGILL of Charleston, South Carolina. [Edwin Barry Speth, III, Margaret's great-grandson]

Maggie was widowed in 1895 and her two oldest children had died young.
