General Notes: Husband -

"C. D. McCUTCHEN, son of B. R. McCUTCHEN, was for eight years judge of the Cherokee Circuit." (History of Walker County, page 262). He was Colonel of the 4th Georgia Cavalry in the War between the States.

During the War Between the States, Cicero was a Ward Master in a Confederate hospital.

"Cicero Decature McCutchen was born in Hall County, Georgia on the date you show. He married Miss Frances Cornelia Kelly, daughter of Thomas and Phebe Kelly formerly of Wilkes County, North Carolina where Frances was born February 1834. They resided in the City of Dalton where he practiced law when the war began. He raised a company for cavalry service which was given the designation of Company F, 12th Georgia Cavalry. He was Captain of the company. There were not enough companies to form a regiment and their designation was changed to 23rd Battalion GA Cavalry, "Georgia Dragoons" on September 20, 1862. By January 5th, 1863 the battalion had recruited enough men to reach regimental strength at which time they were re-organized as the 4th Regiment (Avery's) Georgia Volunteer Cavalry, which they remained throughout the war. I have not found any record that shows him elevated to the rank of colonel. I believe this was an honorary title given to him after the war. [Bruce Howard]

I am not a descendant of any of the Kemp family - I do Civil War research and am looking for Thomas' and his brother John R.'s information for that purpose.
It's funny, you say he [Thomas Michael KEMP] married Elizabeth Raiford. His brother John R., who also fought in the war, married Julia C. Raiford in Mississippi. They later moved back to Hickman Co., Kentucky, where they are buried. Don

John R. KEMP, son of W. T. KEMP is age 16 in the 1860 census of Clinton, Hickman County, Kentucky.

John's older brother, Thomas Michael KEMP, was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama in May 1865 and soon after married Elizabeth "Bessie B." RAIFORD, daughter of Thomas Woodward RAIFORD and Sarah Caroline BARBEE of Marshall County, Mississippi. Five years later, on 26 October 1870 , John married Bessie B.'s younger sister, Julia Caroline RAIFORD.

After Thomas was paroled, he was probably making his way from Gainesville, Alabama back home to Kentucky when he reached Marshall County, Mississippi, a little southeast of Memphis, Tennessee, where he met and married Elizabeth "Bessie B." RAIFORD, daughter of Thomas Woodward RAIFORD and Sarah Caroline BARBEE, about 1865. Five years later, Michael's younger brother, John R. KEMP, would married Bessie B.'s younger sister, Julia Caroline RAIFORD.

General Notes: Husband -

"Elizabeth Susannah Kester married Joseph D. Reese. They had only one child, Mary Raiford Reese. Mary married 1st William H. Killingsworth and they had only one child. Her name was Frances Elizabeth Killingsworth. Frances married John Morgan Rawlinson. When I have more time, I'll check the Rawlinson information. I believe that one of their granddaughters was named Martha Maria. Mary R. Reese (Killingsworth) later married Gideon Jesse Garner and that's where my grandmother comes in. My great grandmother Marie Gertrude Garner (Jones) had three daughters. The youngest daughter was named Frances and was names after Frances Killingsworth (Rawlinson). Though Frances Killingsworth was a 1/2 sister to all of the Garner children, they were very close. They called her "Sister Frank" and almost each Garner sibling named a child Frances after Sister Frank.
I know that Jesse Killingsworth is the grandfather of Frances Killingsworth (Rawlinson). Green's book has her listed as daughter, but I downloaded his will from the SC archives site and it clearly says his granddaughter Frances Rawlinson. Frances Killingsworth married John Morgan Rawlinson before Jesse Killingsworth wrote his will. Also, Wm. H. Killingsworth died b/f Jesse wrote his will. I have wondered if Jesse Killingsworth's first wife was Elizabeth Fox, daughter of William Fox. Green's book pp 262 and 263." [Lee Radford, email, 1 Jul 2010]

"No. 419. Wm. H. KILLINGSWORTH. Jesse KILLINGSWORTH, adm., June 6, 1838. He left minor daughter, Frances, and a widow, who married Gideon GARNER before 1841." [History of Richland County, South Carolina, Green, p. 315]

General Notes: Wife -

Mary R. REESE, daughter of Joseph D. REESE, is named in the Last Will and Testament of Samuel SCOTT of Richland District, South Carolina, proved 1 October 1827. She was given "absolutely and unconditionally all the Negroes which I may be possessed of or to which I may have any title or Claim." Others receiving bequeaths were William W. KILLINGSWORTH; Francis R. KILLINGSWORTH; William DEVLIN; and Jesse REESE. Jesse and Joseph D. REESE were appointed executors. General Notes: Husband -

Philip WRAYFORD was born about 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He was christened on 2 Dec 1649 in Crediton, Devonshire, England. He died about 1724 in Isle of Wight, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He came to Virginia from Bermuda , prior to 1681 for he was granted 350 acres in April, 1681 in Isle of Wight, Virginia as a reward for importing seven settlers who presumably were his indentured servants. His name is spelled WRAYFORD on the grant and RAYFORD in his will. His Will was probated 12/28/1724. Philip and his wife Sarah were the original emigrants and they settled in the Isle of Wright. ( History of Richland Co., p 55) A William BODDIE bought 150 acres from Philip and Sarah on March 4th, 1687. Philip died in North Carolina. (Sou. Hist. Fam. Vol 1 by Boddie)

"Philip RAIFORD arrived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia before 1680. He died there in 1724. After many years of research, the author has concluded that this Philip was the only bearer of the RAIFORD name to migrate to the American mainland, and that it is highly probable that the entire RAIFORD clan in America can trace its ancestry to him."
"There is also recorded in the Isle of Wight, Virginia, Will and Deed Book, Volume 1, Part 2, page 482, an indenture between "Phillip RAYFORD" and Thomas MANDUE for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 6th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWN and George PIERCE. It was pledged in court on the 9th of June 1682, and ordered to be recorded. On page 467 of this same volume, there appears an indenture between George and Anne PIERCE and "Phillip RAYFORD" for the sale of land. This indenture is dated the 9th of October 1681, and was witnessed by John BROWNE and Thomas MANDUE. It was pledged in court on the 20th of October 1685, and ordered to be recorded. On page 596 of this same volume, "Phillip RAIFORD sells to Thomas HARRIS 150 acres, part of a pat. of 350 acres granted Phillip RAIFORD, 23 Apl., 1681. Sarah his wife signs. Teste, John BROWN, Phillip MECONDINE."*. This indenture is dated the 9th of February 1687, and was witnessed by John BROWN and Philip MECCONDINE. Herein was mentioned, for the first time, a wife of Philip RAIFORD, they probably having been married between October 9, 1681 and February 9, 1687."
