General Notes: Husband - Lucas CASADY

Lucas CASADY is first known to this researcher from the CASADY family history compiled by Etta Mae CASADY, wife of Glenn James DITMORE, and her sister, Lula Bird CASADY, wife of John Thomas Lyles LAWRENCE. Per Etta's handwritten notes, Lucas CASADY immigrated from Ireland to Eastern Canada in 1810. He and wife, Nancy REYNOLDS, said to have been born in Scotland, emigrated from Canada to the U.S. and settled in Moss Run, Ohio. Etta stated that Lucas and Nancy's son, William Jackson CASADY, Etta's grandfather, was the youngest in the family of four children and wrote only of William's descendants, and provided enough information to lead others to document her immigrant progenitors and their descendants. "Moss Run" lead us to Washington County, Ohio. Censuses there tell a story, but much is still to be learned.

Lucas' surname is found as CASADA, CASSADY, and CASADY in various records. Other family sources say Lucas' wife's maiden name may have been MORTON or SHERMAN. Her maiden name has not been confirmed.

Etta and Lula CASADY wrote that Lucas and Nancy came from Ireland and Scotland, respectively, migrated to Canada then to OH. They were probably married abt 1811. Their first child, Morton, was born in Canada in 1813, at least per the 1850 census, placing Lucas and Nancy in Canada before and until or after 1813. Their second child, George Perry, was born in Pennsylvania in 1815. When they came out of Canada they went first to Pennsylvania (if not through New York also), had Morton and then moved on to Ohio. How does any of that fit with the MORTON or SHERMAN family locations? Were Lucas and Nancy married before coming to Canada or married in Canada?

As of 8 March 2007, the earliest record of Lucas CASADY and family is the 1820 census. Lucas is named in the 1820, 30, and 40 censuses as CASADA; the enumerators' handwriting is clear. In 1820 they have four children under the age of ten in their home, assumed to be their own. In the 1850 census, Nancy's age is 61; by that, she was 31 in 1820. Considering four children under 10 in 1820, Lucas and Nancy would have married about 1809.

NOTE: Mary, born about 1819, is not proven to be a daughter of Lucas and Nancy, but circumstantial evidence at this point makes it very likely. RLD
NOTE: Lucas' son, William Jackson, born 1829, would marry Margaret A. CLARK, daughter of Alexander CLARK, possibly a son of Jeptha, over 45. Speculation based on location and age.

Lucas and Nancy appear to have had at least eight children. Based on the variance of ages in enumerations in 1830 and 1840 censuses, the possibility of a fourth daughter has been considered. Nancy E. would have been 5-9 in 1830 (should have been) and 15-19 in 1840. She is age "32 years, 6 months" at her death on 10 January 1855 which computes to born between 10 June and 9 July 1822. The problem here, of course, is where is Nancy in 1830 if there was a fourth daughter?

In the 1830 census, Lucas and Nancy's household has five boys ranging in age from one to about 17, and three girls under 15. Living with them is an unknown male age 50-60.

Diadamia CASADY married Samuel DYE in March 1838; however, divorce records show she left him on 21 December 1838, likely making her the female 20-30 in this enumeration, leaving Mary(?) to be the female 15-20. In the presidentail campaign of 1844 between James K. Polk and Henry Clay, Lucas supported Henry Clay. Under the headline "More Renuncations In Ohio", "Lucius Cassady" is among those named among "twenty of the stern and fearless yeomenry of Washington County" who "give our whole strength for Clay and Frelingbuysen. Our motto is 'principles not men.'" [The Daily National Intelligencer, Washington, District of Columbia, Monday, September 30, 1844, Page 2]

Researcher Millie Covey Fry has generously provided significant information from her work on Lucas and Nancy CASSADY family.

"The birthplace of Lucas CASSADY was given as Canada and New York in census records of his children. The birthplace of Nancy CASSADY has been given as Canada, New York, and Connecticut. I have assumed that they must have lived near the Canada/New York border. Morton CASSADY's birthplace is listed as Canada and he was born about 1813. George Perry CASSADY's birthplace is listed as Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was born March 4, 1814 or 1815. If these dates are accurate, it appears that Lucas and Nancy CASSADY left Canada following the birth of Morton about 1813."

"Grace Covey Moncur Lauer (the daughter of Eunice CASSADY and Oren COVEY) (Millie Fry's aunt) once referred to Lucas as "Aaron CASSADY" - I'm not sure why." (Millie Covey Fry)

"The History of Washington County (1881) states that Lucas CASSADY settled in Warren Township, Washington Co., OH in 1819 and later moved to Lawrence Township, about one mile below the mouth of Fifteen, in 1821. He was killed by accident in 1850 in Maysville, KY. I tried to find out information concerning his death in Kentucky but haven't found anything yet. And I don't know where Lucas CASSADY is buried. He did not leave a will and there isn't an estate settlement in Washington County." (Millie Covey Fry)

Lucas is named on the Washington County Tax Roll in 1847. He may have died as early as 1848. His wife Nancy is listed on the Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio tax rolls in 1849 and 1850. Lucas is not listed. In 1850 Nancy is head of household with her son, William, 20, in Lawrence, Washington County, Ohio.

General Notes: Wife - Nancy --?--

The wife of Lucas CASADY was Ann "Nancy", maiden name uncertain. Family researchers from various descendant lines say she was a REYNOLDS, SHERMAN or MORTON. Of the three surnames, "Morton" is the only one as a given name among the children of Lucas and Nancy Casady. A grandson by Morton CASSADY has Morton as a middle name..

Nancy CASSADY is age 61, born in Canada, as listed in the 1850 census of Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio.

Compilations by Etta Mae CASADY, descendant of William Jackson CASADY, say Lucas' wife was Nancy REYNOLDS. Etta wrote that Lucas was from Ireland and Nancy from Scotland and that they immigrated to Canada and then to Moss Run, Washington County, Ohio. Her notes said they had four children, but named only William Jackson CASADY, Etta's great-grandfather.

"The birthplace of Nancy CASSADY has been given as Canada, New York, and Connecticut. I have assumed that they must have lived near the Canada / New York border."
"My aunt Grace Covey Moncur Lauer (the daughter of Eunice CASSADY and Oren Covey) would be 102 years old if alive. She was born and raised in eastern Washington County, OH and assisted my with Covey, Cassady, and Snodgrass family research as early as 1969. These families lived very close to each other in Lawrence Township - all were there by about 1820. Grace believed that Nancy CASSADY's maiden name was SHERMAN. Nancy CASSADY was born in May 1787. Last week I located a summary of a brief obit in the Marietta Republican, June 8, 1858 and it stated: "May 31, 1858 Nancy CASSADY, in her 70th year, died in Lawrence Township at the residence of her son, George CASSADY. She was the widow of Lucas CASSADY." (Millie Covey Fry, 03/07/2007)

"Some people believe Nancy's maiden name was MORTON because her son was named Morton CASSADY. Several years ago, Gary Ledwidge of California was looking into a possible connection between Nancy Morton and John Morton who signed the Declaration of Independence." (Millie Covey Fry, 03/07/2007)
"[George Perry Cassady] his mother's people - Morton - were of much education and refinement. Levi P. Morton of N.Y. was a connection - they lived in Canada during French and Indian War - then to N.Y. state." [Hoff file, pp. 146-149, Surname Files, Local History and Genealogy Library, Washington County Public Library, Marietta, OH. Provided by Millie Covey Fry.]
NOTE: The French and Indian War was fought from 1754 to 1763. Both Lucas and Ann/Nancy were born well after that conflict ended. RLD]

Nancy was widowed before the 1850 census was taken. She may have been widowed as early as 1848. She is listed on the Lawrence Township, Washington County, Ohio tax rolls in 1849 and 1850. Her husband Lucas is not listed.

General Notes: Husband - Abraham Harvey PARKER, Jr.

Abraham Harvey Parker, Jr.'s partial biography, to 1928, is in the History of Kentucky, The Blue Grass State. Volume IV Illustrated. The S. J. Clarke Publishing Company, Chicago - Louisville, 1928. (Lewis Co). and posted at http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.kentucky.bios/11113/mb.ashx -

ABRAHAM HARVEY PARKER, Jr., a successful lawyer, is practicing in Vanceburg and ably discharges the duties of county attorney. He was born August 1, 1893, in Maysville, Kentucky, and is a son of Abraham Harvey and Lilly (Halbert) Parker. His mother was born in Lewis county, this state, and is a sister of Judge William C. Halbert, of Vanceburg, who presides over the circuit court of the twentieth judicial district. He has filled this office since 1910 and was formerly a member of the state legislature. Mrs. Parker's father, William C. Halbert, was an able lawyer who practiced for many years in Vanceburg. He served for four years in the state senate and owing to his efforts in the county seat was removed from Clarksburg to Vanceburg. He gave the site for the courthouse and jail to the county and was the father of the turnpike road system and the bridge law of Lewis county. His grandfather, Isaac Halbert, was a native of Scotland and became one of the colonial settlers of Virginia. He served in the Revolutionary war and in 1785 migrated to Kentucky. He was a friend of Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton and bore his part in the struggle to wrest the new country of his adoption from the Indians and to make it a state. In 1799 he purchased four thousand, nine hundred acres of land on Salt Lick creek and in 1800 he built the third house erected in Lewis county. Six of his sons were volunteer soldiers in the War of 1812 and three of them participated in the battle of the Thames, while another was with Perry's fleet during the memorable naval engagement on Lake Erie. Abraham H. Parker, Sr., was born in Virginia and located in Lewis county, Kentucky, in 1895. He became one of its leading attorneys and practiced in Vanceburg until 1924, when he retired from the profession.
His son, Abraham H. Parker, Jr., attended the public schools of Vanceburg and Riverside Seminary. Natural predilection and inherited tendency inclined him toward the law and his studies were directed by his father and Judge Halbert, his maternal uncle. He was admitted to the bar in 1914 and for ten years he was associated with his father as junior member of the firm of Parker & Parker. Since 1924 he has practiced alone and his clientele is large and important. He is well versed in the minutiae of the law and his arguments are lucid, cogent and always to the point.
Mr. Parker was married on Christmas day of 1921 to Miss Grace Krouse, a daughter of William and Mary Krouse, of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Grace Laurel, the only child of this union, was born May 28, 1923.
In response to the call to the colors Mr. Parker enlisted May 28, 1917, in the United States army and was sent to Camp Taylor near Louisville, Kentucky. He was afterward stationed at Camp Gordon near Atlanta, Georgia, and on December 13, 1917, was honorably discharged, at which time he was a first sergeant in the United States Infantry. He is an adherent of the republican party and in September, 1923, was appointed to complete the unexpired term of J. P. Strother, county attorney. Mr. Parker was elected to the office in the fall of 1925 for the full term of four years and is making an excellent record as a public prosecutor, proving fearless, conscientious and efficient in the discharge of his duties. He belongs to the American Legion and is a member of the Lewis County and Kentucky State Bar Association. He has a high conception of the dignity and responsibility of his profession and ably sustains the tradition of the family.

Harvy Parker, Jr., registered for the 1917-1918 Draft in Lewis County, Kentucky on 5 June 1917. He was born 1 August 1893 in Maysville, Kentucky, a resident of Vanceburg, Kentucky and a self-employed lawyer. He was single and claimed no dependants. He was described as being tall and of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. ["United States World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K35G-QNV : accessed 24 May 2014), Harvy Parker, 1917-1918; citing Lewis County, Kentucky, United States, NARA microfilm publication M1509, (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d); FHL microfilm 1653501.]

Two marriage records, same event:
1. Harvey Parker, Jr. married Grace Krouth on 28 December 1920 in St. Rose Of Lima Church, Mayslick [sic, Mays Lick. RLD], Mason Co, Kentucky. Harvey was the son of Abraham H. Parker and Lillie Halbert. Grace was the daughter of William Krouth and Elizabeth Lancour. General Notes: Wife - Nellie L. --?--

WHAT WAS NELLIE L. HOOD's MAIDEN NAME?

"... question relates to Roy Lee Hood and his wife, Nellie L. (?) Hood. My interest in Roy's family relates, in part, to Roy's wife's name and, in part, to his mother's name. I'm working on a church history for my home church, Lanett Church of God, Lanett, [Chambers County], Alabama, and the early membership roll for the period circa 1939-1943 includes the names, Susie Hood and Nellie Hood. I don't find another Susie or Nellie in Chambers County during this time period and, therefore, am inclined to presume they are the same people."... "Other than the names on the membership rolls, I don't have anything but the 1910 census, where Roy L. Hood is listed as a son of Suzie Hood (head of household); the 1920 census, in which Roy is living with his sister, Ethel Hunt; and, the 1930 census, showing Roy and wife, Nellie, and two children. I was hoping to learn that either Roy's mother was the Susie on the membership rolls or that Roy had a daughter named Suzie. I can't seem to find another Nellie or Susie in Chambers County."

The cemetery is very old with many unreadable cement and wood headstones. It has not been well kept. Sorry I could not fulfill your request. Tobi"

Jessie Carl DAVIS was the second son of William James DAVIS and Lorena McMILLAN. "He helped run the sawmill. William James DAVIS also had a stave mill in Washington County and commercial property in Milledgeville. He went into partnership with a Chicago individual names Qvarterneck who allegedly wrote a bunch of bad checks and ruined the business. William James lost almost everything he had build up before the depression hit. Jessie (We called him Uncle Jess) moved to Melbourne Fla in the late 20s or early 30s and continued his lumbering business there, probably because there was no business left in Ga. When my family visited him and his wife Nora in the mid 1950s to learn both were quite wealthy. He was a major owner in the Melbourne bank, owned thousands of acres of land and she owned a chain of sporting good stores. I will never forget Uncle Jess flipping me the keys to his Cadillac and letting me drive it around town. They had a son named Jessie who I spoke with in Melbourne about eight years ago. He did not remember much of anything about the Ga. years." )Jack Davis)

Tobias Richardson HARRIS married Mary Rebecca DANIEL on 18 February 1892. The Daniel Bible transcript names him as "Richard HARRIS." Their son Harry Sim HARRIS was born 1893. Mary died in 1895. Richardson was married to Onia in the 1900 census which says they have been married for 8 years. More likely, Richard married Onie after Mary's death in 1895 and the married eight years is from his first marriage to Mary.

[The Evening Star, Washington, District of Columbia, Monday, April 13, 1936, Page 16]

John Forrest Mahorney, born Apr. 7, 1936, passed away on Jan 3, 2016. His parents were John Richard Mahorney (1915-1986) and Katherine Elizabeth Thomson (1918-1997). Her mother was Katherine Blakeney Sullivan (1892-1973). [Michael Sullivan]

Obituary: John Forrest Mahorney, of Strasburg, VA, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Greenfield Reflection of Strasburg. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia (LuLu); son, Steven; brother Lawrence; and nephews, niece, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and John R. Mahorney; brother, Edward Mahorney; and sister, Ciss Masters.Upon retiring from the Arlington Co. Fire Department as a Station Commander in 1986, John realized his dream, and he and LuLu moved to the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, a place they had visited and loved for many years.John loved his family, his dogs, his friends, Bluegrass music, antique clocks, and steam engine trains. As a member of the National Railway Historical Society, he and Pat enjoyed many trips. He was a funny, outgoing man, and nothing brought him greater joy than to bring a smile to someone's face, particularly a child's. He was kind and generous and a tireless worker, proficient in everything he tackled, from building a cabin to rewiring a home to house painting like a pro. He never knew the meaning of the word "bored". Alzheimer's has no mercy on its victims. John did not choose to forget your name, to speak to you in garbled sentences, to act without discretion, or to become isolated while hoping to see or hear from an old friend... It was John's wish that there be no funeral nor memorial service and his ashes scattered in the spring in a place chosen by him... Stover Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Strasburg is serving the family of Mr. John F. Mahorney.[http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/nvdaily/obituary.aspx?pid=177159507#sthash.fp08kd7e.dpuf]

James C. Deneale I (b. abt. 1710-15 d. 1806) who lived in Fairfax Co. Va. Various accounts state that James (1) was a very old gentleman at his death, probably 90 plus years. James (1) will of 1805 indicates he owned a plantation with slaves in Fairfax Co. plus other parcels of land in Va. and Kentucky (part of Va. until 1780) in current Jefferson and Nelson counties, close to current Louisville Ky.
James I will states he had eight children. His first wife is unknown but they married in 1740 and his second wife's first name was Priscilla, his five son's were William, George, John/John Earl, Hugh and James II and three daughters named Katherine, Theodotia and Phileby. Additional unconfirmed children may have been Sybilla, Dassia, Mary, Jeannette and John that could be the children from his first wife but not mentioned in his 1805 will.
