"As an anecdote, I learned from my mother (Eda Claire Buschatzky Smith) that not only did my grandmother, born as Marie Louise May, not have a birth certificate (the first records of her shows up in the 1900 census at age 2 years), but she was not originally named Marie LOUISE May but was originally Marie ANTOINETTE May... According to my mother, her mother's middle name was changed from "Antoinette" to "Louise" when Marie May was 12 years old apparently because her mother took her to a fortune teller and was told that if she went through life with the name "Marie Antoinette" she would end up either a suicide or mass murderer." [Colin K. Smith, email, 26 February 2014]

"Marie Walker, died in 1979 in Birmingham, AL after having spent about 18 months in a nursing home (she went in around Christmas 1977.)" [Colin K. Smith, email, 22 April 2014]

Marie Walker, born 22 November 1897, died in October 1979 at age 82. Her last residence was in Jefferson County, Alabama 35223. Social Security Number 078-24-6330 was issued in New York. ["United States Social Security Death Index," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VMKC-G2X : accessed 22 Apr 2014), null, Oct 1979; citing U.S. Social Security Administration, Death Master File, database (Alexandria, Virginia: National Technical Information Service, ongoing).

Vincent Hardy Bell and "Marie Mary Bell Bushatzky Walker" [*] are named as parents in the September 9, 2010 obituary of Marie Bell Davis.
[* The reference to "Marie MARY Bell Bushatzky Walker" in the obit for Marie Bell Davis is wrong. My grandmother's full name was "MARIE Louise MAY (maiden name) Bell (1st husband) Buschatzky (2nd husband) Walker (3rd husband)." [Colin K. Smith, email, 25 February 2014]

General Notes: Husband - William Whitacre WILSON

Notes from David Leon Wilson:

"My earliest Wilson is a William Whitacre Wilson, born abt 1830 in Maryland. He moves to Washington, Wilkes County Georgia and marries Lucy Mayo there in 1854. He was the town crier and a printer. I think he came down with family, maybe a brother, but records are hard to find. Tuck"

William Whitacre WILSON was a printer by trade was born sometime around 1830, in Maryland, according to the 1860 &1870 census. (Family tradition is that he was from New Jersey.) He lived in Maryland, Wilkes County, Atlanta, Nashville, and probably back in Atlanta . He was an Oddfellow and a Mason. Family tradition was that President Wilson was a distant relative. I haven't found the connection as yet. Co incidences are that both Wilson families were printers Pres. Woodrow Wilson was raised in Georgia after his father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson was invited down to preside at a wedding of one of his wife's family members, a Woodrow. Irwin, son of William, names a child Woodrow Wilson, really prior to President Wilson achieving fame, ie, Edgar Woodrow Wilson is not named after the president. Perhaps more than one Woodrow married a Wilson and this is the connection. I have put a abbreviated Woodrow Wilson family tree in FTM.

I can't find a William Wilson that fits in Georgia in 1850 but he would only be 19 or 20 years old and could still be living in Maryland. There is only one William W. Wilson that fits (and he is "claimed") in the Maryland 1850 Census and that certainly doesn't make him "ours" but here it is:

Here is a theory as to why William came to Wilkes. There is a printer there named William H. Wilson who trains apprentice printers. William could be a relative who apprenticed with William H Wilson and then moved to Atlanta.

Notes from David Leon Wilson III:

She married William Whitacre Wilson August 23, 1854 (Source: Bible of David Mayo, in possession of Carol Poe in Macon, Ga..); born Abt. 1830 in Maryland (Source: Census of 1870.); died 1902 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Lucy's obituary appeared in the Nashville Banner, unknown date, is on file and is follows: Died in the city of Nashville, Tennessee on the fourteenth day of December, Anno Domini, of pneumonia, Mrs. Lucy Wilson, daughter of David and Julia Mayo, and wife of William Wilson. Mrs. Wilson was born in the State of Georgia and had but recently moved from Atlanta to Nashville. She was forty-seven years of age at the time of her death. The writer knew her long and well, and a more amiable, sweet-tempered person it would be difficult to find. Her lot was not one of sunshine always, but she nobly did her duty, and that was enough to say. To her husband, whether in misfortune of prosperity, she proved a patient, devoted wife; to her children, a loving and tender mother; to her relatives and friends, a kind, cheerful, and always pleasant companion and neighbor. May her slumbers be peaceful forevermore. It is a beautiful truth that, even as regards this life, the good and the true, the pure and the lovely, do not, cannot altogether die. When this dreaming is ended, and the life passes on into the dreamless sleep, something more than a name abides with us, and will abide for aye. For, when to us, also,
"The summons come to join
The innumerable caravan that moves
To that mysterious realm, where each shall take
His chamber in the silent halls of death"
and our names, and the names of those we once so tenderly loved shall be obliterated from the "sands of time" by the cold shadowy waves of oblivion, something of that life's beauty and goodness and loveliness shall forever be _____ of those who come after - even as a kind of indestructible fragrance, whose wavelets of sweetening are unceasingly widening, long after the flower from which it exhaled has dropped from it's parent stem - even as the fragrance blends with that of the budding flowerlet. To us, who so well knew, and so well loved her upon whose tomb we wish to place this simple offering of friendship; to us it has seemed so eminently proper that the above so beautiful truth , so beautifully illustrated by her, should be woven into the simple in memoriam garland we now drop upon the grave of her who, but a few weeks ago, obeyed the summons to " come higher". This is not the place to write anything like a biographical sketch of her to whose memory this is but a friendly offering. A simple record of facts could not be a record of Mrs. Lucy Wilson's life. There was something in her life, as there is in the life of every meek, modest, Christian Woman, that cannot be told in words - something intangible, indescribable, spirituelle; something that could be felt and never forgotten.
She did noble deeds, not dreamed them all day long;
And made life, death and that vast forever
One vast sweet song.
And it is thus that we think and shall ever think of her life - a life of duty yet a life that was as if inspired thought set to beautiful music. And of that music there will ever be echoes along the corridors of time - echoes that are in accord with the songs that are sung by the angels and by her around the Father's great white throne. "Fill not your hearts with pain and sorrow,
but remember me in every tomorrow.
Remember the joy, the laughter, the smiles,
I've only gone to rest a little while.
Although my leaving causes pain and grief,
my going has eased my hurt, and given me relief.
So dry your eyes and remember me not
as I am now but as I used to be. Because
I will remember you all and look on with
a smile. Understand in your hearts I've
only gone to rest a little while.
As long as I have my life in the heart of all of you."

Tribute: When death came Saturday to William Lawrence McCrary Jr., it dealt Augusta a grevous blow whose impact will be felt in every area of the community... Perhaps more than any other virtue, "Pete" McCrary possessed integrity in abundance that marked him a cut above his peers... With it all, Mr. McCrary was a widely known and successful businessman. for years he was the chief executive officer of the Phoenix Oil Company and, at his death was chairman of the board of directors. He was also a director of the First National Bank and Trust Co., and, until a few years ago, he was a member of our official family as a director of Southeastern Newpapers Corporation... Mr. McCrary was an avid sportsman. He was a member of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Augusta Country Club... he loved equally as much both hunting and fishing... He was a faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and a long-time member and former president of the Augusta Kiwanis Club. He was deeply devoted to his family and he was at all times a constant friend. Augusta will miss Pete McCrary - his smile, his warmth and his genuineness. "Israel Pickens Russell, born Feb. 8, 1825, and died Jun. 23, 1922." (Walt Russell, descendant, Parker, Florida)

Israel, known as "I. P.", sometimes called "Pick", married Martha "Mattie" Daniel McCULLOH of Walker County, Georgia on 18 August 1859 in Natural Bridge, Georgia.

In the 1860 census of Jackson County, Alabama, I. P. and Martha are named in the household of his father James RUSSELL in Stevenson, Alabama.

General Notes: Wife - Martha Daniel McCULLOH

Martha Daniel McCULLOH was called "Mattie". The 1850 Census for Lookout Valley, Walker County, Georgia, Roll 432-85, pg 473, is difficult to read, but Martha is named at 12 years of age in the family of her parents, Joseph Portlock McCULLOH and Elizabeth Raiford DANIEL.

The History of Walker County, Georgia, on page 453, states that a daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth McCULLOH is "Martha Cook" McCULLOH married "I. P. RUSSELL". (Note: This is one of two marriages given for her in that history including another on page 452 that she was Mattie McCULLOH who married Augustus Raymond McCUTCHEN, this marriage later found to be in error. In the 1860 census, Augustus McCutchen, without a wife, is listed in his father's home. He without a wife until after 1 June 1870 when"Martha E." age 33 and born in Alabama is listed with him in the 1880 census. RLD)

Martha "Mattie" married Israel Pickens RUSSELL on 18 August 1859 in Stevenson, Alabama. She and "Pick" lived in Stevenson for the rest of their lives, just across the Alabama-Georgia border about 30 miles from her childhood home in Walker County, Georgia. They had children in 1861,"Joanah", and 1863, "Betty Lula. Joanah, as named in the 1870 census, was likely named in memory of Mattie's deceased sister, Johanna. Betty Lula had died as a young child.

In a letter to Sarah Geraldine Jourdan MITCHELL from Sarah Geraldine "Gerald" McCULLOH, dated 21 Jun 1863, Geraldine writes concerning Mattie RUSSELL, her sister, that "Mattie came up and spent a week with us while Uncle Leavei was here. She is looking badly and is very lean. I suppose nursing reduces her so." (This letter is in the possession of David Leon "Tuck" Wilson III of Fort Myers, Florida.)

Martha and I. P. had eight children between 1861 and 1875: Joanah, Betty Lula, Martha, twins, James and Ellen, Emma, Blanche, Ann, and Israel P., Jr. Joanah had died before the 1900 census.

Martha survived her husband who died in 1922 at age 97. She passed away in 1925 at the age of 88. They are buried near Stevenson, Alabama in the RUSSELL Family Cemetery on the family farm originally settled, circa 1830, by Judge James RUSSELL, I. P.'s father. 656

Notes: Marriage

Israel Pickens RUSSELL, III & Ernestine MANN, of Stevenson, Alabama, Martha's grandson and his wife, in a telephone conversation on the evening of 17 July 2004, said that Israel Pickens RUSSELL and Martha "Mattie" McCULLOH were married on 15 August 1859. Ernestine said that Martha "Mattie" McCULLOH met Israel Pickens RUSSELL, Sr. at a house party in Stevenson, Alabama while visiting the LARKIN family.
Frances Phillips CROWNOVER, great-grand-daughter of Martha Daniel McCulloh RUSSELL wrote that "Martha Daniel McCulloh married Israel Pickens Russell August 18, 1859, at Natural Bridge, GA. She was only married one time. We do not have any conflicting information from a Walker Co., GA History." (Email dated 17 July 2004.)
The book "History of Walker County, Georgia", on page 453, under a section entitled "McCULLOH"states "Martha Cook married "I. P. RUSSELL". Another reference under "McCUTCHEN" on page 452, "(4) Augustus Raymond (1836-1879), married Mattie McCULLOH".
NOTE: Further research proves that Martha "Mattie" McCULLOH, daughter of Joseph Portlock McCULLOH and Elizabeth Raiford DANIEL, did not marry Augustus Raymond McCUTCHEN. Curiously, in the 1870 census of Walker County, Georgia, Augustus is list with a wife shown as "Martha E."

General Notes: Husband - Capt. Augustus Raymond McCUTCHEN, CSA

The History of Walker County, Georgia, page 452, presents that Augustus Raymond McCUTCHEN married Mattie McCULLOH, sister of Juliet and Sarah G. McCULLOH, daughters of Joseph Portlock McCULLOH and Elizabeth Raiford DANIEL. This cannot be correct. Martha "Mattie" McCULLOH married Israel Pickens RUSSELL on 15 August 1859 and remained Israel's wife until his death in 1922 in Jackson County, Alabama. This marriage is listed on page 453 of the same book. Augustus, without a wife, is named in his father's household in the 1860 census, nor does he have a wife in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census, Augustus has a wife "Martha E." age 33, born about 1847. They married 25 October 1870 in Lee County, Alabama. She cannot be the Martha "Mattie" McCULLOH ascribed to him in the History of Walker County.

During the War Between the States, Augustus Raymond "Gus" McCUTCHEN served the Southern Cause in Company F, 4th Georgia Cavalry, Wheeler's Brigade, in which his brother, Cicero D. McCUTCHEN was 1st Lieutenant. Gus rose to the rank of Captain before the war was over.

A story about him during the war after the Battle of Resaca in 1864, near Calhoun, Georgia, in which his unit fought, says he and several others received furloughs to visit family in Walker County, some 30 miles away. They separated and went their homes. Gus "was welcomed by his father and mother and sister Senecca (sic)". That night, some were set upon by Unionists. One who escaped, John MATHIS told the ATWOOD girls, "One of you got to your brother's and tell his wife to go and tell Mrs. CHASTAIN that I have gotten away from the tories, and for her to go tell my mother, and have Sallie go and tell Mrs. McCUTCHEN." As a result, Gus McCUTCHEN, Ben CHASTAIN and John MATHIS were reunited and returned to their unit. (A story contributed by Nina OXFORD, Mrs. G. L. CHASTAIN, to the History of Walker County. - page 227) It appears the "Mrs. McCUTCHEN" in the story was Jane Bell McCUTCHEN, the wife of Gus' father, Benjamin.

"Augustus McCUTCHEN. In an old copy of the Walker County Messenger Mr.. J. B. HACKNEY relates the following story: A body of Confederates had been taken completely by surprise and before they could escape they were entirely surrounded by a number of Federal soldiers - in fact they were all around and among them. Some days before this the Confederates had captured some supplies among which were a number of Yankee uniforms. The Confederates being in dire need of warm clothing appropriated these uniforms and many of the soldiers wore them. Among this band of Confederates thus surrounded by the Yankees was that brilliant and unique character of North Georgia, Augustus McCUTCHEN. He took in the situation at once and rising to his full height and assuming a commanding air, began in a stern voice to give orders to the Federal soldiers about him. As they were all in disorder and everything in confusion, and Mr. McCUTCHEN wore a blue uniform they took him for a Federal officer and without question hurried away as he directed. Due to his presence of mind and tactfulness, he and his companions easily made their escape, hurrying away to safety." (History of Walker County, Georgia, page 256)

"A GEOLOGIST. Mr. Augustus R. McCUTCHEON, one of the early settlers of Walker County, was for a number of years connected with various departments of the State, being in 1883 Editing Clerk of the Agricultural Department, in which position he contributed some very fine articles on the geology of the state, which were published in 'The Common-Wealth of Georgia'. After the Civil War he served as assistant geologist for a number of years, in which position he was tireless in his efforts to examine and make records of the geology of Northwest Georgia. It is to be remarked that later geologists have found little to add to or take from his researches. Patient and painstaking, he was eminently qualified for the work and was the first to examine and make record of the geological formations of Walker County." Augustus died "early in 1888" as mentioned in the Annual report of the Board of Regents of the Smithsonian Institution, showing the operations, expenditures, and condition of the Institution of July, 1888, Date: 1889-01-01; Serial Set Vol. No. 2668, Session Vol. No.14; H.Misc.Doc. 142 pt. 1, page 221.

Within an article titled "Georgia and Her Papers" published Wednesday, August 15, 1888 on page 4 of the Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia:
"A reprorter of the Tribune had a talk a few days ago with Senator Linton A. Dean. Senator Dean said: "Talking about the probable discovery of petroleum in Floyd county calls to my mind the opinion of an eminent man on minerologial subjects.I refer to the late Col. A. R. McCutchen, state geologist, who died last year.

General Notes: Wife - Martha Elizabeth McCULLOH

Martha E. McCulloh married Augustus R. McCutchen.

Martha Elizabeth Mccutchen born 22 February 1848 in Chambers County, Alabama, died 29 December 1932 in Salem, Lee County, Alabama at age 84 years 10 months 5 days. She was a widowed daughter of Bryant Mcculloh and Ann Stephens, both born in Chambers County. Martha resided on Route 2, Salem, Alabama. She was buried 31 December 1932 in Mt. Zion Cemetery. ["Alabama, Deaths, 1908-1974," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDP7-QLF : accessed 18 Jan 2013), Martha Elizabeth Mccutchen, 29 Dec 1932; citing reference cn 25797, Department of Health, Montgomery; FHL microfilm 1908505.]

There is a one day discrepancy in the record date of Martha's death and the date on her headstone. Martha is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Smiths Station, Lee County, Alabama. A picture of her headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 44152180:

MARTHA E. McCULLOH

AUGUSTUS R. McCUTCHEN

The memorial lists her birth in Alabama and her death in Lee County, Alabama. It also has links to three of her children: Margaret F. McCutchen (1871 - 1953); Benjamin Walter McCutchen (1873 - 1945); and Augusta R. McCutchen (1875 - 1961).

General Notes: Wife - Sarah Geraldine McCULLOH

This letter from Sarah Geraldine McCulloh was transcribed and provided by Tuck Wilson:
Home June 21st 1863
My Dear Cousin
When I left your house I thought I would return there before I left for home and spend several weeks with you. I told Mr. Worrill when we parted at Eufaula that he might tell you so for I did not feel as if I had made any visit at all. When I got to Uncle Lawrence Daniells, I received a letter from Home saying Ma's(?) health was much worse and for Uncle Leave and myself to come up as soon as we could. So we came on home immediately. My visit to Glennville seams more like a unpleasant dream than a long anticipated pleasure for I was so uneasy about Ma all the time that I could not enjoy myself. She is much better now but is still far from well. Some days she seems quite well and probably the next she will be sick again. The rest of us are all tolerably well though we have been suffering from colds. There is a good deal of sickness in the valley produced by the continued bad weather. I have been at home three weeks and I don't think we have missed having rain two days in succession. Dr. Parks has been quite sick but is improving. Was able to sit up yesterday. Sis Julia and family are very well. Mattie came up and spent a week with us while Uncle Leavei was here. She is looking badly and is very lean. I suppose nursing reduces her so. Her baby is very sweet and good and tolerably pretty. All the family inquired particularly about "you and yours". I told ever so many times about your two sweet little boys, your old man, and yourself. For fear I have not done you justice, you had better come up here and bring them. we would all love so much to see you in this country once again. Mr Worrill spoke of bringing you up ____ here, I wish he would do it. We received a little letter from Sis _____ (Hattie?, Lillian?) last week. She was very well and said she would be up in a few weeks and wants me to return home with her. We have not heard from ____ ( the other sister?) lately. The yankees made a raid in east Tennessee last week and tore up the railroad and cut off communications between here and there. I suppose it will soon be remedied . This is twice that the yankees have been between here and where she is. We know she is safe however and never feel uneasy. The wheat crop up in this country is very fine. The farmers have all planted a great deal of wheat and are now reaping an abundant harvest. Corn looks very promising and I think with the present prospects there is no danger of us being starved out. You must give my kindest regards to Mr, Worrill. Remember me to the girls and accept my best love and a kiss for yourself and children. I hope you will answer my letter soon. It has been some time since I have heard from you and I would like to know how you all are. The family joins me in love to you.
Affectionately your cousin,
Gerald McCulloh

With all of the other names in your lineage making connections to some of our families, I'm beginning to wonder if our Julia MC DANIELS belongs somewhere. We don't really know for sure that she was a MC DANILES/MC DANAL/DANAL (seen in cemeteries of AL, various spellings), but there was a Nancy MC DANIELS living in the household with Julia, 1850 census, Sumter Co, AL.
