Bridget was the second wife of Timothy HERLIHY, great-great-grandfather of this compiler. The OLIPHANT family is related to the NICHOLSON, THREEWITZ and (O')DANIEL family in South Carolina in the late 1700s and early 1800s. It would be interesting if S. R. OLIPHANT was related to these families because Carmen SWANSON, great-granddaughter of Timothy HERLIHY and his first wife, Catherine FITZGERALD, married into the (O')DANIEL family (James Ulmer DANIEL) in 1936 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Your compiler is Carmen's eldest son Robert Louis Daniell)

William Daniel MARSH died about 1873 in Enterprise, Clarke County, Mississippi.

General Notes: Wife - Edna MASSEY

Edna "Edney" MASSEY married John POPE. The marriage record at FamilySearch.org lists her maiden name as "MARCY" which may be a misread of the handwritten Massy or Massey. In 1850, Daniel POPE, age 7, is in her household. In 1860 he is Daniel MASSEY, age 18, and believed to be Edna's brother, not one of her and John's children. Daniel was born before Edna married John POPE.

She is buried as "Edney" in Harmony Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Brooks County, Georgia. A picture of her headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 45850663 created by Robert Strickland on Dec 27, 2009:

Esteemed Cousin
It has become my painful duty to inform you of the Death of my beloved Sister Caroline.
Her voice is forever hushed and her eyes, closed in Death. Though she has departed from our sight, she shall never, no never be forgot, she has bid
Farewell to pain and sorrow
Farewell to sin and strife
In happiness and glory
She will spend and (sic) endless life.
Sister Caroline was taken sick the day the day you left here and died the 15th. Oh, that parting hour who can imagine the agony but we that ___ (ope?) our lovely and amiable Sisters
extended on their _____ beds see their eyes robed (sic) of it's luster and Death in all his terror _____ over there (sic) mortal remains. when her cheek on which had lately sat the bloom and fascination of youth, was steadily fixed apparently on the beauteous spheres of fair and more
delight full worlds whether her calm and gentle spirit seemed mediating its flight. She spoke a language worthy of her which the frozen toning of ink never learned to speak or mimic. 2 days before her death she got happy, there were some religious persons in the room she asked them to sing and pray for her but the Doctors would not allow them. She then shouted Hallalujah to the Lamb and sung
Come ye sinners, poor and needy.
She then prayed the most affecting prayer I ever heard in all my life, she said she wished to talk to us all and she did so, she talked very calm and deliberately she said she was going to die and leave us all, if it was God's wish that she should live she would be willing, as it was not she was willing said she did not know as she should ever be better prepared than she was. She asked for 3 glasses of water repeatedly this they refused she said she did not want the water so bad she only wanted it for the sake of the Father Son and Holy Ghost the Doctors even refused her this, she then said she would soon in Abraham's bosom where she should drink the fairest and best water
She then asked us all for 3 _____ apiece and told us she would die at 10 o'clock and sure enough the lovely and amiable Carolines voice was forever hushed her last words were be-lie-ve. She requested to me to write to all her friends and tell them she was gone to heaven and they must prepare to meet her there.
Cousin Emera It is very sickly in Jones County at this time Uncle Julius has had a very sever (sic) attack of the Billious fever we thought he would die but he is up and about but his little son is very sick. Uncle Cad has two children likely to die Harriotte and Augustus, Cousin Mary Mitchell is very sick. Cousin Mary Moughon is very sick and has lost a son. Mother keeps in good health but my health and Papa's has been very bad. Excuse bad writing and write soon. You must call by as you go on to Alabama. Present my love and complements to Mr. Thrasher and except (sic) the greatest share for yourself.
Ellen E. Mitchell
Mrs Emera A. E. Thrasher

Addendum DLW:
"Uncle Julius" - Julius C. B. Mitchell, the youngest of the clan, married to Catherine Daniell Mitchell. They only had one son of record, Americus Columbus Mitchell, b. 18 Nov 1819.
"Uncle Cad" - Augustus Cadwell Mitchell, also seen as Augustus George Cadwell Mitchell, known as Cadwell, one of the older Mitchell children. He married Elizabeth W. Hill (1797-1852). This letter is the first reference to his child, Augustus, whose full name may be Augustus John.
Cousin Mary Mitchell
Mary Mitchell, dau of William Mitchell & Martha Hill b. after 1808 marries JJ Slatter 1827 in Jones county - likely
Cousin Mary Moughon - Mary Sanford b. abt 1792, d. bef 1850, father was Jesse Sanford, mother was Martha Goodwin Mitchell. She married Thomas Moughon, b. 1787 in N. C. , died 1851 Jones County Georgia. Thomas and Mary were in Baldwin county in 1820, Jones in 1830 and 1850 (1840 not found.). Mary dies before 1850.
"Mother" - Elizabeth Wood, (1788 - aft.1850)
"Papa" - John Mitchell ( abt 1785 - 1841)
Ellen A. E. Mitchell - the author, Ellen Emeline Mitchell, b. abt 1812, d. 1837. She writes an amazing letter for someone about 14 years of age. She goes on to marry a William Moughon in Jones County 6 Feb 1828 and William dies in Jones County in 1830. I don't have the relationship of William to Thomas Moughon who marries Mary Sanford but there should be one.

General Notes: Husband - John D. MAY

Fairfax Harrison, author and genealogist, wrote in "Tyler's Quarterly" that Frances O'DANIEL, daughter of John O' DANIEL and Elizabeth MOXLEY of Fairfax County, Virginia, "moved to South Carolina with her uncle and married there a man named MAY." John D. MAY, who married "Ann Frances" in Fairfield District, South Carolina is believed to have been her husband. Although previously found records name her only as Frances, no doubt after her grandmother Frances O'DANIEL, Frances' father had a sister Ann O'Daniel. His having named a daughter "Ann Frances" is plausible.

This church record is for for John and Fanny MAY.
Little River Baptist Church, Fairfield County, South Carolina, 1794-1820 Minutes & Membership Rolls, prepared by Lee Ann Gerhart, lists John MAY as a member and was made a deacon 24 June 1803. On pages 71 and 72, after a page dated 2 September 1820, John May and Fanny MAY are named as members. (http://www.rootsweb.com/~scfairfi/lrbc.htm)

From "Two MAY Families of Hollow Square, Greene County, Alabama", compiled by Berenice May FULLER, 115 Al-Jo Curve, Selma, Alabama, 36701:

John D. MAY was a Baptist Minister, and served in the Revolutionary War, & was probably the John MAY who served as a Pvt. in the 6th SC Regiment. He is mentioned in a chart named "Statistics of Little River of Broad Church" as a messenger to the association in 1803-03. He is in the 1800-10 census of Fairfield Co., SC. He moved to Greene Co., AL in c1818 with his children. His daughter by his 1st marriage was:

John & Anne Frances MAY's children were:
James F. MAY, b. c1788 in SC
John MAY, Jr., b. 1790-1800 in SC, d. 1849. He was living in LA in 1844.

1. The John MAYE in Fairfield District:
1790 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Fairfield District; Series: M637 Roll: 11 Page: 510:
John MAYS 1 2 4 . .
Reads: 1 male 16 or over [John], 2 males under 16 [James and John, Jr.?], 4 females [Anne Frances, her step-daughter Rebecca and two unknown]. These possible names appear to agree with John's family as portrayed in "Two MAY Families of Hollow Square, Greene County, Alabama" above, but with 2 additional females. Similar to the John May household in Richfield District. Considering that John and Anne Frances MAY named a son Thomas Taylor MAY, born in 1800, and a Tom TAYLOR is listed as a neighbor in 1790, it is more likely that the Fairfield district household is the family of Anne Frances "Fanny" May. Erie is situated on a beautiful and elevated bluff on the east bank of the Black Warrior River, about twenty-five miles below the Falls, and about twenty above its junction with the Tombeckbe [sic], combining at once as many advantages as any site in the Territory. The country for twenty or thirty miles around, is populous, healthy and fertile; being surpassed by none in the Southern Country.
The Town is supplied by several springs of never failing water and there is in the neighborhood, fine streams for Mill-seats and other water machinery. The mail road from Georgia by Cahaba [sic] to Natchez, together with the road from Nashvillle to St. Stephens passing through this place cannot fail to make it one of the most important situations for trade in this part of the country. Mechanics of every description are invited to attend and if they should improve, the most liberal encouragement will be given.
The undersigned Commissioners will make contracts for the building of several houses in the place, for which the best prices will be given.
A plan of the Town may be seen at the Land office at Huntsville, at St. Stepnens, & at Lewin's Hotel, Tuskaloosa.

Fairfax Harrison wrote in Tyler's Quarterly, "Frances moved to South Carolina with her uncle and married there a man named MAY."

Frances' uncles, James and William O'DANIEL, had land grants in Craven County, Province of South Carolina, James' dating back to 1754. This area is now Richland, Fairfield and Kershaw counties. Frances' brother William migrated in 1768 to join their uncles, James and William, in Craven County. She may have accompanied William when he left Virginia for South Carolina. William married Lucretia BELL.

In his will of 1798, John O'DANIEL left to his daughter, Frances MAY, 200 acres of land in Fayette County, Kentucky. This land is now in Lewis County, Kentucky, part of a greater tract of 2701 acres, located along the Licking River in Fayette County, Kentucky, was surveyed for and granted by the Commonwealth of Virginia to John O'DANIEL on October 20, 1785. The original survey reads in part "...being in the County of Fayette on the Waters of Licking about four or five miles South of the head of Salt Lick Creek Beginning at Daniel BOONE's Camp made in the year 1776..." The Marker for this survey was Isaac BOONE.

Little River Baptist Church, Fairfield County, South Carolina, 1794-1820 Minutes & Membership Rolls, prepared by Lee Ann Gerhart, lists John MAY as a member and made a deacon 24 June 1803.
