General Notes: Husband -

Henry Gunnell HURST is named as "Harry", a son of James HURST in the 1849 settlement of the estate of his Uncle William HURST.

"One particular son of James Hurst & Mary Gunnell is of interest to me as he lived here in Jeffersonville. That is Major Henry Hurst, the aid-de-camp to William Henry Harrison, born about 1769, and who died here 1-Jan-1855; he was buried in the old long-gone City Cemetery; supposedly everyone there was re-buried at Walnut Ridge, but the online lists for that cemetery don't include him.
He studied law in the offices of Benjamin Sebastian in Louisville Kentucky, and married Betsy Sebastian, thought to be Ben's daughter, on 2-Apr-1796 in Louisville. They had a son Benjamin who served in the Indiana State legislature, and who died 31-Dec-1837 in Logansport IN.
They are also thought to have had a son Harry in 1798 who died young, possibly in Knox Co. Indiana, where Henry seems to have been a kick-a** frontier lawyer. He also practiced in Corydon, Harrison Co., IN, home of my Hursts from 1807 to the present.
Problem comes in with wife #2, named Nancy. Seems she was a Stanhope and was said to have been Henry's childhood sweetheart in some research that fails to make any mention of Besty Sebastian. Ok, but my mom married her childhood sweetheart as husband #2, so I can buy that he went back to Fairfax to marry her. Just don't undertstand omitting wife #1.
Henry had a son William Henry Hurst 1-Aug-1805 so either Henry married Nancy before that date or William Henry is also Betsy's son.
A Mrs Nancy Hurst is buried in Walnut Ridge who died 22-Dec-1816, very early. Did Henry marry 3 times, to 2 Nancys? There seems to be some data that Nancy was Nancy D. Warfield who had previously been married to Samuel Theobald in 1816 in Fayette Co.
Henry also had a daughter Mary Ann Hurst b. about 1808. Mary married to William L. Leviston, in Jeffersonville, IN, on 8-Oct-1832. He was the Jeffersonville Postmaster. His middle initial L may actually be S and may be for Stanhope.
I have Mary Ann's will, and she is clearly Henry's daughter, there is no dispute of that. But I've had a lot of trouble piecing this all together. Henry's son William named a daughter after her, Mary Leviston Hurst, 20-Feb-1848. William also seems to have had two sons named Henry, both of whom died young and are buried at Walbut Ridge. I have 12-Apr-1857 as William's date of death, assuming that was in Mississippi. Wife Anna Isabella Bodley died 1853 loc unknown to me.
Henry's son William, his line forward seems fairly well documented, as two of his descendents joined the DAR and provided data (Sue Palham Trigg and Mary Hurst Trigg).
I've accumulated a lot of peripheral data on Henry over the years. There was a Robert K. Moore who was a friend of the family, some land transactions for him took place in Knox Co. In and back in Fairfax VA." (Douglas Quebbeman, now Daiyu Hurst, daiyu.hurst@gmail.com, 10/28/2006)

General Notes: Husband -

John HURST received a Northern Neck Land Grant, (v. 200) for 312 acres on the head branches of Accotink Run in 1719. It was bounded by lands of Thomas NORMAN, Robert CARTER, Esq., and Capt. Edward MOUNTJOY. John died there in 1747.
According to Tyler's Quarterly, he was "undoubtedly" part of the HURST family from Wicomico Parish in Northumberland (Bishop Meade, ii, 132), and was a voter at theFairfax election of 1744, but this voter may have been his son, John Jr of Accotink. It appears that he was the father of Thomas and James HURST whose families are documented in the Overwharton Parish Register.
From: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/users/berkeley/public/Cbiodir.html
In NOTES ON OFTEN-CITED PERSONS, PLACES, AND THINGS IN ROBERT CARTER'S DIARY AND LETTERS by Edmund Berkeley, Jr. which contains brief notes with sources identifying persons with whom Robert CARTER frequently corresponds, or that he mentions often in his diary and letters, Berkeley makes this entry: HUST (or HURST), JOHN, (d. 1747) was the overseer of "Hamstead Quarter," Stafford County, in the 1732 inventory of Robert CARTER's estate, supervising sixteen slaves with the assistance of one horse. HUST apparently was a carpenter because CARTER mentions his doing carpentry work in various letters. General Notes: Husband -

Fairfax Harrison, writing in Tyler's Quarterly Magazine, states that John HURST, d. 1789, is first found mentioned in a lease of land from Daniel McCARTY in 1747. The lease named his wife, Elizabeth, and son, James.

Loudoun County [Virginia] Tithables 1775-1781, page 50, lists in Cameron Parish, 1778 "John Hunt HURST's TithsL Wm. BENNETT Overseer: Negroes Bob, Harry, Ben, Winney, Judy, Lucy, Tolber, & Will -9"

In his will of March 10, 1787, proved December 21, 1789 (Fairfax Liber E1, fo 349), he bequeaths tracts of land in Fairfax and in Loudoun Counties and a warrant for 1000 acres "to be hereafter laid in some of the back countries". He named his second wife, Sibyl, thought to be Sibyl MOXLEY, called Silbyl BURK in William MOXLEY's will, sons James and William, and daughters Jane WILLIAMS, Susanna FENLEY (FINDLEY?), Elizabeth THRIFT, Sarah DULIN, Bathseba FALLIN, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth WHITE, wife of James MARSHALL. Another daughter, Ann FLOYD, was named in the settlement of the will.
Will Book P, 1791-1794, Fairfax County, Virginia. John HURST -16 March 1787-21 December 1789. Wife: Sybil. Sons: James, William. Daughters: Jane WILLIAMS, Susan FINLEY, Elizabeth THIRFT, Sarah DULIN, Bathesheba. Granddaughters: Elizabeth MARSHALL. Exrs: wife, son James, Jeremiah WILLIAMS. Witness: Aaron ALBY, Mary SEWELL. (http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/HOLBERT/2000-06/0961445774)
At this point in researching this family, the mother of each of his children is not known. They are all listed under John's first wife, Elizabeth, SAID TO HAVE DIED CIRCA 1745.

Information on the descendants of John HURST is derived from Tyler's Quarterly Magazine and correlated with tombstone inscriptions and burial lot printouts from Jefferson County, Virginia (West Virginia).

His middle initial L may actually be S, may be for Stanhope. I have Mary Ann's will, and she is clearly Henry's daughter, there is no disputs of that. But I've had a lot of trouble piecing this all together. Henry's son William named a daughter after her, Mary Leviston HURST, 20 February 1848." There are two daughters of James HURST who are named in this settlement with last name of STANHOPE. The second is Nancy STANHOPE. "Mildred" and Amelia are thought to be the same person because "Nancy" is a nickname for Ann.

Peter is named in the settlement of his Uncle William HURST's estate as "Peter HURST - or if dead (6.34)". It appears that Peter was one of those who "moved west" and did not stay in contact with the family or died.
Peter HURST moved to Kentucky and married Ann "Nancy" RUST in 1801. They had 15 children. Peter died 9 February 1846 and is buried in Woodford County, Kentucky.

Children

General Notes: Husband -

"Emily Epps (SANFORD) JORDAN was the wife of Benj. Smith JORDAN of Milledgeville who died ca. 1856. Leonidas JORDAN was their son. His mother lived with Leonidas until her death and never remarried. They lived in Lee County, Georgia (Palmeria) and had a home in Macon, but as I recall, they always participated in the census from Lee County, close to Columbus. If you recall, Benj. Smith JORDAN was the cousin that Warren JOURDAN felt was responsible for his bankruptcy.
The exact relationship is this: Benj. Smith JORDAN is the grandson of George JOURDAN and his second wife, Hannah SMITH, through Hezekiah JOURDAN, who died ca 1812, will in Morgan Co Ga., and Greenville Co. Va. Warren JOURDAN is the grandson of the same George JOURDAN, by his first wife, Patience WARREN, through their son, Benj. JOURDAN, who was killed by Indians ca. 1786 in Jackson CO. Ga." (Tuck Wilson)
Benjamin and Emily had one child: Col. Leonidas JORDAN, whose first wife was the great love of his life and was a great beauty beloved by all who knew her. You list her as Julia COLQUITT, which may be so, although I, again, do not have my notes here in Cambridge to corroborate that fact ... although, that does sound feasible. His first wife died relatively young, I think, and they had no children -- of, if they did have children, they died without record excepting the possibility of her dying during childbirth, to the best of current knowledge. They certainly had no child live beyond infancy, and I have never heard of any child (excepting the possible childbirth one mentioned above). Leonidas (Lee) lived as a wealthy elder gentleman until late in life when he married for a second time, Ilah DUNLAP of Maconga (Macon, Georgia) a young lady who is said by some wags to have been 18 when he married her (he being in his 70s or 80s at the time), but I have heard more authoritatively that she was at least 20 when they wed. Whatever, she was the ultimate gold-digger and within only a few years Lee passed away leaving her a very rich young widow, indeed. VERY RICH. Lee is said to be one of only two southerners post-war who could write a check for a million dollars and have it honored. Ilah turned over Lee's house to her brother as his home and set him up very well, then gave one of Lee's plantations to another sister, while keeping his Albany plantation for her own hunting preserve, then took off for Atlanta where she married a rich attorney and laid siege to Atlanta society. At her death, in Germany, I believe, while at the baths there, what was not stolen by a young cousin (later tried for the murder of his wife, even later blown up and burned to death in an assassination at his Palm Beach house -- Lee's money again), went to the University of Georgia and funded the current library there (her specific bequest, even to the design and style). (Tuck Wilson)

A short obituary was published in the Union Recorder, Jan. 24, 1899, page 6.

General Notes: Wife -

The obituary of Julia Flournoy HURT was published in the Union Recorder, Milledgeville, Georgia, Jan. 5, 1892, page 6:
"Death of Mrs. Lee Jordan
Mrs. Lee JORDAN died very suddenly at 8 o'clock Wednesday night at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Fannie HURT, in Wynnton, a suburb of Columbus. She was out at church on Sunday and apparently well on Monday. She had an attack of grip, with symptoms of pneumonia, and though confined to her room, she was not considered dangerously ill. A few seconds previous to her death she was conversing rationally with her physician, Dr. HURT, who had been called, then turned over on her side and in a moment was dead.
Her sudden death was a terrible shock to those in the room and for some minutes it could scarcely be realized.
Mrs. JORDAN was a remarkable woman and was universally popular, being a great favorite in society. She married in 1861 Colonel Peyton COLQUITT, a brother of Senator COLQUITT, who was killed in the battle of Chickamauga. Colonel COLQUITT was at one time editor of The Columbus Enquirer. In 1868 she married Colonel Lee JORDAN, a wealthy planter, who survives her and is prostrated by the suddenness of the terrible blow. She was born near Wynnton, in 1846. She was the only daughter of Mrs. Fanny HURT and Joel Early HURT, a prominent citizen of Columbus.
Mrs. JORDAN's social career has been very brilliant. She was a great beauty and had throngs of admirers wherever she went. Just after the war, and in her widowhood, she visited Paris, and was a great favorite at the French court.
Many friends in this city sympathize with Mr. JORDAN in his sad loss."

General Notes: Wife -

Mary Jane YOUNG was a daughter of Lovick YOUNG and Jane D. DANIEL. She is believed to be the the female, under 10, in the 1820 census, and the female 15-20 in the 1830 census.

She is named as Mary Jane INGRAM, mother of Sarah A. INGRAM, in her mother's 1849 Will: "It is my will and desire, That if any of the Legatees before named should die without leaving a lawful heir, that the property hereinbefore given them, and not absolutely devised & bequeathed, with the increase, be eaqually divided among the survivors, & in case of the death of more than one, the child or children of a deceased child to take, per stirpes, the share to which their parents would be entitled, if alive. This clause refers alone to those of my children named above, and not to my grand daughter Sarah A. INGRAM. Although I believe it to be my duty to give most of my property to those of my children who have been with me during my widowhood, and fromwhon I hope & expect to receive consolation, support & protection in the evening of my life & in my declining years - I am bound by the ties of a Mother's love to give my daughter Mary Jane INGRUM the property hereinbefore bequeathed to her, as a token of a Mother's affection. To my grandaughter Sarah Ann INGRUM I have bequeathed no part of my estate not on account of a want of regard and affection but because the property which she & her Mother have received from her Grand Father's Estate more than equals in value, the portions of my other children."

Mary Jane's husband was not named.

POSSIBLE? Polly = Mary, b. abt 1812. The NC is questionable. Record indexed as Cordner INGRAM. Lancaster borders Chester and York to the east and is west of Chesterfield counties.

Subdivided into two Brigades which included the following Counties. 1st Brigade Commanded by Brigadier General Thomas GLASCOCK Richmond, Columbia, Warren. 2nd Brigade Commanded by Brigadier General John IRWIN Washington, Hancock.
From The History of Baldwin County, Georgia, by Mrs. Anna Maria Green Cook, published in 1925, by Keys-Hearn Printing Co., p. 468:
"James Willis Cantey, still a youth, was placed by his father in the store of Colonel Morgan Brown, of Sandersville, Ga., remaining there until the declaration of war in 1812, when he joined a corps of volunteer Cavalry under Captain John Irwin, son of Gov. Irwin. His father objected to his joining the Army, unless he could get an appointment on the northern frontier, then the scene of active operation. Failing in this he went with his company of volunteers into the Creek War, and was mustered in the service at Fort Hawkins, Ga., 1813. Capt. Irwin's company was engaged in the battle of Ottosee and Talassee."

General Notes: Husband -

Henry Isbell is in the Lunenburg tax lists until 1764,
although Halifax was formed in 1752. In 1748 he has one tithe, listed in
the district defined as "from the fork to Cubb creek" which was in what
would become Charlotte County. In 1749 he has one tithe, in the district
defined as "from Falling River to Little Ronoke River", still in what
would become Charlotte. He could certainly have been close to the
boundary of Charlotte and Halifax in those lists. In 1764 a Henry
Isbell has 4 tithes and 500 acres, named in one of the lists for St.
James Parish (it had been formed in 1761 and would become Mecklenburg
County). [Tax info from Sunlight on the Southside.] (Pam Miller, email, 6.17.2005)
