J L Yearta died 17 September 1996 in Georgia at age 61. Georgia. Certificate Number 901036. ["Georgia Death Index, 1933-1998,"]

Obituary: A 32-year Army veteran, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Jesse L. Yearta was a highly decorated soldier and a prisoner of war who escaped from his Communist captors in Vietnam after three years in a bamboo cage.
Mr. Yearta, 61, of Hogansville, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Alabama.
While held by the Viet Cong, Mr. Yearta and his comrades were able to concoct an explosive powder that helped free them.
"Jesse and three other prisoners made their escape, running and swimming as far and fast as they could," said his wife, Gloria Yearta. "But the Viet Cong pursued relentlessly with bloodhounds and two of them did not make it."
During the Vietnam War, Mr. Yearta fought in the Battle of An Loc near Saigon. "Jesse and his comrades were surrounded by the North Vietnamese artillery and infantry for nearly 90 days," his wife said.
During his career, he served in the infantry, an armored battalion, an intelligence group, an airborne and a Ranger company. He was trained at Fort Benning and fought in the Korean War.
His awards included the Distinguished Service Cross, eight Purple Hearts, Silver Star, Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He retired in 1983 while stationed at Fort Hood, Texas.
After retiring, he taught college courses in criminal justice. He moved to Hogansville five years ago.
Mr. Yearta entertained children at Scottish Rite and Egleston children's hospitals as a member of the Red Devil Clown Unit of Yaarab Shrine Temple in Atlanta.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at the chapel of Claude A. McKibben & Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Burial will be with full military honors at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Meriwether County.
Other survivors include three daughters, Kathy Brawner of LaGrange, Karen Newton and Penny Willingham, both of Hogansville; a son, Kenny Yearta of LaGrange; a stepdaughter, Melissa Greene of Dahlonega; two sisters, Ruth Jones of Greenville, S.C., and Betty Jo Cape of Simpsonville, S.C.; a brother, Douglas Yearta of Hogansville; and eight grandchildren.

Distinguished Service Cross
Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant First Class Jesse L. Yearta, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant First Class Jessie L. Yearta distinguished himself while serving as an advisor to the 81st Ranger Group, Army of the Republic of Vietnam during the period 20 April 1972 to 20 May 1972. The 81st Ranger Group was given the mission of retaking a northern sector of the besieged provincial capital of An Loc, held by enemy forces. Sergeant Yearta constantly exposed himself to the enemy fire and directed airstrikes and other supporting fires as the battalion quickly regained control of a portion of the area. During this period, he infiltrated into enemy held areas of the city and directed highly successful airstrikes on the enemy positions around him and was repeatedly subjected to indirect and small arms fire. On three other occasions, as the enemy attempted regimental-size attacks supported by tanks and artillery in an attempt to overrun the friendly positions, Sergeant Yearta again exposed himself, at great personal risk, from rooftops and forward positions to adjust airstrikes and successfully thwart the enemy's attempts. The courage and determination he instilled in the Vietnamese forces by his personal example was crucial in the successful completion of their mission. Sergeant First Class Yearta's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on him and the United States Army.

Shakelford and Miss Joanah R. Latimer in Lawful Bonds of Matrimony, agreeable to the Constitution and Laws of this State. Given under my hand and Seal of Office this 17th day of October 1861. Nathan Land, Ordy.
Georgia, Cass County I hereby certify that the Marriage of the persons named in the above License actually took place and was duly solemnized before me, this 17th day of October 1861. A. G. Johnson, M. G.
Recorded this 8th Dec. 1861. Nathan Land Ordy.
Joanah R. Latimer married William G. Shackelford on 17 October 1861 in Bartow County, Georgia. ["Georgia, Marriages, 1808-1967," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWWZ-Q8H : accessed 19 Apr 2013), William G. Shackelford and Joanah R. Latimer, 17 Oct 1861.]
Historical Note: Cass County was created from the Cherokee lands of the Cherokee County territory on December 3, 1832, and named after General Lewis Cass (1782-1866) Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, Minister to France and Secretary of State under President Buchannan. It was renamed Bartow County on December 6, 1861 in honor of Francis S. Bartow.

Joanah "J. R." married William in the first year of the War Between The States. Seemingly, William perished in the conflict because "J. R."
appears to be "Jane R. Shuckleford" in 1870 Oglethorpe County. Her two children, daughter Minnie L. listed as Mary S.; and son Charles W. as Charles R. Two households away is Robert B. Latimer, age 31 and family.

Willie Alicia Raiford Laughinghouse is buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Forrest City, St. Francis County, Arkansas. Find A Grave Memorial# 16436557 presents this obituary:
Mrs.Willie Alicia Laughinghouse died at the Baptist hospital in Memphis at midnight, Wednesday night, Mar.18,1925, of meningitus, contracted following an operation for mastoids a few days ago. The body will arrive in Forrest City on the California Special this afternoon, and funeral services will be held sometime Friday. Mrs. Laughinghouse was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Raiford. On Dec.23,1887, she was united in marriage with Mr. Newman Laughinghouse who preceded her in death 12 years ago. To their union were born three children, two of whom, Mrs. Fred Seaton of this city, and Lieutenant Newman Laughinghouse, survive. Lt. Laughinghouse is stationed in Manilla, the Phillipines Islands, in the aviation division of the U.S.Army. Deceased is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ike Mallory, and a half brother, Matthew Raiford of Memphis. A particularly sad feature of the case is that her sister, Mrs. Mallory, is also in the Baptist hospital for a similar operation, and will be unable to attend the funeral. Mrs. Laughinghouse was a devoted member of the Methodist church, and was loved and admired by a large host of friends in the City and County, who mourn with the bereaved family in their loss. General Notes: Husband - Colonel Hamilton LAWRENCE, USMC, WWII

After returning to his Coronado home from duty at Guadalcanal, where he supervised night fighter operations early in 1943, Marine Major Hamilton Lawrence, 29, of 357 D ave., is anxious to return to Pacific action in command of a fighter squadron in time to help drive the Japs out of the Philippine islands, his birthplace. The major yesterday recalled exciting moments from his first taste of battle. He made 10 flights over Rabaul for observation purposes in the heat of the conflict there. Speaking of land from a naval vessel at Green island, he said, "it was a bug's eye view for an aviator to stand on the deck and watch those Jap dive bombers come down. Also to watch their bombs come down - and miss!" Major Lawrence entered marine aviation in 1937 and was comissioned in September 1938. He was promoted to his present rank in March 1943, after serving at Guadalcanal and bougainville. His wife, the former Irene Bibbs Spears, and their 21 month old daughter, Irene, reside with him in Coronado. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Lawrence, of San Francisco. [The San Diego Union, San Diego, California, Sunday, June 18, 1944, Page 39]

"Hamilton Lawrence, '36, of Coronado, Calif., January 8, at 85, of cancer. At 15 he sailed as a cabin boy on a Swedish ship; at 17 he made his first solo airplane flight. He earned his degree in social science and social thought and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. He served in the Marines as a naval aviator from 1937 to 1965, rising to the rank of colonel. He left the military to work as chief pilot for Executive Jet Aviation in Geneva. He retired from flying in 1975. His wife of 51 years, Irene, predeceased him. Survivors: his daughter, Irene, '64; two sons, James and Erik; five grandchildren; and his sister, Kate Rice." Middleburg - Miss Irene Spears and Lieutenant Hamilton Lawrence, United States Marine Corps, were married Saturday at Glen Welby, the home of his cousin, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baird, near Marshall. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Arnold Spears of San Francisco, came to Virginia with her mother a week ago, to be married to Lieutenant Lawrence, an aviator with the First Air Craft Fighting Squadron, stationed at Quantico. Lieutenant Lawrence is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hamilton Lawrence of San Francisco and his mother was formerly Miss Fanno [sic] Cary of Baltimore, who has spent much time in this part of Virginia with her sister, Mrs. Fairfax Harrison, at Belvoir. The Rev. Howard Harper of The Plains performed the ceremony, which was attended by only the immediate families... Lieutenant Lawrence and his best man, Lieutenant Menard Doswell of New Orleans, wore their white uniforms... They went directly to New Bern, N. C., where Lieutenant Lawrence is on maneuvers. Their wedding trip will have to be deferred for a while. Upon their return from the South they will live at Quantico... Guests from a distance included Wilson Miles Cary, uncle of the groom, of Baltimore; Dr. and Mrs. Gerhart Dieke (she was formerly Miss Sally Harrison of Belvoir); Mrs. J. A. Ulman, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. W. From the New York Daily Tribune, Dec. 10, 1902, p. 72:
Sheffield Phelps
[By Telegraph to the Tribune]
Aiken, S.C., Dec. 9 -- Sheffield Phelps, younger son of the late William Walter Phelps, died here today in his winter home from typhoid fever, after an illness of several weeks. All the members of his family have been here for some time.
Sheffield Phelps, journalist and lawyer, was born in New Haven, Conn., July 24,1864. He was a son of a William Walter Phelps, Minister to Germany, and Ellen Sheffield, and grandson of John Jay Phelps, the organizer of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, and Joseph E. Sheffield, founder of the Sheffield Scientific School, of Yale.
He was educated at Siglar's Preparatory School, Newburgh, N. Y., and the Hopkins Grammar School, at New Haven, afterward entering Yale, where he was graduated in 1886.
After leaving college Mr. Phelps went to Colorado, where, after roughing it in mining camps and on cattle ranches, he became Editor of the "The Colorado Springs Gazette." He afterward studied law, and was admitted to the bar.
In 1890 he came to this city and obtained position on the "The New York World." In 1892 he went to "The Mail and Express" as telegraph editor, rapidly advancing into the managing editorship. Leaving "The Mail and Express," he bought an interest in "The Jersey City Evening Journal, which he edited until 1899, when he sold the paper and went to Europe for long vacation. While he was in New Jersey he became a colonel in the National Guard of that State. In 1900 he returned from Europe and entered political life in his native State.
He was a companionable man, and his loss will be felt by a wide circle of friends. A keen sportsman, he was equally at his ease on horseback or driving a four-in-hand. Whether at his permanent home, in Teaneck, N.J., or in Aiken, where he resided in winter, and where he died, he delighted in exercising a generous hospitality. Indeed, not only at home, but on his travels, in the large houseboat which he had recently purchased and put into condition, and on the automobile excursions for which he had a special predilection, he was happy in having his friends with him and giving them pleasure. Though he had abandoned journalism for some time before his death, he never lost his interest in literary pursuits. He was fond of good books and a good plays. Into whatever he did he threw all his energies, notably, as Republicans in his State appreciatively remember, whenever there was a call for his services of the field of politics. He inherited from his distinguished father a marked taste for affairs, and his untimely death closes a career that was full of promise.
Mr. Phelps was a member of the University, Yale, Lawyers' and Ardsley clubs. On June 1, 1892, he married Claudia Wright, the daughter of Preston Lea, banker, of Wilmington, Del. He had three children -- William Walter, Claudia Lea and Eleanor Sheffield.
