The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 5, Virginia Historical Society, William Glover Stanard, pages as noted:
"THE COCKES OF SURRY AND PRINCESS ANNE"
"About the year 1685 (some ten or fifteen years before Secretary William COCKE came over from Suflolk to James City county), three brothers. William COCKE, Walter COCKE (soon after the Norman Conquest we meet with a Walter COCKE in County Kent) and Captain Thomas COCKE, and their cousin, Captain Christopher COCKE, landed in Lower Norfolk* (and probably, like Richard COCKE,1 at Lynnhaven Bay). In a few years we find William and Walter settled in Surry county (where Captain William POWELL [ 162o] and John BRASHEAR lived), and Thomas and Christopher near what is now Portsmouth, in Lower Norfolk. In the early records of Lower Norfolk we find many references to Captain Thomas and Captain Christopher, and some to William and Walter COCKE (about 1690-91)." [p.181]
"In 1699 William COCKE patents 500 acres of land for transportation of nine persons\emdash William COCK, Jr., Walter COCK, Nicholas COCK, Richard COCK, Thomas COCK, Christopher COCK, Edward HOPKINS and William THOMAS." [p.181]
"Thomas COCKE died in 1697, quite a young man, as may be assumed. William COCKE. Walter COCKE, Thomas MASON and Christopher COCKE were his executors. He had only two children, both daughters, Mary and Anne. He left four plantations\emdash one to each of his daughters, the other two to be sold by his executors. He gives to the daughters all his " plate, jewelry, a gold chaine, gold rings, five or six broad pieces of gold, &c." "The servants on the plantation" to be kept or sold as executors shall determine. To his cousin, Christopher COCKE, "my black horse, with bridle and saddle, and my Rapier, belt, and one broad piece of gold. & 10,000 pounds of tobacco for his services in collecting my debt, &c." Unto his cousins, John and Mary BELITHO, Edw'd MOSELEY, Sr., his brothers Walter and William, his cousin Christopher COCKE, & Thomas MASON, unto each a mourning ring. All rest of estate, such as negroes, &c., he gives to his daughters." [p.182]
"Captain Christopher COCKE* in the year 1700 was the clerk of Princess Anne county (the second who held that office). He continued to serve the county in this capacity until his death in 1716... He leaves his property to his daughters, which does not appear to have been very large, and he commits his three daughters, Mary, Ann, and August to the care and bringing up of his " Uncle & Aunt BOLITHOE" until the age of sixteen," to be brought up by them in a christian and virtuous manner in such learning and housewifery as are suitable for their sex. quality, and degree;" and his daughter Elizabeth he commits to the care of his uncle, William..."
"These Princess Anne and Surry COCKEs, came, as we have ascertained, to Lower Norfolk and Surry about the years 1685-90 from the county of Cornwall, England, and from the extreme southwestern point of England\emdash from Helstone on Mounts Bay. some 15 miles east of Lind's End."
"At the eastern extremity of Cornwall, on the coast, in the adjoining county of Devon, is Plymouth, and we may remember that it was from Plymouth that Captain William COCKE, called "The Cocke of the Game," in the time of the Spanish Armada, fitted out his own private vessel, and was killed in an engagement with the Spaniards. He had for a coat-of-arms, "Ar a cher engr betw 3 cocks heads sa a canton H. charged with an anchor or." He was of course connected with these Cornwall Cockes. On the other side of England, at Norwich, we find in "The Visitation of London," 1633, a pedigree and coat-of-arms of Peter COCK. "Cocks [3] under Lion Rampant. Non vi sed voce." See Vol. I, 177. The celebrated Captain George COCKE, so often mentioned in Pepys' Diary, who was of Newcastle, Northumberland county, had the same arms.*
These of course are all related. Indeed, at this time the Cockes of England were in Hertford and Suffolk and Norfolk, Essex, Northumberland and Scotland, and in the west in Gloucestershire, near Malvern Hills, their headquarters. From Gloucester they had moved down to Devon, and thence to Cornwall. We hope in a future article to present an account of this connection at this time in England, where the family was widely connected with the nobility and landed gentry of the old country."
"* The arms of the Newcastle COCKEs were three cocks, crest a single cock, motto ttmprr vifrtfans. Dr. Daniel coxe (the promoter of the Huguenot emigration to Virginia) had a very similar coat.of.arms.
One would little suspect that COCKE and Gogg1a are the same name In Campbell's " History of Virginia," page 163. we have the followmg reference to " Master GOOKINS" at Newport News\emdash he. is speaking of the massacre of 1622, when Captain Nathaniel POWELL and family were killed by the Indians at Powell's B'ook\emdash : " Nevertheless," he says, "a planter ' Master GOOKINS.' at Newport News, refused to abandon his plantation, and with thirty.f1ve men resolutely held it. He was the most prominent citizen in Upper Norfolk. The family of Gooken is ancient, and appears to have been found originally at Canterbury, in Kent, England. The name has undergone successive changes\emdash Colkin, Cockm, Cockayn, Cocyn, Cokin. Gockin, Gokin, Gookin, Gookins, Gookintr. and others. The early New England settlers spelled it 'Goggin.'" ....
Daniel GOOKIN removed to Ireland, whence he came to Virginia in 1621, " with fifty men of his own, and thirty passengers, exceedingly well furnished," and planted himself at Newport News. The arms of this family were : Quarterly, first, gules, a chevron ermine between three cocks. Second and third, sable, a cross crosslet, ermine. Fourth, or, a lion rampant. Crest, on a mural crown, gules, a cock, or beaked and legged azure, combed and wattled gu These are precisely the arms of the famous family of the Cock. aynes in England and Ireland."
"William COCKE and his brother Walter, as we have said, came over to Surry in 1690. The first mention we have of William COCKE is in a deed of 1692 from John BRASHEAR, styled in the deed "of Nansemond Co., now of Surry." The deed is signed by Thomas COCKE,5 of Henrico, and Mary BRASHEAR I BRAZIER, BRASSEUR , BRAZURE), his wife. The meeting indicates that the Cockes of Henrico were relatives of the newcomers. There is a power of attorney in the Norfolk Co. Records from William to his brother, Thomas COCKE, dated 1 1 July, 1692, authorizing him to sell the plantation and grist-mill in Surry Co., probably the same he had bought from John BRASHEAR; which sale was never effected, the property being left to Nicholas COCKE by his father, William, in 1720, in which year William COCKE died. His will appoints his wife Mary his executor. To Nicholas* he leaves the property above-referred to, and the bulk of his real estate, and also his book-binding and his smith's tools. He leaves his son Richard1 150 acres of land, and to his son Thomas' 400 acres on the Nottoway river. To his son William* he leaves the property on which he lived, after the death of his wife, and legacies to his daughter, Mary SPRATLEY.*"
"*An old family in Surry. William SPRATLEY was Member of Committee of Safety for James City 1774. In 1824 Peter H. SPRATLEY, Richard COCKE, John PETER, Nicholas FAULCON, and John FAULCON were County Committee of Surry in Presidential Election."
"William COCKE was a justice of Surry county in 1699; James MASON and Nathaniel HARRISON being justices at the same date. The Harrisons came from Surry, and this Nathaniel HARRISON was in 1720 one of the executors of Richard COCKE,* of Henrico. James MASON was a son of Francis MASON, father of Col. Lemuel MASON, of Lower Norfolk.
Among the justices in 1702, we find the names of William BROWNE, James MASON, William COCK, &c.
Our next record is in 1714, when we find William COCK, Walter COCK, Robert RUFH'N, Henry HARRISON, Wm. EDWARDS, Ethelred TAYLOR, (progenitor of the Taylors, of Southampton), John ALLEN, clerk."
"According to the genealogy of Mr. Thomas M. Clemans, of Philadelphia, he left the following children: 1. Nicholas,1 d. 1748. 2. Richard.* 3. William,* d. 1732 (m. Ann FLOOD, dan. of Walter FLOOD. Col. John FLUDD was Speaker of the House of Burgesses from Charles City in 1652). 4. Thomas. 5. Mary, m. SPRATLEY"
"We know nothing of Richard,' William,* Thomas,1 or Mary.2 The line of Nicholas* was perpetuated and is given below." [Not copied here.]
Per this abstract, William named his wife, four sons, a daughter and two grandchildren in his Will. "Wills and Administrations of Surry County, Virginia, 1671-1750" by Eliza Timberlake Davis, 1980, notes excerpted by Mark A. Murphy, 10 May 2002], p.34:
"COCKE, William: Leg. - To son, Nicholas COCKE, all land that I hold on southwest side of Birchen Swamp and that purchased of Richard HIDE, Sr., also land purchased of Mr. John BRASHARE and all bookbinding tools. To son, Richard COCKE, land bought of William HALSO and also from Richard HIDE over the county road, 150 acres reserving one-half acre for my son William COCKE's warehouse and one-half acre to Thoams COCKE to build a warehouse. To son, Thomas COCKE, land on Nottoway River-- 400 acres where Lemon [probably Simon] MURFREY now dwelleth. To son, William COCKE, the plantation where I now live on and the land bought of Richard WIGGINS and John WIGGINS after the decease of my wife, Mary COCKE, and to son, Nicholas COCKE, to be free and have land bought from WIGGINS. To daughter, Mary SPRATLEY, 30 lbs., to son, Thomas, a quarter part of my sloop and cargo discounting his wages for the last voyage and the present voyage. To granddaughter, Frances COCKER, 5 lbs. To granddaughter, Eliza. SPRATLEY, 5 lbs. All other estate to my wife. 29 Apr 1720. Prob.:19 Oct., 1720. Wit: Walter COCKE, John DAWSON, Mary DAWSON. Book 7, p. 282." General Notes: Husband -
Dr. Richard Parker was born before 1635 if he is the son of "Elizabeth PARKER, widow," named in the 1669 record below. Richard apparently married twice, first to Mary, widow of Nicholas Perkins, and second to his widow, Judith, administrix of his estate in 1677.
Probably in August 1656, shortly after the agreement of July 31, was signed, Dr. Richard Parker and the widow Mary Perkins were married. Certainly NICHOLAS PERKINS was only recently dead--his will was not even offered for probate until the September Court--but with the scarcity of women in the early days of the Colony and the economic difficulties which faced a widow with children prompt remarriages were the rule of the times.

Unfortunately a copy of the will has not been found in the existing records.
Another agreement made by Dr. Parker is recorded on p. 87 of the same records. it was made Mar. 17, 1656, and produced in Court and recorded Apr. 5, 1657: "Whereas I Richard PARKER chirurgeon did formally freely consent and agree to the signing sealing delivery & in a... estate belonging to my now wife Mary PARKER now know yee that I sd Rich PARKER for divers good causes and considerations moving me thereto friendly & freely confirm to sd Deeds children by these...I so friendly and freely make over to my sd wife MARY all the crop that her two boyes or servts shall make this ensuering yeare and after so long as they have to serve or any other things or servts which shall be sent from her further at any time or times whatsoever. to have and to hold as her owne property and free the sd two servts wch goods or servants already sent out, to be sent unto my sd wife, unto her for ever without any let or hinderance of me the sd Richd PARKER or any other person & ... It is of the opinion of the Council that the said PARKER and EDMUNDS having made the first entry ought to be preferred, but if any surplus land remain Capt. [Comment: The above is curious. Why would Richard PARKER sell 270 acres for the token price of 5 shillings? "Your oratrix states that John Scott deceased was a native of Scotland, & at this death left three children, David Wilson Scott,
Richard Marshall Scott, the testator, & a daughter named Anna.
That, according to the papers & memorandums left by the said John Scott, he emigrated to this Country about the year 1753,
bringing with him a cargo of dry goods in order to carry on the business of a merchant. The estate which he obtained from his
Father was not large - he sold it as soon as he arrived at the age of twenty one years for no more than purchased a store of
goods. He settled with his store at a place called "Allens Fresh," in Charles County in the State of Maryland. Being a many of
easy temper & perfectly unsuspicious & credulous, he met with many who were ready to take advantage of Such a disposition.
He was greatly imposed upon &, consequently, after conducting his business for six or seven years he failed & became
bankrupt about the year 1759. After this he went to Scotland in order to obtain assistance & aid from his friends, but in this
effort he failed, & he returned to Maryland where he had left his wife with her mother Mrs. Marshall, as destitute as when he
left Maryland for Scotland. During his absence, his wife had, by the aid of her friends, acquired a few negroes & a small portion
of other property with which by renting land & cultivating it they were able to obtain subsistence. At the time he had no children
- at a subsequent period he had three children, David Wilson, born in the year 1764, Richard Marshall, born in 1769, & Anna
born in 1772. The said John Scott & family continued to reside in Maryland on a small rented farm (not owning any Land) for
which he paid at no time more than one thousand & fifty pounds of Tobacco & Cask. that his taxes on his property of all sorts
at no time exceeded four pounds four shillings & six-pence, Maryland currency - as an evidence of this among several old
receipts found among his papers your oratrix here annexed a receipt for taxes in the year 1778, given of Thomas Latimer,
Deputy sheriff of Charles County which receipt is as follows. "Received, 27th of July 1778, of Mr. John Scott Four pounds,
five shillings & four-pence currency, for his assessments, county Levy & old balance" signed Thomas Latimer, Deputy. Your
oratrix also herein copies a receipt from Hoskins Hanson, his Landlord, shewing, not only the amount of rent he had to pay, but
his not being able to be punctual in paying the small amounts he had agreed to pay. Which receipt is as follows: "December
30th 1776. Received of Mr. John Scott 1010 lbs. of Tobacco for rent for the year 1776, he owing me at this time for rent for
the year following 1046 nt. of crop Tobacco" signed Hoskins Hanson. The receipt shews the amount of rent & quantity of
Land cultivated by the said John Scott while he lived in Maryland.
Your oratrix further states that the said John Scott continued to reside in the State of Maryland on rented land until the year
1780, when he with his family removed to the state of Virginia & settled in Fairfax County a few miles from Colchester on lands
rented from Alexander Henderson for a term of years. Your oratrix, in addition to the preceding circumstances shewing the
reduced means of the said John Scott & of need of aid from his friends, annexed a letter from his son Richard M. Scott dated
the 9th of April 1785, & is number six (6). She refers to it because it shews that his son considered him in need of assistance,
& also to shew that among the negroes he had a servant named Sam, who is mentioned in the letter. Your oratrix has found
among the papers of the said John Scott, which were in possession of her testator, two accounts & receipts of the sheriff of
Fairfax County - the one for the year 1789, amounting to £3.19.2. This appears to have been paid by his son David Wilson
Scott - & the other for the year 1790. by this account the tax for the year 1789 was but £1.17, & for parish levies 168 pounds
of Tobacco. the rest of the bill consists of balances due for the year 1788, & also the receipt of John Moore for the year 1790.
These your oratrix hereunto annexes, all being numbered 7. On the 1st of January in the year 1791, the Testator of your oratrix
for the first time in his life became the owner of real estate which is the place called Farmington, then in the Cty. of Loudoun,
but now in the County of Fairfax, to which he removed his Father, Mother & Sister Anna, where they continued to live free of
rent until their respective deaths. That while being there it appears the said John Scott was for the year 1791 or 1792 assessed
with not more than five slaves, as the Assessor's Books for the County will shew - & is also shewn by an account of his taxes
dated 12th of Oct. 1791, by John Moore, Deputy. Sheriff of Fairfax, which is hereunto annexed numbered 8.
Your oratrix further sheweth that the said John Scott departed this life in the year 1792 at Farmington, the property of his son,
her testator. That he left no will & but little personal property & not more than five slaves which appear to have been acquired
in no other way than as before stated - in the year 1759 by means of the efforts of his wife during his visit to Scotland after his
failure & bankruptcy as a merchant. No on administered upon his estate. He left a widow who died in the year 1795 - she left
no property. From the year 1791 till the death of the said John Scott & of his wife they had been maintained & supported in
comfort & care by their son Richard M. Scott. He charged them no rent, nor demanded payment of anything he furnished for
their use which he did. It is here annexed an account against his father of [illegible] cheerfully & liberally {illegible] all persons he
had business at his [illegible]. A copy of the account marked C is annexed.
If the slaves which were acquired in the year 1759 were the same he had in 1791, the time of his death, and which your oratrix
believes were the Same, they could not in the year 1759 be of any material use if younger than twelve years & if of that age in
1759, they were in 1792 not younger than forty five years. It is not presumable that all were females capable of breeding at the
time of his death. That at least one of them was a man appears by the letter of Richard m. Scott to his father, dated in April
1785, herein before referred to. By the Assessors Books in the County of Fairfax in the years 1791 & 1792, he had but five
slaves assessed to him some of whom there is no doubt were males, such being more useful on a farm than females. As
distributees of his personal estate he left three children - two sons, & a daughter, the intestate of the Deft. Wm. H. Foote. The
said John Scott died intestate - no one has administered on his estate - his distributees were his two sons & daughter Anna.
They, of course, had each a right to an undivided third part of the slaves left by John Scott, subject to the dower right of his
wife until her death, which took place in the year 1795. The legal title after John Scott's death was not vested in any person; &
if there was any division of his personal estate between his distributees it must have been a private one not reduced to writing &
recorded - without proof of such actual division Anna Scott's interest in her Father's slaves was an undivided equitable one. If
this be so, your oratrix is advised & she submits the question to the court whether the administrator of Anna Scott can claim
any specific slave or slaves & the descendant of such separate from the other slaves & the descendant of such other slaves &
whether he ought not to have brought his suit in equity & obtained by a decree of the Court of equity & actual & legal division
of the personal property of John Scott.
Your orator further states - if the private division between Anna Scott & her two brothers is such a one as to rest in her the
legal title to one third of the negroes & other personal estate of her Father, John Scott, after the death of her mother, & of,
course a legal title in her administrator, then it follows that a similar kind of division of Anna Scotts one thirds between David
W. Scott & his brother Richard M. Scott, after the death of the said Anna, which took place in the year 1821, will be equally
valid & rest in each of them a legal & absolute title to one moiety of the negroes she may have left."

General Notes: Husband -
TAYLOR, John - John TAYLOR arrived in Richland County from Virginia in 1749 and settled on Back Swamp on the Bluff Road. John's children were:
1. (Captain) John TAYLOR who married Sarah HIRONS. He died during the American Revolution.
2. Mary TAYLOR married (1) William HAY and after his death then married (2) Thomas HEATH
3. Martha TAYLOR married (1) Nathan Center and after his death then married (2) Captain George WADE
4. (Colonel) Thomas TAYLOR: born September 10, 1743, died November 16, 1833. He married Ann WYCHE (born June 4, 1749, died July 27, 1834) on November 16, 1767.
5. James TAYLOR who died in August 1806, married (1) Mary HIRONS (died April 21, 1772) on April 5, 1768. After Mary's death, James married (2) Sarah DANIEL on December 2, 1772.
John TAYLOR came to South Carolina about the same time (1749 to 1750) as James DANIELL, and lived near James DANIELL's house, at or near what is now Columbia, South Carolina.
John Taylor died in the latter part of 1766 leaving a will (recorded in Charleston, SC). In it he mentions his sons Thomas, John, James, and William, and daughters Martha and Elizabeth. It also mentions a wife Mary, (no maiden name given), and by the terms of the will it appears that she was his second wife and not the mother of his children. It also appears from the deed made by John Taylor transferring his lands in Virginia, that in 1754 he had a wife named Lucy. ("Col Thomas Taylor", compiled by B. F. Taylor in the SC Historical Magazine Vol 27 Oct 1926 pp 204-211).
In 1756, John and his wife Lucy TAYLOR sold four parcels of land to a Jacob MORGAN of Chesterfield County, Virginia. These were properties John obtained from Jacob MITCHELL in 1745, two, one 83 acres and one 100 acres from John MITCHELL, and a 450 acre patent from 1736. [Southside Virginia, Pritchett, p. 1910]
John's wife was Lucy in 1756, but his Will of 1766 names his wife as Mary, obviously married twice.

Mary HIRONS adm., July 16, 1785. Property app. by Jno. HOPKINS, Joel McLEMORE, Thos. JEFFERYS." Was Mary his wife?
The 1790 census of Richland County, South Carolina lists a "William HIRONS 1 1 2 - 1" 1459
General Notes: Wife -
Mary's maiden name is not known, let alone proven.
SPECULATION: (Under construction!!)
1. Mary ______, wife of William HIRONS MIGHT BE Mary DANIELL, daughter of James DANIELL of Fairfield Distrrict, South Carolina, and sister of Sarah who married Capt. James TAYLOR of Richland District. William HIRONS died in 1785. Mary DANIELL is known from her father's bible listing her birth in 1765 and a published marriage to Dr. Robert HENDRICK in 1795. Nothing in between. She was 30 when married to Robert. Old for a first marriage in those days, Robert is thought to have been a second husband.

Some of Simon and Grace's children married as follows:

General Notes: Husband -
This husband of Mary, the mother of Gracie A. WOOD who married James OSBORN, is presumed to have died before 1850 because Mary is living in the home of James OSBORN with Gracie and another daughter, Mary WOOD, 20.
General Notes: Wife -
Mary WOOD is named in the 1850 census, aged 70, born then in 1780. In the 1880 census, she is aged 89, born then 1790. If Mary Wood, 20, in 1850, is her daughter, it is more likely that Mary was closer to 60 than 70 in 1850.

This information concerning the estate of John HOWELL raises a question about the relationship of Grace HOWELL to John HOWELL. His mother was Mary ("History of Richland County", p. 300, Green). REESE (REES), Evan - Contributed by Harriet Imrey (himrey@ntelos.net) 9/29/04 - The material online is exactly as Edwin Green wrote it in 1932; however, he had followed the lead of some Rees/Reese traditions that attached the Rev. Joseph Reese to the wrong parents. It's strictly a coincidence that I was working with three people seeking "Rees-connections" exactly when I ran across the relevant documents. Evan Rees and wife Sarah were in the lower Richland region with 3 children from 1746, so it was a fairly natural assumption that the minister of the church founded in that region in 1764 "must" have been their son. However, he wasn't:
Deed Book W-W, p. 672, 13 Feb 1759, L&R. Daniel Rease (Rees), & Mary his wife, to Joseph Rease (Rees); for £25 currency, 150 a. on E side Little River, in Craven Co., bounding on said side of Little River joining part of said tract belonging to Daniel Rease; all other sides on vacant land; according to grant dated 9 Jan 1750 [1750/1]signed by Gov. James Glen. Witnesses: William Newman, Benjamin Gregory. Newman testified before Jacob Goodown, J.P. on 13 Feb 1759. Recorded 11 June 1761 by William Hopton, Register.
Deed Book A-3, p. 223, 28 & 29 Sept 1763, L&R. Bryant (his mark) White, planter, & Susannah (her mark), his wife, to John Marple, miller, both of Craven Co., for £200 currency, 150 a. on S side of Little River, Craven Co., part of 300 a. granted 9 Jan 1752 [sic] by Gov. James Glen to Daniel Rease; bounding N & SE on vacant land; NE on remaining part of said 300 a. Rease conveyed 150 a. TO HIS SON JOSEPH REASE; the said river now being the dividing line; the above 150 a. having been conveyed by Daniel Rease to Susanna Young, widow, now wife of Bryant White; as by plat of grant. Witnesses: Joshua Edward, Esther (her mark) Edward. Proved by Joshua 29 Sept. 1763 before John Pearson, J.P. Recorded 10 Oct. 1763 by William Hopton, Register.
Here's when and where the future Rev. Joseph Rees arrived in SC, settled in (modern) Fairfield Co.: Petition to SC Council, Meeting of Tuesday 7 November 1749:
Read the Petition of Daniel Rees, Blacksmith, setting forth That the Pet'r was come with two Children of his Family from Pensilvania and the rest of his Family being three more Children he had sent for and expected they were already in this Province, and was desirous of settling his said Family on Little River that runs into Broad River, prayed to run out to him 300 acres of Land as aforesaid and that he might have a Grant for the same on his producing a Certificate of the other three Children as about being arrived in the Province. Signed Daniel Rees, 9 Oct'r 1749. The prayer thereof was granted.
There are a large number of descendants of Joseph Reese, many of whom are attempting to document his history based on the mistaken assumption about his descent from the Evan Rees who lived on the Congarees, died in Orangeburgh township in 1759. Rees was converted to the Separatist Baptist movement at the Philip Mulkey revival on the Little River, Fairfield Co, moved south to minister to the new congregation of Congaree Baptist Church only after 1764, so there's no question about exactly which Joseph Reese he is. (http://www.palmettoroots.org/RichlandFamilies.html)
The following, now shown to be in error, was published in A History of Richland County South Carolina by Edwin L. Green: "It seems Evan REESE migrated from Wales to Pennsylvania and then to South Carolina about 1745. He was married to Sarah. Said to be the father of Rev. Joseph REESE." (http://www.palmettoroots.org/RichlandFamilies.html)
