General Notes: Husband - John MOSS

"Precisely when and how John Moss assembled the acreage that comprised Green Spring Farm is not certain. Fairfax County land records show a purchase of land by John Moss in September 1777, but, although this is the first connection of his name with the land of Green Spring Farm in these records, there is reason to believe that he may have occupied and farmed the land prior to that date. For him to have done so would have been consistent with the practice of his times and also would be in accord with the tradition of his present-day descendants which holds that John Moss built the mansion house at Green Spring Farm in or about 1760.
John Moss lived in this house until his death in 1809. Here he raised four sons\emdash John, Samuel, William, and Thomas\emdash the last two of whom successively inherited and worked the farm from 1809 until 1839. On the death of Thomas Moss in 1839, the farm was sold and the proceeds of the sale were divided among his heirs."

"WILL OF JOHN MOSS, 1809
Fairfax County Superior Court Willbook No. 1, pp. 1-3.
"In the name of God Amen I John Moss of the County of Fairfax and State of Virginia do hereby make and Ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit I give to my son John Moss the plantation whereon he now lives which was leased by me of the late Revd Bryan Fairfax and the service of my Negro man Nat until the period arrives when he is to go out free agreeable to a Deed of Manumition Recorded in Fairfax County Court upon his paying his sister Frances Middleton Fifty Dollars which with what I have heretofore given him I consider as his full part of my estate. Item having already given my daughter Frances Middleton a lease I held under the said Bryan Fairfax Deceased known as Buck Spring and a negro woman by the name of Maria as long as she has to serve under the before mentioned Deed of Manumition I now give and bequeath unto her as her full part of my estate the sum of Fifty Dollars to be paid her by her brother John Moss in twelve months after my Decease provided the said negro man Nat given him shall survive me and come to the actual possession of my son John Moss. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Moss and his heirs forever the plantation whereon he now lives so as to include one third part of the lands I purchased of Daniel Summers and Baldwin Dade agreeable to the deed I have made him also two acres on the south side of the Turnpike to be laid off along the line of West and to join the land I have before given him. In order to afford an outlet to the Turnpike Road, and as the word (also) may be understood to imply my Intention is to give him those two acres more than his third part before-mentioned I declare it is not but that they are to be included in the same. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Gideon Moss and my grand Daughter Elizabeth K. Moss two hundred Dollars each to be paid them or their heirs in eighteen months after my Decease which with what I gave their father in his lifetime I consider and hereby declare to be their full part of my Estate. Item I give to wife Ann Moss during her natural life the use of all the rest and residue of my Estate real, personal and mixed for the support of her and such of my daughters as may be at the time of my Death unmarried and after her decease I give and bequeath unto my Sons William Moss and Thomas Moss and their heirs forever the residue of the lands purchased by me of the aforementioned Summers and Dade to be divided between them as follows: Beginning on the Turnpike road adjoining the two acres given my son Robert Moss for an Outlet thence down the said road opposite to my gate thence a southerly course to a small Drain about fifteen poles from the Turnpike road by the name of Crumps Branch thence down the said Branch and bending therewith to the intersection of the Dividing line of the lands purchased by me of the before-mentioned Summers and Dade thence with the said line eastwardly to where it crosses the Turkey Branch thence up the said branch with the Several Courses of my deed from the said Summers to the Intersection of West's line thence with the line to the beginning which several courses include that part of my land I wish my son Thomas to enjoy all but the houses where John Powell now lives with four acres adjoining it I add to the lands I intended for my daughters Patsy, Mary and Anne and in case it should exceed one third part of my purchase from the said Summers and Dade then I direct that my son Thomas Moss do pay to his brother William Moss at the rate of Twenty five Dollars for every acre that may be included in his said lott over and above one third part of the said two purchases of Summers and Dade. Item I give and bequeath to my three daughters Patty Moss, Mary Moss and Anne Moss and their heirs forever after my wife's Decease the whole of the lands I purchased of William H. Terrett to be equally divided including the homes and four acres adjoining (as mentioned before) between them and two thirds parts of the whole of my personal estate be divided between them and their heirs forever. Item the rest and residue or the One third part of my personal 67 estate after my wife's decease I give and bequeath unto my three sons Robert Moss, William Moss and Thomas Moss to be equally Divided between them and their heirs & lastly I appoint my wife Ann Moss executrix and my sons Robert Moss, William Moss and Thomas Moss executors of my last will and testament hereby revoking all other and former wills by me heretofore made In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this fourteenth day of November Anno 1808 Present
John Moss SEAL "

General Notes: Husband - Uriah P. MITCHELL

Uriah P. MITCHELL is not listed with Randolph and Martha MITCHELL's family in the 1850 census of Barbour County, Alabama when he should have been about age 8. In 1860, at age 18, he lives in the household of Randolph's widow, Martha MITCHELL. It is doubtful he is Randolph and Martha's son, more likely, he is an orphaned son of Randolph MITCHELL's brother Uriah.

"I believe him [Uriah P. MITCHELL] to be the grandson of James & Eliz M., son of Uriah G. Mitchell and Ann Pope, who was born in 1842 (no source). I can't find Uriah who m. Pope on the 1850 census or later, think the're dead and Randolph has the orphan in 1860." [from: Tuck Wilson]

IMPORTANT! The LDS website information and the actual 1880 census page have major dicrepancies between them.
The 1880 census Family History Library Film 1255229 NA Film Number T9-1229 Page Number 235C shows the following: William RUFF Self M Male W 31 Cattle Trader SC SC SC; Annie RUFF Wife M Female W 43 Keeping House SC MASS SC; ______ Dau Female 22 SC SC SC; ______ SonL Male 19 SC At Home MASS SC. (NOTE: The unnamed daughter and son-in-law here are likely step children by William's wife who is 12 years older than he is, William too young to be their father.)
The actual 1880 census page from Heritage Quest,1880 U.S. Census, South Carolina, Fairfield County, Twp 11, as of 1 Jun 1880; Series: T9 Roll: 1229 Page: 235, shows: 28 29 RUFF William WM 31 Cattle Trader SC SC SC;
(NOTE: Lines below William are covered by what may be an ink spill on the page. It is possible to make out Annie and the last digit of her age, a 3. The LDS site says she is 43. Close inspection of the partially visible top of the first digit resembles every 3 on the page. I believe her age is 33, making Annie about two years older than William, vice 12 years older at LDS. The next two names cannot be read. The first of these is age "2", a daughter, but there may, or may not, be a blotted over number in front of it. The second illegible name is age 19 and a Sister-in-law, not a "SonL Male" as at LDS. Both of these are marked as males, but otherwise indicated as females. There is plenty of room for speculation here. SPECULATION: What is below makes more sense to me, and was proven by the 1900 census. RLD)

General Notes: Husband - TSgt William Howard DANIELL, USAAF, WWII

William Howard Daniell was a son of James Levi Daniell and Bessie Blackstock and a grandson of John Levi Daniell and Antoinette Holsey.

William's father died 15 July 1925 in Stewart County, Georgia. His mother, Bessie B., and three of her children are named in the 1930 census of Mineral Spring, Stewart County, one of whom is William H., age 8, born in Alabama.

William Howard Daniell graduated from Columbus High School. [The Columbus Daily Enquirer, Columbus, Georgia, Friday, June 3, 1938, Page 1]

Howard Daniell of Columbus is named as a brother in the 14 June 1941 wedding announcement of Miss Mary Frances Daniell and Gordon H. Colwell, Jr.

On 6 May 1942 at Fort Benning, Georgia, William H. Daniell, born 1921 in Georgia, enlisted as a Private in the Air Corps. He had 4 years of high school, worked in construction and was single, without dependents. His serial number was 14067849. ["United States World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/9MJH-W34Y : accessed 15 Jun 2014), William H Daniell, enlisted 06 May 1942, Ft Benning, Georgia, United States; citing "Electronic Army Serial Number Merged File, ca. 1938-1946," database, The National Archives: Access to Archival Databases (AAD) (http://aad.archives.gov : National Archives and Records Administration, 2002).]

Pfc. William H. Daniell who was an automobile parts cleck before entering service, is continuing this work in the mechanical field, for he has been assigned to the Army Air Forces Technical Training Command at Sioux Falls, S. D., to be trained as a radio operator-mechanic. Daniell, son of James L. Daniell, 2406 Marion street, was inducted last September at the Army Air Forces Cadet Center at Nashville, Tenn. Columbus Pilot Flies His Golden Mission
15th AAF IN ITALY
Technical Sergeant William H. Daniell, 23, of 2406 Marion St., Columbus, Ga., has successfully completed hie fiftieth combat mission. Radio operator on a 15th Air Force Flying Fortress, he flew his "golden" mission November 19, when the Forts bombed the oil storage dumps of Vienna, Austria.
A graduate of Columbus High school, Sergeant Daniell was formerly employed by the post engineers at Fort Benning, Ga. He enlisted in the Army September 22, 1942 and attended the radio school at Sioux Falls, S. D., and the aerial gunnery school at Yuma, Ariz., where he received his wings.
Upon leaving the United States for combat duty overseas, he was assigned to the oldest heavy bombardment group in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. this group, bombing enemy installations in almost every Axis-dominated country in Europe from bases in England, North Africa, Russia and Italy, has flown over 350 combat missions. Sgt. Daniels [sic] first mission was thwe attack on the Ploesti oil refineries in Romania, on July 9.
Questioned as to his "roughest" mission Sergeant Daniel [sic] said "Over the Florsdorf oil refinery in Vienna, Austria, on October 13, the flak was intense. A few seconds after "Bombs away" I heard a crashing sound. A piece of 'flak' about two inches long had come up through the camera hatch, hit the nozzle on the fire extinguisher, glanced upward to tear a hole right through the radio and finally came to rest down by my right foot."
Sergeant Daniell has been awarded the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and has earned the European-African-Middle East Theater Ribbon with two battle participation stars. He also wears the ribbon of the Presidential Citation, which has been awarded to his unit.
[The Columbus Daily Enquirer, Columbus, Georgia, Thursday, December 21, 1944, Page 2]

General Notes: Husband - Elijah Leroy DANIELL

Elijah L. DANIELL, age 5, son of Robert Tucker DANIELL and Mary J. KINNEY, is named in the 1860 census of Wilkinson County, Georgia. In 1870, Elijah is named as Eliza, 15, a daughter of Robert and Mary, still in Wilkinson County, Georgia.

Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1879. Their daughter, Lizzie, was born in May 1880. There is a marriage record for a "DANIEL ELIJAH [to] STINSON JENNIE 5 May 1872 " in Troup County, Georgia.

1880 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Hawkinsville; Series: T9 Roll: 162 Page 301: Elijah DANIEL Self M Male W 26 GA Farm Laborer GA GA; Betty DANIEL Other M Female W 23 GA Keeping House GA GA; Lizzie DANIEL Dau S Female W 1M GA GA GA. (Family History Library Film 1254162 NA Film Number T9-0162 Page Number 301B) From this census, it is apparent that Elijah first married Betty, maiden name unknown, before 1880. Betty apparently died soon after Lizzie was born. This census indicated she was disabled, "Child bed" was her described condition.

Elijah married second Sarah "Sallie" Leone ARMSTRONG on 9 January 1884. The death certificate of their daughter Mary lists her mother as Sallie Louisa ARMSTRONG.

Elijha and Sarah's family, minus three children who died young, is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census, Georgia, Pulaski County, Walker; Series: T623 Roll: 217 Page: 124: 393 403 DANIELL Elijah L Head W M Jan 1855 45 M 16 GA GA GA Overseer; -- Sarah L. The second "L" in Elijah's surname appears to be written over an "S", perhaps an insistence on the spelling "DANIELL". Heritage Quest lists Elijah L. DANIELS in the 1900 census index.

Sarah and Elijah DANIELL both died in September 1906, Sarah on the 18th and Elijah before the end of the month. On 1 October 1906, Sarah's brother, Hugh ARMSTRONG, was appointed guardian of their three youngest children.

Elijah and Sarah are buried in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery in Bleckley County, Georgia. His headstone provides only his name, "ELIJHA L. DANIELL SR." A picture of his headstone is on Find A Grave Memorial# 31593488 created by Marsha Allen Durrance on Nov 21, 2008.

The DANIELL family headstones in Bleckley County reveal a most interesting evolution of the surname within a single generation. Two sons are buried near Elijah Leroy DANIELL, Sr., in the Evergreen Baptist Church Cemetery, Elijah, Jr. as DANIELL and William Anderson as DANIELS, and a third son, Jesse D. as DANIEL, buried in the Antioch United Methodist Cemetery.

General Notes: Wife - Betty --?--

Betty was the first wife of Elijah Leroy DANIELL. In the 1880 census of Pulaski County, Georgia, Betty DANIEL, is listed as disabled, the word "Child bed" entered in column 15. Betty and Elijah DANIEL's daughter, Lizzie, 16/30, was born about 14 May. The enumerator visited the home on 10 June 1880, the date Betty was found in "Child bed". Her delivery, almost a month before must not have gone well. (Note: The census page entry for Lizzie's age is over written; it may 16/30 or 18/30)
Betty may have died from lingering complications of giving birth. Before 1884, Elijah married Sarah Leone ARMSTRONG. By the 1900 census, the next available, Lizzie was not in her father's home. It is not known if she, by then 20, had married, or if she too had died.
